Today's guest, JD Tremblay, discovered that his body was able to sustain the trials of an Ironman (without any effects) when he did his first race, with no training, to check it off the bucket list. This led JD to push the boundaries to see where he would hit the wall. After competing in two 515 races he jumped at an opportunity to do the Epic5 ten-year-anniversary race – EPIC DECA , where he was the third and final finisher of the event.Today JD is working on giving back to the tri community with a race for youth in Mexico. Check out the GoFundMe he has to support this cause which he speaks about in this episode. Support kids in pursuing their athletic dreams! https://gofund.me/b56ac89cJD also speaks about his book Hunger for More in Life, soon to be published at Amazon, which he wrote to share his story and some training tips.
Conquering a historic feat of stratospheric proportions nobody thought possible, today's guests will challenge every assumption you ever harbored about the outer limits of human capability. In 2010, Jason Lester and I were the first to complete EPIC5—5 consecutive iron-distance triathlons on 5 Hawaiian Islands in just over 6 days.I'm proud of that accomplishment. More proud that it has inspired others to rewrite their rulebook on personal possibility. But today's guests James Lawerence—aka The Iron Cowboy—alongside his wife and co-captain Sunny Jo Lawrence, somehow makes my resume just sound…cute. In 2015, the father of five did something I was convinced was impossible when he completed 50 iron-distance triathlons in 50 states in 50 days—a stunning feat chronicled way back on episodes 149 & 166, in the documentary The Iron Cowboy: The Story of The 50.50.50, and in his book, Redefine Impossible. But as many of you already know, James recently topped that seemingly untoppable feat by completing truly one of the most astonishing achievements in the history of voluntary human endurance—101 iron-distance triathlons in 101 consecutive days.In case you don't quite grasp the enormity of this truly epic feat, let me spell it out. Beginning in March of this year, James climbed out of bed, swam 2.4 miles, jumped on his bike and rode 112 miles, then completed 26.2 miles on foot, repeating this routine every day without missing a single day, for 101 days in a row. That's 14,200 self-powered miles!Today James and Sunny tell the tale in a warts-and-all conversation that is not to be missed. In addition to breaking down the enormity of this feat—a team and family endeavor in every respect—James and Sunny drop a full-fledged masterclass on mental toughness. Where it comes from, how to strengthen it, and how to ignite the power we all possess to endure the unimaginable. We also discuss the critical role that leadership, family, teamwork, community building, and service play in accomplishing audacious goals and how presence and mindfulness hold the key to unlocking the impossible. This is a powerful conversation that just might forever change your perspective on human potential broadly, and personal possibility specifically. To read more click here. You can also watch listen to our exchange on YouTube.I have tremendous respect for these two. I love them dearly. And I'm proud to share this candid, behind-the scenes excavation of one of the most mind-bending experiences I've ever been privileged to witness.Enjoy!Peace + Plants, See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Episode Summary:Welcome to the first episode! I am starting it off with a bang. I completed a lengthy interview with Ultraman race announcer Steve King. So lengthy, that I decided to split it into three parts. In this episode Steve shares stories of the life changing events he attended during his athletic career as a race walker, triathlete and endurance runner. You will also be introduced to upcoming Ultraman Canada 2021 participant Chad Bentley. Chad is a well-respected plant-based endurance athlete. He is a marathoner, Ultra-marathoner, multi-time Ironman finisher, 2-time Ultraman finisher, 2-time Ultra 520 finisher, and the first Canadian to compete in the EPIC 5 Challenge. In this episode of The Plant Trainers Podcast, we talk with Rich Roll and Julie Piatt. They are the co-authors of The Plantpower Way: Whole Food Plant-based Recipes and Guidance For The Whole Family. We talk about the tools for making families healthier and how to keep that deep connection with your partner and family through the toughest moments in your life. We wanted to bring up an oldie and a goody. Why are we doing that? Well, in the summers we need a little downtime, for those of you who have only joined us in the last few years, you may not have gotten to these yet and for those of you who have, we know you will walk away with added knowledge and inspiration you may have missed the last time. So enjoy, and we will be back very soon with fresh new content. In the meantime, be active and stay safe and come join the conversation @plantrainers on Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, and Twitter. Rich is a graduate from Stanford University and Cornell Law School and became an entertainment lawyer. He realized that his life was not going in the direction he wanted it to both professionally and health-wise and so he made some major changes. He soon became a well known plant-based ultra-endurance athlete competing in Ultraman 2008 & 2009, EPIC5 (5 Ironman triathlons on the 5 Islands of Hawaii) in 2010, and in 2009 he was named one of the top 25 fittest men in Men’s Fitness Magazine. Rich is now a plant-based advocate and motivational speaker. His best-selling book, Finding Ultra: Rejecting Middle Age, Becoming One of the World’s Fittest Men, and Discovering Myself was a great inspiration for Adam. He continues to inspire Adam and others through The Rich Roll Podcast which has been on the iTunes top 10 list for a long time. Julie Piatt was born in Alaska eating wild game her father brought home for her family and later started a career in fashion design. Through the years she has left that behind and has become plant-based and concentrates on her connection with the physical world and spiritual world. Julie is a wonderful musician and plays in a band with her sons. She is a real yogi and has created the Jai Seed cookbook and Jai Release Meditation program which Shoshana still uses from time to time. She has great artistic talent in many mediums, which can be seen in the beautiful pages of their book. Together Rich and Julie are leading the charge in the Plantpower Revolution. In this episode we discuss: The journey of writing a book The role the children played in the making of their book Diet v.s. lifestyle Plant-based is easy Helping your children with lifestyle change Children’s responsibility Love & relationships
This is a special episode because, instead of looking forward, we actually take a look back and shine the light on the heart of a true hero, Rich Roll. Rich and I both abandoned our steady and stable “normal” careers about 10 years ago to release books and venture into uncharted career territories that didn’t even really exist at the time. We both had young families and, let me tell you, it was scary. BUT, when you believe in something so much and when you’re being pulled so strongly into a direction that resonates with your whole being, you have to act...and fortunately, we both did. This interview was recorded last Fall so, while you won’t hear any dialogue around the current issues we’re all facing, you will hear a thoughtful conversation on fear, vulnerability, suffering, epiphanies in life, learning to give and receive love, meditation, and the bravery it takes to shed our old skin and start over. So even though we look back this week, as you’re listening to both of us reminisce, ask yourself: Are there changes in my own life that I want to make? Is there a cause I believe in so much that I’m willing to give up virtually everything? What are my own fears that might be prohibiting me from going after these goals? How can I get out of my comfort zone? I hope that you, like Rich and myself, recognize and act on those unique moments in your life - those epiphanies - that can ultimately alter the course of your life for the better. “The only limits to human capability are those we impose on ourselves.”Mel UrieOver the last few months, I've had the privilege of hosting conversations with an impressive litany of powerhouse women breaking paradigms across a wide swath of disciplines.Mel Urie has more than earned her spot amongst these powerful boundary crushers. And I for one am here to celebrate her.Devoted listeners will recall Mel’s first appearance on the show (along with fellow endurance fiend Danielle Grabol) a little over a year ago (RRP 421) wherein these two badass athletes discussed becoming the first two females to ever complete EPIC5 — a race I helped pioneer that involves completing 5 Ironmans on the 5 Hawaiian Islands in just 5 days. But then Mel had to go and just completely outdo herself (and embarrass the rest of us) by becoming the first female to not only attempt but to actually complete the fatally absurd ultra-endurance fever dream known as Uberman -- a 556-mile self-supported freak fest Outside magazine dubbed “The World’s Hardest Endurance Race”.Kicking off with a brutal 21-mile swim from the island of Catalina to the Southern California mainland -- a feat most swimmers can only dream of accomplishing -- athletes then endure a 2-day, 400-mile bike ride from Los Angeles to the edge of a barren desert, climbing 20,000-feet before descending into Badwater Basin, the hottest and lowest point in North America.Ready to kick up your feet and crack a cold one? Not so fast. The celebration comes only after lacing up the running shoes and facing down the Badwater 135 course. Considered the world's most difficult footrace, it entails a quick 135-mile run across Death Valley and up a good portion of Mt. Whitney.Mel didn’t just survive this endeavor. She absolutely crushed it, completing the course in stunning fashion under 136 hours. This is a conversation about Uberman of course — why Mel wanted it, what happened and what she learned doing it.But more than anything, this is a master class on mental toughness. It’s about putting limiting beliefs in the grave. And it’s about what it means to live a 'No Excuse' life. This conversation isn’t just for women. And it’s not just for athletes or those interested in exploring the world of mind-bending endurance sports. This one is for anyone and everyone looking to break the glass ceiling on human potential. The visually inclined can watch it all go down on YouTube. And as always, the audio version streams wild and free on Apple Podcasts and Spotify. This stubbornly courageous woman deserves far more credit for her accomplishments than the media has delivered to date. I feel an obligation to change that.May her testimony leave you inspired to finally put your excuses in the rearview. Because the time is now to create the aspirational life you deserve.Peace + Plants,Listen, Watch & SubscribeApple Podcasts | YouTube | Spotify | Stitcher | Google PodcastsThanks to this week’s sponsorsOuterknown: Founded by pro-surfer Kelly Slater, Outerknown creates high quality, sustainably produced, and great looking men’s and women’s clothes, ethically manufactured in the world’s cleanest solar-powered factory. This week the conversation is a bit different than the usual sit down I have with guests. This week I’ve brought back Chris Fagan so that we could do a deep dive into a topic. Chris, as long-time listeners likely know, is the author of The Expedition which chronicles her adventures when she and her husband walked to the South Pole. Chris and I chatted about that adventure in Episode 88 and, in December, she returned to ask ME questions about my Epic5 runs in Episode 110. Today’s conversation basically spun out of that most recent episode. We had a great chat but realized there were so many other topics we could explore together that we decided to do a Deep Dive. So today you’re going to hear us chatting about how we make decisions when it comes to choosing a challenge, an adventure, a goal, an expedition, whatever you might call it. We talk about the criteria we use to get to that decision and we wander into some other topics as well but all with this central focus of pursuing goals. Now the plan is for Chris and I to get together every so often, perhaps every six weeks or so, and do a deep dive into a topic. If there’s something that you’d like to know more about, here’s a great opportunity. You can send me an email at beth@shesboldpodcast.com and let me know what it is you’d like to hear more about and this doesn’t have to be just about big adventures. We all have our own Everests, we all have our own hurdles. What's yours? Topics we’ll likely cover include dealing with fear, who our mentors are and who inspires us, staying healthy, keeping mental focus, training plans. What would resonate with you? What do you want to know more about? Don’t be shy. Let us know! beth@shesboldpodcast.com With that, please enjoy this conversation with Chris Fagan. ***** Support the podcast through Patreon and get access to special audio and written content, be part of a private Facebook group and enjoy other benefits reserved for supporters of the podcast! ***** Have a burning question and want to be featured on a future episode? Today's conversation is a bit unusual and hopefully you'll be as inspired as always. Today I’m the guest and Chris Fagan, whom you might recall from Episode 88 of the She's Bold Podcast, asks ME the questions. This is all about my Epic5 run in Hawaii! As a reminder, Chris and her husband walked 560 miles over 48 days to the South Pole, pulling sleds with all of their gear that weighed about 200 pounds. Yeah, super inspirational. If you’re new to the show, be sure to go back and listen to that episode. Chris suggested that we sit down and talk through my recent experience running Epic5. As an experienced ultra-runner herself, she had some great questions. We were able to talk through my preparation for running five 50Ks in 5 days on 5 Hawaiian islands, as well as the actual experience and then my recovery. You’ll also hear a question that was asked by Dana, one of my Patreon supporters. Getting to ask questions of guests is just one benefit you’ll get as a supporter of the show. For just $5 month you’ll also be added to our private Facebook group, and have access to bonus content that is usually in the form of a question that I ask the guest after we’ve finished recording the main part of the show. I hope you’re feeling generous right as I’d love have you more involved with She’s Bold community :-) Check out shesboldpodcast.com/patreon for details. Before I get to our conversation, I do want to give a huge shout out to the Epic5 race directors, Rebecca Morgan and Chris Brennan and our photographer, Colin Cross. These folks did an amazing job at supporting our small group of runners. I can’t thank them enough for making this event happen, given our small but mighty numbers. And thanks to Peter Jurt for running Epic5 for the 2nd year in a row. As I told him, given that he knew what he was about to get into, I was even more impressed that he showed up. The folks at Epic5 are best known for their triathlon races – where participants complete 5 triathlons in 5 days on 5 Hawaiian islands. And next year they are doing 10 triathlons in 10 days. So throughout my runs, I knew it would be nothing compared to what the participants in that event would be taking on. If you’re a runner and want to challenge yourself, I highly recommend the Epic5 run. It was truly a fantastic experience for me. And while there were just 3 of us running it this year, it’s limited to 12 so it’ll always be an intimate group of people that you’ll get to know well during the experience. You can see more about them at epic5.com. With that, please enjoy this conversation with me about Epic5! ***** Have a burning question and want to be featured on a future episode? “You are never going to be the same person you were yesterday because there’s always something you learned in that workout about yourself, your fitness, your mind, and your nutrition. That’s the training process.”Chris HauthMaking his latest appearance in our ongoing Coach’s Corner series is none other than Chris Hauth, one of the world’s most respected endurance and ultra-endurance coaches.A sub-9 hour Ironman, Chris (@AIMPCoach) is a former professional triathlete, Age Group Ironman World Champion, and 2-time Olympic Swimmer. In 2006, Chris won the Ironman Coeur D’Alene and went on to be the first American amateur & 4th overall American at the Ironman World Championships in Kona, Hawaii. When he’s not training and racing, Chris hosts the Weekly Word Podcast and runs AIMP Coaching, mentoring a wide spectrum of athletes ranging from elite professionals — including Ironman and Western States top finishers, Ultraman winners and Olympic Trials qualifiers — to first time half-marathoners.Whether you are an elite athlete or just starting out, Chris knows how to get the best out of athletes the right way. A long-time friend and mentor as much as a coach, I have been under Chris’ tutelage since 2008, during which time he deftly guided me through three Ultraman World Championships (’08, ’09 & ’11), EPIC5 in 2010 and the Ötillö Swimrun World Championships in 2017, an event we raced together as a team.I could have never achieved the level of athletic success I have enjoyed without Chris’ deft counsel, so it is with pleasure that I share more of his wisdom with you today. As we put the cold winter months behind us, today's conversation focuses on balancing your fitness goals against life's demands as we welcome warmer days. As always, Chris drops knowledge applicable whether you are a professional athlete or a cubicle warrior just looking to improve the quality of your day to day. Specific topics discussed include:* optimizing fitness as we transition from winter to spring;* scheduling training in balance with real-life pressures and expectations;* when to hold back & how to avoid doing too much;* experimenting with race nutrition during training;* tips to develop the nuances of swimming technique; and* finding joy in the training processDK Goals! “Everybody wants the finish line. Everybody wants a medal. But people don’t want to put the work in.”Danielle GrabolIn 2010, the tireless and intrepid Jason Lester hoodwinked me into his latest fit of voluntary suffering insanity: an attempt to complete 5 Ironman-distance triathlons on 5 Hawaiian Islands in under 5 days. Hence was born the EPIC5 Challenge — and somehow we survived to tell the tale. Now institutionalized, EPIC5 annually attracts a global handful of athletes adequately unhinged to retrace our steps. Over the last 8 years, 29 individuals have successfully completed the challenge. Three of these intrepid humans are women. Two of them are here today.Meet real-life Wonder Women Danielle Grabol & Melissa Urie – both athletes thriving on the cutting edge of ultra-endurance.But it wasn't always that way.Pushing 225 pounds, 15 years ago Dani was a junk food junkie and a pack-a-day smoker who couldn't even climb a flight of stairs without losing her breath (sounds familiar!). In 2005, her doctor told her that if she didn’t change her ways she’d be dead before she turned 40.So she hit the gym. It was hardly overnight, but ultimately Dani reinvented herself wholesale. Down 70 pounds, an athlete was born. But on a training ride a year later, Dani was struck by a drunk driver. Her injuries were so severe she was told she would never run or bike again. Instead, she went on to compete in multiple Ironmans and even a double-Ironman. In 2013 she was one-half of the youngest two-person female team to finish RAAM — the legendary bike race across the entire United States. And in 2016, Dani became the very first female to compete in and finish EPIC5 — a stereotype shattering story she lays bare in her beautiful memoir, Fear No Distance*.A mental health nurse from Melbourne, Australia, Mel grew up active but never competitive. But in 1998, in an effort to lose a bit of weight and get fit, she participated in the Great Victorian Bike Ride with her dad. Thus was sparked a passion for ultra-endurance. Over the years, Mel has completed 6 Ironmans and a few double ironman distances races, including Ultraman Canada and Ultraman Australia*. Like Dani, she discovered EPIC5 by way of Finding Ultra, signed up and in 2017, Mel became the second female to ever complete the challenge. The bottom line? Mel and Dani are two badass women who know how to get it done. And this conversation is about just that. It's about putting in the work. It's about patience. Determination and grit. Not being afraid to fail. It's about the mindset required to break stereotypes. And it's about the mental toughness demanded to compete at the highest level in an arena dominated by men.So check your excuses at the door and enjoy! To view our conversation on YouTube, visit bit.ly/danielleandmel421. And don't forget we're also now on Spotify here: bit.ly/rrpspotifyPeace + Plants,*I recorded this interview way back in mid-November. At the time, Mel was preparing for the Ultraman World Championships in Hawaii. Unfortunately she did not finish that race. Ladies! Join us on the Be Bold Facebook group! In this episode, I talk about my most recent experience running a marathon (the Jack and Jill Downhill) near Seattle. It was my best time running a marathon thus far, it qualified me for the Boston Marathon (again) and I did so having just come off a bit of an injury that I thought was going to sideline me from running in the race at all! ______ I’d love to hear your feedback! “An athlete is a mindset. It's how you prepare, think and execute. Not because of some elite status or physical stature. Anybody can be an athlete.”Chris HauthToday I am once again joined by 2-time Olympian Chris Hauth for another edition of Coach’s Corner – a spin on my typical podcast format where I go deep and get granular on the physical, mental and emotional aspects of high performance for both sport and life.A sub-9 hour Ironman, Chris (@AIMPCoach) is an Age Group Ironman World Champion, a former 2-time Olympic Swimmer, and one of the world’s most respected endurance coaches. This is a conversation and audience Q&A that explores what it means to adopt the athlete mindset. It's about the differences between intentional training versus simply exercising. And it's about the key practices that — when performed consistently — most influence success in both sport and life. But most of all, this is a discourse about why anyone can be an athlete — a state of mind and action that has nothing to with elite status or genetic gifts and everything to do with your relationship with yourself and how you navigate the world at large.I sincerely hope you enjoy the exchange. For the visually inclined, you can watch our entire conversation on YouTube here: bit.ly/coachscorner377Peace + Plants,Listen, Watch & SubscribeApple Podcasts | YouTube | Soundcloud | Stitcher | GooglePlayThanks to this week’s sponsorsDesignCrowd: Custom graphic, logo and web design from over 550, See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
5 Ironman Distance Triathlons on 5 different Hawaiian Islands in 5 consecutive days...that is the Epic5. Melissa walks us through the relatively unknown world of Ultra Distance Triathlons and it is nuts. This athlete is as stubborn and tuff as you will find, a fascinating walk through this crazy world.
“Stay healthy, stay motivated and be positive.”Chris Hauth Today, I am once again joined by Chris Hauth (@AIMPCoach) for another edition of Coach’s Corner focused on maintaining fitness with engaged enthusiasm as we navigate the winter months. For those new to the show, Chris is a sub-9 hour Ironman, former professional triathlete, two-time Olympian and one of the world’s most respected endurance coaches. In 2006, Chris won the Ironman Coeur D’Alene and went on to be the first American amateur & 4th overall American at the Ironman World Championships in Kona, Hawaii. When he’s not training and racing, Chris runs AIMP Coaching, mentoring a wide spectrum of athletes ranging from elite professionals — including Ironman and Western States top finishers, Ultraman winners and Olympic Trials qualifiers — to first time half-marathoners. Under Chris’ tutelage since 2008, he deftly guided me through three Ultraman World Championships,EPIC5. and now Ötillö.A friend and mentor as much as a coach, Chris has been my personal coach since 2008, expertly guiding me through three Ultraman World Championships (’08, ’09 & ’11), EPIC5 in 2010 and the 2017 Ötillö Swimrun World Championships in Sweden this past September – which we raced together as a team.Today we discuss:* The importance of rest & taking a break from training;* eating and training with the season;* how to set goals and formulate a plan for the new year;* work-life-training balance;* sustainability — learning how to enjoy your fitness; and* bucket list events and what each of us is looking forward to in 2018On another note, I am looking to hire a filmmaker/photographer. As you may know, David Zammit joined me 2 months ago as my collaborative partner on video and photography projects. During this time, we made a fruitful leap to filming the podcast and created a few other cool pieces (with more on the way). Ultimately, the job turned out to not be the right fit for David, who returned home to Malta. For the record, I loved working with him. We're good friends and he may return to Los Angeles at some point. However, his departure has left me back at square one. Therefore, I am once again putting the word out for a filmmaking / editing / photographer comrade in arms. I will be revisiting all of the previous submissions of course, but I thought it worth putting out another call. Here is what I am looking for:* availability to work full time (or most of the time) and in person (no virtual arrangements);* extensive editing experience in either FCP or Premiere;* experience with graphic design & After Effects* extensive camera experience (owning great equipment a plus);* can multi-task as a filmmaker, editor and photographer* alignment with my mission & fundamental understanding of the opportunityThe job is evenly divided between documentation (e.g., podcast & instructional projects) and art (e.g., vlogs, motivational pieces, etc.). In addition, I am not looking for someone to simply do as I ask, but rather an individual who understands and appreciates aesthetics and collaboration, can bring me new ideas, and ultimately elevate my visual presence across multiple channels.I understand this is a big ask. It will take a very specific person to fill this role, so please only submit if you meet all the qualifications. But if you think you have the goods and appreciate the value of the opportunity, I would love to hear from you.E-mail submissions to info@richroll.com with the subject line: “Video Opportunity”For those visually inclined, See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Neuveriteľne pravdivý príbeh transformácie obyčajného človeka do jedného z najlepších vytrvalostných športovcov sveta.
Every once in a while the planets and stars are aligned and I get the chance to meet up with one of the really big and interesting international names. When Rich Roll together with his friend and coach Chris Hauth decided to take on ÖTILLÖ Swimrun World Championship I got the chance to sit down with Rich for a long talk at the acast studio. Rich Roll is often described as a plant based ultra endurance athlete, meaning he is on a strictly vegan diet and that he has competed in challenges such as the Ultraman Triathlon and also feats like the Epic5 that he completed back in 2010. Rich Roll is also the author of the books Finding Ultra and The Plantpower Way - both best sellers with Finding Ultra reaching #1. He originally popped up on my radar a couple of years ago since he also hosts the immensly popular Rich Roll Podcast that more or less subscribes to a top-10 position on iTunes. Just like myself Rich started his podcast almost five years ago. Rich Roll competed as a butterfly swimmer in Stanford University but in his late twenties he ended up in severe alcohol and drug addiction leading to a decision at the age of 31 to spend one hundred days in rehab to start a new chapter of his life. “This is our day. Now let's make the best of it versus comparing ourselves to others or our expectations.”Chris HauthToday I am joined by my friend, coach and teammate Chris Hauth for a special edition of Coach’s Corner – a spin on my typical podcast format — to recap our breathtaking, once-in-a-lifetime adventure competing in the Ötillö Swimrun World Championships in Sweden.A sub-9 hour Ironman, Chris (@AIMPCoach) is a former professional triathlete, two-time Olympic Swimmer and one of the world’s most respected endurance coaches. Under Chris’ tutelage since 2008, he deftly guided me through three Ultraman World Championships,EPIC5. and now Ötillö.This past Monday, Chris and I joined 300 athletes from 24 countries to race Ötillö as a two-man team, traversing 26 islands spread across the outer-reaches of the Swedish archipelago on foot and by sea. All told, 40 miles of running and 6 miles of swimming. It was a truly extraordinary experience. Punishing. Humbling. Brutal, beautiful and beyond extreme.Along the way we met gale force winds. Sideways rain. Bone-chilling Baltic waters. And six-foot swells. We were on our hands and knees, scaling vertical granite slippery as ice. We trudged through bogs in knee-deep mud. Loose rocks left us flat on our backs. We bushwhacked terrain so difficult, so impossibly technical, it all feels now like an impossible dream.Today we share the incredible story.I sincerely hope you enjoy the exchange.Peace + Plants,P.S. – For more on the adventure, please read Adam Skolnick's piece for the New York Times, A Brutal Competition, Island to Island, in Sweden. “The prize never goes to the fastest guy; it goes to the guy who slows down the least.”Chris HauthThis week marks the highly anticipated return of Chris Hauth to the podcast.A sub-9 hour Ironman, Chris (@AIMPCoach) is the current Age Group Ironman World Champion, a former Olympic Swimmer and one of the world's most respected endurance coaches. In 2006, Chris won the Ironman Coeur D’Alene and went on to be the first American amateur & 4th overall American at the Ironman World Championships in Kona, Hawaii. When he's not training and racing, Chris expertly coaches a wide spectrum of amateur and elite professional athletes across a variety of disciplines, including Ironman and Western States top finishers, Ultraman winners and myriad swimmers towards age group nationals and Olympic Trials. My relationship with Chris began in 2008. A coach/athlete mentorship turned friendship that profoundly and forever altered the trajectory of my life. Brilliantly guiding me through three Ultraman World Championships ('08, '09 & '11) as well as EPIC5 in 2010, my debt of gratitude for Chris' tutelage cannot be overstated. Simply put, I could have never achieved the level of athletic success I have enjoyed without his deft counsel, which has been instrumental in maximizing my potential as an athlete and bettering me as a human being.Today I am pleased to share his wisdom with you. This is a general conversation about Chris' evolving philosophy on training, racing and life. It's also a granular and technical masterclass on optimal training protocols, the common mistakes most athletes make, the approach and mindset required to break the glass ceiling on potential, and how to effectively balance performance goals against general health and well-being.But at it's core, this is a conversation about multi-sport as a crucible for self-awareness and growth.Endurance sports as metaphor for life. We cover a lot of ground in this conversation, including:* Chris’ training & racing philosophy* aerobic vs. anaerobic training* the benefits of calculated progression* pros & cons of external monitors/trackers* race plan execution* prioritizing core strength* strategies for optimizing recovery * the facts on fad dieting and fitness nutrition* striking the proper balance between performance & general health* overcoming adversity through mental & physical fitness, and* the imperative of fitness for lifeI have an inkling this episode will leave you wanting to hear more about Chris' story and philosophy. Full Transcript & Video Version Here: http://180nutrition.com.au/180-tv/rich-roll-interview/ Hey, this is Guy Lawrence with 180 Nutrition, and welcome to another episode of the Health Sessions, where of course we're cutting through the confusion by connecting with leading global health and wellness experts, to share the best in latest science and thinking, and empowering everyone that we possibly can to turn their health and lives around. This week, our fantastic guest is Mr. Rich Roll. Now, if you're not familiar with Rich, he is a [sheer guy 00:00:31], full of inspiration, I can assure you. He became a number one best selling author, I think back in 2012, with his book Finding Ultra. He's got a whole amazing story prior to that as well, of transformation, that we get into, into the podcast today. He's got a hit podcast called the Rich Roll Podcast, which is always seen the top of the charts here in Australia, and he's doing amazing things in the USA with the podcast as well, so we're highly recommending you'll check that out after listening to this, no doubt. He's well known for doing what was called the Epic 5 challenge. Basically, it's completing five Ironman distance triathlons on five islands of Hawaii in under a week. I think he did that. He said two years prior to that he didn't even ride a bike, so it's a true transformational story. It's amazing what Rich has gone on and achieved. He's become a phenomenal athlete, and a plant-based athlete at well. He's also been featured in, let me think now, CNN, Los Angeles Times, Sunday Magazine, the Huffington Post, Stanford Magazine, Men's Health Living, to name a few. He's done whole retreats as well, all around the world, and he's just doing great things. It was great to actually sit down with Rich for what was it, 45 minutes, an hour today, and pick his brains and discuss all these amazing topics. We'll get over to that. I just want to read out a iTunes review that came in recently, because I actually thought it was fantastic advice as well. That was by Penny of PB Lifestyles. Penny, I even checked out your website, mate. You're doing fantastic things, traveling around the world, inspiring others to live a healthy lifestyle. Well done, mate. Keep it up. It basically says, "Guy and Stu, thanks so much for helping to make this world a better place. I love that you're not like some of the wellness communities are, and I love the variety of guests you've interviewed. I'm trying to take just one actionable item away from each podcast." So are we, Penny, so are we. "I think if everyone did that, worked on one take away from each episode, then they would help to not only make themselves healthier, but more present individuals, but contribute to a more peaceful world." We believe the same thing, and reviews like that really give us a kick and inspire us to keep searching the globe for the best possible people we can have on this podcast, and share it with everyone, so much appreciated. Guys, if you do get the chance to leave a review, please do. It takes two minutes on iTunes, and helps us spread these podcasts, which of course are free for everyone, across and get us found globally, which is the grand plan, and we're slowly getting there. Any feedback too, is greatly appreciated. Anyway, let's go over to Rich Roll. Enjoy. Hi, this is Guy Lawrence. I'm joined with Stuart Cooke, as always. Hey, Stuart. Stu Hello, mate. Guy Good to see you, mate. Our awesome guest today is Rich Roll. Rich, welcome to the podcast. Rich Great to be here, guys. Really excited to talk to you today. Thanks for having me. Guy Oh look, it's truly appreciated, honestly. We kick off the show, I seem to be asking the same question every show lately, which is a good way to start. If a complete stranger stopped you on the street, Rich, and then said, "What do you do for a living, mate?" How would you answer that? Rich I always struggle with this question. I never know quite how to answer it, but I guess the best answer is to say that I'm an athlete, I'm an author, I'm a wellness advocate. I do lots of different things. I host a podcast, I write books, I blog, I vlog. Kind of omnipresent on the internet, but basically all pivoting around trying to help people unlock their best selves, and doing that through fitness, nutrition, and meditation and other areas of self-improvement. Guy You're not the only one that struggles with that question either, mate. It seems to be the guests we're having on the show lately. Look, I've got a sneaking suspicion we're going to be exposing you to a lot of new listeners on our show, and the one thing we love doing is delving into the background a little bit of the history of Rich Roll. I've been certainly looking into you a lot more this week, mate, and you've been on a fascinating journey. It's quite incredible. I was wondering, would you mind taking us back a bit and touching on what you used to do, to yeah, the changes you've been making, and the epiphanies along the way, I guess? Today were back with Ultraman competitor and EPIC5 finisher Christian Isakson for Part 2 of our conversation. Thanks for all the great comments and feedback I received on social media this week in response to Part 1. If you haven’t listened to that one yet dial it up first before tuning in herePart 2 just gets better. We delve into Christian's racing. He walks us through his first-hand experience completing EPIC5 and what it took to put his imprimatur on last year's Ultraman World Championships. Then we turn to service. Christian's commitment to giving back through his involvement with Chris Lieto's non-profit More Than Sport and and his recent work in Kenya with Ameena Project. And how faith, family and humility are keystones to remain grounded, focused and on point. The message is this — if you want your life to have true meaning, satisfaction, fulfillment and a legacy of value, giving back in a meaningful way is essential. If you are feeling adrift, Christian's message will help right your ship. If he has inspired you to seek out a more fulfilling path for yourself but you're just not sure how to embark on your own version of his story, then — as mentioned in the introduction to this episode — you might be encouraged by my new online course on MindBodyGreen.com entitled The Art of Living With Purpose- 2+ hours of streaming video content with an array of downloadable tools I learned, honed and devised to course correct my life — tools I continue to rely on to this day to keep my life focused and on track. Today's guest is a guy I relate to on so many levels. Like a big Venn diagram of overlapping circles — ultra-endurance multi-sport athlete, dad, husband, Ultraman competitor and EPIC5 finisher.Today's guest is unique in that he is the only guy I have ever had on the show who, like me, has competed in both the Ultraman World Championships and EPIC5 (not that there are very many of us – I think only a few).Today’s guest is also unique for his strong sense of faith, directed purpose and commitment to giving back in service to others the blessings bestowed upon him.Today’s guest is Christian Isakson.Christian and I first connected online several years ago on the eve of his 2011 attempt on EPIC5 (one year after I completed that challenge). Christian absolutely rocked it, completing the distance within the five day period I strived for, yet fell short. In the wake of that effort, I vividly recall several conversations in which I encouraged him to ply his trade at Ultraman. Ironically, Christian was unsure — at the time not yet wholly confident in his abilities despite the potential I clearly saw in him. Yet he obliged. To be clear, not because of me – I just gave him a nudge. And at this past year's World Championship in Hawaii, he proved his mettle and then some. His race was far from perfect, but Christian more than distinguished himself as a future contender for the top podium spot, putting his imprimatur on the race with a stunning Day 2 bike effort that had him leading the field for the majority of the brutal 170-mile day.Since our first Facebook exchange, Christian and I have been e-mail pen pals and phone buddies — corresponding consistently over the years about everything from balancing parenting & marriage to nutrition, training strategies, racing, the role of faith and most importantly service — how best to give this whole ultra-endurance experience greater meaning for others beyond mere race results. And yet Christian and I had never actually met in person. But no matter — from our first conversation we have been close; meeting in person existing as nothing more than a formality. All that changed a few weeks ago when Christian came down to Los Angeles for a short overnight visit with me and my family. The hug he gave me when I picked him up at the airport just made our brotherhood official.Today we sit down and sift through it all – the pain, passion, love and faith that fuels and drives him. The unique push-pull allure of ultra-distance racing. And how he balances this brutally demanding lifestyle to maintain a healthy and happy marriage, great relationship with his kids, and a rewarding career as a paramedic / firefighter. But what makes Christian really tick is his faith. His fidelity to his church. And how service plays into his success equation – from his endeavors with various church organizations to his involvement with Chris Lieto's non-profit More Than Sport and Ameena Project – an NGO which took him to Kenya recently to provide much needed medical care to underprivileged in urgent need.I can attest to the fact that Christian returned from Kenya a changed man. A better, more focused man with a keener sense of priorities. His short documentary on the experience tells the tale:In all honesty, it's rare that I get an opportunity to sit down with a guy with whom I share so many things in common. As a result, this conversation is long. Really long. 3 hours long. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Today I'm joined by my friend and (sometimes) summertime training partner Terenzo Bozzone – 5-time World Champion professional triathlete.I met “T” right after I completed EPIC5 back in 2010 when he arrived in town along with Chris McCormack for several weeks of intense spring training. With a gracious poise and maturity well beyond his mere 28 years, Terenzo is one of the brightest stars in professional triathlon, as well as a remarkable ambassador of the sport — always quick with a kind word of encouragement to his fellow training partners and never too busy to connect on a personal level with his many fans.I've had the honor of getting to spend some quality training time with Terenzo over the last three years and will say this — the sport of triathlon is a better place with him in it. T is one of the good guys. A guy you want to see win. A guy you can really get behind and root for.I'm so pleased that Terenzo took time out of his busy training schedule leading up to his peak race of the season — The Ironman 70.3 World Championships in Las Vegas just two weeks from today — to sit down and have a chat about his training, racing and life.I hope you enjoy the show. No doubt you'll end up a big fan of all things Terenzo. So do the guy a solid and let's all show him some Twitter and facebook love to get him pumped for the big show in Vegas!Just a reminder that we're now up and running on Soundcloud for those of you that prefer this service.
