On this episode of LiberatED, LaRae Hulsey tells host Kerry McDonald about her remarkable journey from enrolling her children in a Prenda microschool in rural Apache County, Arizona to launching her own program, LaRae's Learning Lab. Along the way, her family faced extraordinary challenges, including her husband's leukemia diagnosis, which required relocating for medical treatment. LaRae explains how the flexibility and personal connections of microschooling provided stability during crisis, why she eventually stepped into a leadership role herself, and how her microschool now serves a dozen students in a community where alternative education options are rapidly expanding. She also offers encouragement and practical advice for aspiring founders who may doubt their ability to start something of their own. In a conversation about resilience, purpose, and the power of personalized learning, LaRae's story highlights how education entrepreneurship often begins with a parent's desire to help their own children thrive. *** Sign up for Kerry's free, weekly email newsletter on education trends at edentrepreneur.org. The fall of copyright troll Prenda Law is, according to the ABA Journal, "part of legal folklore." We talk with the attorney who kicked over the first domino, Morgan Pietz.Prenda Law was the copyright trolling operation that filed approximately 20,000 abusive BitTorrent lawsuits targeting anonymous defendants for alleged pornography downloads. Morgan's work on that case resulted in criminal prosecutions and a now-famous sanctions order by Judge Otis Wright, called the Star Trek order (e.g., though the plaintiffs "boldly probe the outskirts of law, the only enterprise they resemble is RICO").Morgan discusses how the Prenda Law scheme worked, what made it cross the line from aggressive litigation into fraud, and how he uncovered the deception through creative investigation and a willingness to question claims that didn't sound right. The conversation also covers Morgan's work on anonymous speech litigation.
In this episode of LiberatED, Kerry McDonald talks with Lexi Hanson and Kayla Phipps, two "superguides" at Prenda, a national microschooling network founded in 2018 by Kelly Smith that has since served roughly 10,000 students in hundreds of tiny schools across the US. Lexi and Kayla share their journeys from traditional education settings to launching and guiding their own Prenda microschools. They discuss how the Prenda model—serving K–8 learners in small, mixed-age environments of less than a dozen students—fosters autonomy, personalized learning, and meaningful connections. The conversation explores how demand for microschools surged during the COVID-19 pandemic and why interest in these flexible learning environments continues today. As Super Guides, Lexi and Kayla mentor new microschool founders, offering feedback and support to ensure high-quality learning experiences. They also describe what a typical day looks like in a Prenda microschool, including core academic time and community-building activities that balance structure with independence. Whether you're an educator considering a new path or a parent exploring alternative education options, this episode offers inspiration and practical insights into the growing microschool movement. Their advice to prospective guides and families is simple: Just do it! *** Sign up for Kerry's free, weekly email newsletter on education trends at edentrepreneur.org.

See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Come Funziona?

Karen Glass discusses the power of narration in education, sharing her journey from homeschooling mom to Charlotte Mason education expert and author of "Know and Tell: The Art of Narration."• Narration is simply telling back what you've learned, a natural human activity we use to build relationships• Charlotte Mason's educational philosophy centers on two key principles: "children are born persons" and "education is a science of relations"• Narration develops multiple cognitive skills including comprehension, memory, ordering of thoughts, and communication• The progression of narration moves from oral telling (ages 6-9) to written narration (10-12) to formal composition (junior high and high school)• Narration can be applied to any subject and take many forms—oral, written, artistic, dramatic, or even through building models• Children don't always enjoy narration, but it works effectively regardless, developing communication skills that serve students throughout life• Special needs children can benefit from narration through alternative expressions like drawing, building, or dramatic play• The mental processes involved in narration help students build connections between subjects and with their prior knowledgeAbout our guestKaren Glass has been studying and learning about Charlotte Mason's philosophy of education since 1994. She homeschooled her four children who are now all adult graduates, but her passion for this life-giving view of education has not diminished and she welcomes opportunities to share it with others. She has spoken at homeschool conferences, taught online classes, conducted teacher training at schools, and served as an adjunct professor to teach college-level classes. She is the author of several books based upon Charlotte Mason's ideas, including Consider This, Know and Tell: The Art of Narration, In Vital Harmony, and most recently Much May Be Done with Sparrows. After living in Krakow, Poland for almost 25 years, she now lives in rural Indiana where she continues to read, learn, teach, and write.Connect with KarenOrder Know and TellLearn more about Karen's workGot a story to share or question you want us to answer?
