Have you listened to the FULL EPISODE yet?"Two siblings can grow up in the same home, but have a very different childhood. I was a very, very sensitive child. I picked up on everything." - Jillian TureckiGrowing up as the daughter of a prominent psychiatrist who wrote "The Difficult Child" based on her own childhood, Jillian Turecki's journey through family trauma has shaped her understanding of relationships in profound ways. Despite navigating a complex relationship with her father, who struggled with severe bipolar disorder and narcissistic personality disorder, she emerged with deep insights into how our earliest relationships shape our adult connections. As a relationship coach, she brings a nuanced perspective to the intricate ways childhood experiences influence our choice of romantic partners, often leading us to unconsciously seek out relationships that mirror our earliest emotional wounds. Her personal story of growing up in an emotionally volatile household, where hypervigilance became a survival skill, offers powerful lessons about healing and transformation. Turecki shares her professional expertise on why many people unknowingly marry someone similar to the parent with whom they struggled most, exploring the unconscious patterns that drive our relationship choices. Her approach acknowledges that while forgiveness isn't always necessary or appropriate, especially in cases of abuse, finding peace with our past is crucial for building healthy relationships.Sign up for the Greatness newsletter!
Today we're diving into a topic that's very close to my heart. Along with being a parent of a child often labeled as "difficult," I know that so many other children are unfairly pigeonholed because of their behavior. And I've come to realize: it's not so much about the actual behavior as it is about understanding the root cause of that behavior. To have this conversation with me today on Yoga | Birth | Babies is Nina Essell. Nina is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with over a decade of experience as a school social worker supporting children and families. Nina holds a Master's of Social Work from Columbia University and a Master's of Science in Childhood General and Special Education from Bank Street College of Education. Nina is an advanced certified trainer in the Nurtured Heart Approach as well as Kimochis, a social emotional learning curriculum. Currently, she is a parenting coach and consultant, providing 1-on-1 coaching, parenting workshops, and professional training. In this episode, we explore how families can reframe challenging behaviors, the importance of parents finding their own grounding during moments of dysregulation, and practical tools children can use to identify big feelings- before they boil over. My hope is that we, as a society, can get to a place of understanding these kids without judgement. Enjoy this episode. It is narrated by a young girl born into a family fighting against the system for their Christian beliefs, while being systematically relieved of their wealth and livelihood due to the oppressive incoming regime. Creating a Family: Talk about Infertility, Adoption & Foster Care
Do you have a child that is more—louder, more energetic, more argumentative, more everything? Intense children can be harder to raise, but their intensity is a gift as well as a parenting challenge. We talk with Howard Glasser, creator of the Nurtured Heart Approach to parenting. He is the author of Transforming the Difficult Child and Transforming the Intense Child Workbook. In this episode, we cover:What do you consider to be an intense child? My child was “more”—more loud, more energy—their reaction to most things was simply more. They go from 5 mph to 60mph in about a second. How to raise the intense child. What are the labels and diagnoses that intense children often accumulate? ADHD, ODD (Oppositional Defiance Disorder), conduct disorder, PTSD, anxiety disorder, depression. What makes some kids more “intense” than others? What do you mean by energy-challenged kids? Unable to handle or effectively control their physical, cognitive or emotional energy. They have a disorder of self-control. They have more energy than they have self-control.Energy is a gift as well as a challenge. You mention in Transforming the Difficult Child that many intense or difficult kids love video games—more so than the average child. Why? Structure-while I think all children need structure, the high-intensity child really needs structure. Positive forms of structure vs. negative forms of structureTraditional parenting techniques did not work well for my intense little wonder. Your approach to raising an intense child is based on your Nurturing Heart Approach as outlined in your book, Transforming the Difficult Child and Transforming the Intense Child Workbook. What are the basic principles of this approach to parenting? The 3 strands.Strand 1: Refuse to energize the negative. What are some of the challenges parents face when applying this? What are some common ways we might accidentally energize the negative?Strand 2: Energize the positive. active recognition, experiential recognition, proactive recognition, creative recognition. Is there a problem with too much praise?Strand 3: Absolute clarity on limits and consequences. How to set limits?Intensity is not something that a person outgrows. This podcast is produced by www.CreatingaFamily.org. "And then I tell myself - he didn't ask to be here." An obedient son is an oxymoron. Each one of us has rebelled in our own ways in our youth, and have generally not been worse for it (though who's to say?!). But each story has its variations. And parents have their own tales to tell. And as one myself, I have my tales - and travails! A life is a gift in so many ways. And much more when you see the gifts which come unasked for. And the giving to one's child has a tender inevitability to it, which makes it both a duty as also an unburdening - it's a relief to be able to pass on what one has garnered in one's life, for the simple alternative is to take it with oneself to one's grave. But the corollary which haunts is - why is this passage of rites so fraught? But then I realise that I generalise, and there are so many imperceptible ways children learn - direct, osmosis, eavesdropping, whilst rebelling, whilst being rejected, when pushed away, when held close irrespective. Our relationship to our children is a lifelong work-in-progress, till the time (and even whilst) they start to tell us what to do. Because there are no templates for care. And then we understand the irony that we learn more as we seek to teach. And in that one realisation lies the light which then shines equally on both of us. So, what constitutes a difficult child? I think we need to start with that and that's even a hard thing to say, because nobody wants to call their kid difficult. Right? I get it. We have a kid that's struggling. Our household feels anything but peaceful. We have a dream that we want our kids to be at peace. We want a calm environment. We want that household that maybe we didn't have but desired when we were growing up. We have all these hopes and dreams. And now you have a child who is “difficult” and you need to figure some things out. So, during today's episode, I break down what I believe constitutes a difficult child. And then I give you some helpful tips, some strategies to help you find a way to find more peace in your household and manage some challenging behaviors your kiddo may be exhibiting. Like I often do, I unpack a real-life situation, one that may be familiar to you and your family. I stumbled upon this Mastermind Parenting method because I was also experiencing the challenges of a difficult child. It was because I couldn't find the exact right resource. I couldn't find the exact right program. I liked this part from one program, but I liked another part from another program, but I actually sort of liked this part from some “old school” methods that didn't seem aligned with the newer styles. And I realized, I was not someone who likes to follow exact recipes, so I threw together what worked for me and my family, and that's what I'm sharing with you now. So, if you're struggling with that difficult child, listen to this episode, and I'll give you my top three tips for finding a way to a better place. Listen to this episode for more of my thoughts and strategies on how you can move toward being a Mastermind Parent! And as always, thanks for listening, and be sure and head over to Facebook and you can join my free group Mastermind Parenting Community where we post tips and tools and do pop up Live conversations where I do extra teaching and coaching to support you in helping your strong-willed children so that they can FEEL better and DO better. Creating a Family: Talk about Infertility, Adoption & Foster Care
Do you have a child that is more—more loud, more energetic, more argumentative, more everything? Intense children can be harder to raise, but their intensity is a gift as well as a parenting challenge. We talk with Howard Glasser, creator of the Nurtured Heart Approach to parenting. He is the author of Transforming the Difficult Child and Transforming the Intense Child Workbook. In this episode, we cover:What do you consider to be an intense child? My child was “more”—more loud, more energy—their reaction to most things was simply more. They go from 5 mph to 60mph in about a second. I've noticed this too. Why? Structure-while I think all children need structure, the high intensity child really needs structure. This episode of “Mad in the Family” focuses on a non-drug method to bringing out the best in challenging children, particularly those diagnosed with “ADHD.” It is called the Nurtured Heart Approach® and its essence is that, in the words of our guest, “the same intensity that drives people crazy is actually the source of a child’s greatness." He is the approach’s creator, family therapist Howard Glasser. Glasser has been called “one of the most influential living persons working to reduce children’s reliance on psychiatric medications” and is the author of the bestselling book, Transforming the Difficult Child and more than a dozen other books. Glasser is also the Founder of the Children’s Success Foundation, whose mission is to advance the work of the Nurtured Heart Approach by conducting training programs to support parents in building Inner Wealth® in their children, educators in formally implementing the approach in school systems, and therapeutic professionals to meet the unique mental health needs of “intense” children. A frequent keynote speaker at conferences on treatment and education, he currently teaches certification trainings on his method, as well as in Dr. Andrew Weil’s program at the University of Arizona’s School of Integrative Medicine. http://www.howardglasser.com/ https://childrenssuccessfoundation.com/
Humor for Stress (0:00:00) When life gets busy, it can be hard to remember to keep life fun and enjoyable. We start to get bogged down in all the details that we forget to enjoy the journey. And sometimes the best medicine for stress really is a little laughter. Our next guest, Andrew Tarvin, is a firm believer in this idea, which is why he founded Humor That Works, a company based on teaching professionals how to incorporate humor into the workplace to achieve better business results. Raising a Difficult Child (0:21:43) Every parent and child struggle with discipline at least once. Whether that's in the first few years with tantrums or rebellious teenage years—no child is easy. But some children can be especially difficult to deal with. It doesn't mean that we love them any less, but we want to be able to figure out the best way to help them learn and grow. For one couple, this proved to be incredibly hard when their adopted daughter was showing intense behavior issues from a young age. Here to tell us more about that experience and how we can better raise and understand our difficult children is author Paul Podolsky. Spot the Bot (0:52:47) We've all had to click those little "I'm not a robot" boxes when using the internet. While it may seem like a ridiculous thing to clarify with your computer that you are in fact human and not a machine, it's actually quite important. Bots are used across all social media platforms, spreading misinformation and political propaganda. And while you might think you can tell real people from robots—online—it's harder than you might think. Here to share with us his advice on how we can spot bots on social media is media forensic expert Darren Linvill. Mini Book Club: Bullying Books (1:12:57) Rachel Wadham, of BYU Radio's Worlds Awaiting, talks with Lisa and Richie about the best books that teach kids about bullying. Halloween Costume Ideas (1:27:22) The beauty of Halloween is that you can dress up as much or as little as you want and have a blast either way. And now more than ever, despite the fact that we won't be going to any big gatherings, we deserve to dress up, celebrate and have fun! But we are now only two days away from Halloween. So, for those of you who have procrastinated, it's time to start thinking of last-minute costumes. To help us out we invited fashion designer, celebrity stylist and Lisa's sister—Amanda Valentine.
THE NURTURED HEART APPROACH is a beautiful episode with Howard Glasser, the Founder of the Children’s Success Foundation and creator of the Nurtured Heart Approach®. He likes to think of himself as a voice for children’s greatness so that ultimately children can find their own voice of greatness. Howard’s training background is in family treatment, clinical studies and educational leadership and his body of work has been inspired from his work with some of the most intense and challenging children. He has been referred to as one of the more influential living persons working to reduce children’s reliance on psychiatric medications and his work has been featured on CNN, in Esquire Magazine, as well as in now inspiring a growing number of programs worldwide. Howard is the author of 15 books, including Transforming the Difficult Child, Notching Up the Nurtured Heart Approach, and Igniting Greatness and is a sought after Keynote speaker at conferences in areas of treatment and education. The Nurtured Heart Approach has been successfully adopted by the state of New Jersey’s Coordinated System of Care and is being examined as a model of care by other states as well as being currently researched by both by Rutgers University and the University of Arizona’s Zuckerman School of Public Health with findings soon to be published. He currently teaches certification trainings on his method, teaches at Andrew Weil’s renowned program at the University of Arizona’s School of Integrative Medicine as well as in the new Transformational Wellness program at U of A’s School of Public Health. Howard and I had a moving conversation around ADHD children and our society's need to honor children for who they are and not try to mold them into who we think they should be! When we think my child is difficult or something is wrong with them, we feel judgement, criticism and negativity. And those feelings make us act and say negative things to our child. It doesn't help that the medical world likes to throw labels like 'disorder' on our children. Heidi will teach you the warning thoughts that you are seeing your child through this distorted lens. She then shares critical questions to help clean off the lens. When we honor our children are unique and will bloom in their own season - and that they are ENOUGH, COMPLETE and PERFECT, we see them different. We are calm and peaceful.

When Jesse and I got married, I tried so hard to fix him. I saw all of his shortcomings, and I wanted to help him be better. Surprise surprise, this caused a lot of tension. It took a while for me to realize that my job was to focus on myself (and there’s plenty of work to do there) rather than try to change or “fix” other people. This idea goes for our kids, too! In today's episode of The Crystal Paine Show, I'm talking with Jami Amerine about how easy it is to try to fix our kids and how ineffective and stressful this is as a parent. Just recently, one of my kids was really frustrated over their grades. While I was trying to ask them questions to figure out the source of their frustration, they blurted out, “But I NEED to get all A’s!” I stopped and quietly looked them in the eye and said, “Who put that on you?” As in, where did the feeling that you need to get all A’s originate from? Is that something someone else is making you feel like you have to achieve? When I talked more with this child, they admitted that it wasn’t us or their siblings or a friend or a teacher; it was their own self. They felt like they weren’t measuring up to a standard they had set for themselves if they didn’t get all A’s. Mamas, I think most of us have done the same. We’ve created a standard of perfection we feel we must achieve to be a great parent or have a great kid. And if we’re not hitting that self-made standard, we are failing. But, who put that on you?? While we might sometimes feel like there is pressure from outside sources, in most cases, it’s something we’ve put on ourselves. And here’s what I want to gently say to you: “You don’t need to carry that any more.” Lay it down. Let it go. The sooner you stop trying to live up to an impossible standard, the sooner you’ll start experiencing deep joy and fulfillment in being okay with right where you are. As I told my child, “So long as you are doing your best, that’s all that matters.” If you are struggling with parenting or need some encouragement as a mom, you do want to miss today's episode on the secret to being a more peaceful parent (it will likely surprise you!), the importance of raising your kids to be who they are instead of who we think they should be, and how to love a difficult child. In This Episode: [03:26] - What's saving my life this week is my very favorite Apple battery case. I'm constantly asked about this when I'm with people and I am always singing the praises of it! [05:21] - My book pick of the week is an oldie but a goodie: Dear Mr. Knightley by Katherine Reay. [09:50] - Today’s guest was actually recommended by a podcast listener and I'm so grateful this listener took the time to write in and recommend Jami Amerine's book. [11:56] - I ask Jami about her early years of parenting and how she struggled with perfectionism. She shares honestly about the lessons she learned from this. [15:17] - How was Jami able to let go of trying to do everything perfectly? She expresses so much wisdom for all of us -- but especially for those who still have younger kids. [19:04] - I was intrigued by the subtitle of Jami's book and she tells the story behind it and how it wasn't what she picked... but how we both think it fits so well. [23:20] - What is Jami reading right now? I love her outside-the-box answer! [24:44] - And then she shares how she's giving up sugar (and also gives us a little teaser about her next book that she's writing... that I want to read ASAP!) [27:58] - Today’s listener question is about emotionally adjusting to the reality of giving up being a stay-at-home mom for a new lifestyle. We were introduced to this budgeting software by my brother-in-law, Justin, a few years ago. He and my husband, Jesse, are both what I would lovingly refer to as “nerds”. You know the kind of people… those people who think spreadsheets are fun. And who geek out over features in Excel. Yup, those kinds of people. You might as well poke my eyeballs out with a hot iron rod than get to me be giddy over creating spreadsheets. But nevertheless, I love Spreadsheet Nerds because they help keep people like me in line and on track! Anyway, it was around Christmas time and Justin started telling Jesse about YouNeedaBudget — what we call YNAB for short. Jesse and I had both heard of this software before, but we had been using Quicken for so long that we’d not considered changing to anything else. Well, when Jesse saw the features of YNAB, he was intrigued enough to sign up for the free trial. And it was pretty much love at first sight. Truthfully, I can’t even begin to tell you how often I’ve heard him exclaiming to me, to friends, or just to himself something about, “How cool and helpful YNAB is!” I’m such a pen and paper and cash girl, but after all his raving reviews, I finally gave in and downloaded it on my phone and had him show me how it works. It’s really, really impressive. I love how we can see exactly how we’re doing in every budget in just one glance. And since we have multiple budgets for our businesses and personal, it allows us to track them all in one app. Which is so handy! They usually only offer a 30-day trial, but they are giving you all a FREE 60-day trial so you can really get a feel for it and see how well it works. We are so excited to share the beginnings of the Nurtured Heart Approach with our very special guests: NHA creator, Howard Glasser and co-author of Transforming the Difficult Child, the Nurtured Heart Approach, Jennifer Easley. Our host for this show will be Josh Kuersten. This podcast was pre-recorded Howard Glasser creator of The Nurtured Heart Approach® is dedicated to awakening the greatness in all children and in particular the world's intense and challenging children. He is the author of eight books including, Transforming the Difficult Child, currently the top-selling book on ADHD; Notching Up the Nurtured Heart Approach: The New Inner Wealth Initiative, a leading book on school interventions; and All Children Flourishing, on using the Approach with all children, difficult or not. F He is currently working on his latest release entitled Igniting Greatness. Jennifer Easley, is an elementary school military counselor. Most children I work with are well aware they are at risk of loosing a parent to war or the parent they once knew returns home, forever changed from military trauma. This loss of innocence at such a tender age merits special support and recognition for those small, child warriors! I am deeply gratified to be a part of the child's and families' home support team! Jennifer co-authored the book that details the Approach with Howard, Transforming the Difficult Child, The Nurtured Heart Approach; and was a huge support and contributor to the book, Transforming the Difficult Child, Stories of Transformaion.
