He’s never had a “boss” and has created 6 innovative companies in advertising, publishing, coaching and career planning—and now on the Internet—over the last 40 years. Don Hutcheson- Lifelong Entrepreneur Don was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia. He was educated there in public schools and attended Emory University. Don served 3 years in the United States Army in Military Army Security Agency. He was set to take a teaching job when a friend of his started a magazine and asked him to join him in the magazine field. “After 6 companies later in the fields of publishing, advertising and career planning and now on the internet I have been a lifelong entrepreneur.” – Don Hutcheson Strategically Transitioning Don has learned over the past 45 years as an entrepreneur that you must first answer the question “who?” Most start with their “why” or their “purpose.” “If you don’t know your who and you don’t know who you are from every perspective possible, not just your skills, but your abilities and your values and your personal style your stage of adult development. If you don’t know who you are and how you engage the world it is virtually impossible to then do that strategy to figure out your why your how and your when.” – Don Hutcheson In order to find out who you are there is an assessment that will tell you what your innate abilities from the inside out. It is a 3 hour test that can tell you your innate problem solving communications and learning styles that no other assessment does. Don has also put together another assessment to figure out your innate abilities . Discovering What You Are Good At Using the assessment that Don talks about in his interview also helps a person figure out what they are good at. It is likely that younger people could learn early on their strengths and weaknesses to lead them in a more practical and applicable pathway that fits their abilities. “A person who knows the range of his abilities is better able to use them in his life and work and in his relations with others, including his fellow workers..” – Don Hutcheson To hear more from Don Hutcheson download this episode. Don Hutcheson is a lifelong entrepreneur: an inventor, author, coach and now, podcaster. He hosts the podcast: “Discover Your Talent—Do What You Love,” three days a week in order to help his listeners find their true talents and use those talents to build careers of success, satisfaction and freedom. Over the past 40 years, Don has created six innovative companies in advertising, publishing, coaching, career planning and podcasting. Don co-founded his first business right after he graduated from college. With partner Fred Brown, he created Brown's Guides, a recreational guide book for Georgia and beyond that is still published today. Nine years later he co-founded his first advertising agency, Hutcheson & Anderson. A few years after that, he co-founded his second: Hutcheson Shutze. After taking an assessment that measured his "natural abilities", as opposed to his interests, skills, IQ or personality, Don was inspired to create his own assessment, The Whole Person Technology™. This was the first-ever holistic approach to educational, career and life planning, which he ultimately transformed from paper and pencil to an online version. During this period, Don co-authored two popular books on career planning: The Lemming Conspiracy and Don’t Waste Your Talent. Don decided to leverage his 30 years experience as entrepreneur, inventor and writer to become a coach. A few years later, he founded and published the first online magazine to offer tools and insights into issues that impact every lawyer’s success and satisfaction and every firm’s profitability. When it was published, The Complete Lawyer was distributed by the bar associations in 36 states. Most recently, Don has created and launched a new podcast, Discover Your Talent~Do What You Love. The podcast series is designed for people of every age and background who are looking to build a life and career that uses the best of who they are and to enjoy a life of success, satisfaction and freedom. Don served a tour of duty in the US Army as a Russian linguist in the Army Security Agency: Voice & Intercept. After he was honorably discharged, Don returned to Emory University to complete his BA in Russian Language and Literature.

My guest today, on the confidence boosting Join Up Dots free podcast interview is a man who I was happy to spend an hour with when being interviewed on his successful online show Discover Your Talent. So you know that he is a podcaster. But as you will see he is so much more than that too. After leaving the army as a young man with an honorable discharge, he attended Emory University graduating with a BA in Russian Language and Literature, before taking the first steps on a path that so many of us find ourselves on. Being directed by the ideals of his father, and very little imput by what our guest truly wanted himself, he begain studying to become a dentist. Which was a false step in the wrong direction, as without a doubt at his core he is an entrepreneur born and bred, and a very good one at that. Since 1972 he has founded a new business every few years ranging from publishing to advertising and most things in between. As he now says ” As it has turned out, my experiences as entrepreneur, inventor, writer and coach in advertising, publishing and career planning is the perfect foundation of skills, passion and talent to excel in the meteoric rise of podcasting worldwide. Add to that the disturbing statistic that 87% of people worldwide do NOT enjoy the work they do every day and this podcast channel truly is an idea whose time has come…. For me and for the people who listen to it around the world.” So there we have it. At his core he is a man who needs to love his work, feel inspired everyday and make a difference to everyone that he meets. It doesn't matter what environment he finds himself in….the work has to be classed as a passion for him to truly discover his talent So does he wish that he could go back in time and start his podcast even earlier than he did? And with that shocking stat of 87% not enjoying their work, what does he truly believe he can do to make a difference to the world? Well let's find out as we bring onto the show to start joining up dots with the one and only Don Hutchenson Show Highlights During the show we discussed such weighty topics with Don Hutcheson such as: Don shares why he feels some of the things that he invented in his life, which didn't make any money, were simply created before their time. They sometime need the right time to grow and be the things he hoped they would be. Why we all need the quiet time in our lives to really assess what we want to achieve. We need to block out the noise and feel the emotions that are leading us. Why upskilling is so important in our lives, no matter what level we find ourselves on. Stop and look where we need to go and let knowledge help ease the way. and lastly…. Why Don believes that “Knowing Your Why” is actually the second question that we should be asking ourselves. Instead we should be focusing on “The Who”……do you trust yourself and know yourself?

There is a structure or blueprint to being a successful person but there is no perfect formula. The design differs for everyone, as guest expert Don Hutcheson explains. It is necessary to dig into who you are and what you are supposed to be doing before attempting to be successful at any one thing. The first quality all successful people have in common is they take full responsibility for their own self-knowledge and self-awareness, and they avoid mindless conformity. If you start with a solid base of knowing who you are on the inside, you eliminate the guessing which leads to reactions and unsatisfactory career choices. Other things successful people have in common is they are all on a lifelong journey of learning, and they surround themselves with like-minded people. They read educational resources about how to use their individual talents and how to strengthen their emotional intelligence. People go through what Don calls “turning points” every 6 or 7 years. If they have a continuous mindset to keep getting better, these turning points will enhance their already honed abilities. To be successful: Do research about yourself and your abilities Set goals for yourself Surround yourself with the right people Accept failure and learn from it Be disciplined Trust your instincts Make strategic decisions, not knee-jerk reactions Don’t be miserable Journal about your experiences Seek out people who have the same values! A lifelong entrepreneur, inventor, author and coach, Don Hutcheson, created the Discover Your Talent—Do What You Love podcast to help people find their talents and use them to build a career of success, satisfaction and freedom. Don has never had a “boss” and has created 6 innovative companies in advertising, publishing, coaching and career planning – and now on the Internet – over the last 35 years. A Women Who Has Influenced Your Life The most influential women in Don’s life were his mother and grandmother. In his experience, men can learn about compassion, creativity, and collaboration from women, which are the defining traits of great leaders. What He Sees That Hold Women Back Don says he noticed, unfortunately that when women speak up they get called the B-word. It’s about balance for men and women finding a life of success, satisfaction, and freedom. Life shouldn’t be all about money, power, control, and wealth; it should be about spiritual, emotional, and metaphysical nurturing. Identifying what success means to you and what leadership looks like in your life. What He Has Learned from Women According to Don it is difficult for women because they deal with biases. Women need to realize what the best strategy is in an intelligent, wise, and present way by making a contribution and getting their needs met without having to sellout or giving in. The Necessary Changes The growing awareness of the Internet has a profound effect on us all. People can see highly articulate women stepping out of their box with the use of social media. What Are You Excited About? Don’s business partner and long-time ally Jan created the Discover Your Own Talent Podcast about a year ago with over hundreds of episodes on people sharing their life’s journeys. They are going to be offering membership groups for different segments, a variety of courses, and tools for subscribers to access. Talent and Mindfulness are definitely related. If you live a mindful life you are more likely to be in touch with your talents. Some people don't discover their true talents until they are in their teens or twenties. Others don't discover their talents until they are well intotheir careers and then feel it's too late to switch and make money doing what they love. Some people don't discover their talent until retirement and still others never feel they have discovered their talent, even to the very end of their lives. Today I'm joined by my friend, Don Hutcheson, who has built seven companies and worked with hundreds of people. He hosts a podcast called, 'Discover Your Talent, Do What You Love'. As you'll discover, he has tremendous knowledge and insight into 'Talent and Mindfulness'.Guest:Don HutchesonFeatured in 036 Don Hutcheson: Get Into Your Feelings and Out of Your Thinking to Live a Full LifeListen to his podcast: www.DiscoverYourTalentPodcast.com Quotes:If you have a talent, use it in every which way possible. Life is not an intellectual equation. Enstein said, I never happened on one of my discoveries through the process of rational thinking. I think the more we can get into our feelings and into our beingness and out of our thinking, that’s the only way we can live a full life. And mindfulness has done that.Thoughts on BreathingIt’s seminal to it. I don’t know how to do mindfulness without it. I was even more conscious of that when I was doing different kinds of yoga. I have a lower back issue, I’ll lay on my back to let my lower back stretch out and it’s all about breathing. It’s all about breathing as deeply as I can and as slowly and quietly as I can.Suggested ResourcesBook: The Power of Now by Eckhart TolleApp: NoneAdvice for Newbie The big hurdle to overcome about mindfulness, meditation and consciousness is just the nomenclature because people think it sounds eastern or too metaphysical. The way to get that out of the equation is by reading The Relaxation Response by Herbert Benson, a Harvard professor who broke apart meditation and made it more pragmatic and more scientific. You just count your breaths. Just do that without interruption and see what you feel. What you feel is called relaxation response.

Currently painting real people and situations using oils on canvas, artist William Cain recalls, “I’ve been a model, actor and fashion illustrator lucky enough to travel around world. Wanting to get away from judging people by their looks, growing tired of the Hollywood "casting couch" mentality, he dropped out for awhile. Approaching his 40s, thinking about aging, he took a corporate art job, but found it “soul crushing”. Before work, he would get up early in the morning to paint.

It doesn't have to be that way. It doesn't mean that I am coming in and telling people what to do. Love is my Essence. Guidance my Passion!”
