In this episode, we talk about tapping into that deep well of inspiration and knowing that, because of that deep, rich well, your creativity and energetic reserves are GOOD. The birthday email I mentioned is here. It's full and BEAUTIFUL. I read a poem by Oriah Mountain Dreamer at the end of this episode, and I want to share it here so you can read along. These words are powerful and sweet The Invitation It doesn't interest me what you do for a living. I want to know what you ache for and if you dare to dream of meeting your heart's longing. It doesn't interest me how old you are. I want to know if you will risk looking like a fool for love, for your dream, for the adventure of being alive. It doesn't interest me what planets are squaring your moon. I want to know if you have touched the centre of your own sorrow, if you have been opened by life's betrayals or have become shrivelled and closed from fear of further pain. I want to know if you can sit with pain, mine or your own, without moving to hide it, or fade it, or fix it. I want to know if you can be with joy, mine or your own; if you can dance with wildness and let the ecstasy fill you to the tips of your fingers and toes without cautioning us to be careful, be realistic, remember the limitations of being human. It doesn't interest me if the story you are telling me is true I want to know if you can disappoint another to be true to yourself. If you can bear the accusation of betrayal and not betray your own soul. If you can be faithless and therefore trustworthy. I want to know if you can see Beauty even when it is not pretty every day. And if you can source your own life from its presence. I want to know if you can live with failure, yours and mine, and still stand at the edge of the lake and shout to the silver of the full moon, ‘Yes.' It doesn't interest me to know where you live or how much money you have. I want to know if you can get up after the night of grief and despair, weary and bruised to the bone and do what needs to be done to feed the children. It doesn't interest me who you know or how you came to be here. I want to know if you will stand in the centre of the fire with me and not shrink back. It doesn't interest me where or what or with whom you have studied. I want to know what sustains you from the inside when all else falls away. I want to know if you can be alone with yourself and if you truly like the company you keep in the empty moments. by Oriah Mountain Dreamer
Emotional Expedition: A Journey of Healing with Meghan Thomas
In life, we all have expectations. Whether it is from ourselves, the people around us, or the experiences we encounter, we set standards and anticipate specific outcomes. However, things don't always go as planned, and we are left feeling disappointed. Disappointment is a common feeling, but it can be challenging to navigate, especially when we don't understand the relationship between our expectations and disappointment. Expectations are the beliefs we hold about an event, situation, or person. It is natural to have expectations, as they help us make sense of the world around us. They help us plan, anticipate, and prepare for events. However, when our expectations are not met, we feel disappointed. The more significant our expectations, the more significant our disappointment. Brené Brown emphasizes that there are two types of expectations: Examined and expressed Unexamined and unexpressed Unexamined and unexpressed expectations, also known as "stealth expectations," are those that we keep to ourselves, and we expect others to know and fulfill them. These types of expectations are dangerous and often lead to disappointment. To manage disappointment and expectations, Brown suggests examining and communicating expectations with ourselves and others. Communicating our expectations with our loved ones or colleagues can help them understand our needs and manage their expectations. This approach can lead to healthier relationships and fewer disappointments. Examined and Expressed Expectations are when our expectations are realistic, clearly communicated, and self-aware. These expectations are intentional and thoughtful, and when they don't turn out as expected, disappointment can hurt a lot. However, it's an opportunity for meaningful connection when someone shares their hopes and dreams with us. It takes a lot of courage and vulnerability to share our Examined and Expressed Expectations with others. That's why it's important to celebrate someone's success, but also be there for them when disappointment happens. Instead of offering simple platitudes, we can show meaningful empathy by recognizing and acknowledging the courage it took to share their hopes and dreams. It's important to note that even when we have done the hard work of self-examination, we can still experience disappointment. In these moments, it's important to keep the lines of communication open and circle back to talk about our feelings and move to accountability. Waking up everyday with gratitude and the most beautiful poem that I read often.
One of my most favourite books I was ever given in the late 1990’s was a book called ‘The Invitation’ by Oriah Mountain Dreamer. It is a declaration of intent, a map into the longing of the soul. The poem is all about the desire to live passionately, face to face with ourselves and skin Listen In The post SLP 208: Self Love Quicky – The Invitation appeared first on The Wellness Couch.

Welcome back to Enneagram IRL, the weekly podcast where we go beyond Enneagram theory and dive into practical understanding, new clarity, and fresh insight. We're talking about how each type is in REAL LIFE so you can remember – you're more than just a number. On this week's episode of Enneagram IRL, we meet with Jessica Denise Dickson, a life empowerment coach who believes that when Black women heal, the world heals. She believes that the path to personal and collective healing comes through embodying our Enneagram and liberation work. Jessica supports clients, through groups and one-on-one work, with the reclamation of our full humanity - healing work that leads us to equity, justice, and freedom. We discuss that when we do this work, we live more authentically with self-trust, self-safety, and fully-embodied freedom, and this echoes into our communities and changes the world. We explore Jessica's beautiful and powerful experience as an Enneagram Eight whose love for life, people, and justice is so evident and quite contagious! Michael's new book How to Begin: Start Doing Something that Matters is now available at www.HowToBegin.com. When I was in Lisbon recently, I had one of those lovely moments of meeting a kindred spirit. It's not the same as meeting someone who's interesting or lovely, instead, there's a recognition of ‘you and I, we are similarly weird and interesting.' I gave Steven D'Souza my book, and he gave me his new book, Not Being. It's a great book that tries to navigate similar big questions that I mull over. In one section, he wrote: “Now I find more truth in poetry than in prose; in nature than in classrooms. I've come to the point where I'm tired of the narrative of development, and exhausted by the imperative for self-improvement. I'm ending the search. I want to enjoy life on the other side of these personal development projects.” You don't typically hear the first question I ask my guests; Who are you, what's your story? Sometimes people plunge into that with gusto, sometimes there's a bit of a nervous laugh - but Peter Bregman sat with this question longer than most of us, and revealed that he's more than his résumé of being a coach, teacher, and author. Get book links and resources at https://www.mbs.works/2-pages-podcast/ Peter reads two poems; ‘The Invitation' by Oriah Mountain Dreamer [reading begins at 11:40], and ‘The Guest House' by Rumi. [reading begins at 14:40] Hear us discuss: “I live my life in relation to emotion.” [16:51] | Continuing to be ambitious after achievements. [18:22] | You Can Change Other People: “We all are learning how to be honest without learning how to be helpful.” [20:46] | Acknowledging and responding to struggle: “If you can't empathise, you will never be an ally.” [23:55]

La columnista de bienestar Yanina Kesman comparte y analiza un poema del libro "La invitación" de la autora Oriah Mountain Dreamer.
The Invitation is a prose poem by Oriah Mountain Dreamer. Many years after the poem was written and had become famous, the author wrote a book based on the poem, The Invitation (1999), by Oriah Mountain Dreamer. Oriah is a story-teller. This poem offers an invitation to every single one of us to "show up" in the universe. She reminds us that we do not serve the universe by being small. Rather, we serve the universe by making the most out of our lives. #poem #life #love #universe #lovepoetry

Today on Sheer Clarity, we continue our three-part series on diversity and inclusion with part two. In the last episode, we discussed the power of learning your heart story, and today we continue this discussion by talking about the power of learning another person’s heart story. Instead of taking a big global approach or national approach to addressing the problem of divisiveness and hatred, we’re taking an inside-out approach by focusing on the human heart. Kevin suggests that when you know your own heart and are prepared to share it, then you can find other human beings who are also willing and share your hearts with each other. If this is done with sincerity and vulnerability, there is an enormous amount of connection building, empathy, and healing that occurs. Tuning in today, you’ll hear about what it takes to be able to really engage with another human being, and what we can learn about this from Oriah Mountain Dreamer’s poem “The Invitation”. Find out some practical advice on how to share your story, how to decide who to share your story with, how to set the tone for openness and vulnerability, and even the topics you should cover to guide the conversation and help you really connect with each other’s heart stories. Key Points From This Episode: How today’s topic falls within the current three-part series on diversity and inclusion. Why Kevin feels it’s important to take an inside-out approach to the problems of division and hatred. How to go about learning another human heart by talking to each other about your life story. The first of the three things you need to be able to engage with another human being: having the desire to do so.The second thing: the willingness to experience the discomfort of sharing your own story. The third thing: You have to decide with whom you are going to exchange heart stories. The two parts of this desire: I’d like to get to know you and I’d like to give you an invitation to get to know me.Thoughts on what we can learn from the poem “The Invitation”.The art of not helping: why you should just listen with your head and your heart instead of trying to solve problems.Practical advice on talking to another person to know their heart: The downloadable worksheet: ‘Sharing your Story: Discovering, disclosure, openness, and vulnerability’Why you should start by practicing this with friends or family members and work up to people you don’t really know. How to set the tone for an open and vulnerable conversation.Topics to cover in the conversation to help you and the other person open up about your heart stories. How sharing this podcast may help spread the healing. ‘Life is hard. And life is wonderful. “The Invitation” is about finding what we need - the inspiration, the intimacy, the courage and the commitment to live fully, every day.' ~ Oriah Mountain Dreamer. Thank you Oriah Mountain Dreamer and YES, we are living in a time of great challenge AND we are living a time of great change - great possibility. Our world is presenting us with opportunities to be ‘opened by life's betrayals OR to become shriveled and closed from fear of further pain'. These are the words of Oriah Mountain Dreamer in her poem, ‘The Invitation, where she asks powerful, provocative and revelatory questions that allow for the discernment and discovery of - just how vulnerable and open are we to life? How present are we to the pain we feel, ours or another? How responsible are we for what we create in life? Do we allow our existential fears to cause us to shrink back, try and hide, fix or fade the pain? Or, do we meet the joy, the ecstasy, and the beaty of life, even when it is not pretty, filled with gratitude to be alive, embracing the challenges that fuel our evolution and growth? Whew! What would happen if we simply paused, said absolutely nothing, did absolutely nothing and listened? What would happen if you took a moment to be fully present to the sacred path of yourself, and the sacred path of another? What would happen if you were fully present to the thoughts that you are thinking, the emotions you are feeling, and with grace, lightness of being and humor shifted your perspective to what's possible? I'm inviting you to join our Tuck Talk Podcast this week for a contemplation and conversation of ‘The Invitation' by Oriah Mountain Dreamer. Life if filled with beauty and pain. This episode is not one to listen to in your car or on the go. This episode is a full life visioning workshop, just like the workshops I host through zoom and in person, which if you're not signed up for my newsletter, Sunday Shot of Soul, make sure you do that so you never miss those. You can do that at https://forms.gle/xTcAW2vF8JQV4WmV7. So you'll want to set the space, sit down with a pen and a notebook, and have your phone or computer nearby to hit pause. This workshop is around visioning and goal setting. I'm recording this episode on December 14 as we have a New Moon and Solar Eclipse making it a potent time to set intentions not only the next month but the next year. This year has been full of feelings of restrictions and constraint. It's been uncomfortable, but transformative. The invitation today is to venture deep into ourselves so that we can uncover our truth and create a life that is authentic and in alignment with our soul's mission. The themes of this time with both the solar eclipse and the new moon occurring in Sagittarius are freedom, moving beyond restraints; adventure, wandering; and aiming high and dreaming big. This workshop is different from others because instead of using your head, I'm challenging you to drop into your heart to uncover your true desires and focus on qualities and feelings rather than material items. I'm also challenging you to go big. Instead of setting a goal of "being healthier", why not set the goal of being the most vibrant person in the room! The poem I read was The Invitation by Oriah Mountain Dreamer. If you haven't listened to the episodes on following your bliss and manifestation, I highly recommend you go back and check those out to help embody your dream version of yourself. As always, you can find me on Instagram @Paige.oxley and if you need support with cultivating this aligned and authentic life, my 1-1 coaching is open! The Invitation by Oriah Mountain Dreamer—a collection of words that has had its way with me for decades. Sit back. Let yourself be moved.
One of the most common issues my clients come to me for coaching on is their tendency to people-please.On the one hand, we can feel good when we do things for other people. This is pure generosity and kindness. But with people-pleasing, doing things for other people is the MAIN source of joy and often comes at the expense of self-love and self-care. And the intention behind it stems from insecurity and fear. When we people please, we are not being authentic and living our truth. People pleasing leads to doing and saying things because you want to affect or change the way the people think about you. Or because you think their needs are more important than yours. It can come in many forms — avoiding speaking up when someone says/does something racist to avoid their/your discomfort; not advocating for yourself in a partnership because you’re afraid they’ll love you less if you ask for what you need; avoiding being honest about something you don’t like that your partner does in bed...and MUCH more. (**To be clear, these situations are nuanced; I am NOT victim blaming here, or referring to the complex safety issues – experienced more acutely at work and in everyday life by BIPOC – that may necessitate certain strategic forms of carrying oneself. More on this in the pod;)Can you see how people pleasing is also closely related to your level of confidence, to ziji? And to self-love?All this people pleasing is also exhausting, because not being yourself and honoring your truth is fucking exhausting. You spend all day wondering how other people might see you or what they might think. You’re so afraid of disappointing other people, you end up being a version of yourself that isn’t you – not your whole self, anyway. You put someone else’s happiness in front of yours. You prioritize their needs over your own.And you know what?Oftentimes these habits aren’t coming from an authentic place within us – a genuine, purely generous desire to make others happy – whether we realize this or not.Instead, people pleasing comes from wanting to avoid a sense of anxiety or guilt if we say no, or wanting to avoid disappointing someone, or wanting to change how they think about you.And despite our best intentions, sometimes the impact of our people pleasing can turn out to be the very thing we were trying so hard to avoid. So the truth is, when you think you are doing something to make someone else feel better, to feel happier, it’s actually because of how YOU want to feel – or don’t want to feel. When we are doing something because it makes us happy when we do it – and there’s no resentment or expectation that other people will respond to us or think of us in any particular way – that is LOVE. Not people pleasing.Want to become a pro at recognizing the difference between the two? I invite you to dig in.Here are my three challenges to you on your journey to quit people pleasing:Learn about what you love and what you want to do, what you crave and desire.Recognize your thoughts and which ones come up when you feel like lying or doing something you don’t want to do.Prioritize cultivating self-love, self-compassion, and an awareness of your inherent lovability and worth. And be willing to disappoint someone to stay true to yourself.I invite you to do this NOW.To begin, you’ve got to give yourself permission to be raw and wild and authentic...and brave.Because you know what? You already deserve every drop of juice available in this one wild and precious life.In This Episode You’ll Learn:How to stop putting other people's needs and happiness in front of yours and start prioritizing your ownWhy a big part of confidence and self love is being willing to be uncomfortable – and being willing to disappoint other peopleHow to start doing the work to see your worthiness in YOURSELFWhy there is such a strong association between people pleasing and being defined as a ‘nice’ or ‘good’ person – how to get past your own perceptionHow to stop conflating people pleasing with loveWhy what you are doing to make someone else feel happier is actually because of how YOU want to feel – or don’t want to feel. How to stop inadvertently rejecting yourself and change your thought patternsWhy the more we try to please others, the more we need others’ approval and depend on external validationTools to start honoring your truth, knowing what you want and stop deferring your needs Once. Today's Writing into the Day podcast will be featuring a poem by Oriah Mountain Dreamer, “The Invitation.” Have your pen or pencil out and be ready to write! As I read this poem, I want you to think about what your passions are, what you long to do, what makes you feel alive. Think about fear from doing something and whether you have embraced that fear or let it control your actions. Think about how you make your impact on the world and what legacies you plan to leave behind in your wake. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/writingintotheday/support

Super Soul Sunday! Today I read a quote from Sally Kempton on Loneliness and read the stunningly gorgeous and timely poem The Invitation by Oriah Mountain Dreamer. I read it years ago but it has never meant more than it means to me right now when we're co-creating a new paradigm through which we see each other and connect. And of course, our daily koshas sit where we commit to the power of awareness and recognizing our wholeness. May it be of benefit! --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/stoopsits/support

In July 2018, during a girls weekend in Niagara Falls, I was introduced to the Invitation and read it allowed. Time stood still and there was a shift. This is a reading of the poem called the Invitation by Oriah Mountain Dreamer.
Whenever people talk about intimacy, their minds tend to drift automatically towards the sexual kind. However, there is so much more to intimacy than just the physical aspects — and the fact that so many people seem unaware of it means that now more than ever, it’s important to talk about it. After all, it is only through openness and being willing to listen that we achieve true intimacy, whether it’s with our acquaintances, our friends, our family, our significant others, and even ourselves. And so, before learning about how to handle and facilitate intimacy within our relationships, we must first understand what it is and what it requires. Today, I share my thoughts on intimacy, focusing specifically on the need to be open and ready to listen with empathy in order to make it possible. I discuss the importance of being intimate with yourself, and how that opens the gateway to being intimate with the people you value most in your life. I share my personal experiences and stories regarding various kinds of intimacy over the years such as with clients, a colleague I hadn’t spoken to for a while, my family, and even with my pet. I also share the crucial aspects of intimacy and listening with empathy, and why intimacy requires a certain level of courageousness before it can happen. “That is what fuels intimacy: An open heart of compassion, of empathy, of being moved by the world and by each other.” - Pripo Teplitsky This week on Relationships! Let’s Talk About It: Intimacy with others and with yourself. The importance of being genuine before you can be intimate with yourself. My recent interesting encounter with an old corporate colleague. The people I meet during the course of my professional career, and how intimacy plays a role in those encounters. Creating intimacy with your family, and its role in helping you be at peace. The difference between physical intimacy and emotional intimacy. How intimacy leads to our liberation. My experience at a memorable and unique workshop experience with my cousin. Taking risks to be intimate with others. Embracing self-compassion and self-appreciation. How my emotional bond with my father was forged through physical intimacy from a very young age and how it established the foundation for my perspective on intimacy today. Our tendency to be passive listeners to our partners and how it becomes a barrier to intimacy. The two crucial ingredients of listening with empathy. Intimacy with animals and the feeling of connecting with another species. The impact of being open to having an open heart and being vulnerable and present with your partner. How the poem, The Invitation, helps couples who are unsure about the level of intimacy they desire. Resources Mentioned: Creating Extraordinary Intimacy in a Shutdown World - Michael J. It doesn't interest me if the story you are telling me is true. I want to know if you can disappoint another to be true to yourself, If you can bear the accusation of betrayal and not betray your own soul. I want to know if you can be faithless and therefore be trustworthy. I want to know if you can see beauty Even when it is not pretty every day, And if you can source your own life From its presence. I want to know if you can live with failure, Yours and mine, And still stand on the edge of a lake and shout to the silver of the full moon, "Yes!" It doesn't interest me to know where you live or how much money you have. I want to know if you can get up after the night of grief and despair, Weary and bruised to the bone, And do what needs to be done for the children. It doesn't interest me who you are, how you came to be here. I want to know if you will stand In the center of the fire with me And not shrink back. It doesn't interest me where or what or with whom you have studied. I want to know what sustains you From the inside When all else falls away. I want to know if you can be alone With yourself, And if you truly like the company you keep In the empty moments. Sheila and Maria have an invitation for you - the invitation to bravely cultivate your practice of vulnerability in life and in parenthood. In the midst of the many struggles we face as individuals, within our communities, and as humans, the act of boldly allowing yourself to be visible is a powerful tool for building and maintaining connection. "...I want to know if you can be alone with yourself and if you truly like the company you keep in the empty moments." - Oriah Mountain Dreamer, "The Invitation" In this episode, Maria and Sheila practice their own vulnerability. By sharing their own stories, they demonstrate how conscious vulnerability has a positive impact on our family systems and communities. Showing our true selves, allows us to feel seen and be seen, and as parents, consistently practicing vulnerability allows us to cultivate strong family relationships built on honesty, trust, and respect. It is this type of foundation that our children need in order to go out into the world confident in who they are, bold enough to be themselves, and brave enough to stand for what they believe in. Read, be inspired and inspire with your book. Today I was going to start some business planning using the Business Model Canvas. But... I was still tired and catching up after a week of daily visits (up and down the mountain) to see my sick doggy, Marley. I picked up a book called The Call by Oriah Mountain Dreamer. Casually I opened it and found myself at chapter six and the message made me stop. No longer did I just need to do this plan or should so it. The call was to be. So I be'd. Your book could have the same effect on someone. They may read some of it and feel called to do something, even if that something is nothing, nada, zilch. Books are healing. I feel better for watching a film and walking the dogs. When you feel called to write a book, give me a call... or if you are not ready please consider this 7 day plan your book challenge. At the end of 7 days you will know if writing a book is for you. http://rcl.ink/Rt8 #writeyourbook #writeabook #writing #reading

At a recent sitting, Michael offered up a poem from Oriah Mountain Dreamer's book, The Invitation. This is the podcast of that evening. Several subjects were broached including how practice can get heavy the further along the Path we get, as well as how we might best deal spiritually with faltering economic situations. Rather than go to war with our situations, Michael suggests we allow life to tenderize us and then to live consciously from that softened space. As odd as this may sound to the ego, it is a shortcut to realization.
