As prazas son limitadas.

The Prison in 12 Landscapes is a documentary that came out in 2016. It's a beautiful film. Intimate interviews, lush landscapes, and deep attention to the complexity of people's lives, from cities to small rural towns. If it wasn't in the title, it could take a while to realize that its central topic is prisons, and how they shape life far beyond their walls. The prison itself – the sprawling complex of buildings surrounded by fences, razor wire, guards – is just part of the prison system. There are also police and courts. County jails. That's still just what we can see. Like an iceberg, the system of incarceration has a whole lot more going on under the surface. But that's what keeps it afloat. Micol Seigel is an activist, scholar, and teacher who's been studying this carceral system for a long time. Her most recent book, Violence Work, looks at how police and policing are a primary vector of violence enforced and enacted by the state – which is to say, governments. But lately she's been focused on another part of this carceral iceberg. One that is maybe less obviously part of the same system. That's the foster care system. That might come as a bit of a surprise. We think of foster parents as maybe the holiest of parents, doing that hard work of taking in kids they've never met before, who desperately need a place to go. A home. But there's a larger system at play. On this week's Inner States, Micol describes how the foster system, and the Department of Child Services that helps run it, is also totally intertwined with the broader system of policing in this country. That doesn't mean Micol is saying all foster parents are bad people. Just that they – and really, all of us – are part of a bigger carceral system that separates people from their communities, their families, and, sometimes, children from their parents. As a foster and adoptive parent herself, Micol has become deeply familiar with this system. Credits Inner States is produced and edited by me, Alex Chambers, with support from Violet Baron, Eoban Binder, Jillian Blackburn, Mark Chilla, Avi Forrest, LuAnn Johnson, Sam Schemenauer, Jay Upshaw, Payton Whaley, and Kayte Young. Our Executive Producer is Eric Bolstridge. Our theme song is by Amy Oelsner and Justin Vollmar. We have additional music from the artists at Universal Production Music and Ramón Monrás-Sender.

Racconti di: Paola Amato, Daniele Baron, Erica Bonansea, Valerio Bracco, Simone Capitani, Luisella Ceretta, Flavia Cerutti, Ernesto Chiabotto, Angela Chirone, Angela Delgrosso, Riccardo Galasso, Silvano Giacosa, Giulia Giraudi, Antonella Manduca, Luisa Martucci, Gabriella Mosso, Rosanna Musa, Simone Siviero. Over 100 million people are displaced worldwide. That's the equivalent of the 14th biggest country in the globe. The world seems to be in a refugee crisis and yet for some, like Social Impact Pioneer, Dale Buscher – there are practical pragmatic solutions, developed over decades of lived experience. Dale's professional journey reaches back to 1988. His extensive experience includes supporting refugees from Vietnam to Haiti, Bosniak refugees in Croatia, displaced Kurds in Northern Iraq, and many more. During our conversation Dale explains how situations and circumstances surrounding any one person who is forcibly displaced is complex, nuanced and dynamic. Navigating these challenges requires a deep understanding of the refugee experience itself but the experience of Dale and his colleagues means that there is support, guidance and time-tested help available. Enter the all-encompassing guide: "Building Livelihoods: A Field Manual for Practitioners in Humanitarian Settings." Dale's robust background, including advising the UN High Commissioner for Refugees and authoring the field handbook "Operational Protection in Camps and Settlements," ensures his insights are practical, steeped in lived experience, and transformative. And be ready to hear Dale share why the Refugee Self-Reliance Initiative - a joint effort by the Women's Refugee Commission – where Dale is currently Vice President of Programs and RefugePoint is a vital programme in helping promote a future where refugees regain financial independence and understand self-resilience. Whether you're a humanitarian practitioner, a supporter of refugee rights, whether you are displaced or a listener with a desire for deeper understanding, this podcast is your compass in the intricate landscape of refugee support and self-reliance. This podcast is more than a manual; it's a portal into the reality of humanitarian aid, the importance of self-reliance, and the tangible ways we can contribute to building a better future for displaced individuals. So, tune in, and let Dale Buscher guide you through the challenges and real-life experiences of supporting refugees around the globe. Why is financial inclusion for displaced people a problem? If you are a migrant or a refugee, if you have left your home due to forced reasons, and you arrive in another country, chances are that financial services are not accessible to you. The lack of an ID card or the lack of recognition of the ID card provided to you is a barrier; the lack of your credit history and collateral are additional barriers; language differences and stereotypes; as well as the lack of information from financial service providers will all hold you back from getting access to financial services. And the consequences are that you may not be able to get a job, pay your taxes or set up your own enterprise. And yet, as we will hear in this podcast, improving financial services for displaced people, unlocks a wealth of economic and social growth for this population, as well as benefits and gains for the countries that hosts them. Meet Social Impact Pioneers Micol Pistelli and Ricardo Martin Garcia Tafur who have been working tirelessly to develop better financial service models for forcibly displaced people. Financial services that help migrants, refugees, and asylum seekers, as well as internal displaced people to get contributing to their local host communities and economies. Micol is a Senior Financial Inclusion Coordinator at UNHCR, The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees – which has the mandate to help and protect refugees, forcibly displaced communities, and stateless people around the world. Whilst Ricardo is a Senior Operations Officer at the IFC and UNHCR Joint Initiative that fosters private sector engagement into forced displacement contexts at the International Finance Corporation (the IFC) which is part of the World Bank Group. Both are deeply focused on building financial and economic inclusion of forcibly displaced populations. During this podcast conversation Micol and Ricardo roll up the blind on the economic case for having better financially integrated people in host communities. They explain: “If people migrating into your area are economically contributing to your area, paying their taxes and putting their efforts back into your community – there can be positives for everyone.” Together they have been working directly with financial service providers across South America – the data that they have collected reveals the challenges facing migrants and, also the market opportunities that open, if forcibly displaced people are better served. Get ready to hear very practical ways for banks and other financial service providers to better support migrants, refugees and asylum seekers, while maximizing the gains and benefits for the financial sectors in their host countries. From designing and implementing tailored and people-centered value propositions, to sensitization and breaking paradigms, to recruitment opportunities and service delivery. Listen in to hear more. Dr. Romain Micol, CEO, and Dr. Tom VanCott, Chief Scientific Officer, at Combined Therapeutics, are excited about the opportunities to design mRNA vaccines that target specific tissue cells to restrict protein expression and have stronger potency in the fight against infectious disease and cancer. They have designed their vaccine platform to keep the vaccine antigen expression at the injection site, protecting the liver, kidney, and heart.  Romain explains, "So mRNA vaccines are highly effective both for infectious diseases and, more recently, to treat cancer. It's an ideal technology that is relatively easy to make and to manufacture. It could be very rapid and can get expression in vivo where protein would be folded properly. We can currently use the mRNA vaccine to deliver multiple materials to prevent infectious diseases and also cure cancer." "The main challenge we see at Combined Therapeutics, both for vaccines for infectious disease and for cancer treatment, is in their biodistribution and potency. Our platform at Combined Therapeutics is a proprietary technology that enables us to focus protein expression in specific tissue cells and prevent off-target expression in selected cell tissue. At the moment, our R&D program covers both oncology and infectious disease." Thomas elaborates, "What we've done here at Combined Therapeutics is we're taking advantage of something called micro RNAs. Now, what are micro RNAs? A lot of people don't know about them, but they're really just small RNA molecules that are naturally present throughout the body. They're actually fairly small molecules. They're about 22 nucleotides in size." "But what's really important is that they're distributed differentially throughout the body. So, if you look at the lungs or the heart or the muscles, you'll see a different array of micro RNAs that are expressed in each one of those tissues, and that is exactly what we take advantage of. What we do in our mRNA is engineer into it what we call these blockers. And what's a blocker? A blocker is really a binding site for the micro RNA." @Combined_tx #CombinedTherapeutics #mRNA #Vaccines #Cancer #Oncology #InfectiousDisease  combinedtx.com Download the transcript here
