I'd love to start a concert series of American concertos,” conductor JoAnn Falletta says. “What better way to start than with these two unbelievable pieces?” As the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra music director and music director laureate of the Virginia Symphony Orchestra, Falletta has built a reputation as a champion of American composers. Her latest recording features Danny Elfman's first violin concerto, Eleven Eleven, with violinist Sandy Cameron, and the Piano Concerto No. 1, by Adolphus Hailstork, with pianist Stewart Goodyear. “I chose these works because they were from a different world than we normally associate with concertos. Adolphus Hailstork is African American and has intense training in classical Western music,” Falletta says. “Violinist Sandy Cameron comes from Danny Elfman, who had never written a classical piece until he wrote this amazing violin concerto. They are two very out-there concertos. I love them. They're destined to be classics of the 21st century.” The Virginia Symphony commissioned Adolphus Hailstork's Piano Concerto No. 1. “That's right. It was commissioned right after I became music director. Part of the reason for the commission was that Hailstork lived in my apartment building. We both came to Virginia at the same time. I came to work with the orchestra, and he came to teach at Old Dominion University and Norfolk State University. “He wrote so many pieces and was very active as a composer. We played them all. He was also our composer in residence, and we got to do premieres of his pieces all the time. But we asked him to write a piano concerto, and he wrote this amazing piece. We took it with us when we made our debut performance at Carnegie Hall. “I thought it was time to record it with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra. We have to record it because no one knows about this piece. It's one of the greatest piano concertos ever written, after Gershwin.” Tell me about Eleven Eleven, by Danny Elfman. “He was working with Sandy on some of the Tim Burton films, and he had written some parts for solo violin. Sandy lived in Los Angeles and was playing them. Her virtuosity struck him. He said, ‘I want to write a violin concerto, and I want to write it for you.' He had never written a classical piece. At 60, he said, ‘It's about time. If I'm going to do this, I must do it now.' “They came up with this incredible idea of slightly amplifying the violin. Doing that allowed Danny to use the tremendous forces he wanted because the violin would be heard. People listening to the recording won't even be aware of that.  “Danny told me about putting in a Latin tango in the second movement and then wanted to take it out because he said, ‘Oh, no. That's too pop.' Sandy talked him out of it, saying, ‘No, it's great. Our orchestra agreed it was one of their favorite spots.' “It's similar to a film noir concerto if that makes sense. Danny's well known for his Batman music with a city noir soundscape where it's dark and a little threatening. It's just so enticing this dark journey that he takes us on. Un ressenti sur la crise mais aussi avoir une vision de ce que sera le recrutement du futur ?Ensuite Alexandre explique comment et pourquoi il a mis en place son enquête : comment est perçu le Covid19 dans le secteur de la construction et de l'immobilier en Wallonie et à Bruxelles. Alexandre a suivi les recommandations en méthode de recherche sociale : une orientation qualitative avec des entretiens exploratoires. Les entretiens se sont fait par téléphone, ont duré entre 30 et 45 minutes sur un public de 70 professionnels ou candidats et les profils sont divers et variés. 55 talents, une quinzaine d'entreprises (9% du public sont des femmes).L’enquête, quatre volets : Comment a été pris le télétravail dans le bâtiment. Comment les travailleurs évaluent la gestion de la crise du covid par leurs employeurs.Quelle incidence sur les critères de sélections des talents quand ils vont changer d'employeur (triangle qualité / temps / rémunération).Les talents seront-ils plus mobiles dans les prochains mois et donc plus en recherche d'emploi.On parlera de la confiance sous plusieurs de ses aspects.À la 18 ème minute, Michael nous parle du public qu'il a lui-même interrogé : 50 candidats et une dizaine de clients.  Une des problématiques est révélée au niveau des employeurs : certains ont été corrects et ont joué le jeu du temps de travail réduit quand d'autres jonglaient sur les nuances et la disponibilité même en dehors des heures de travail théoriques...Leur réputation en tant qu'employeur va en souffrir ! On termine cette première partie par quelques constats concernant le télétravail, tous les profils ne sont pas aptes à réaliser leurs tâches en télétravail.Il y a déjà trois conclusions qui peuvent être tirées :La question de la confiance, donc la mise en place de mesurables du type SMART. Des contacts réguliers auprès des travailleurs sont nécessaires pour s'inquiéter de l'état d'esprit, et de comment ils vivent l'isolement.Ne plus mesurer les efforts en heures mais au résultat, au travail accompli : conseil d'efficience.Le mot de la fin par Michael :Il conclu cette première partie en insistant sur le fait que si le télétravail s'est instauré comme une norme maintenant, il n'en reste pas moins que la distanciation sanitaire nous a montré et rappelé l'importance du relationnel en entreprise, cela a remis au gout du jour l'importance de nos collègues, de l'humain...Une remarque importante pour terminer : lors de l'enquête il a bien été clarifié, à la question de comment l'employeur à géré la crise du covid19, la distinction entre de qui est du fait des choix de l'employeur de ce qui lui a été imposé. On ne peut faire qu'un parallèle avec la marque employeur et ce sera plus détaillé dans la suite et seconde partie de ce podcast que vous verrez apparaître ce jeudi sur notre flux RSS. 

Ensuite, on remarque qu'en Flandre sont apparues des task-forces : qu'en est-il ? Quelles étaient l'étendue de leur décision, leur pouvoir d'action, comment en pratique ?Dans la question de l'incidence sur les critères de sélection d'un emploi, nous verrons que les candidats seront plus vigilants à propos de la santé financière de l'entreprise...mais pas que : écoutez ce podast pour tous les détails.La marque employeur : il y a des sociétés qui ont clairement gagné des points et auront une plus grande stabilité de leurs talents, quid de ceux qui n'ont pas compris qu'il fallait être attentif à ce point malgré l'urgence, malgré la crise.Pour la mobilité, l'enquête révèle déjà des éléments-clefs mais le résultat a aussi évolué quelques mois plus tard. Nous parlerons aussi de pièges dans lesquels il faudra ne pas tomber : comment gérer la reprise !Qu'en est-il des collaborateurs, dans quel état les entreprises récupèrent-elles leurs talents ? Quelles angoisses ont généré cette crise et pour ceux qui ont perdu leur emploi... beaucoup de jeunes n'ont pas eu leurs chances alors que toutes les entreprises du secteur déplorent un manque d'intérêt des jeunes pour le secteur ?Qu'est-ce qu'un top talent et quelles sont ses préoccupations ? Comment vont-ils réagir si leur employeur à mal géré la crise ?Il y a des questions qui se posent pour les licenciements, parfois elles génèrent des raccourcis dans lesquels il ne faut pas entrer. Le rôle du conseiller carrière est important ici, souligne Alexandre...Un constat est que le focus sur les tests de personnalité devient un élément important pour les entreprises, c'est un des retours dont peuvent témoigner Alexandre et Michaël ? Plus de focus sur les softs skills ? fallait-il s'y attendre ? C'était déjà une tendance générale avant la crise !Nous allons aussi parler de la place du partenaire qui recrute pour les entreprises du secteur : comment améliorer la collaboration, quelles interactions sont essentielles ? Devons-nous avoir les partenaires in-house ? Quels avantages ?  Quelle sera l'évolution du métier de conseiller carrière...Le mot de la fin avec Alexandre : à la question du status contractuel du futur entre les entreprises et les talents, il nous partage le sentiment que le statut d'indépendant devient de plus en plus une évidence qui s'impose. Une plus grande liberté pour le talent, mais soyons vigilant sur les aspects législatifs en Belgique qui devront s'adapter ? Alexandre pense aussi qu'une plateforme de type huber pour les talents va apparaitre à un moment. Les sociétés du secteur sont-elles prêtes ou vont-elles subirs les choix que les meilleurs talents imposeront ? Il pointe aussi les évolutions technologiques et insiste sur les conséquences sur les métiers du futur.

Kenneth Fuchs celebrates a 15-year association with conductor JoAnn Falletta and the London Symphony Orchestra upon the release of these world premiere recordings of three concertos (respectively for piano, electric guitar and alto saxophone) and a song cycle for countertenor and orchestra. Variety is the hallmark of the works’ scoring, while an easy-sounding mastery is the hallmark of Fuchs, one of the finest composers in the United States today. Reminiscent of the music of Smetana and Dvořák, Vitĕzslav Novák’s works are surprisingly little known outside his native Bohemia. Peter Hall talks with JoAnn Falletta, music director of the Buffalo Philharmonic, about the latest release in her long list of recordings for Naxos that both surprise and delight with their engaging discoveries. Here they unwrap the three works on this new disc’s programme: In the Tatra Mountains, Eternal Longing and Lady Godiva Overture.

The Buffalo Philharmonic’s latest release showcases two suites of music by Richard Strauss: the first, Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme, one of the composer’s favourite scores and an absolute jewel of incidental music; the second, a new symphonic orchestral suite of his opulent opera, Ariadne auf Naxos. Conductor JoAnn Falletta discusses both the music and the context of the recording with Peter Hall.

The United Kingdom is blessed with any number of top-flight orchestras – the London Symphony, London Philharmonic, umpteen BBC orchestras, and specialist groups like Academy of St. Martin in the Fields. But among connoisseurs, there's one group that has often batted above its league: The Ulster Orchestra. Considered one of the jewels in Northern Ireland's cultural crown, it was founded in 1966 and has since released nearly 100 recordings and worked under many respected conductors, including JoAnn Falletta, Sergiu Commissiona and Yan Pascal Tortelier. Now comes word that the Ulster Orchestra faces bankruptcy and possible shutdown by the end of the year due to a funding crisis. For some perspective on this, host Naomi Lewin speaks with Oliver Condy, the editor of BBC Music Magazine. "It beggars belief," said Condy. "I can't quite understand how an orchestra can go from operating at full tilt to being told it's going to be offered 28 percent cut in its public funding." Condy describes how the Ulster Orchestra has been the ultimate "show-must-go-on ensemble," having played for years against a backdrop of social unrest in Northern Ireland. "This is an orchestra that played every single concert during the Troubles of the 1970s and '80s when all of Northern Ireland was threatened with bombings either from the IRA or loyalist groups," said Condy. "The Ulster Orchestra's offices were threatened daily with bombings and they never cancelled any of their concerts." The Ulster Orchestra has also championed many lesser-known composers including the works of the Classical Czech Jan Ladislav Dussek (WQXR's Album of the Week), and a number of British composers like Arthur Bliss, Frank Bridge and Arnold Bax. Condy notes that the ensemble recently began an "exciting new chapter" under a new music director, Venezuelan Rafael Payare. But perhaps what's most surprising is why there hasn't been more outcry among the Ulster public. To find out why, listen to the full segment at the top of this page.
