Selling Dead People's Things is a wry behind-the-curtain peek into the world of antiques and their obsessive owners—while still alive and after their passing. An amusing observer of the human condition, author Duane Scott Cerny entertains in illuminating, scary, sad, or frightfully funny resale tales and essays. Whether processing the estate of a hoarding beekeeper, disassembling the retro remains of an infamous haunted hospital, or conducting an impromptu appraisal during a shiva gone disturbingly wrong, every day is a twisted treasure hunt for this 21st-century antiques dealer. While digging deep into the basements, attics, and souls of the most interesting collectors imaginable, traveling from one odd house call to the curious next, resale predicaments will confound your every turn. Be careful where you step, watch what you touch, and gird your heart—Antiques Roadshow, this ain't! The Dybbuk box, or Dibbuk box (Hebrew: קופסת דיבוק, romanized: Kufsat Dibbuk), is a wine-cabinet claimed to be haunted by a dybbuk, a concept from Jewish mythology. The box gained notoriety when it was auctioned off on eBayby owner Kevin Mannis, who created a story featuring Jewish Holocaust survivors and paranormal claims as part of his eBay item description. Mannis' story was the inspiration for the 2012 horror film The Possession. In 2021, Mannis told Input magazine that the Dybbuk Box story was entirely fictional.Follow Our Other ShowsFollow UFO WitnessesFollow Crime Watch WeeklyFollow Paranormal FearsFollow Seven: Disturbing Chronicle StoriesJoin our Patreon for ad-free listening and more bonus content.Follow us on Instagram @mysteriousradioFollow us on TikTok mysteriousradioTikTok Follow us on Twitter @mysteriousradio Follow us on Pinterest pinterest.com/mysteriousradio Like us on Facebook Facebook.com/mysteriousradio]

In the first part of the 2000s, there were paranormal TV shows and movies made about the Dybbuk (or Dibbuk), an evil spirit from Judaic folklore that can possess a person. The idea of the "Dybbuk Box" that cursed its owners gained urban folktale status. However, these evil spirits are not demons, they are the restless male dead, and were not really a concept until the rise of medieval Kabbalistic Judaism, and in particular from sixteenth century stories from the city of Safed. We look at what dybbuks are, the afterlife theology surrounding them, and different scholarly ideas about dybbuk possession, especially in women. Are these evil spirits preying on the sinful, another misunderstanding of mental illness, or in the case of women, an authentic voice that has been repressed and attributed to a negative male force?

In 2001 Kevin Mannis, an antiques dealer in Portland, Oregon bought an ornate wine box at a yard sale. Days later, it caused extreme damage to his business, gave his mother a stroke and completely ravaged his life. This is the story of the Dybbuk box, one of the most haunted objects in the world.
The bulk of this episode focuses on Making a Muscle Boy, in which we stage our first ever "Fatal 4-Way," which is not as sexy as it sounds, albeit still quite sexy. We also have a heck of a time talkin' Bigfoots and that weird Christian rap song from which Katy Perry allegedly stole. Thanks for tuning in!
The story of the Dybbuk Box is an especially captivating one, and is a great example of how quickly legends and folklore are born. It’s one of my favorite bits of modern folklore, not only for the story telling behind it, but also for all the strange twists and turns the story takes the more you delve into it.

In 19th century Ukraine, Jewish boys were being spirited from their families to serve the czar, Hasidism was sweeping Jewish practice from Kyiv and Chernobyl through central Europe, and a Jewish girl became a controversial but charismatic Jewish leader.Hannah Rochel, born Hannah Rachel Verbermacher, was the only independent female Rebbe in the 300-year history of the Hasidic movement.Known as “the Maiden of Ludmir”, she has jokingly been called the second-most famous virgin in Jewish history. But to the people of her time, and even long after her death, Hannah Rochel was no joking matter. She severely challenged the social and religious order of her time. Her leadership was based not on dynastic authority, but on the original Hasidic tradition of charisma. Furthermore, she did not ask for money or promote herself.Little is actually known of Hannah Rochel. Only four of her teachings are recorded, and she wrote nothing of herself. The first scholarly study of her life was published in 1909, some 30 years after she died. Even that was based on hagiography, folk tales & legends.Considerable poetic license has been taken to fictionalize her life. She is the subject of four novels, two plays, and is an important character in Isaac B. Singer’s novel “Shosha” and Ansky’s play the Dibbuk. In 2003 a definitive scholarly biography of her life was finally published, written by Nathaniel Deutsche, Professor of Literature and History at the University of California, Santa Cruz.Hannah Rachel Verbermacher was born in about 1806, in the shtetl of Volodymir, Volhynia. Also called Ludmir, it is one of the oldest settlements in Ukraine. Located in an area of shifting borders, at the time it was part of the Russian empire.Ludmir is also one of the earliest Jewish settlements in Ukraine. Jews first appeared and settled in Ludmir in 1171. By 1786 the town was an important Hasidic center.Hannah Rochel was the only child of wealthy merchants who were pious Hassidic Jews. Unlike other children, she preferred studying to playing, and begged to learn Torah. To her father’s dismay she became an outstanding student and child prodigy. It is believed she received her religious calling at age 12, when she had a fainting spell and visitation while at her mother’s grave. She and went on to gain fame as a scholar and holy woman able to perform miracles. When she was 19, her father died and she inherited his fortune. She built herself a house of study, which soon became a house of worship and a place of teaching where she gave lessons and blessings. Her followers were mainly women and craftsmen … common Jews.Hannah Rochel had no aspirations to become a female rabbi, and never tried to encroach or challenge male leaders. She just loved the Torah and her faith. She dispensed her wisdom while remaining in seclusion, as was common practice among ascetic tzadikim at the time. She dressed modestly, as was considered proper for Jewish women. But she was doing things not done by other women at that time, and which are still not done by Hasidic women. Also, unlike other holy Hassidic women, she was not attached to a man.So it was only a matter of time before her activity generated a furor. That a woman had taken on a male role was distasteful to male leaders who considered her body merely a vessel for a male soul.In addition, there was professional envy. One story tells of a male rebbe, supported by wealthy residents in Lublin, upset that many poor people left him to follow Hannah Rochel. In her late 20s Hannah succumbed to the relentless pressure to marry. The next day, for reasons unknown, she dissolved the marriage, and for the next three decades disappeared from the public eye. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

A popular tale tells of a haunted Jewish wine box that brought ill fortune upon its owners... apparently.
Hey Everyone and welcome to the latest SEPS Paranormal Podcast. On this eipisode I interview Jason Haxton the care-taker of the Dibbuk Box (this box is what the movie The Possession is based on). Jason discusses how he came to be the care-taker of the box, what sorts of paranormal events he has witnessed from it, and why he believes it was created. This was an amazing interview with a LOT of insight and knowledge into the phenomenon. Check it out. You can find out more about the Dibbuk Box and Jason Haxton at www.dibbukbox.com. Paranormal Witness also did an episode on the box based on Jason's book. This is a truly amazing topic. Paul www.sepsparanormal.org
