Every other week this fall, we're airing some of Alec's favorite episodes from our archives. This week, we feature two powerhouses of the political world: Katie Porter and Lorena Gonzalez in conversations from 2021. Democrat Lorena Gonzalez served in the California State Assembly from 2013 to 2022, representing her hometown of San Diego in the 80th Assembly District. The Stanford, Georgetown, and UCLA Law School graduate dedicated her career to labor organizing before taking office, where she fought for paid sick leave, overtime for farmworkers, and protecting janitorial workers against sexual assault. Today, Gonzalez continues to work for union causes as the Executive Secretary-Treasurer of the California Labor Federation. U.S. Representative Katie Porter (CA-45) was the first Democrat ever to be elected in the traditionally conservative Orange County district in 2018. Prompted to run by Trump's 2016 win, Porter, a Yale and Harvard Law School graduate and single mom to three school-age children, quickly made a name for herself with her tough questioning of CEOs and administration officials, often using a whiteboard to lay out the facts. Porter, now in her second term, brings her experience as a law professor and consumer protection attorney to bear as she fights to end political corruption, increase government transparency, and hold leaders of both parties accountable.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Organized labor is celebrating in California, after Governor Newsom signed most of the bills that union leaders fought for during the just-completed legislative session The governor did veto more than 14% of the hundreds of bills that came to his desk, but he handed labor some key victories, in some cases, things the unions have wanted for years.  Those include increasing how much working class Californians get paid when they take family leave, expanding what absences are covered by family leave, sick days and bereavement, making it easier for farmworkers to join a union and improving conditions and wages for fast food workers. For more, KCBS Radio's Doug Sovern, Bret Burkhart and Patti Reising are joined by Lorena Gonzalez Fletcher, the longtime member of the State Assembly who left the legislature to take the helm of the California Labor Federation, where she is Executive Secretary-Treasurer.

Governor Newsom has been signing dozens of bills passed last week by the state legislature, but one big one remains on his desk, awaiting either his signature or his veto. Everyone from President Biden to Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi is pressuring Newsom to sign this bill into law, but he has expressed deep reservations about the measure. We are talking about AB2183, the Farmworkers voting rights bill, which would make it easier for farmworkers to vote to join a union. Governor Newsom vetoed a similar bill in the past, and he did not get all of the amendments he was seeking in this one, but he has been silent since it passed as to whether he will sign it or not. Meanwhile, President Biden has come out with strong support, urging the governor to sign it, which is highly unusual.  For more on this, KCBS News anchor Patti Reising and KCBS political reporter Doug Sovern are joined by Lorena Gonzales, Executive Secretary Treasurer of the California Labor Federation.

On today's episode, Amanda Weinstein, Jasmine Clark and Rachel Vindman dig into burnout. Like so many women in America, all three are busy moms with schedules that can sometimes feel overwhelming. And burnout doesn't just happen because of our to-do lists and our calendars… it happens when we don't see hope on the horizon. So Amanda, Jasmine and Rachel chat about what gives them hope, how they manage their busy lives, and how they combat burnout. Then they're joined by Nichole Leporati, a suburban mom from Ohio who balances her full-time job with being a Girl Scout Leader, an active member in her union, a foster mom for cats, a candidate for Executive Secretary-Treasurer of her local AFL-CIO, and even more. Nichole talks about how she manages it all and what she does when she's starting to feel burned out… or, as she puts it, “a little sassy-pants.”After that, Amanda sits down with Malynda Hale. Malynda is a singer, actress, business owner, activist, podcast host, and new mom, so she knows a thing or two about burnout. Malynda and Amanda chat about their kids, their faith, prioritizing social justice, and how to take care of our mental health. Finally, Amanda, Jasmine and Rachel raise a glass to medical science and hard-working campaign staffers in this week's “Toast to Joy.”Later this month, we'll be talking about Covid and—lucky for us—one of our hosts happens to be a microbiologist!
