Every New Year brings about its impending challenges, conflicts, ordeals, and sufferings. Likewise, there is hope for rejuvenation and a revitalization of purpose despite the debts and psychological baggage of the past. For meditators, every effort to empower our spirituality promises the blossoming of divine potential and the hope for a spiritual renaissance in our daily lives. One such essential practice for this is pranayama: the conscious harnessing of vital breath to conserve, redirect, and amplify creative energy. Discover the principles and praxis for energizing our most virtuous qualities and overcoming the impurities of the psyche. By controlling breath, one can harness the most powerful force of the universe, which resides precisely in our sexual glands. Initially a raw, brute, and dynamic potential that can produce physical life, the creative energy can also engender the possibilities of inspiration, insight, intuition, and mystical revelation when fully mastered within ourselves.

Every New Year's Eve, millions of Germans turn on their TVs to rewatch an old favourite – the comedy Dinner for One.The black and white sketch is in English and features a British cast but is virtually unknown in the United Kingdom. The two-hander starts with butler James laying a table for five people for dinner. Then Miss Sophie arrives. It's her 90th birthday and she wants to celebrate with four friends: Sir Toby, Admiral von Schneider, Mr Pomeroy, and Mr Winterbottom. The only problem is they're all dead so James must impersonate the guests – and drink on their behalf – with hilarious results. The late German entertainer Peter Frankenfeld first saw the show in the theatre during a trip to Blackpool. He wanted to record it in Germany but Freddie Frinton, who played the butler and owned the copyright to the show, initially refused to take part because of his experiences during World War Two.Peter's son Thomas Frankenfeld tells Vicky Farncombe how his father's own war story, involving snipers and a Nazi surgeon, persuaded Freddie to change his mind. The programme is now shown on TV every New Year's Eve in places including Germany, Scandinavia and Switzerland.“We watch it every year,” says Thomas. “It's really funny. Still after all this time.”Eye-witness accounts brought to life by archive. Witness History is for those fascinated by the past. We take you to the events that have shaped our world through the eyes of the people who were there. For nine minutes every day, we take you back in time and all over the world, to examine wars, coups, scientific discoveries, cultural moments and much more.Recent episodes explore everything from football in Brazil, the history of the ‘Indian Titanic' and the invention of air fryers, to Public Enemy's Fight The Power, subway art and the political crisis in Georgia. We look at the lives of some of the most famous leaders, artists, scientists and personalities in history, including: visionary architect Antoni Gaudi and the design of the Sagrada Familia; Michael Jordan and his bespoke Nike trainers; Princess Diana at the Taj Mahal; and Görel Hanser, manager of legendary Swedish pop band Abba on the influence they've had on the music industry. You can learn all about fascinating and surprising stories, such as the time an Iraqi journalist hurled his shoes at the President of the United States in protest of America's occupation of Iraq; the creation of the Hollywood commercial that changed advertising forever; and the ascent of the first Aboriginal MP.(Photo: Dinner for One. Every New Year, Many set out with new resolutions, let's consider a journey of health this year. Let's keep those resolutions and goals past February, when 70% loose their momentum. A great way to start your year, is with a physical, blood laboratories, saliva testing for hormones, EKG, Ultrasound of the heart and carotid dopplers. Consider starting a lifestyle check today! Ask your physician… We continue our prayers over Damar Hamlin, whom we many continue to speculate what could have happened. Let's be reminded our heart health can be in our control. Damar had a very rare incident, especially if it was the impact that caused the arrythmia, reports show 20 incidents a year of Commotio cordis. A highly unusal impact to the heart. Young people of all ages when entering sports are recommended to have an EKG, another uncommon arrythmia is called Wolffe Parkinson White Syndrome, which is an electrical dysfunction that is commonly seen on an EKG. So this year, we hope you take the time to start the year new, take the time to have a physical with your doctor, establish a relationship with your doctor and dentist so you can on prevention instead of reaction to illness. Did you know that most diseases can be seen in the gum tissue and mouth. We will discuss more in the next podcasts. HAPPY NEW YEAR…It's all about the New year, new me…Isn't it? Is your new year's resolution to improve your health and lose weight? In this episode, I'll be diving into why we struggle so much at keeping these resolutions and what you can do to make them actually STICK AND SEE LASTING RESULTS!!! Perhaps you'd like to make some helpful changes for your health and well-being, but you want to do it without the rigidity, futility, overwhelm, or joylessness that comes along with dieting? You'd like to actually STICK with it this time around and not “fall off the wagon” and feel like a failure. WHY do we do this to ourselves EVERY New Year? I'm about to tell you why along with the 5 reasons WHY we find these resolutions don't stick. These 5 reasons are very common and easy to “fix”..don't worry, I've got your back.
Every New Year, people around the world engage in making New Year's resolutions. In this incredible message, Ps. Jurgen teaches us how to tap into the ancient wells of conquering a faith that sits as a reservoir for all believers in Christ.

But only to fail come the following month of February, by March you don't even bother getting your gym kit out but April who is gym is there guy down the road called Jim.Why do you do this, because of the stories you ar telling yourself, the ideas about yourself that keep rushing through your mind, and the self-loathing that you embark on yourself on a daily basis? it's really quite simple, just stop it, stop being so mean to yourself. Evoke a different attitude and a bit more love.In this podcast, I go into the ins and outs of why we fail so many times. For more information and should you want to contact me you can find me atwww.disreeshaw.comEhttps://disreeshaw.com/https://www.instagram.com/disreeshawofficial/For information on online courses please register at the website

Well, your hosts James and Joe, along with returning guests Adrienne, Arco, and Keith have some pop-culture dreams for the new year. No matter how they feel about the institution of royalty, almost everyone likes Denmark's Queen Margrethe, who is celebrating 50 years on the throne this week. Every New Year's Eve, the streets of Denmark go quiet as the Queen makes her annual televised speech to her subjects. I find the speeches pretty much the same every year, they're about being kind to each other, taking care of the environment, and such. The real entertainment is in the Queen's wardrobe - she designs her own clothes, and often chooses rather un-Danishly bright colors - and whether she'll get her carefully written note cards mixed up. Every year she thanks the Danish military for its work, and every year she makes sure to shout out to the Faroe Islands and Greenland, the farthest flung parts of her kingdom. And she ends every annual speech with “GUD BEVARE DANMARK” – God Save Denmark. The Queen is the head of the Danish state church, and the Danish state – she still signs all the laws, including the specific law that made me a citizen. But the Queen is also an artist. She paints, and draws, and has designed stage sets for the Royal Ballet.
Health, fitness, and body image seems to be flooding my social media accounts this week. Every New Year this happens, so I wanted us to jump into the topic of body image here. I hope that you're joining us today with a heart prepared to be both encouraged and challenged as we approach these topics with a Biblical perspective that may cause some preconceived notions to shift. I'm so honored to have one of my mentors from the last 12 years is joining us today. Her wisdom has shaped my Biblical worldview and the way that I study God's Word. Cindy Zuidema was my Bible Study Fellowship teaching leader for many years and I'm so grateful for the truth she has poured into me. Every New Year's Eve, we try to stay awake until midnight, to be there to herald a new year and time in life. But this tradition hints at an even deeper spiritual reality—the call to spiritual wakefulness. What does it mean to stay awake? How do we do so? Pat reflects on what the Gospel teaches us about these questions!

Every New Year, we are tempted to run down the rabbit trail of self-improvement. What if, instead of trying to change ourselves, we chose to embrace the design God integrated into our DNA? What if instead of, “new year, new you”, you chose to “do you in '22”.
Yesterday was the New Year of 2022. It's hard to believe that 2021 is nearly gone. Yet, here we are at the end of the year once again! Every New Year, I ask myself 13 questions. In this episode, I'm sharing those questions with all of you. These questions can play a huge part in taking you to the next level. No matter who you are, if you want to level up, asking these questions is the way to get there. We've all heard of year-end reflections. However, I think reflecting needs to go beyond just reflecting. It needs to include asking questions. In particular, it needs to include asking these 13 questions. At the end of the day, New Years is really about reflecting on how we lived our lives over the past year. We live in such a fast-paced and busy world that stopping every now and then in this way is crucial. We must take the time to focus on the right things by first reflecting on (and letting go of) the wrong things. Tune in to spend 30 minutes doing just that with me. In this episode, you will hear: How to limit the toxicity in your life. On a scale from 1-10, how do you feel overall about the past year? Why we should reflect on our most memorable days each month. What would you have done differently this year and what did you learn from that experience? The importance of reflecting on significant events in the past year. How have you changed and grown over the past year? Why you should do a spiritual reflection. Why you should list out your top 10 accomplishments or highlights from the past year. How to reflect in your relationships. Subscribe and Review Please share this podcast with your friends and family. Our beliefs really do drive our behavior and you are born for more. Healthy eating is not this concept of ONLY eating "healthy" or "good-for-you" foods. Instead, it's an approach that involves having a "healthy" relationship with food in which the person includes ALL foods in his or her diet both in moderation and in balance without any self-imposed restrictions. If your New Year's resolution for '21 is to "Eat Healthier to Lose '20' Pounds" and you've already created a psychological list of foods to avoid or foods you "can't" have, you just may be joining the 92% of the other Americans who won't achieve their goals during the New Year. Why? Because it's not sustainable [or healthy] and you're focusing on a level that has very little impact on weight change. If you're wanting to take your health and results to the next level this New Year, it's critical you don't make this one costly fat loss mistake. But that's only ONE New Year's mistake you could make during this New Year. Want the insider secrets on four other critical fat loss mistakes you don't want to make in 2021? If so, this episode is for you! Every New Year comes with a new opportunity to change but only if you start off in the right way. Listen in to learn how! Welcome back to the Neuroscience Meets Social and Emotional Learning Podcast EPISODE #113, with Troy Busot, the Founder of Athlinks[i], the world’s largest racing database with a mission of making it easier for people to race more often and have more fun in the process. Watch this interview on YouTube here. With this episode, you will learn: How Troy Busot, the founder of Athlinks.com helped Andrea to launch her business 10 years ago. How Troy took an idea, and created the world's largest racing database. The Secret to launching a business, or any idea. The importance of failing fast, identifying and fixing deficiencies. Hello and Welcome back! I’m Andrea Samadi, a former educator who has been fascinated with learning the science behind high performance strategies in schools, sports and the workplace, for the past 20 plus years. Our initial goal with this podcast was to close the gap recent surveys show exists in our workforce where 58 percent of employers say college graduates aren’t adequately prepared for today’s workforce, with a particular gap in social and emotional skills. Research shows that social-emotional skills like social awareness, self-regulation, and growth mindset (the skills that we covered early in the podcast episodes) are crucial to college and career readiness. The outcomes of developing these intelligences are vast as they impact our performance, leadership, personal excellence, time management, and decision-making. And if you have been listening to our podcast for some time, you will know that we’ve uncovered that if we want to improve our social and emotional skills, and experience success in our work and personal lives, it all begins with putting our brain health first. We’ve mentioned that daily exercise is one of the top 5 health staples that’s a known brain-health and Alzheimer’s prevention strategy, from our episode #87[ii] helping us to take our results, productivity and health to these higher levels. Our guest today, Troy Busot, has always impressed me by the way that he and his family took their health and fitness seriously, and his dedication to his health, spilled over into his work life, as a successful entrepreneur. He’s my old neighbor—his family used to live directly across the street from me, but they moved to another state, and now like many of us, we stay in touch via social media where we recently connected on some of his latest missions and to brainstorm ideas with our podcasts. Not only is Troy the CEO of Athlinks.com, but he also runs the Athlinks Podcast, a high-quality podcast that features interviews with athletes around the world as they prepare for events. I will tell you more about Troy, the company he founded, his podcast, and how he gave me that push that I needed to launch my business, achieveit360.com over 10 years ago, but first, let me tell you about what he invented. He’s the founder of Athlinks--the best way to track all of your race results in one place. Basically it’s a Results Database for those who compete in races. Each year, over 40 million athletes in the U.S. cross a finish line at an endurance event, but with the recent Pandemic, these numbers have been reduced to under 10 million, but you get the picture. There’s a lot of people who train long and hard, pushing themselves to these higher limits. For most people, it's not about the medals. It's about the results. It's about getting better each race - going faster, going farther, beating a rival, or lifting up a loved one. It’s about the hours, minutes, and seconds scribbled on the back of a race bib or on a row in a spreadsheet. Athlinks (or my old neighbor Troy) set out to make capturing those rewards as simple as typing your name into a search box. This was his idea, and he’s the mastermind behind this company, who pulls in times for running races, triathlon, swimming, cycling, mountain biking ... pretty much any timed endurance sport that you can think of - if they can find the results, they will add them to the database and link them to their members' accounts. So how did Troy help me to launch my business idea? I realized that after producing 113 episodes of the podcast now, I haven’t done one episode on exactly what we do at Achieveit360.com. If you ever make it to the end of our episode, you’ll hear the trailer telling you to go there, and you will find books, and tools for schools and the workplace. I will do another episode explaining where we began with our work, and where we are going now with our workshops to help you integrate the simple neuroscience into your school or workplace. Stay tuned for that. But first, let’s go back to 2012/13. This was a year before I partnered with AZ Department of Education with the Character and Leadership program, Level Up, that you can see through my website, making my first huge step forward towards the vision I had for making an impact with education, character, SEL and leadership. The vision that began when I worked with Bob Proctor seminars in the late 1990s, when I watched him change the lives of 12 teens in a matter of months with topics that mirrored what we now know to be called Social and Emotional Learning. Troy was and I’d say still is a very serious businessman. He was always working on something, not much time wasting going on when I saw him. But he would always say in passing, “If you ever want me to come over, and brainstorm where you are with your business, and where you want to go, I’d be happy to do that” and when he offered, he said it with a serious tone, that made me realize he wanted to help, and I knew he meant it. He didn’t mean, “Hey, we are kicking back and chilling out, come and join us, and throw out your ideas.” He meant business, and had this look in his eye that he knew I needed some direction. At the time I was taking all of the content I had created, and was putting it online, creating an online portal www.achieveit360.org where you can see our courses for students and educators. I was working with a young kid out of Chicago, whose not a young kid anymore, but back then he was teaching me how to create a website, to code, and everything I needed to know about the online world, and he was a high school student at the time. Once I had my content online, I was ready. So one day I said to Troy, “I’d love to take you up on that brainstorming session” and it was the end of the year when many people were in the middle of their holiday celebrations, and he asked “What are you doing on New Year’s Eve?” I almost laughed out loud, because EVERY New Year that I can remember, was always focused on planning and firming up the following year, not going to parties or fancy dinners. It’s always been a time to reflect, gather new ideas, and “Sharpen the Saw” for the New Year, so I wasn’t surprised that the founder of Athlinks was doing exactly the same thing. Troy came over after dinner time, and we sat at my dining room table and brainstormed some ideas of the vision I saw, where I was starting from and where I wanted to go. Troy offered some ideas, but the most valuable information I remember, was some of the leaders he told me to follow. He said “You have got to follow and read Gary Vee’s book Crush It[iii]” and I did, and it really helped me to create the work ethic that I have today. It was a serious meeting, no joking around. He let me know that he has seen far too many people never start something, and he hoped that our meeting would give me a push to get moving. It did. It was shortly after this meeting that I presented my ideas to AZ Department of Education when they opened up the doors for new vendors to provide their services for a Character Education Matching Grant. We would end up being one of the preferred providers chosen for this grant that went from 2014-2020, and this is where everything began for me, working for myself, outside of the corporate world, with just an idea. I wanted to bring Troy on the podcast because many people I know have been forced to start something new maybe because their job was eliminated, or they’ve just had some sort of shift with what they are doing, and if you were like me, I had my idea just about ready to go, and hearing from someone who had launched something successful, gave me the insight I needed get going, and learn how to quickly fail forward (which we did). I hope you find this time with Troy as helpful as I did many years ago, as he shares exactly how he launched Athlinks, and his vision for the future. Here’s Troy Busot! Welcome Troy! Thank you so much for coming on the podcast today, and also for helping me to launch my business almost 10 years ago. I don’t remember exactly when it was, but it was before I had partnered with AZ Department of Education in 2014. I’m just curious, what do you remember about coming over to the house that day? Q1: Getting back to your work Troy, where did your vision for starting Athlinks begin and how did you go from an idea, to building such a successful database that’s used by so many people? Q2: Can you tell me more about the programs and services that you offer through Athlinks? Other than a database, what is there? Q3: I haven’t raced since I used to do these mini triathlons back in Toronto when I was a lifeguard, so I know there’s no information next to my name, but some of my high school friends are avid racers. How can they use the info in Athlinks to help them? Q4: We’ve been friends for years, but I just started to notice you posting on Instagram about something you’re doing called 50 Chasing 50. I had no idea we were both chasing 50, but now I know! What month are you turning 50? Q4B) I also know that putting health first has been a huge mission of mine, especially as we uncovered that Exercise is one of the top 5 health staples and Alzheimer’s Prevention strategies. I don’t know anyone chasing 50 who doesn’t want to arrive there healthy. What exactly is 50 Chasing 50? Q5: You’ve launched a successful business, sold it, and the last time we spoke, you mentioned that you had your eye on another vision. That’s the entrepreneurial bug at work, I recognize it! After 50, what’s your vision for yourself? Q6: Anything I have missed? Final thoughts? Thank you very much Troy first of all, for offering your time, ideas and suggestions that launched my business Achieveit360.com in the early days, and for coming on the podcast to share your vision with our listeners. I’m so grateful that we met and have remained friends. Looking forward to learning more about 50 Chasing 50, and watching your success well beyond this next milestone. Thanks Troy. But if 2021 is going to be a better year, it will not be because things are easier or because we get everything we want. The way to find full life this year is in giving ourselves fully to Christ, community, and mission.

But as coalition forces withdraw, many interpreters feel increasingly vulnerable to militias who see them as traitors. Every New Year brings a level of transition. God starts to speak to us about doing new things. However, doing the new usually requires us to let off the old. This morning I am reflecting on how there is a level of fear we feel when transiting to something new. And if we don't overcome that fear, we will miss out on new levels of success from the transition. Links: Join | Partner

Every New Year’s Eve we hope the next year will be a reset and that this will finally be a “good year.” Unfortunately life doesn’t work that way. The good and the bad always come at us at the same time. Even though we can’t guarantee a ”good year,” Jesus offers us something better… a new beginning in the middle of our real life. Every New Year, thousands of people head to the gym to get in to the best shape of their lives. They are willing to put the hard work in at the gym, but then come home and continue to eat the same unhealthy meals over and over again. In this episode, Chris & Ryan break down that it takes to see some real results. 80% of your results come from your diet, and diet doesn't always mean eating less. There are different ways to be successful with your diet and for some people you may actually need to eat more to be achieve your desired results. Remember weight is just a number and it's how you look and feel that really matters.
Every New Year it seems we begin brand new practices and programs in an effort to “be better.” This year, instead of trying something new, the Faith Lakeside family will be continuing on the path that God has clearly laid before us. It’s a New Year, but our Mission stays the same! The post New Year, Renewed Missioon appeared first on Faith Community Church Lakeside.
As the New Year rolls in and everyone is excited about making resolutions and becoming a better person, I feel like there is a huge missed opportunity. Instead of announcing bold new goals to the world for 2020 that have no basis in reality, there is something more strategic you and I can do. In fact it's a simple question that you should ask yourself (and your spouse if you're married). It's a question my wife and I ask each year as we wind down and look ahead to the next 12 months. And it's a question that has so much potential to change your life.
Happy New Year, Foodie! I hope you had a wonderful holiday. I'm feeling nostalgic today. Every New Year my grandfather would make Black Eyed Peas and Stewed Tomatoes. Today, I'm taking his traditional dish and doing something different. We're making Crispy Black-Eyed Pea fritters with a smokey tomato compote. This dish is 100% vegan and makes about 5 to 6 fritters. Let's get into it! Ingredients 1 15 oz can of black-eyed peas 1 cup of whole-wheat panko bread crumbs 2 tablespoons of olive oil 2 tablespoons of minced garlic Salt and Pepper to Taste For the compote 1 large tomato diced or 1 can of tomato paste 3 tablespoons of liquid smoke a pinch of salt 1 tablespoon of sugar 1 teaspoon of cornstarch Water or veggie broth as needed to stretch it out. Today’s show is brought to you by film students Connor and Annalise Tazz EPISODE 51 – 5 OF THE BEST AND LOOKING FORWARD Intro I can hardly believe that I’m able to sit down, at last, to record this show because it’s been such a long tough journey this season. Today’s show not only marks the end of season 3 but it also celebrates the first 50 episodes and a NEW YEAR with new hopes and possibilities. Albert Einstein said Learn from yesterday, live for today and so I will be looking back in this episode and choosing 5 of my favourite pieces of advice, tips and tricks from the first 50 shows to bring to you today and then looking forward to another year and another decade, which if we seize control of it, and utilise the skills and advice I offer in this podcast - will be a very successful and fulfilling one for all of us. Learning the lessons of the past allows you to walk boldly in the light without running the risk of stumbling in the darkness. This is the way it's supposed to work. M. Russell Ballard UNQUOTE Despite some ups and downs for me, this year has overall been a very positive one. I should probably cover why I said I was going to release 18 x 10 minute episodes this season and then promptly went ahead with 18 shows which were about 20 minutes or considerably longer. Well, I have to admit that I got myself into a lot of trouble with that one and the truth is that the topics I have been tackling just didn’t fit into a 10-minute format. I quickly realised, and this is a topic for a future show perhaps, that I had underestimated my timings and the amount of work that I was taking on but as I am a man of my word, who had promised 18 episodes this season, I soldiered on. Season 3 contains just over 8 hours of original content, where I’d originally been aiming for 3. It’s put a real strain on my time and resources but in the end, I feel that it’s been worthwhile. With all that said though – lessons have been learned! The other thing that went well off target this year was my own plans. I had used Jinny Ditzler’s BEST YEAR YET book to STRATEGISE my year ahead and set out at the start of the year with a ten-point plan to achieve things. By the time I got to my 3rd deadline I had unfortunately been derailed though – I talk about that in my EST LAID PLANS episode though so I won't go into detail. Jinny says that “The principal value of our mistakes and failures is our ability to learn from them”. This is backed up by Napoleon Hill in my LAW OF SUCCESS MINI-SERIES when he says that we should reframe failures, in our minds, as TEMPORARY SETBACKS. As I covered in detail during episode 34 - BEST LAID PLANS, I made a lot of mistakes this year, but learn from them I did. The title of the book YOUR BEST YEAR YET is very clever though as using Jinny’s system every year can be BETTER THAN THE ONE BEFORE. I can now move past and learn from my mistakes and make a new plan to achieve things in the year ahead. 2020 will be my best year yet, and when 2021 comes around I’ll give it the same focused effort as the last. My objectives will change as I move forward but EVERY NEW YEAR that arrives WILL BE MY BEST and I will continue to adapt and develop to achieve great things. I fully expect to be making more mistakes but I will build on them and likely report on them here, as they occur. BTW this is exactly the time of year you should check it out too so go to episode 16 to listen to last year’s NEW YEAR SPECIAL - YOUR BEST YEAR YET to find out more. There are many other factors that have contributed to the overall success if 2019 and I’ve had a few great wins along the way. Hitting 50 episodes was a tremendous landmark with this show, but I also had great developments in my personal and family life and have had great times with my dog Angus. I’ve directed fights on 4 feature films, a few theatre productions too, maybe 3 or 4 of them and a couple of short films and on I think 41 episodes of various high-level television shows. Despite a few hard knocks financially and spiritually that resulted in my giving up on making films I have come out the other side with a year I can call a success! Lesson All great achievements require time. Maya Angelou UNQUOTE Well passing the 50 episode point certainly feels like a milestone and no mistake, and today I want to bring to you 5 of my favourite tips for productivity from those first 50 episodes. These are in a kind of rough order for the sake of an exciting (ahem – or at least informative) episode, but to my mind, they are all valuable. I’ll call them my favourites but in truth, I have many many more that if I had time I would list here. The best years of your life are the ones in which you decide your problems are your own. You do not blame them on your mother, the ecology, or the president. You realize that you control your own destiny. Albert Ellis UNQUOTE 1st on my list is what I talk about in episode 1 of this show and it’s a switch in your head that needs to get flipped if you are to get yourself out of the mundane rut of directionless uncertainty that you find yourself in. What I am talking about is developing a HIGHER LEVEL OF THINKING which some call INTELLIGENT THOUGHT and getting yourself into a headspace where you can work ON your life and career at the same time that you find yourself living and working IN it. I’ll say that again - Getting yourself into a headspace where you can work ON your life and career at the same time that you find yourself living and working IN it. This realisation - that WE CAN DIRECTLY ASSESS AND TAKE CONTROL OF OUR LIVES AND CAREERS instead of just floating along through life like a passenger was the kick-off point I had into this whole world of productivity. I don’t know where I first heard that phrasing but it’s not really my words, or maybe it is a little, but as I always try to credit where it is due I must say that I’m pilfering someone else’s ideas here. If up until now you have just been FOLLOWING THE RANDOM FLOW OF YOUR LIfe and doing your best to make sense of it, without actually realising that you may have to STOP AND STEP OUT OF YOUR OWN LIFE AND WORK even just briefly on occasion to assess what you have been doing, and HOW THINGS ARE WORKING OUT FOR YOU, then you are not getting the best out of life. Stopping every now and again and looking at your levels of success or failure, what you may have learned from those failures and what might be the next steps to take on your journey through life is absolutely possible, but only if you flick that switch and decide to take back control. I invite you now, and if you are listening already to this podcast you are already likely on this wavelength, but I invite you that aren’t to step up and join us. Join those of us who have engaged the process of HIGH-LEVEL THINKING IN THEIR LIFE AND CAREER AND TAKE BACK CONTROL. HIGH-LEVEL THINKING will help you to avoid the skirmishes, stop wasting your time and mental energy on the unimportant and focus on the bigger picture and the bigger win. Sometimes the smallest step in the right direction ends up being the biggest step of your life. Emma Stone UNQUOTE And so the 2nd on my list for today is an extension of this. It is a topic I’ve covered in a number of my episodes but most recently in episode 40 THE LAW OF SUCCESS part 1, and that’s the lesson specifically relating to having A DEFINITE CHIEF AIM IN LIFE. I talk about this quite regularly as in productivity terms it’s important. Let’s not take forever to cover this, you can just listen or re-listen to episodes 40-45 for the very full and incredibly valuable LAW OF SUCCESS IN 16 LESSONS miniseries to discover more - BUT the point in HAVING A PLAN AND A STRATEGY, is simply that if you don’t know where you are going, you are possibly never going to get there. If you do know what you want out of life, you will know what to say NO to and what to prioritise in what lies ahead. With a sense of purpose comes focus and certainty. Now I fully understand that it may take you a bit of time to decide what you want to do with your life, but you can still make plans for 5 years from now, 1 year from now or even just to achieve something you want by the end of next week or today. It’s also perfectly possible, that as your life proceeds and your priorities change, that you will intelligently choose to change your direction in life somewhere down the line, and that’s okay too. If you know what you want to achieve though, you can get to it far more easily and more directly, WITHOUT DISTRACTION, and without finding out that you’re actually working to achieve someone else’s life dreams and goals instead of your own. That way leads to MISERY. Procrastination is the bad habit of putting off until the day after tomorrow what should have been done the day before yesterday. Napoleon Hill UNQUOTE 3rd on today’s list is a really simple anti-procrastination rule that I use every day. It’s from episode 9 FOUR GREAT HACKS TO AVOID PROCRASTINATION and it’s the ONE-TOUCH RULE. The one-touch rule is simply that YOU MUST PROCESS AND COMPLETE A TASK THE FIRST TIME YOU TOUCH IT. It was formalised by Productivity consultant Ann Gomez who explains that “It's a simple trick to help you batch your work into scheduled, focus blocks: you won't open an email until you're ready to give it your full attention, or you'll decline to accept your co-worker’s rough draft until later when you know you'll have the time to sit down and do it.” I have a difficulty on occasion with overwhelm, which was talked about in the November mailbag episode. Sometimes I just can’t handle all of the communications and problems that come my way as they come in, so I have to prioritise what I do tackle. See episode 3 for more on PRIORITISING btw. Once they are prioritised I won’t even look at or consider the non-pertinent stuff – actually sometimes I will if I am NOT FEELING OVERWHELMED and they are very quick to deal with, and that is the TWO MINUTE RULE also covered in episode 9. The reason I don’t open non-pertinent stuff though is because I have systemised myself to use the ONE TOUCH RULE. If I can’t complete a communication in one sitting, if I am about to start a task that I know I cannot finish right there and then, I WON’T START IT. Sometimes, if it’s urgent, I will reschedule my day to ensure I CAN finish things in one sitting, or I’ll split tasks into two or three sections so that I can at least complete a defined bit of it, but generally speaking, I don’t like to have what I call OPEN DOORS in my life. Those are unfinished pieces of work or communications or personal matters that I will have to pick up the pieces of later on. That just clogs up my brain and messes me up. If you find you have a task to do that you know you can’t complete in the time you have or that isn’t urgent then don’t touch it until you know you will have time to complete it. The ONE TOUCH RULE is a very powerful weapon in the productivity-ists arsenal. 4th in my list of favourites is PROTECTING YOUR MENTAL ENERGY – that’s all of episode 18. It’s something I first heard discussed by one of my favourite productivity experts ISAIAH HANKEL. In his awesome book, THE SCIENCE OF INTELLIGENT ACHIEVEMENT he says that “Mental energy is the world’s hottest commodity. People are going to try to steal it, drain it, and suck it up every second you’re awake. Yet very few of us protect it. Few of us know how.” Mental energy is what I was thinking about protecting with the ONE TOUCH RULE when I talked about not opening too many doors. My brain simply can’t adequately cover all the bases if it is constantly getting pulled from pillar to post by too many worries, too many commitments and too many open or unfinished tasks. When you are trying to remember dates and special occasions, and loading all of the commitments of a busy modern life and work onto your brain, you will find that you very quickly begin to drop the ball. You must PROTECT YOUR MENTAL ENERGY AT ALL COSTS though as you only have a finite amount of it to use each day. “Our fatigue is often caused not by work, but by worry, frustration and resentment.” – Dale Carnegie UNQUOTE And that fatigue he talks about is a waning of your day's supply of mental energy. I regularly utilise brain dumps, that’s getting all of the stuff that’s in your head out and onto a piece of paper or a whiteboard so that you can sort through it. You can then eliminate the unimportant and the non-priority junk that’s in there and focus on the important and the urgent stuff instead. You can also use CALENDARS and SCHEDULING SOFTWARE to remember dates etc and just take the burden of remembering all of that stuff off your mind. When you do this you’ll find yourself functioning more EFFECTIVELY and EFFICIENTLY and with FAR LESS STRESS and ANXIETY. Protecting your mental energy is one of my favourite shows so if you haven’t yet had a listen, then get in there. Accuracy is the twin brother to honesty and inaccuracy to dishonesty. Nathaniel Hawthorne UNQUOTE My final choice for today is ACCURATE THOUGHT. This is lesson 11 in my LAW OF SUCCESS mini-series and I’ve flipped over to this as time and again I see problems arise and great swathes of time wasted by woolly, unclear, lazy, or just mistaken thought. The lesson on ACCURATE THOUGHT teaches us that we must separate facts from MERE INFORMATION. It goes on to say that we must then separate our FACTS into TWO CLASSES just as I talked about a minute ago. These classes are the IMPORTANT and the UNIMPORTANT, or, the RELEVANT and the IRRELEVANT. Napoleon Hill explains that FACTS WHICH WILL AID YOU to any extent whatsoever in THE ATTAINMENT OF YOUR DEFINITE CHIEF AIM are IMPORTANT and RELEVANT; and that all that you cannot use is UNIMPORTANT and IRRELEVANT. Developing a habit of accurate thought I believe is essential if we are to be productive and here is why. Peter Drucker says “It is fundamentally the confusion between effectiveness and efficiency that stands between DOING THE RIGHT THINGS and DOING THINGS RIGHT. There is surely nothing quite so useless as doing with great efficiency that which should not be done at all.” It’s a quote I’ve used several times before, but In the lesson Hill talks of “the law of evidence” and “the object of this law is to get at the facts. Any judge can proceed with justice to all concerned if they have the facts upon which to base their judgment, but they may play havoc with innocent people if they circumvent the law of evidence and reach a conclusion or judgment that is based upon hearsay information.” This world that we live and especially data gleaned from the internet is a minefield of misinformation. It affects me in several ways: For example - If I put up a quote and I have the time, I will investigate whether it is correctly attributed or not. I’d say that one in every 20 or so quotes that I put up IS INCORRECTLY attributed in my online reference materials. This might be regarded as a small thing but at the other end of the scale we have, I think a bigger problem, and that it’s what is known as SPONSORED CONTENT. It is amazing how many people there are who are "honest" when it is profitable to them but find myriads of facts to justify themselves in following a dishonest course when that course seems to be more profitable or advantageous. Napoleon Hill UNQUOTE Paid sponsorship is making it near impossible to find a balanced opinion out there. Reviews that represent themselves at a glance as TRUTH, are very very often in fact just commercial content that is designed to dupe us. South Park does a great skit on this where they describe marketing in terms of SkyNet in the Terminator Universe where the commercials adapt and become more intelligent in order to infiltrate our lives. Sorting THE TRUTH from THE LIES in today’s world is increasingly difficult. The trouble is if you believe the hype and the misinformation which we are manipulated to understand as truth, that you will find yourself wasting time and money and energy on stuff that later proves to be a waste of all of that. You may also find too that you have unknowingly have fallen into a marketing funnel and been deliberately led away from the truth which you are seeking. Getting to the facts in today’s society is just immensely difficult, but is worth the effort. There’s another side to accuracy of thought - and that is being ACCURATE AND TRUTHFUL TO YOURSELF. I see people faking their way through their lives, and I don’t actually have a problem with a FAKE IT TILL YOU MAKE IT STRATEGY if it works for you, but what I see sometimes is someone starting to believe the bullsh*t they have been inflicting on other people and that is when this becomes a problem. If, as you move forward with a FAKE IT TILL YOU MAKE IT STRATEGY, you lose your ACCURACY OF THOUGHT and START TO BELIEVE YOUR OWN HYPE, then you are getting yourself into no end of trouble. I’ve seen actors telling people they are in a movie, for it to be released later on and seen just as liars or fakes when they are clearly not in it. I’ve seen writers convincing themselves that they have relationships with high flying Hollywood producers only for their work never to get made, because they missed the real opportunities that were passing them by as they imagined themselves to be “better than that” and I’ve seen filmmakers who will tell you that they have a definite financier for their film crumble under my questions about it, when I discover that they don’t have anything in writing and they have just convinced themselves that it is true. Napoleon Hill helps us to get to the facts when we are faced by things like this, by asking one simple question. How do you know this? Under scrutiny, those who believe their own hype, but who have exaggerated their position, fall heavily on their own swords. Difficult though it may be, occasionally you have to ask that awkward question, in order that you do not get drawn into a world of false hope. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve wasted my time and energy on something that later proves to be someone’s fantasy. Even this year I pushed for a hard guarantee on something I had doubt was going to happen, and that despite many assurances just didn’t come to be. As an ACCURATE THINKER, it becomes your DUTY to avail yourself of the facts, even though you must go out of your way to get them and ask those difficult questions. If however, you permit yourself to be swayed to and fro by all manner of information that comes to your way, you will never become an accurate thinker and you will be duped time and again by some seemingly credible peoples woolly brained fantasies or downright lies and manipulation tactics. ACCURACY OF THOUGHT combined with HIGH-LEVEL THINKING allows you to intelligently assess virtually any situation you find yourself in. IF YOU DO NOT THINK ACCURATELY though will be constantly distracted and likely NEVER attain your DEFINITE CHIEF AIM in life. So that’s all 5 of my for want of a better word “favourites” from the first 50 shows but if truth be told I embrace far more than this in my day today. --- *STEVE MARABOLIS said “As I look back on my life, I realize that every time I thought I was being rejected from something good, I was actually being re-directed to something better. We stand now at the precipice of a new beginning. At least it always feels that way when a new year comes about, but our NEW YEAR’s RESOLUTIONS are fleeting and very quickly begin to slip away as life starts to disrupt them. If you truly want to achieve things in the year ahead, then you need to know where you want to be and you need to plan for how to get there. Achieving your EVENTUAL DEFINITE CHIEF AIM in life will involve strategising and working hard to make it all happen. Last year’s NEW YEAR SPECIAL goes into great detail about this so if you want to learn about Jinny Ditzler's system for achieving things in the year ahead and achieving you own BEST YEAR YET then please go back to episode 16 and have a listen. Alan Watts once said that No amount of anxiety makes any difference to anything that is going to happen so if you have fears and anxieties about what lies ahead don’t allow them to disrupt your flow or your focus in life and work and family. The new year stands before us, like a chapter in a book, waiting to be written and I say that the pen for writing it sits firmly in your grasp. Call To Action This season I spent a lot of time creating a six-part series called the LAW OF SUCCESS IN 16 LESSONS based on the book by Napoleon Hill. In it, you will find a system so powerful that it cannot be understated. It’s not a short listen though, it’s a full 3 hours of content spread over the 6 episodes that will involve you really engaging your mind in what it teaches. Your call to action is to go back and listen or re-listen to that series which is covered in episodes 40 through 45. This will give you a very powerful start on the road to achieving success, in whatever form that might take, in the year ahead. Ending “If we fail to adapt, we fail to move forward.” John Wooden I wish you the very best for 2020 and I hope that this podcast will continue to aid you on your journey. Take control of your destiny and use that higher level of thinking which I talk about. With that, you will be able to move forward with a certainty of purpose that will propel you towards your dreams and goals. REMEMBER TOO, THAT A NEW YEAR CAN START FOR YOU AT ANY TIME OF YOUR CHOOSING. If you are listening to this at another point in the year and decide you need to make a change for a better life and start again, whether it’s January the 1st or July the 22nd, you can do it. I said a few weeks ago that this show will be back at the start of March. I had miscalculated that actually. It will be back at the end of March, roughly 3 months from today with a new 12 part series which is possibly going to consist of 6 interview shows and 6 standard episodes. I’ll put out a couple of inbetweenisodes to keep you sweet in the interim too. In the meantime, I can highly recommend a few shows for you to check out during the offseason hiatus. There’s great filmmaking interview shows like THE FILMMAKER’S PODCAST, HOW THEY DID IT FILMMAKING, THE REEL FILTHY PODCAST and of course INDIE FILM HUSTLE with Alex Ferrari. If you are interested in learning more about podcasting AND WANT TO START YOUR OWN PERHAPS then please try Scotland based PODCRAFT or the US-based shows THE AUDACITY TO PODCAST or THE SCHOOL OF PODCASTING. I can also highly recommend THE STEPHEN ROWN SHOW which is a great listen and if you need a productivity fix please check out Julian’s show PRODUCTIVITY MATTERS. In this four-part series, we want to provide Biblical advice and practical tools to help us create the right changes in our lives and to ensure our progress sticks. In part three, Pastor Pete talked about the importance of keeping our lives aligned with our purpose.

Every New Year, millions of Americans take time to write resolutions about who they would like to become or what they would like to do in the next 365 days. Researchers at the University of Scranton suggest that only 8 percentof people keep their resolutions. According to U.S. News & World Report, 80 percentof those resolutions fail by the second week of February. What if we’re chasing the wrong thing? What if we need new habits, not New Year’s resolutions? That’s the question raised by Justin Whitmel Earley’s new book, The Common Rule: Habits of Purpose for an Age of Distraction, which InterVarsity Press will publish on February 5th. According to him, “We are all living according to a specific regimen of habits, and those habits shape most of our life.” He goes on to propose eight purposeful habits Christians should develop to lead spiritually focused lives. In Episode 163 of the Influence Podcast, Influence magazine executive editor George P. Wood, talks to Justin about his new book, those eight habits, and what to do when we fail. Justin Whitmel Earley is the creator of The Common Rule, a program of habits designed to form us in the love of God and neighbor. If his name sounds familiar, that’s because he wrote “Habits of the Tech-Wise Heart,”the cover story of the November-December 2018 issue of Influence. He is also a mergers and acquisitions lawyer in Richmond, Virginia, who previously spent several years in China as a missionary. Every New Year provides a fertile breeding ground for people to wake up and set goals. However, most fail. In fact 8 out of 10 new year’s resolutions go un met. So many people fail that it seems more common to not even set them any more. Why do people fail? What is the best formula for reaching goals? These are the important principles we discuss in this podcast. Also – there is nothing really that special about a “New Year”. Why not have that same focus and drive every day? Here is another important question for you: Can you actually articulate your goals to anyone who asks as quickly and easily as you would tell them your phone number or home address? Get to the point where your goals are so present for you that you can rattle them off like your saying own phone number. Live with them in your face every day.

Every New Year, Brittany makes a list of intentions for how to live her life in the coming year. Last year, Eric was skeptical of the process. This year, he is a willing participant. In this week's BONUS, Brittany and Eric discuss their intentions for 2019.
In December, I preached a message blessing our congregation with one of the great graces of our LORD; it is the realm of peace in the Kingdom of God. Within the realm of peace is contentment. Godliness with contentment is great gain. Every New Year, those who are discontent seek God for those things in the world which they believe will make them happy and content. It is a great art and mystery of Godliness to be content. It is the rest and peace of God in the Kingdom of God. We know when we are in it and we know when we fall out of it. When we are perplexed, anxious, discontent and frustrated in our soul, we are not content; nor or we spiritually in the realm of the Kingdom. A Christian coming to contentment is a scholar in Christ's school. There are many lessons to teach the soul to bring it to this learning, every godly mam or woman is a scholar. It cannot be said of any Christian that he is illiterate, but he is literate, a learned man, and a learned woman. The lessons that Christ teaches us to bring us to contentment are many. I mentioned I have recently found myself in the School of Pressure. I usually throw off all pressure which people or circumstances (Satan) attempt to put on me. I have been to this school before. I prayed through this week until I realized how this had blind-sided me. It was demands and expectations from other people who were discontent and projecting onto me their demands which only Jesus Christ could fulfill. Read more at http://watbradio.com/tph-one/

Every New Year we set goals and resolutions for ourselves, families, businesses and careers. The new phrase to use that represents growth mentally, spiritually, financially and personally is Level Up. In this episode, I speak on ways to ensure that you Level Up this year. No more dreaming, it is now time to put things into play!
A resolution is promise to one’s self. Every New Year many people resolve to change their lives, but it’s not only on New Year’s Day that we make these promises. Join Eldon and Ravinder for an in depth look at why resolutions generally fail for most people, and what can be done to end the cycle of broken promises. Every New Year, the cynics are quick to tell you how arbitrary all the motivational messages, resolutions, and new beginnings are. It's just another day, they grumble. And, sure, they have a point. You could start that new diet, join that new CrossFit box that just opened down the street, and finally pursue the dream job you've always wanted on March 7th, February 15th, or August 3rd. It doesn't have to be January 1st. Any day will do. The New Year is somewhat arbitrary. But we're social animals who thrive in the presence of others. We feed off the energy around us to fuel our own initiative. On some level we're always looking to what the group is doing for motivation, if not direction. The New Year presents a unique opportunity that way for all of us. Why would we not take advantage of the tailwind? Ever wonder about the down side of self improvement? Are you on the self-help bandwagon? Tis’ the season. Every New Year brings with it the hope and promise of a clean slate. Maybe you want a new bod, a new J-O-B, or a new slice of life. And these days you don’t have to look too far to get bombarded with products and services that lure you in with the promise all this…and MORE! But what happens when these messages infiltrate your brain? Marketers are pulling at your heart strings and pushing all your buttons. And before you know it, you may find yourself believing that you’re not good enough, feeling that you're flawed or even broken. Not only can this start a vicious cycle of low self worth and doubt, but it's hard to see yourself for the beautiful person you are through a filter of criticism and endless scrutiny. Don’t get me wrong. I’m a total self-help junkie. I LOVE the path of healing and enlightenment. But what I don’t like are those deeper messages we sometimes glean. So here's my New Year's message for you: I happen to think that you are perfect just the way you are – even if you want to improve yourself. In fact you are amazing because you want to do so! In this episode, I share my thoughts and strategy on what you can do to defeat those unfair and untrue messages that are flying at you at warp speed at this time of year. I’ll even give you 3 tips on how you can ensure you are approaching your self-improvement journey from a place of power. So take back the reigns of your own journey. Own it. And make the decision to work on you not because you need to, but because you want and deserve to!
Every New Year conversations swirl around the ideas of priorities and commitment. Jesus doesn't pull punches when he addresses these things, making it clear that the cost of discipleship is high, but the rewards are beyond anything we can imagine...if we will step into our place in God's story.
Every New Year we assemble the same group of podcasting veterans: Moe e, Matt Payne, Doc Paul Crowson and Jon Cross to discuss a specific film series and/or actor and to make lots of crude but necessary jokes. This year, due to 2016 being such a massive flaming bag of horse effluent, it was even more important that we were as silly and irreverant as possible. So, laughs will be had and sensibilities will be offended! We have a lot of sun chatting about these four early George Clooney films:Combat AcademyReturn to Horror HighReturn of the Killer TomatoesRed SurfWe learn about George's various hair styles, we talk about the life and times of Dana Hill (a lot!) are certain movies better if accompanied by old homosexual gentlemen masturbating and so much more! There's also an exciting George Clooney related quiz, we answer listeners questions, there's music and more!
Goal setting is something I’ve always reluctantly done yet secretly hated. Why? Because I do it like I’m ‘supposed to’ while secretly feeling like I know nothing, or at least very little, is ever going to materialise. Every New Year, new quarter, birthday or any other significant time, I seem to get the urge to set some kind of goal. I see a Facebook post or YouTube video about goals and guilt myself into seeing the need to set them. As if this time I’m going to somehow follow through on everything. Whether it be in business, relationships, general life stuff or even in health and fitness (I know, awesome for a former personal trainer, right?), I always seem to get some kind of motivational uplifting wind for a few days or weeks that then comes crashing back down to earth pretty soon. Don’t get me wrong, obviously I have achieved some of the goals I’ve set myself. I’m not a complete spanner. If I hadn’t, then I would never have launched any kind of business, the podcast, the Facebook group or this website. Hell, I would still be crawling around on my hands and knees because I wouldn’t have achieved the goal of learning to walk! It’s just, the usual way of setting goals, with all the boring SMART stuff, it doesn’t really interest or excite me. If it works for you then great! But I’m calling bullshit on the belief that the world will implode if we haven’t set any SMART goals. In fact, I’m going to do more than call bullshit and suggest there is a much better way of attacking this whole goal setting concept. So in this post I just want to go through five things I’ve learned and like to remember when setting goals: #1 There’s a Problem with ‘Realistic’ I suppose the largest issue I have with the whole SMART thing is that fourth letter – realistic. Yes, we’ve all seen the Will Smith video where he talks about the whole ‘realistic’ thing. If not, I’m sure you’ve seen something along similar lines. And I’m not simply going to fill this space with ball-tickling stuff about reaching for the stars. But, rather, to just be aware of what the R in SMART is conditioning us to think like. Just its presence sort of gets us to reconsider what we really want and implies that we need to re-think our initial desires. In short, it suggests that we compromise on our dreams. After all, isn’t the whole point of a goal to stretch ourselves and to take us into experiencing a new way of being? Not to simply stay almost stagnant and bore ourselves to death with what is ‘realistic’. Having the smaller, less exciting goals in place may well still be needed. For example, eating three healthy meals a day and doing this or that for your business. But, at the same time, hold onto the ‘unrealistic’, big, fucking wow goal(s) you have. Don’t hold them back. And declare them confidently without fear of ridicule. Maybe, deep down, you don’t truly believe these big ones are possible yet. But simply removing the idea that they’re impossible is a monumental start. #2 Desire, Don’t Require Something else I’ve noticed from personal experience about our mindset when it comes to goal setting is how we seem to require that they be achieved. By this I mean that we attach our happiness, our self-worth and our entire identity into achieving a certain goal. We feel like we desperately need to achieve that goal or risk being deemed unfit for society and exiled to some far off corner of the world as life as we know it comes crashing down around us. Of course, this isn’t true. And, when we think logically, we know this isn’t true. Desiring that a goal be achieved is one thing. Wanting to grow and achieve and experience new and ‘better’ things in our lives is perfectly healthy and natural. But requiring it? Needing it to happen and attaching all of our happiness on the outcome? I would suggest maybe that’s not the healthiest way of thinking. It takes us away from appreciating what’s in our lives right now. We start looking around and seeing everything that’s shit, validating the need to achieve said goal(s) and banking our hopes on doing so making everything not so shit at some point in the future. Then, even if that goal is achieved, we start thinking how much better life would be if we achieved the next one. So we start looking at this next goal and going round in a vicious circle of self-shittery. Every goal is a search for a feeling. We don’t want a million £/$/€ in the bank, we want the feeling of security and freedom (or whatever else) we think that will bring. We don’t want to be a certain body weight, we want the feeling of confidence and self-love (or whatever else) we think this will bring. So when looking to achieve a goal allow yourself the time and space to feel the feeling you wanted to feel… NOW! Not delaying it until achieving the ‘next goal’. #3 Does the Process Excite You? When I was a personal trainer, I obviously had goals for my business. I wanted to have my own studio that was the hub for real, holistic health in my local area. It wasn’t going to pander to diets or the whole negative body image shizzle going on in the media. Just promote and teach real, all-over health for people in my local area. I was going to have trainers and coaches working underneath me, a manager to manage the facility and I would be the owner who didn’t need to be there training people at all hours of the day like I had been doing as a personal trainer. Even as I write this and bring this idea back into my head now, it excites me. I’m still passionate about holistic health and the thought of having a business like this does ‘get my juices going’, so to speak. The problem that existed, however, back when I tried to do this (and would still exist if I were to try again now) is that the dream sounded awesome, but the process didn’t excite me. In fact, the process down right bored and frustrated the pants off me. In order to build this studio business, I needed clients and customers (duh!). Yet writing exercise programmes, training people in the gym at all hours of the day and doing all the niggly things that a brick and mortar business requires just did not float my boat. Add on top of this all the marketing and sales stuff and you’ve just described my business/career hell. And I wanted to somehow build my dream business on this foundation! Maybe some of the business coaches out there will tell me how I could have switched things up, delegated, systemised, etc. But I just couldn’t extract very much joy from that business at all. My point here is that the ‘end goal’, the dream or the vision for what you someday might create could be amazing. It could light your fire, float your boat, bake your pie ( :/ ) and butter your bread all in one go and at the same time. But how does the process look? What’s the journey like? What would you have to do on a regular basis in order to get there? Happiness is in the journey, not the destination. So setting goals that sound awesome, but require us to run through hell will usually end up in frustration and giving up on them at some point. My philosophy now when it comes to any goal is to, first of all, ask myself… is the juice worth the squeeze? #4 Measure Success Backwards Again, becoming aware to this concept was huge for me with regards to goal setting. It’s very easy to set goals and become discouraged pretty soon into any attempts at achieving them. Even when something positive would happen and a little goal was achieved, I would look at the bigger picture and frustrate myself because of how far I was from the ‘big goal’. For example, say you’ve been moving for a few months towards a goal of setting up a business turning £100k a year. Or that you need to lose 100lbs in weight to get to your ‘ideal’. It’s very easy to get into our own heads in situations like this and start feeling bad about how far we’ve got to go. Maybe you’re only making £20k a year or you see how much weight you’ve got to go and get discouraged. You look at all the other people much closer to their ideal weight or £100k and just feel like you’re not good enough. For some of us, it’s enough to activate that douchebag in our head again and get us feeling like total losers and that there’s no point carrying on. The goal is too far away, everyone else is better and it will take too long to get there, so there’s no point. Just crack out the Dorito’s and let’s have a Breaking Bad marathon. But this, in my opinion, comes because we’ve decided to measure our success forwards. We look at how close or far we are to the ‘end goal’ and judge our success by that. If we’re ‘too far’ away, then we deem ourselves failures. Measuring success backwards, however, is very powerful when it comes to preventing us falling into the Doritos/Breaking Bad trap. This way, we look back on what we’ve achieved over the past. Maybe you’re only at £20k in pursuit of your £100k, or you have another 100lbs to lose. But where were you a week ago? A month ago? A year ago? It’s possible that a year ago you were homeless and living out of your car. Or a year ago you had no desire to lose weight and was on your way to having to lose 200lbs instead! Of course, having that goal in the future is important. I’m not saying just remove all future goal setting and continually look back on your past. Use that goal, that vision, as something that inspires you and keeps you focussed on the actions and behaviours to take right now. But measure the success you have by how far you’ve come, not how far you have to go. #5 Include Regular Self-Review Man, oh man! Is this something that was hugely missing from my goal setting and ‘success path’ procedures. Believe it or not, I’ve only very, very recently included this as part of my weekly habits. It seems so simple and obvious, but I never thought about it previously. In the past, when it came to goal setting, I would set the goal, work out what I had to do, put a plan together and take action. Sound logical, right? And it is! It’s a pretty good way of achieving a goal. I’d get a wind of motivation and keep going for a few weeks, sometimes a couple months, only to get frustrated or bored if something wasn’t working. I’d get major pissed off, have an adult-style tantrum and completely shift direction in the hope that this next thing would be the ‘magic bullet’ to make everything in my life amazing. The critical thing that was missing here was a process of self-review. A regular meeting with myself where I look over what I’ve done, not done, what’s worked, what’s not worked, what to celebrate, what to stick with, what to drop and whether there’s room for anything else that could be useful moving forward. The magical thing about this is the ‘brain’ we’re operating in. How I used to do it was to keep going until I built up enough frustration and self-doubt that it all exploded over the sides and I’d come to a complete halt. It’s all coming from a subconscious, emotional and reactionary perspective. A regular self-review process, however, comes from a proactive, logical and conscious perspective. It’s sitting down and taking time to critically analyse our steps forward. In short, it puts ME in control. The urge to chase those ‘shiny objects’ like some fucking moronic magpie severely decreases. And I no longer feel like I’m missing out if I don’t do all the courses, read all the books and do all the things everyone on the interwebs is telling me I must do. I’m starting to do this self-review process weekly. So every Monday morning I basically just analyse the previous week and work out what should be included in this week’s action plan. I told you it was simple and obvious! Listen to the audio version of this article via the player at the top of the page, or by subscribing to the podcast on iTunes or Stitcher.
