[00:35] Why Dr. Sideroff Decided To Dedicate His Life To Resilience Dr. Sideroff has always been interested in studying the brain mechanisms of learning and memory. He was interested in finding the brain's connections, so he started a career as a brain researcher. Eventually, he started doing stress management workshops for organizations and corporations. After the workshops, people felt inspired to make changes in their lives. A few months later, very few people actually followed through with those changes. Down the road, Dr. Sideroff began to identify why we have great resistance to managing our stress. [05:45] Keeping The Nervous System In A Good Place Through Resilience When we think about resilience, we think about the ability to bounce back and recover after a stressful event. If you view the world as dangerous, you expect a problem to arise. When you anticipate danger, your body mobilizes for that danger. If you're continually activating your nervous system in preparation for danger, you're not allowing your body to recover fully. The ability to bounce back is part of resilience. [09:40] How The Environment of Our Childhood Will Affect Our Resilience Primitive Gestalt patterns are how our brain develops throughout childhood based on the lessons of our childhood environment. Our brain literally forms its circuitry based on those childhood lessons. We adapt to our childhood environment. Then our adaptation gets locked in. If our childhood was dangerous, we as adults continue to think the world is just as dangerous. Resilience is about being able to think outside the box and adapt to our current environment. Many of the consequences of our childhood are not something that we're always conscious about. [14:50] Unpacking The Unconscious To Live A Happier Life The first step in unpacking the unconscious is a willingness to face complicated feelings, emotions, and issues. Next, you have to be accepting of whatever emotions you have. You can love your mother and father yet still be angry at them. Living a happier and healthier life is about a willingness to grow up. [20:50] The First Three Pillars From The Path: Mastering the Nine Pillars of Resilience and Success What is the most crucial relationship that you have? It's the relationship with yourself. Consider these questions: Are you critical and judgmental of yourself? Do you put yourself down? Are you loving, accepting, and compassionate toward yourself? The first pillar is all about how you treat yourself and then comparing that to the healthy or ideal way of treating yourself. You can do this by becoming consciously aware of your thoughts. The second pillar is your relationship with others. Are you able to tell the difference between healthy and toxic relationships? The third pillar is a relationship with something more significant; this extends to the community at large. [33:40] Autonomic Dysregulation Syndrome and The Process of Aging Dr. Sideroff has proposed an actual diagnostic code which he calls autonomic dysregulation syndrome. 70 to 80% of visits to the doctor's office result from this autonomic dysregulation syndrome. It underlies whether you have headaches, high blood pressure, or autoimmune disease. We now have direct evidence that stress speeds up the aging process. All illness is simply an expression of the aging process. Luckily, resilience is one way of slowing down the aging process. [43:45] The Connection Between Heart Rate Variability and Gratitude Your heart rate is never on a constant level. If it is constant, that's a sign that you are unhealthy. You want to have a heart rate change in a very systematic way. Heart rate variability links your cardiovascular system, nervous system, respiratory system, and emotions. As you breathe in, your heart rate speeds up because you're activating the sympathetic branch of your nervous system. One of the things that facilitate optimal heart rate variability is gratitude. Today, I am blessed to have here with me Gigi Ashworth. She is a former competitive snowboarder and horseback rider that has since become a popular allergen-friendly food personality and cook across social media platforms, with a master's certificate in Nutrition Communications from Tufts University. However, prior to obtaining her master's degree, she got her broadcast journalism degree from the University of Colorado, Boulder, and even worked as the 3 AM weather girl at Denver's ABC affiliate. When she finished her studies in Colorado, she moved to Los Angeles (she now lives in Georgia again with her husband and two baby boys, who find her adoration for salmon quite comical) to pursue a career in the entertainment hosting field. That career focus led her to start a humorous blog and YouTube channel called GiGi Eats Celebrities that showcases her personality and her extreme passion for realistic nutrition. This blog and YouTube channel turned into platforms where people with diet, nutrition, and health concerns, as her own enthusiasm for such topics stems from her severe diet-related issues (Crohn's disease, celiac disease, ulcerative colitis, IBS, and no large intestine), can get advice (such as traveling with food intolerances and/or autoimmune diseases) along with allergen-friendly/keto diet approved recipes that everyone can enjoy. Finding out what that obstacle is is the key to overcoming certain health issues. Once these obstacles are taken away, everything becomes much easier for an individual. These interferences aren't easy to identify or solve, which is why it is up to everybody to identify what they are. [06:28] The Flaws of Popular Weight Loss Methods Many influencers, nutritionists, and dieticians claim that energy balance is the only thing you'll need to lose body fat. Calories in and out are a big deal; however, both can change. This concept is entirely dependent on the body not changing its energy usage all day which makes it very flawed. The calorie concept is deceptive because it works short-term for weight loss but not fat loss. There is a massive difference between these two. [12:00] The Pros and Cons of the Keto Diet Two camps are relevant to this diet. The first one is the people who preach that it's a revolution, and the other is the ones who oppose it due to their belief in its health risks. There is a lot of misconception that still exists about the Keto Diet. One of the most anti-inflammatory interventions available is the Ketogenic Diet. [24:47] What the Mitochondria Does When You Are Stressed There are three different types of stress: Mental and Emotional Stress, Physical Stress, and Chemical Stress. You give your digestive system a break. [23:15] A twenty-four hours once a week, and why does he do it? The dinner-to-dinner fast helped to increase the time of his fast oxidation. Lengthening the fast and doing a full day fast helps make him feel like superman. Tap into the knowledge of our ancestors and include the new research; studies aren't supposed to overwhelm you. You must incorporate how something makes you feel; if you feel energized with something do it. Start your fasts small and then build up. [30:40] How to overcome a standstill in weight; when you can't seem to lose more weight It depends on what you have been doing to lose weight; was it keto, vegetarian diet, intermittent fasting, and so on? It also depends on the period you have been doing what you have been for losing that weight. Your body gets efficient at breaking down fat and you reach a plateau after a certain time; you need to cycle the carbs back in. This way your body becomes better at breaking fats back again. Easier to switch back to carbs and take in the enzymes. This switching back and forth is an easier way to go about it; you need to create diversity in the gut. Our ancestors would have a diverse line of foods that they consumed. [39:50] Bio-individuality and the elimination method People should remove vegetables but only for some time and they should be added back in gradually. You don't know what is affecting you until you eliminate the suspects; you don't know what anti-nutrients are responding to you. A carnivore diet for a while can help improve your gut. After this has happened which can be between one to three months you start adding plant foods to your diet slowly. This way you get to realize what is affecting you through your gut-healing journey. It Helps identify allergies. But first, you must go on a gradual approach to searching for yourself. [44:00] The glucose monitor (CGM) and the Oura ring Your glucose monitor can pick up the signs and aware you. Oura ring is a tool; HRV drops with eating more plant toxins and vice versa means that a carnivore diet suits you the best. Ray's blood sugar pattern picks up when he wakes up. It drops during his fasting period but picks up gradually. This is because his body is optimal. This is because of having more muscles too. However, you shouldn't be sick for lengthy periods. [10:50] The Impact Your Feelings and Attitude Can Have With A Cancer Diagnosis You need to support the body when you have cancer. Anger is going to make cancer way worse. When you get a cancer diagnosis, it's a reason to look at your health and healing differently. One in every two people in their lifetime will get cancer. 100% of men over the age of 80 have prostate cancer. Also, many people die with thyroid cancer but not from thyroid cancer. Remember, cancer doesn't necessarily have to take your life; it's part of how your cells are aging. [15:45] Did You Know That Cancer Is A Survival Mechanism? Cancer is a survival mechanism. Every single one of our cells has a slew of mitochondria. Each of the mitochondria produces energy. Stress, toxicity, inflammation, and glyphosates are damaging our mitochondria. Cancer is your body trying to keep your cells alive. [23:35] How To Support Your Mitochondrial Health A 13-hour fast will support your mitochondria. Eliminating toxicity will also help your mitochondria. Get rid of foods with glyphosates, herbicides, and pesticides. Don't brush your teeth with damaging chemicals. Also, make sure you are going to the bathroom every day. If you are regularly eliminating, then you are not putting stress on the liver. Drinking lots of water will help keep your cells healthy. [34:30] The Hospitals Are Feeding Cancer Patients The Wrong Types of Foods Most doctors do not want to engage in a conversation about nutrition and cancer. We need to have a critical talk about fueling the body properly. When you're in the hospital, they give you foods full of sugar, feeding cancer. You'll do better with your cancer treatments if your body is in ketosis. [39:40] Is Prostate Cancer Associated With Sedentary Behavior? If you're given a prostate cancer diagnosis, they'll put you on androgen blockers to suppress your testosterone. However, Dr. Bouchard thinks people should be moving more. As we age, it's common for most people to sit at their computer all day long and not move. Testosterone declines when you aren't moving. Dr. Bouchard likes to get men working on a hula hoop. In general, most people do not move around enough. [42:30] The Connection Between Chronic Stress and Cancer Fear, anxiety, sleepless nights, and high cortisol can worsen cancer. If lifestyle and food were the same, stress would make cancer worse. When your stress levels are high, your sleep and how you repair at night won't be the same. The standard guidelines and tools we use in America have a long way to go. [12:50] The Reason You Should Ask For Advanced Lipid Testing Lipoprotein is a boat that carries cholesterol. There are two different boats: Type A and Type B. Type B is the bad boat. An abundance of smaller particles causes more damage. When looking at a standard profile, you're not going to get the clarity to know how many Type A vs. Type B you have. You can only know how many Type A vs. Type B you have by getting an advanced lipid profile. [20:45] Emotional Metabolism: Stress Is Worse Than Chocolate Cake What is the emotional impact of your behaviors and thoughts on glucose control? Everyone knows that stress is not good for you. However, you can track your emotional status and measure glucose against it. Even if you have zero grams of carbs, stress can increase your glucose levels. Early signs of stress will flood the liver with glucose. It's time to do meaningful things to mitigate your stress levels. [24:45] Using Gratitude and Mindful Breathing Throughout A Stressful Day How do you use gratitude on the spot after a stressful event? Many people practice gratitude and journaling in the morning. However, your mind can go into utter chaos when you deal with things throughout the day. Moments of gratitude throughout the day will be essential. Also, be mindful of your breathing patterns during the day. Mindful breathing will vastly improve your blood pressure and blood glucose. [30:10] The Relationship Between Heart Rate Variability To Parasympathetic Effect Heart rate variability is our most readily accessible metric for parasympathetic activity. Variety is the spice of life; you also want variety in your heartbeat. When you have variation, it's a sign that your parasympathetic system is more active. Remind yourself to practice mindfulness throughout the day to improve your parasympathetic system. [38:10] When Intermittent Fasting, You Need To Practice Strength Training Fasting is therapeutic; if it is misused, it can have adverse side effects. Identify the timing of your fast that works for you. Make sure you're getting adequate protein during your eating window. Most people that are fasting are doing minimal amounts of exercise. Unfortunately, when you aren't exercising, you may be losing muscle. If you're not in a strength training program and aren't getting enough protein, you shouldn't be fasting. [42:30] Eating Protein Early In The Day To Improve Glucose and Overall Mood Just to keep it simple, you need about a gram of protein per pound of ideal body weight. Distribute protein throughout the day. Also, make sure to activate mTOR toward that first meal. With proper protein intake, your glucose levels will be much more stable. Eat more protein with your first meal and see how you feel. [48:20] Three Things To Consider Regarding Your Health: Carbs, Cooking Oils, and Circadian Rhythm The 3 C's: Carbs Cooking Oils Circadian Rhythm If you're a sedentary person, it's best to watch your carb intake. Not all organic wines are natural; however, natural wines are always organic. Drinking organic wine is better than drinking non-organic wine. Biodynamic farming was developed in 1925 as an advanced form of organic farming. This type of farming will include harvesting based on the lunar cycle, and they create natural organic potions for the vines. [38:35] Natural Wine Is Always Fermented With Wild Indigenous Native Yeast The next hallmark of natural wine is that they are always fermented with wild indigenous native yeast. Commercial wines are always fermented with GMO lab-cultured yeast. You can't make commercial wines using wild native yeast because the yeast is too unstable, and it won't work in large volumes. That's why natural wine growers don't have brand names; they can't create enough wine using wild yeast. People use substandard olive oil and add a little bit of decent quality olive oil to it enough to pass a lab test. Fraud in the olive oil industry has been happening for a really long time. During a study, 70% of olive oils came back as not meeting the quality standards of extra-virgin. Most Americans don't know what great olive oil tastes like. [07:40] Olive Oils Are Being Cut With Inflammatory Oils Like Canola Oil You have to be very careful when you buy an olive oil blend. Make sure to read labels in the grocery store very carefully. Olive oil can be in a fancy bottle, with a fancy label and a high price tag. However, look at the back, and you might see that it's actually a blend. It could be a blend of soybean oil or sunflower oil, but it's being sold as extra virgin olive oil. More often than not, it's a lower grade of oil that's being sold as an extra virgin oil. [10:10] Tips For Buying Olive Oil In A Grocery Store Always look for olive oil in dark glass; the dark glass helps protect the oil. Glass bottles are preferable. You also want to look for a harvest date on the olive oil bottle. Most bottles won't have a harvest date on them. Look for oils that have a third-party certification. [15:50] How A Professional Taster Would Examine Olive Oil Quality A professional taster would taste out of small blue glass cups. Blue disguises the color of the olive oil. Color is not an indicator of quality. Many fraudulent olive oils will be cut with seed oils, but also add chlorophyll to adjust the color. [00:40] Why Dr. Sowa Got Involved In The Health Space Even before Dr. Sowa went to college, she had discovered the field of public health. Plus, the idea of prevention always was very attractive to her. Sowa always wondered why doctors want to treat the disease if they could prevent it. At college, she really started to understand a holistic view of what it means to be healthy. Eventually, Dr. Sowa realized a lot of problems in health boils down to metabolic dysfunction. [04:40] Why Are 88% of Americans Metabolically Inflexible? So, Dr. Sowa says the solution is actually pretty straightforward. You can reverse type 2 diabetes; again, it is reversible! Many people think a low-carb and high-fat diet will give you a heart attack or a stroke; that's simply not true. The three macronutrients are carbohydrates, protein, and fat. Out of those three macronutrients, carbohydrates will spike glucose and insulin the most. It makes total sense that we should eat more protein and fat to reverse high insulin. [16:45] What Is An Optimal Range For Fasting Insulin? Optimal is usually under five. Even up to eight is okay for fasting insulin. Anything higher than eight means your body is making too much insulin in response to carbohydrates. When Dr. Sowa does bloodwork, she's looking for metabolic syndrome. [20:50] How Often Should Someone Retest Their Markers? You should test once a quarter. If you are embarking on a new lifestyle change, Dr. Sowa says to test right away. That way, you have the data. Once you start eating keto, then you can see what improves. Your markers are a better victory than what you see on the scale. [24:20] How Dr. Sowa Wants To Help People With Polycystic Ovary Syndrome PCOS is a disease of insulin resistance in the majority of cases. For years, the medical community has gone about treating this in the wrong way. Up to 50% of women with PCOS will go on to develop type two diabetes by the time they're 40. Women with PCOS can make themselves feel better by following a low carbohydrate diet. Sowa developed a kit to help women get a diagnosis. We should be moving right after we eat to take up any free glucose and use it for energy instead of fat storage. Five minutes will make a difference! The sweet spot would be fifteen to twenty minutes. [34:10] How Important Is Quality Sleep Each Night? If you don't get good sleep, sleep, you will be hungry and crave carbohydrates. Good quality and consistent sleep will keep your cortisol levels down. When cortisol spikes from poor sleep, the hunger hormone will also spike. Plus, you will get a spike in insulin. When insulin is high, it will drive hunger. One of the silent epidemics in our country is sleep apnea, where people cannot get good sleep no matter how hard they try. Today, I am blessed to have here with me Shana Hussin. She grew up in Wisconsin, and earned her dietetics degree from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point in 1999. While very active throughout her entire lifetime, she struggled with weight gain in college, despite following conventional nutrition recommendations and exercising extensively. [00:45] The Story Behind Shana's Son and His Ulcerative Colitis Diagnosis One day, Shana's son got diarrhea; they didn't think much of it. After weeks, he still had diarrhea. So, they went and got testing, but nothing was coming back. Three months after he started having symptoms, he had a colonoscopy done, and he was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis. He had lost a bunch of weight and couldn't keep up with sports at the age of eleven. Later, the doctor said Shana needed to get ready to take his colon out. However, Shana found experts outside of the conventional medicine that helped heal her son. [13:30] Why Shana Started To Question Her Dietician Training Shana was a dietician for ten years before she started questioning things. She told people to eat low fat, mostly plants and whole grains. Ten years in, Shana's clients weren't getting any better. After having three children, Shana started to develop her own health problems. Shana had four or five canker sores in her mouth, bloating, and a lack of energy. She knew something in her diet had to be the problem. It took a long time to figure out what was wrong.
