What does it mean to be a man? It can be an incendiary question in some circles. But Brian Tome brings his Enneagram Eight energy to the topic as we explore his new book, The Five Marks of a Man: finding your path to courageous manhood, “I didn't have that definitive moment where I crossed from boyhood to manhood because no one ever declared me a man. No one ever told me that,” explains Brian. “It's not an age thing. It's not what kind of truck or Prius you drive. It's an attitude and a certain approach to life.” We explore his willingness to embrace vulnerability and live purposefully as part of this approach. It's a passionate conversation that sparks the question, “How would you characterize your understanding of manhood?” ------- About Brian Tome Brian Tome has been leading men for over two decades. Whether it's on an adventure motorcycle over the Rockies or in a boardroom, he knows the power of challenge, brotherhood, and no-nonsense leadership. Brian is a builder who founded and leads Crossroads Church, one of the largest churches in America with locations in multiple states and a national digital footprint. He's also written five books; hosts The Aggressive Life podcast; and started Man Camp, a primitive weekend camping experience that's driven 20,000 men to reclaim the code of manhood. Brian spends his free time hunting, camping, or rehabbing a 1978 Jeep CJ-7. He lives with his wife, Libby, in Cincinnati. www.briantome.com The Five Marks of a Man The Aggressive Life Podcast P.S. Enneagram 8s are legendary for having a powerful energy that sometimes enters the room before they do. They do everything with gusto, including their propensity to measure everything as strong vs. weak—even themselves. So, they avoid being vulnerable at all costs, often choosing to share their stories of frailty only after the fact. But other Enneagram types can see this take no prisoners, no slowing down charge as lacking in compassion. For the 8, it sometimes lacks connection. So how can Enneagram 8s stop being so independent and lean into vulnerability and compassion to enjoy deeper relationships and more in-depth experiences? Today on the show, my client and friend Zoi Jones joins me to walk us through her life as an Enneagram Type 8. She shares how her intense 8 energy helped her hold three jobs while working her way through law school and helps her level up her business as Partner in a personal injury law firm. She'll walk us through her favorite thing about being an Enneagram 8 mom to three children under five. Plus, how using the all the tools of the Enneagram (especially her 7 Wing) has helped her lead with more compassion while walking with her husband as he transitions in his career. Listen in as Zoi shares her biggest challenges as Enneagram 8 and the most significant breakthrough working with me as her coached helped her to achieve in her life. Welcome back to Enneagram IRL, the weekly podcast where we go beyond Enneagram theory and dive into practical understanding, new clarity, and fresh insight. We're talking about how each type is in REAL LIFE so you can remember – you're more than just a number. On this week's episode of Enneagram IRL, we meet with Jessica Denise Dickson, a life empowerment coach who believes that when Black women heal, the world heals. She believes that the path to personal and collective healing comes through embodying our Enneagram and liberation work. Jessica supports clients, through groups and one-on-one work, with the reclamation of our full humanity - healing work that leads us to equity, justice, and freedom. We discuss that when we do this work, we live more authentically with self-trust, self-safety, and fully-embodied freedom, and this echoes into our communities and changes the world. We explore Jessica's beautiful and powerful experience as an Enneagram Eight whose love for life, people, and justice is so evident and quite contagious! “Fight me.” –Lizzie Bennet, probably. No matter the challenge, Eights will rise to it. Join us this episode as we talk about megalomaniacal dictators and strong independent women and every Eight in between. This week, we're asking the important questions, like, How do you write every Enneagram type in one story? and, What if Lizzie Bennet had been cruelly experimented on and ended up in the movie Sky High?
In this episode, I share the coaching space with an Enneagram Eight from the other side of the globe in Cape Town, South Africa. In our conversation, we explore how the protective-nature and energetic intensity of the Type 8 structure often causes us to react in more controlling ways than intended. We sense into the somatic experience of both the charged-up intensity of protecting others as well as the gentle calmness that we settled into as we processed the emotions coming up for her. Her presence in this coaching conversation beautifully demonstrates how strength AND gentleness are both a part of those of us that lead with Type Eight. If you lead with Type Eight or have Enneagram Eights in your life, this episode is for you. Let's listen in with curiosity & compassion as we transition into the coaching space.Interested in Enneagram coaching? 8s eat intensity for breakfast. We're self-reliant and strong, and we fear being betrayed, violated or vulnerable in any way—which makes us the most misunderstood of the Enneagram types. Also known as the Protective Challenger or Active Controller, we have a passion for lust. But the subtypes of the Enneagram 8 express that passion in three distinct ways. On this episode of The Leadership Formula, I walk you through the three subtypes of the Enneagram 8, describing the self-preservation 8's no-nonsense approach to getting what they want from others without guilt or apology. I discuss the passionate, charismatic nature of the one-on-one 8 and explain how they express lust through rebellion, openly expressing how their values differ from the norm. Listen in to understand why social 8s are mistyped as 9s or 2s and learn how they rebel against social norms to protect others and promote justice. What You Will Learn A review of the 3 instinctual subtypes—self-preservation, one-on-one and social The self-preservation 8's strong, direct approach to getting what they want Why self-preservation 8s are often mistyped as Enneagram 5s What self-preservation 8s can do to allow for a wider range of feelings and develop trust in others The passionate, charismatic and rebellious nature of one-on-one 8s Why one-on-one 8s tend to take over if they don't trust the person in charge How one-on-one 8s can benefit from the power of the pause How social 8s rebel against social norms to protect others and promote justice Why social 8s are often mistyped as Enneagram 9s or 2s What social 8s can do to avoid losing themselves in service to others Connect with Tracy tracyomalley.comwww.instagram.com/tracy_omalleywww.facebook.com/tracy.omalleytwitter.com/TracyOMallwww.linkedin.com/in/tracy-o-malley/ Resources Book an Enneagram Kickstart Session:http://tracyomalley.com/workwithme/Book an Enneagram Experience:http://tracyomalley.com/workwithme/Apply for 1:1 VIP Coaching:http://tracyomalley.com/workwithme/Learn More About Enneagram Team Workshops:http://tracyomalley.com/workshops/Email info@tracyomalley.com

Being an Enneagram Eight, I use my voice to defend the innocent: children. I truly believe they are Masters in so many ways, yet our culture is so conditioned to view children as "less than" or on a lower pedestal, simply because are new to Earth so they don't have a fully developed adult brain and are not yet conditioned into robots!

Enneagram 8s are assertive, decisive, protective, independent and influential. And when we use these gifts for good, 8s are incredibly impactful leaders. But when an 8 is coming from a place of fear, protecting ourselves from vulnerability at all costs, these gifts become a wrecking ball, and we end up pushing people away. So, how can an Enneagram 8 learn to tap into compassion and use our power in service to others? On this episode of The Leadership Formula, I discuss the 8's fear of being betrayed, violated or put in a vulnerable position, describing the Challenger's motivational need to be strong and maintain a sense of control.I explain why an Enneagram 8 tends to judge people who don't assert themselves and how people experience less healthy 8s as domineering and aggressive.Listen in for insight around the intense energy of the Enneagram 8 and learn how an 8 can leverage their wings to lead with empathy and stretch into their growth number 2—the Compassionate Helper. The Enneagram tells us that there are nine basic personality types, one of which we each gravitate towards in childhood. But if you dig a little deeper, each type actually has three instinctual variants called subtypes that help explain why people of the same type can look so different. For each type, there is the self-preservation subtype, social subtype, and the one-to-one subtype. Today's guest, former journalist Kayla Craig, joins me in a conversation about how understanding her subtype as a social Eight has illuminated different aspects of her personality and influenced her interactions with her family and others. She provides wonderful insight into her relationship with emotions and what the soul of an Eight looks like. We also explore: the distinctive characteristics of the social Eight subtype vs. the self-preservation and one-to-one subtypes why social Eights can be mistyped as Enneagram Twos, and the transformational journey for Eights This episode is chock full of wisdom. You're going to love it!
In this episode, I share the coaching space with an Enneagram Eight that desires to communicate well with her spouse who leads with Type Two. We explore how vulnerability comes up for Type Eights in personal conflict, and the common misconception that all confrontation is just easy for Eights because the reality is that it's not. We also take a look at the movement to Type Five as a stress point and how that can be a way of retreating for the Eight, but how it can also be a tremendous resource for us to step back and recover. Have you ever wondered if you should write your story? Or rather, have you wondered if you should publish your story? Maybe it's a story that weaves the reader through idyllic settings and simplistic relational issues, or perhaps it's the story you lived to tell about and the reason you have hope. I know that over 5.5 years ago when I started Simply Wholehearted, I wasn't sure how to write, publish and share a book, but then I discovered hope*writers. Back in the day, it was just a podcast, and they were opening their doors to a group of wannabe writers who could learn from the experts and sojourn with like-minded friends. Since the hope*writers have become an outstanding community of thousands whose mission is to help you determine where you are on the writing journey and get you to your next path. Not only are they helping fellow writers like me, but they also were a partner in last month's Wholehearted Enneagram Summit. The hope*writers team is so amazing to work with. We decided I should record a special episode to conclude the 16th season of the podcast- Today's conversation is with Carla H. Hayden, Chief Operating Officer of h*w. She also happens to be an Enneagram Eight and incredibly well-versed in Enneagram insight. This conversation was so good because we chatted about my top 3 fav things, faith, enneagram, and writing. We also tackle the emotional struggle that might be getting in the way of creating the writing rhythm you desire. Carla is your go-to for clarity and the courage boost you might need. I'm fairly confident you will really enjoy this conversation and be excited to have Carla back on the podcast sometime soon! Here are a few FREE resources from hope*writers to help you! (psst you can get all of them!) 30- second quiz to see what stage you are at as a writer. 10 Questions to ask yourself before you write a book.If you want to grow an email list, but don't know where to start, here's a template for you. The Type Eight guest this week is actually a pastor couple- Jimmy and Kristin Scroggins who have dedicated more than twelve years to create a Christ-centered community at Family Church and over 25 years in their home with their kids. Jimmy leads as an Enneagram Eight and Kristin leads as an Enneagram Two, so I thought it would be fabulous to hear the dynamic of using the Enneagram in marriage, parenting, and leadership. Jimmy and Kristin released a book this year for parents and those who work with kids to help guide us to have the crucial conversations we need with our kids. We are going to cover how to have tough conversations with your kids, the three circles gospel tool, and of course the Enneagram. By the way, If you are interested in specific episodes about the Enneagram Type Eight check out episode #166 in my Motherhood and Enneagram series.

This reflection ends with a question about the milder version of the self. Throughout, I talk about my self as an Enneagram EIGHT and come to understand when I'm compelled to be mild, medium or hot. This is a good episode if you want to understand the nature of the Enneagram as a personality system, especially if you are a Type EIGHT. I also talk a lot about INFJs, Feelings and Thinking. This is a jargon heavy episode so newbies to personality theory should be prepared to pause frequently and use the Internet to look up words and concepts.
In this reflection I use the Thanksgiving holiday to talk about social norms we have around personal space and social interactions. [Note: I also integrate science as a religion, Enneagram EIGHT drama, and gratitude and thankfulness into the conversation.]
The Enneagram is a tool that, when used wisely and with the right guidance, can really make a difference in a leader's life. More specifically, the Triads of the Enneagram give insight into how a leader responds to situations and the lens through which they lead. The Gut Triad (Enneagram numbers 8, 9, and 1) is the topic of this episode.Together, Rob McKinnon and Brad Sytsma of McKinnon Leadership Group have logged 10,000+ hours coaching leaders to be their best selves. Now, they've teamed up to bring this weekly podcast offering their insight and experience to leaders everywhere. It's five o'clock. So pause, take a deep breath, and get ready to hear a fresh perspective on how to lead with your best self.Lead well.
In this reflection I talk about the dance between head and body (using the Enneageam system), about attempting to default the human experience and about recalibrating as we mature. Note: this reflection also mentions, gender, race, Enneagram EIGHT and FIVE, and talks around integration and disintegration.
How can you be strong and driven without being a bulldozer? What does pursuing gentleness look like when it's not something that comes naturally? Listen in as Pastor Matt and guests unpack what it's like to be an Eight on the Enneagram.
Enneagram Eights (The Challengers) are hard driving, tough, decisive, innovative, and resourceful people who make things happen. They're larger than life presence and boundless energy instills confidence in others, and people follow them. As long as they're a man, that is. Our culture reveres male Eights. People admire men who “kick ass and take names.” Sadly, we all know the word folks use to describe a woman who takes charge, stands up for what she believes, refuses to take crap from people and gets the job done. I don't need to spell it out for you, right? All to say, emale Eights are arguably the most misunderstood and unfairly treated number on the Enneagram. On today's episode of Typology, I talk with pastor, activist, musical artist, and Enneagram Eight, Melissa Greene. Affectionately called the ‘The Velvet Hammer' by her friends and fans, Melissa is true to her type. In our conversation, Melissa shares her challenging but often humorous journey as a female ight who grew up and still lives in the American South--a culture in which women are expected to be sweet and gentee...ot made of steel. You can find more of Melissa's current work through Hope Curator for Timothy's Gift (http://timothysgift.com/) hich curates concert tours with other artists designed to entertain and uplift those in maximum security prisons. Melissa is also the Cofounder of Imaginarium (www.imaginarium.life)—a fresh expression of a spiritual community in Nashville. ---- To download a PDF of a chapter from Ian's book called Finding Your Type, visit TypologyPodcast.com.
