Holding Up The Ladder

Who is art for? And how are we to engage with it? Should art be in museums or outside in parks, town squares or on the side of buildings? Is art the province of an elite few, the private collector, with a rarefied language that excludes? And why do artists make art, is it for ourselves, do we exist because there's an audience, is it because of our ego? My guest today thinks so.eL Seed is a contemporary artist whose practice bridges painting and sculpture, developing a unique visual language inspired by the tradition of calligraphy and the energy of urban art. He uses art to explore ideas around identity, cultural heritage, creating connection and inspiring ideas of unity. About how he engages with the communities where his art is placed. Whether it be the Coptic community of Zaraeeb in Cairo or a rural community in Nepal. For eL Seed art is an amplifier, it's about humanity and that really comes through in our discussion.I remember listening to an interview with British sculptor Anthony Gormley, perhaps best known for his life size and life-like cast iron figures of men, he said that art belongs in the world, that ‘art is about life and it needs to be in life.' That it can change the way we behave, think and feel. That's exactly how I would describe eL Seed's work.Guest: eL SeedTitle: ‘Artists exist because there is an audience'Music: Eminem Stan, Booba, Fairuz, Umm KultumLinksWebsite - https://elseed-art.com/IG - https://www.instagram.com/elseed/Youtube - https://www.youtube.com/@elseedart Cairo project - https://youtu.be/g9M3HIjHuq0?si=0tfE03TxY5nxvJaE Find out ways to support the Israel-Palestine project click herePodcast WebsitePodcast IG Hosted on Acast. This week on Babel, Jon Alterman speaks with eL Seed, an award-winning French-Tunisian artist whose monumental artwork blending the styles of Arabic calligraphy and graffiti is spreading in the Arab world and far beyond. His smaller works are in some of the most important museum collections around the world, but he takes special pride in his process of working with communities to select meaningful quotations to inspire his art and then to execute that artwork together. Jon and eL Seed discuss the cultural and political forces that shaped eL Seed's artistic evolution, as well as art's role in spurring social change. Then, Jon continues the conversation with Martin Pimentel and Natasha Hall to discuss the ways art anchors Middle Eastern diaspora communities to their homelands and interacts with political movements across the Arab world. ¿A qué tenemos miedo? ¿Un color oscuro? ¿A permitir contrastes? ¿A pintar vidas?

What if art was used for good, as a means to create a smarter and more holistic society? Faouzi Khlifi, also known as “eL Seed”, grew up in a modest social class in Paris, his father worked at a car factory and his mother was a nanny. Art wasn’t a part of his life, he just loved to draw. Today, eL Seed is best known for fusing Arabic calligraphy with graffiti to paint colorful, swirling messages of hope and peace on buildings in Tunisia, Nepal and quite a few countries around the world. During Tolerance and Inclusivity week at Expo 2020 Dubai, eL Seed joined a group of panelists to discuss the power an art piece has on a community and its ability to shape the society as a whole. His work incorporates traditional Arabic calligraphy, a style he calls calligraffiti. Which is a composite term of calli - from the word calligraphy and graffiti.Find out more about el Seed here.I wanted to share this video with you for three reasons:The message behind his story is important - to be aware of and sensitive to cultural difference. The project is very moving and emotional and I think during this in this time it shows the importance of human connection, togetherness and trying to understand othersEnglish is his third or second language. When you watch the video you might need subtitles because at times it is challenging to understand his pronunciation. However, I wanted you to hear it because you will see that despite some little mistakes and some challenges with pronunciation, the audience is so captivated and engaged with everything he has to say. You will see what I mean.So before we discuss anything about the video and before you watch it I want to share with you two things to do while you watch the video. It's 10 minutes long so not very long so you should be able to watch it a few times. In the video, he shares a quote in Arabic which translates in English to -Anyone who wants to see the sunlight clearly needs to wipe his eyes first. I want you to think about how this quote is linked to this project and what it means to you. Vocabulary in the Video: Anamorphic - Relating to producing different optical imaging effects or illusions. He created an anamorphic piece which means he painted several different buildings so that when the builds are viewed from far away or a vantage point it creates one big image. It's an optical illusion that looks different from far away compared to close up. unity - coming together as a whole. For example, all the buildings come together to create one image. The people also come together as a community. Perceive something - verb to be aware of something or come to realise something in a different way.Perception - noun - is the way you think about something, your ideas based on your experience and background. neglected - suffering or lack of proper care Isolated - far away from other places, buildings, or people; remote. The key person of the project - the main person who allowed the project to happenThe project moved him - to emotionally affect someone so strongly.Open a dialogue - start talking about a sensitive issue or to start talking about somethingTo relate to something - To put yourself in someone's shoes - Discussion Questions:  1. What's the difference between Live from the garbage Live in the garbage 2. What is the difference between ‘shining light on something' and  ‘bringing light to someone  or something3. If you want to see the real person maybe you should change your angle. What does this mean? Why did he say this?  4. Do you think the artist thought the finished product was more important or the journey? Why?Links Interview in FrenchArts and Culture Panel Discussion

Michael Petry, author, artist and Director of the Museum of Contemporary Art in London talks with Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson host of OUTTAKE VOICES™ about his new book “The Word Is Art” that addresses how contemporary global artists incorporate text and language into their works that speaks to some of the most pressing issues of the 21st century. In the digital and online age words have become more important than ever with text becoming information and information striving to become a free form of expression. “The Word Is Art” looks at the work of a diverse range of artists including Annette Messager, Barbara Kruger, Cerith Wyn Evans, Christian Marclay, Christopher Wool, Chun Kwang Young, eL Seed, Fiona Banner, Ghada Amer, Glenn Ligon, Harland Miller, Jenny Holzer, Kay Rosen, Laure Prouvost, Martin Creed, Rachel Whiteread, Raymond Pettibon, Roni Horn, Tania Bruguera, Zhang Huan and many more interpreting how the digital and online age have made words more important than ever. “The Word Is Art” takes us on a fascinating and richly illustrated tour interpreting these trending global art forms. We talked to Michael about his inspiration for creating this book and his spin on our LGBTQ issues. When asked what his personal commitment is to LGBTQ civil rights Petry stated, “I’m one of the ancients who’s been around fighting for LGBTQ rights since the early eighties and I’ve been involved in so many different ways over the years. I consider myself queer because I think that is a broader term that for me represents who I am and what I think and part of that commitment as a queer who is an artist and who also is an author and a curator is to try and bring queer artists to the foreground of the art world. We only have to think back a few years to realize that LGBTQ artists were very marginalized and that’s still the case for many people. In the LGBTQ movement every year I curate a Pride Exhibition in London which I really hope to introduce LGBTQ artists not only to that community but to the straight community and I work within all the structures that are available whether that’s museums or the corporate structure to get that recognition for LGBTQ people because I think what is at issue in the broader political sphere is this notion of fear. Fear of others and of course that fear is not limited to the general public. It’s also in the art world.” Michael Petry has written a number of books, including “Installation Art”, “The Art of Not Making: the new artist/artisan relationship”, “Nature Morte: Contemporary Artists Reinvigorate the Still-Life Tradition” and his most recent work “The Word Is Art” all published by Thames & Hudson. In 2019 he will be speaking and exhibiting his work worldwide. For More Info: michaelpetry.com Hear 450+ LGBT Interviews @OUTTAKE VOICES

For the second episode of the new season, we are thrilled to present our exclusive conversation with two of Dubai’s most influential and iconic artists, eL Seed and Afra Atiq!Produced by Dr. Spencer Striker, Digital Media Professor at the American University in Dubai, the show is created with the help of a talented student production team at AUD.About eL SeedBorn in Paris to Tunisian parents, eL Seed travels the world, making art in Paris, New York, Jeddah, Melbourne, Gabes, Doha and beyond. His goal: to create dialogue and promote tolerance as well as change global perceptions of what Arabic means. In 2012, for instance, he painted a message of unity on a 47-meter-high minaret on the Jara mosque in Gabes, Tunisia. This piece and others can be found in his book, Lost Walls: Graffiti Road Trip through TunisiaRecently he created a sprawling mural in the Manshiyat Naser neighborhood of Cairo that spans 50 buildings and can only be viewed from a local mountaintop. Intending to honor the historic garbage collectors of the Manshiyat Naser neighborhood, the piece reads, "Anyone who wants to see the sunlight clearly needs to wipe his eye first."“A street artist born in Paris to Tunisian parents, eL Seed did not learn to read or write Arabic until his late teens, but when he did his renewed interest in his heritage had a profound effect on his art.” — BBCAbout Afra AtiqAfra Atiq is an Emirati award-winning poet, having recently won the 2017 ADMAF Creativity Award.
