Today, Don and I talk about his rock bottom moment and the changes that came soon after it, highlighting the grit and grace it takes to pivot in life and in business.   Don talks about the highs and lows of being a successful entrepreneur, how to use painful experiences as catalysts for growth, and his favorite tips and tools for boosting mental and emotional wellness while rising up from rock bottom. He emphasizes the power of radical self-acceptance and self-love, accepting your past so you can embrace your future, plus the benefits he's seen from ultra-endurance running.   “As men, we've got to look for ways to test ourselves… Historically, we were tested just surviving and so much of that survival has been taken care of for us. I think we've got to recognize there's a price to that comfort and convenience and pleasure. It robs us of our own strength and inner force.” – Don McLaughlin   Remember, there's no shortcut to success.   Key Takeaways / What You'll Learn: [00:45] About Don McLaughlin. But soccer mom Lara Love Hardin has been hiding a shady secret: she is funding her heroin addiction by stealing her neighbors' credit cards. Until it all comes crumbling down. Lara is convicted of thirty-two felonies and becomes inmate S32179. She learns that jail is a class system with a power structure that is somewhere between an adolescent sleepover party and Lord of the Flies. Furniture is made from tampon boxes, and Snickers bars are currency. But Lara quickly discovers that jailhouse politics aren't that different from the PTA meetings she used to attend, and she climbs the social ladder to become the "shot caller" and earns the nickname “Mama Love.” When she's released, harnessing lessons learned from women she was incarcerated with, she reinvents herself as a ghostwriter and successful agent. Now legally co-opting other people's identities through her writing, she goes on to meet Oprah, meditate with The Dalia Lama, and have dinner with Archbishop Desmond Tutu. But the shadow of her past follows her. Shame is a poison worse than heroin—there is no way to detox. Lara must learn how to forgive herself and others, navigate life as a felon on probation, and prove that she is more good than bad. The Many Lives of Mama Love is a heartbreaking, tender, and ultimately inspiring journey from shame to redemption, despite a system that makes it almost impossible for us to move beyond the worst thing we have ever done.   Praise for The Many Lives of Mama Love   “A suburban mom weathers addiction, jail, and parole in this roller-coaster debut memoir…Hardin mixes despair and comedy in her evocative prose: “I carefully pick through the bottom-of-purse debris until I find some small brown chips.... I don't know if I'm smoking heroin or food crumbs or lint, but I feel the anxiety slowly leave my chest.” This redemption story feels well earned.”—Publishers Weekly   “In addition to revealing the struggles of female felons in a misogynist justice system, the author celebrates her own determination to accept herself and begin again. A courageous and inspiring memoir.”—Kirkus   “A hilarious and heartbreaking confession that will not let you go until it is done—and then it will haunt you. It will give you hope in what is possible for each of us if we allow others—and ourselves—to move beyond our shame, find redemption, and write a new, more inspiring story of our lives.”—Lori Gottlieb, author of the New York Times bestseller, Maybe You Should Talk to Someone   “Lara Love Hardin writes with the same humor and bravery that helped her navigate incarceration, sobriety and a daunting return to the community to regain her place in her children's lives. This beautifully told story flies in the face of assumptions about substance use disorder and incarcerated women and shows how community and connection help people rebuild themselves for the better.”—Piper Kerman, author of the #1 New York Times bestseller, Orange is the New Black   “A compelling and timely rebuttal to the perverse and unjust notion that people who are convicted of crimes can only be criminals. This critically important idea is essential for a nation that has been so derailed by destructive “law and order” narratives that have left us both less just and less safe.”—Bryan Stevenson, author of the New York Times bestseller Just Mercy   “The Many Lives of Mama Love is a masterclass in perseverance. This brilliant memoir is a reminder and inspiration that sometimes the only way out of suffering is to go straight through it. This book will leave you inspired and empowered to reveal your own most authentic self.”—Rich Roll, bestselling author of Finding Ultra and host of The Rich Roll Podcast   “Laced with penetrating wit, written with unsparing honesty and manifesting irrepressible resilience, The Many Lives of Mama Love is a book to intrigue, enchant, instruct, entertain and inspire readers of all ages and backgrounds. It speaks to our common human experience of suffering and the healing that can follow.” —Gabor Maté M.D., author of the New York Times bestseller, The Myth of Normal   “Start this thrilling, heartrending, funny book, and you won't stop. I couldn't. From page one, I was swept into Hardin's remarkable, un-put-down-able, artfully told story of suffering and redemption. This book can help anyone who's struggled and felt hopelessness (and who hasn't?). shows that not only can we survive the bleakest times, but we can thrive in them and because of them.”—David Sheff, author of #1 New York Times bestseller, Beautiful Boy   “Hardin reveals who we truly are deep inside: infinite souls of limitless possibility. We are far more than the sum of what we have done and not done, what we have and do not have. In her profound, moving memoir, Hardin is honest, courageous, and challenges us to exceed the limiting definition we impose on ourselves and one another. We all can be redeemed.”—Dr. Lisa Miller, psychologist and author of the New York Times bestseller, The Spiritual Child “This book will make you laugh, cry, and realize that everyone deserves a chance and, sometimes more than one. A powerful, poignant memoir filled with grace, enlightenment and love.”—Dr. James Doty, author of the New York Times bestseller, Into The Magic Shop AUTHOR BIO: LARA LOVE HARDIN is a literary agent, author, prison reform advocate, and president of True Literary. Prior to founding True Literary, she was the co-Ceo of Idea Architects. She has an MFA in creative writing and is a four-time New York Times bestselling collaborative writer, including the #1 New York Times bestseller Designing Your Life, and 2018 Oprah Book Club pick, The Sun Does Shine, which she coauthored with Anthony Ray Hinton about his 30 years as an innocent man on Alabama's death row. In 2019, she won a Christopher Award for her work “affirming the highest values of the human spirit,” nominated for an NAACP Image Award, and short-listed for the Dayton Literary Peace Prize. Love Hardin lives in La Selva Beach, California, with her husband, Sam. She has four children, two stepchildren, five dogs, three cats, twenty-one chickens, and four ducks. For more information, visit her website at laralovehardin.com.

My guest today is Josh LaJaunie. Josh not only has an incredible story, but an incredible heart. There is no doubt in my mind you all will instantly connect and fall in love with the man Josh is. His authenticity and ability to express how he feels and where he is at, with his Bayou accent will have you listening to every word. And that is great, because Josh has been through some INCREDIBLE changes and feats in his life, so you want to listen. He was born and raised in south louisiana. He grew up hunting, fishing, drinking, eating, playing football, and getting fat. Ultimately he found himself tipping the scales at over 400 lbs in early 2011. He has since lost 200 lbs, developed a love for running-running over 10 ultra marathons & even placing first place, and is now exclusively a plant-based, plant-powered, aspiring athlete. He is now on a mission to share his journey to help us all take that next step to make healthier choices. This episode will have you crying with us and taking away SO many tools and shifts to help you anywhere you are on your journey. What you'll hear in this episode: *The 1st 60 minutes are us doing REAL talk - just fair warning we didn't take this out. -Josh shares so authentically where he is at right now. It's been a tough season for him, since Covid, and this past year. He shares what's been going on and how he is human through it all. -That no matter what we have accomplished in the past, that doesn't mean we don't go through seasons that suck, that one thing after another brings us down. -I highly recommend starting HERE -listening to us do the REAL talk -and then taking some extra time to hear more of Josh's story & tips from his journey of being 400+lbs to becoming an ultra runner, to turning to a plant based diet. *About an hour in we dive into his story - He's been trying not to be fat his whole life. -He's been a typical south Louisiana kid who grew up eating fried deer meat sandwiches, skinning hogs, drinking a 12 pack of Bud & some whiskey and maybe even some chemicals to stay up all night hunting or doing crazy stuff, before he shifted. *The Crescent City Classic 10k - the first race he did and how he got started running, ran that race at 320/330lbs in 1hr and 43minutes. *How his Dad's struggling with mental health was an impetus for change. *That first month he started working out - scale said ‘Error' - meaning over 400lbs -He started jogging around 380lbs, working out at the gym, ran the race after losing 50lbs *He had to convince his family with his ACTIONS - that this weight loss, running, and lifestyle was real. -Then they started to come over to his side and shift themselves. Now all his family started to change and they all lost weight and have kept it off. -How giving up meat and dairy was the final 1-2 punch to not only lose the weight, but to keep it off!! (1hr 15 min) *Josh shares some great whole food plant based resources - the book Whole: Rethinking the Science of Nutrition and Finding Ultra by Rich Roll *The Pleasure Trap - Josh shares an idea from Dr. Doug Lyles - it takes 20 days to adapt to new foods, like oreos to broccoli. (1hr 25min) *“Rather than think of it, I need to avoid these foods, understand their power, and RESPECT them.” To help you get through cravings or food that has power over you. - A powerful idea from his friend David Clark (1hr 30min) *And SO MUCH MORE Find Josh on IG @joshlajaunie or his website www.joshlajaunie.com to learn more about Josh and continue to follow along on his journey.

A central theme of my podcast is the power of a plant-based diet to enhance the quality of life for both the individual and the whole.Over time, the show has grown to embrace a wider variety of themes—art, entertainment, cuisine, entrepreneurship, spirituality, sports, social justice, creativity, equality, and more—each guest sharing his/her respective expertise and experience. Some conversations traverse more than one field. Only a select few impart powerful, impactful lessons across several.Joanne Molinaro is one such human—a cultural phenomenon who goes by the moniker, The Korean Vegan.Born in Chicago to immigrant parents from what is today North Korea, Joanne is a (soon to be) New York Times bestselling cookbook author, food blogger, marathon runner, social activist and corporate law firm partner (although she just resigned last week) with millions of fans across a variety of social media platforms—including over 2.5 million on TikTok—obsessed with her wisdom-laced and thought-provoking food content, garnering her features on CNN, CBS, The Food Network and many other mainstream media outlets.Joanne's audience isn't just massive, it's insanely engaged—a loyalty rooted in her wholesale re-imagination of the cuisine landscape. Her content is so fresh, so beyond nice photographs or the A-B-C food preparation tutorials to which we've grown accustomed, that it's fair to say Joanne has pioneered an entirely new content genre altogether.Exquisitely captured in irresistible sixty-second short films with a penchant for virality, across her social channels Joanne masterfully entwines food, culture, education and self-improvement with incredibly honest, vulnerable, heartfelt stories about life, relationships, grief, family, divorce, surviving abuse, and the immigrant experience. Her deeply personal yarns tug on the universal—an authentic relatability that leaves most teary-eyed upon each's film's conclusion. One of my most memorable encounters of 2021, our conversation spans her remarkable career balancing corporate law firm partner duties with the full-court demands of her growing voice of public influence. We cover her path to veganism (a journey that ironically began with her husband reading Finding Ultra), her experience as a Korean woman living in the diaspora, the many ways in which food and social justice advocacy intersect, and the importance of humanizing the immigrant story. To read more click here. You can also watch listen to our exchange on YouTube. And as always, the podcast streams wild and free on Apple Podcasts and Spotify. This is a powerful, potentially life-altering conversation on the importance of creativity, self-empowerment, and leveraging social media for good.May this extraordinary woman inspire you to think more deeply about your own story—and the indelible power inherent in sharing it.Peace + Plants,Listen, Watch & SubscribeApple Podcasts | YouTube | Spotify | Stitcher | Google PodcastsThanks to this week's sponsors:LMNT: A science-backed electrolyte drink mix with everything you need and nothing you don't. Matt Frazier is a vegan ultramarathoner, author, and entrepreneur, best known as the founder of the No Meat Athlete movement and host of the No Meat Athlete Radio podcast. Matt found he could run longer and faster with the help of a plant-based diet, and shortly after adopting a plant-based diet, Matt qualified for the Boston Marathon after taking over 100 minutes off his first marathon time. He has run several 50-milers and a 100-mile ultramarathon on a vegan diet. Matt's books have sold over 125,000 copies in five languages, and his work have been featured in books including Rich Roll's Finding Ultra, Brendan Brazier's Thrive Foods, and Seth Godin's What to Do When It's Your Turn. Matt was named by Greatist as one of the 100 Most Influential People in Health and Fitness, and Sports Illustrated has called The No Meat Athlete Cookbook one of the best Health & Wellness books. Matt has a brand new book out called the Plant Based Athlete and I couldn't leave out his equally amazing co-author Robert Cheeke. Robert began a vegan lifestyle for ethical reasons at age 15, weighing just 120 pounds. Today he is the author of the best-selling books, Vegan Bodybuilding & Fitness, Shred It!, Plant-Based Muscle. He is often referred to as the “Godfather of Vegan Bodybuilding,” growing the industry from infancy in 2002, to where it is today.  As a two-time natural bodybuilding champion, Robert is considered one of VegNews magazine's Most Influential Vegan Athletes. He tours around the world sharing his story of transformation from a skinny farm kid to champion vegan bodybuilder. Robert is the founder and president of Vegan Bodybuilding & Fitness and maintains the popular website, VeganBodybuilding.com. He is a regular contributor to No Meat Athlete, Forks Over Knives, and Vegan Strong. In my conversation with Robert and Matt, we talk about common nutrition myths about plant-based and vegan diets (here's a hint--they are not always the same) and how more and more top athletes around the world are discovering that plant-based nutrition is not simply some fad diet, but a powerful performance and recovery enhancer. We talk about protein, calories, macros, and whether or not you need to be all in to reap the benefits of plants. As you can probably guess, this was a delightful conversation for me because not only did I get a chance to interact with two people whose work I think so highly of, but I also get to talk about my two most favorite subjects:  running and food.

Can you be plant-based and an elite athlete? Matt Frazier says absolutely yes.  Matt, a vegan ultra marathoner, author, and entrepreneur is a plant-based diet advocate, but he also knows it's not for everyone. Founder of No Meat Athlete, Matt is all about providing the tools for thriving on a plant-based diet and how athletes can be at their very best with this type of nutrition.  Matt is known for his No Meat Athlete Radio podcast and his books, which have sold over 125,000 copies in five languages. His work has also been featured in books by Rich Roll's Finding Ultra, Brendan Brazier's Thrive Foods, and Seth Godin's What to Do When It's Your Turn. In addition, Sports Illustrated called The No Meat Athlete Cookbook one of the best Health & Wellness books.  Now he's back with a new book The Plant Based Athlete, written in collaboration with Robert Cheeke. This book guides those interested in making the important shift to a plant-based diet in how to do so with the best, most transformative results. In this week's episode, I catch up with Matt on the creation of the No Meat Athlete, a deep dive into what you need to know about protein and carbs and how not to worry about what people think. Rich Roll, globally famous podcaster and former DI swimmer from Stanford, has a superpower—vulnerability—and when times get tough, he taps into its marrow. There was a point early in his rapid rise when Rich appeared to own the world. His book was on countless top-10 lists, his podcast was blowing up with listeners, and CNN had crowned him one of the Fittest Men on the Planet. At the some time, his finances were devastatingly strained. The economics of his new life didn’t match his current reality, not yet. The universe, in Rich’s words, decided he needed to burn a little longer.  Rich’s swimming-roots guided him through this challenging period: “It took a lot of faith and a lot of grit and hard work – all things I learned as a swimmer, when you’ve got to get up at 4:30 in the morning and go to practice. I relied upon those habits and those tools that I learned as a very young person to weather that storm and get to the place I am now. These tools that you learn as a swimmer are so important in terms of how you apply them to other goals and aspirations that you have in your life. That ability to show up and grind and do it in the dark when no one’s watching, be anonymous in this pursuit of mastery, is such a gift. So, whether you become an Olympian as a swimmer or you struggle to make your Junior National cut, whatever it is, you’re learning life skills that have applicability in ways that you can’t possibly imagine.” Click here to listen and subscribe on Spotify Click here to listen and subscribe on Apple Podcasts Click here to listen and subscribe on Podbean Click here to listen and subscribe on Google Click here to listen and subscribe on YouTube Click here to listen and subscribe on Listen Notes Click here to listen and subscribe on Stitcher Click here to listen and subscribe on iHeartRadio Click here to listen and subscribe on Amazon Click here to listen and subscribe on Pandora Music: Otis McDonaldwww.otismacmusic.com

Today we are back with another story behind the story of a change-maker who is an absolute podcast role model. In this episode we welcome Rich Roll, a champion swimmer turned alcoholic, turned lawyer who ended up having a few run-ins with the law himself. Rich’s incredible story about hitting rock-bottom and clawing his way back to sobriety is one that has inspired many along the way. After going through the recovery process, Rich began putting the pieces of his life back together only to realize that he was out of shape and burning the candle at both ends — essentially hitting rock-bottom physically. So, in his 40’s, Rich dusted off his training trucks and started swimming again, switched to a plant-based diet, and used this combination to gain back his health. This led him down a path towards doing ultra-endurance races and being in the best shape of his life! Rich then when ton to write about how he overcame all of these rock-bottom moments in his #1 bestselling book, Finding Ultra, which led to the launch of his wildly popular and inspirational Rich Roll podcast. During our conversation with Rich, we are going to explore how he went from being a bestselling author to starting his super successful podcast, which was not as linear of a process as you might think. Rich discovered that even with a bestselling book under his belt, the speaking gigs and other paid opportunities that you’d expect with all that success simply were not happening! This resulted in Rich hitting rock-bottom again, financially, which got so bad that his house was in foreclosure, his cars were repossessed, and the city even repossessed his garbage cans. It was at that time that Rich stepped out and launched his podcast in his friend’s barn, while flat broke, but still full of hope and inspiration. So whether you are thinking about getting sober, quitting your day job, starting a plant-based diet, writing a book, or even getting into the best shape of your life, don’t miss out on this episode!Key Points From This Episode:Reflecting on Rich’s favorite activities during his childhood. How Rich was impacted by his grandfather’s legacy later in life. For the second part of our discussion on vegan athletes, The ChickPeeps chat to Brian Rose, the founder and host of London Real, who recently went plant-based when challenged by his friend, musician and triathlete, John Joseph, to compete in a half Ironman and do it vegan. Brian offers a unique perspective on going vegan as somebody able to observe the changes that occurred within his body and mind in a short space of time, and who's primary motivator in trying veganism were the health benefits. Also on this episode: Brian shares how the many vegan guests he interviews on his weekly show piqued his curiosity about the lifestyle. “People don't do what you say, they do what you do.” Brian talks about how he had to increase his food intake when he went plant-based to keep up with the demands of his training. The changes Brian witnessed in his mind and body, and how green vegetables played a crucial part in his training regime. We discuss why many athletic coaches are vehemently against their athletes following a vegan diet. Brian gives his 3 top tips for new vegans. “If it hurts, don't eat that.” Fear = False Expectations Appearing Real. How going vegan prompts a shift in one's thought process and a different outlook on life. "If you look at the world in 50 years, I mean it's a no-brainer to me, that we will all be eating more plant based, it's just gonna be what does that look like?” Links Follow Brian and London Real on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook. The All Things Risk Podcast

Why is it that sometimes, good people do “bad” things?  This is a question that has been on my mind as late, and it's also one that tees up this week's episode.  Tom Hardin, AKA “Tipper X”  - the most important FBI informant in the largest insider trading case in decades - is my guest, and I am both grateful and delighted to have him on the show to share his story. Tom is a former Wall Street executive – he was a junior partner at a hedge fund that specialised in the tech industry.  Tom and his partners felt that they were falling short in a very competitive industry in which they also felt that some of their competitors were crossing an ethical line – that is, they were engaging in insider trading (which is of course illegal in the USA and most countries). As you'll hear from Tom, there came a moment when he decided to cross that same line. He made a few small, but illegal trades based on “Material Non Public Information” MNPI – that is, information that has not gone to the public and if used in a stock trade, can make the trader a lot of money.  In Tom's words, this was “taking some crumbs off the table.”  No one gets hurt. Until…. One day while picking up his dry cleaning, Tom received a tap on the shoulder.  It was the FBI. He was charged with a felony. As part of his arrangement with the authorities, he became “Tipper X” – the FBI's most cooperative witness in Operation Perfect Hedge – the largest insider trading investigation in 25 years.  Tom's efforts led to 80 guilty pleas and convictions – including and eventually, of Raj Rajaratnum of the Galleon Group, one of the largest hedge funds in the world at the time. Tom's story is a cautionary tale.  He wore a wire.  He had to inform on some of his friends and former colleagues.  His felony conviction meant he could not find employment in the career he chose, in spite of his education at the prestigious Wharton School. However, it is also a tale of resilience. Tom now does speaking and training for compliance departments of hedge funds, the FBI and for business and law schools.  He tapped into running and now runs ultra marathons. His story is also the subject of an upcoming documentary. I found myself enthralled in my conversation with Tom. A reason for this is that several years ago, I almost breached a similar ethical line. I was fortunate not to have – but I can't say it never would have happened. I think we all have the potential to inadvertently cause harm and do things we know we shouldn't.  Tom's tale should give us all pause to think about why and how we might not do the right thing – and how to avoid that.  Show notes: Tom's website: www.tipperx.com On Twitter: https://twitter.com/iamtipperx On Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/iamtipperx On Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/tom-hardin-0952324 Article in the Wall Street Journal “'Tipper X' Hangs over Galleon” - http://www.wsj.com/articles/SB10001424052748703672104574654693200452698 Story on Tom's sentencing in the New York Times: https://www.nytimes.com/2015/02/25/business/dealbook/onetime-mystery-informant-in-galleon-insider-trading-case-to-be-sentenced.html The Galleon Group: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galleon_Group Tom on the Rich Roll Podcast: https://www.richroll.com/podcast/tipperx/ Dan Ariely: www.danariely.com Finding Ultra by Rich Roll Eat and Run by Scott Jurek  _________________ Did you like what you heard? Small, progressive steps create lasting change. "I allowed myself to be imperfect and to fail."-Rich Roll The Cheat Sheet: Are you on The Window Diet? Junk food vegetarianism: what is it? Rich explains the problem with our "hacking" culture. What forges true character? How to master your monkey mind. And so much more... Allowing ourselves to be imperfect, to fail and to ask for help are not widely accepted in our culture, but they are key to creating lasting change and a fulfilling life according to our guest for today's show. Rich Roll is an ultra-athlete, podcaster and the best-selling author of Finding Ultra. Today he joins us to talk about his book, how he overcame addiction, created lasting, healthy habits and changed the mental story he was telling himself. We cover all of those topics, and more on episode 366 of The Art of Charm. Click Here to Support The Show and get 10% off Onnit! More About This Show: Rich Roll is a man who doesn't do anything halfway, he admits to going "all in" when he commits to something and his history proves as much. He was a talented athlete in high school, becoming one of the best swimmers in his state and went on to pursue swimming in college at Stanford. But he went down the rabbit hole of alcohol and drug abuse, sidelining his athletic pursuits and his entire life. At the age of 31 he got sober and began repairing the damage he had done. It took him years to do so, but he eventually got back on track. By 39 he was on the fast track to becoming a partner at his corporate law firm in Los Angeles, he was building his dream home in Malibu Canyon and was a happily married father. On the outside everything looked perfect, but in reality he didn't feel fulfilled. He loved his wife, his family but those were the only bright spots for him. His work and his health were exhausting him, and something needed to be done. His first order of business was simply to experiment. He did a 7-day juice cleanse and gave his body a fresh slate to work with. From there he went vegetarian, and relied on his wife to be a sounding board and guidepost. She'd always been a healthy person so she helped him experiment to find what worked best for him. Originally he just wanted more energy to play with his kids, but Rich doesn't do anything halfway and he went on to become an elite ultra-endurance athlete and health advocate. He doesn't call himself an expert because he doesn't claim to have all the answers, he just shares his journey and his findings on that journey. And we go in-depth on many of those findings, including how to create lasting change and how to stop allowing the story we tell ourselves to run our lives. Rich has created long-term change, in any area of his life, through incremental shifts. He suggests making one change, like buying almond milk instead of cow's milk, and cementing that change before moving on to something else. Small shifts over time create habits, which last. The same holds true with the stories we tell ourselves. If we create a small shift by noticing our self-talk, over time we can become aware of how this self-talk and our own stories are running our lives. With that awareness we can shift out of our "monkey mind" and take the reigns of our own lives, instead of allowing our programming to run us. Rich and I also talk about inspiration vs implementation, what's wrong with our hacking culture and so much more. Have a listen to get all the insights and wisdom Rich has to share on this episode.
