Muscles & Mindset Podcast Episode: Finding Your "Enough": Exploring Abundance vs. Scarcity Introduction Welcome to the Muscles & Mindset Podcast with Dr. Ali Novitsky. In this episode, your favorite obesity medicine doc/fitness guru/physician coach delves into the concept of "enough" and how understanding it can lead to a more abundant life, both physically and mentally. This episode is inspired by Dr. Ali's recent six-week slow travel experience in Greece, which provided her with numerous "a-ha moments" that she is excited to share with you. Key Themes What is "Enough"? We explore the idea of "enough" in various aspects of life: Tangible Aspects: Money, weight loss, muscle mass, clothes, shoes, and purses. Intangible Aspects: Emotional and mental fulfillment, showing up as a parent or partner. Abundance vs. Scarcity Dr. Ali discusses how feelings of scarcity often manifest in tangible ways when we feel disconnected in our lives. For example, feeling a lack of money when there is emotional disconnection. Our brains tend to make abstract concepts tangible, which can lead to a scarcity mindset. Personal Experience in Greece The Packing Fiasco Dr. Ali shares a humorous yet enlightening story about arriving in Greece with eight full suitcases, only to realize that she had packed WAY more than necessary. This experience highlighted the concept of "enough" and how we often overestimate our needs. Living Simply Living in a three-bedroom apartment in Syros, Greece, with her family taught her the value of simplicity. They had fewer clothes, shopped daily for groceries, and wasted less. This minimalist lifestyle made her feel more abundant and less stressed. Practical Applications of "Enough" Financial "Enough" Dr. Ali Novitsky discusses setting a tangible "enough" for yearly income and focusing on meeting that without feeling scarcity. If individuals feel scarcity despite meeting their financial goals, it may be rooted in past experiences. Weight Loss "Enough" In her weight loss programs, Dr. Novitsky emphasizes "optimal weight loss," which focuses on maintaining muscle mass while losing body fat. She encourages setting realistic weight loss goals based on muscle mass and body fat ratio rather than arbitrary numbers. Reflections and Changes Personal Growth Dr. Novitsky's time in Greece prompted significant personal growth. She realized that she is enough as a partner, mother, daughter, and friend. This newfound self-acceptance has led to changes in her goals, lifestyle, and what she is willing to tolerate. Professional Offerings Dr. Novitsky introduces several programs designed to help individuals achieve optimal health: Muscles and Mindset: Beginner and advanced strength training programs. Transform for Physicians: A CME program extending from six months to a year. Optimal GLP-1 Weight Loss: Support for those on GLP-1 agonists. Nutrition Training for Healthcare Providers: A six-week live training program starting October 7th. Conclusion Dr. Novitsky encourages everyone to reflect on what "enough" means in their lives and how they can shift from a scarcity mindset to one of abundance. She thanks the audience for joining her on this journey and looks forward to helping them find their abundance. Until next time, stay healthy and abundant! Manisha Thakor is our guest in this episode of Money Tales. Early in her career, Manisha earned big year-end bonuses at work. That caused her to begin to equate her self-worth with her net worth. As Manisha looks back, she sees that her identity was wrapped up in her work, and bonuses were an indication of how well she was doing. She kept her head down, kept working hard, and tried to meet society's money expectations. Then, as Manisha was nearing age 50, she experienced the second of two near-death illnesses. She was on bedrest for months. Through this experience, Manisha came to see that regardless of all of her accomplishments, she never seemed to achieve “enough”. Manisha changed her mission and focus by deciding to step away from the work she was doing and pour into what matters most to her. Manisha has worked in financial services for over 30-years. She spent the first 15 years of her career working as a buy-side equity analyst and institutional portfolio manager. She's spent the last 15 years focused on advising individuals. She has written two personal finance books for women in their 20s and 30s. Her latest book is "MoneyZen: The Secret to Finding Your “Enough”". Manisha earned her MBA from Harvard Business School, her BA from Wellesley College and holds the CFA and CFP designations.

Guest: Manisha Thakor, MBA, CFA, CFP®, a national thought leader and personal finance expert with more than 25 years of experience working in the worlds of personal finance and investing. She's also the author of a great new book, MoneyZen: The Secret to Finding Your "Enough." In a Nutshell: Society trains us to believe that the answer to all of our problems is More: more stuff, more clicks, more Likes, and, of course, more money. But financial advisors know that the connection between true happiness and money is a lot more complicated than that. Shifting your focus from improving clients' return on investment to improving their Return on Life can help folks find that healthy balance between what they have, what they want, and what's really important. On today's show, Manisha Thakor and I have a wide-ranging conversation about the meaning of money in our life and how it can evolve over time, Manisha's personal journey to "enough," and how to find joy in living simply.
Harvard MBA and Financial Wellness Expert Manisha Thakor is an awesome financial advisor. I met her years ago and never forgot how genuine and passionate she was about helping people understand their finances. She was compelled to figure out how to help people unlock the secret to finding their ‘enough' with respect to money, and she candidly shares her own journey out of the Cult of Never Enough. A painful mindset she explains, that tells you the money you earn, the accomplishments you achieve, and praise you receive is always insufficient. Her new book is called “MoneyZen - The Secret to Finding Your Enough”, written with investigative journalist Lisa Sweetingham, sets out to understand ‘why' so many of us develop toxic relationships around work, money and success at the expense of our emotional well-being and crucially, how to flip the mental script. There's a money-happiness paradox. Yes, making more money can lead to greater life satisfaction, but it only works if you already possess emotional well-being she says. Manisha wrote MoneyZen to share the powerful blueprint she developed on that journey one that can be used by anyone of any age income or profession, to stop surviving as a human doing and start thriving as a human being. There are lots of inspiring stories in the book from people who share their experiences escaping the Cult of Never Enough. And women should especially benefit from reading the book as Manisha has always had a sweet spot for helping women and she knows how to make understanding investing simple! MoneyZen is for anyone who needs to let go of their self-sabotaging behaviors preventing them from living the life that makes their heart sing. Meet Manisha Thakor in this podcast of our live conversation on The Debbie Nigro Show. BTW: you can listen to the show live form anywhere 11-12noon ET at WGCH.com More about Manisha's background at moneyzen.com
“To live a rich, joyful, and connected life . . . achieve less.” That's the counterintuitive path to MoneyZen that this week's guest Manisha Thakor shares. For the first half of her life, money represented a scorecard of self-worth and a sense of safety. She says, “For a long time, the equation I operated on was net worth = self worth (which has no end in sight).” Even with abundant salaries from her financial services roles, Manisha fell into The Cult of Never Enough, often displayed in “the peacock feathers of possessions.” Listen to learn more about the powerful shifts she made toward joy-based spending instead. More About Manisha: Manisha Thakor is the author of MoneyZen: The Secret to Finding Your "Enough” and has worked in financial services for over thirty years, helping individuals of all ages to balance financial health and emotional wealth.

Worrying about money is, unfortunately, a universal problem. And with today's economic uncertainty, stubbornly high inflation and recession fears, our worries are only increasing. The media give us wildly exaggerated images of wealth and consumption. And even if we recognize that a tv show or an Instagram account is more fantasy than reality, those images impact what we believe we should be earning and buying. MoneyZen author Manisha Thakor calls the result Counterfeit Financial Culture and argues that it's one of the reasons we end up feeling like we're never quite enough. In this episode, Manisha details Counterfeit Financial Culture, and I offer the mimetic theory of desire as additional context for understanding the situation.Footnotes: Find out more about Manisha Thakor MoneyZen: The Secret to Finding Your Enough by Manisha Thakor Wanting: The Power of Mimetic Desire in Everyday Life by Luke Burgis Psychopolitics: Neoliberalism and the New Technologies of Power by Byung-Chul Han Capitalism and Desire by Todd McGowan NEW: I'm teaching a 12-week training program for coaches, managers, consultants, and guides of all kinds starting in September. The "cult of never enough" encourages the belief that more money, possessions and achievements will make us happy. But Manisha Thakor has learnt through personal experience that emotional wealth is more important than financial wealth. Listen to learn how to redefine your success. Manisha Thakor is the author of the book Money Zen: Escape the Cult of Never Enough and Reclaim Your Life. In this episode of Behavioral Grooves, she discusses with Kurt and Tim how she chased the American dream of financial success for 30 years before realizing it had become a nightmare. She became a workaholic and lost sight of what truly brings happiness. Manisha talks about how the "cult of never enough" encourages the belief that more money, possessions and achievements will make us happy. However, she realized that emotional wealth is more important than financial wealth. She discusses the importance of financial health over wealth, which includes having enough to meet your needs without stress. How does society measure success in terms of money, power and productivity rather than by character and contribution? Manisha talks about the Buddhist concept of the "hungry ghost" which represents our insatiable desires. She argues that the answer is often "less" - shedding commitments, possessions and being still in nature. Listen to find out how to redefine success beyond financial wealth and move towards a balance of financial health and emotional wealth. “Do you recall that famous study which stated that once a person hits an annual income of $75,000, any earnings above that have no bearing on life satisfaction? Well it turns out that number is wrong — but likely not for the reason you think. A brand new study has found that, yes, making more money can lead to greater life satisfaction. But here's the kicker: It only works if you already possess emotional well-being. Put another way, increased “financial wealth” doesn't lead to increased happiness if you don't already have a solid foundation of “emotional wealth.” So how do we solve this money-happiness paradox and learn to build that essential base layer of “emotional wealth”? Enter: Harvard MBA and financial wellbeing guru, Manisha Thakor. In her forthcoming book, MoneyZen: The Secret to Finding Your “Enough”, Manisha shares her candid journey out of the Cult of Never Enough—a painful mindset that tells you the money you earn, accomplishments you achieve, and praise you receive is never enough. Being trapped on the hamster wheel of Hustle Culture for virtually her entire adult life nearly destroyed Manisha's relationships, health, and sense of self-worth. So she set out to understand why so many of us develop toxic relationships around work, money, and success at the expense of our emotional well-being and, crucially, how to flip this mental script. Manisha wrote MoneyZen to share the powerful blueprint she developed on that journey—one that can be used by anyone irrespective of age, income, or profession—to stop surviving as a human doing and start thriving as a human being. Woven throughout the book are inspiring stories of individuals from all walks of life, sharing their own unique experiences escaping the Cult of Never Enough. Interviews with a wide range of experts, from wealth psychologists and workaholism researchers, to career coaches, economists, and even evolutionary biologists, provide readers with insights on the role that personal, cultural, societal, and physiological factors play in a Never Enough mindset.” While on the show notes page, I'd love for you to join our newsletter. How her little “T” traumas from childhood set the stage for not feeling good enough and created a desire to be financially free. Why she ended in the hospital twice and how almost dying was still not the wake-up call she needed to change. The moment that she realized she had achieved what she wanted and decided she wanted to living on her terms with more joy and simplicity. The advice she has for us on how to get off of the hamster wheel and take back control. How she's managed her depression and why it's important not to judge someone's insides by how put together their life may look on the outside. Her definition of a good life and much more. Manisha earned her MBA from Harvard Business School and her BA from Wellesley College. She also holds the CFA and CFP designations.Worst investment everGrowing up, Manisha lived in a small town in Indiana. Being mixed race, she got picked on a lot, particularly in grades four, five, and six. Those formative years put her on the search for a sense of belonging. The cheerleaders and football players didn't like Manisha, but the teachers did because she worked hard and got good grades. So Manisha started getting endorphin high from teachers' approvals and getting good grades. She kept studying and going after those grades because they made her feel whole and worth something in a way that she didn't feel socially. When Manisha entered finance, she realized there were no teachers or grades, just bosses and money. And so, she developed a profoundly toxic relationship with work, money, success, and accomplishments. Manisha had come to identify her self-worth in her school years with grades. In her professional years, Manisha placed her self-worth in her net worth. Because Manisha was so locked into her identity and sense of self-worth as her achievements at work, she didn't have friends or hobbies. She worked seven days a week and traveled 40 weeks a year for a decade. One day she was sitting on a plane and had tears streaming down her face. She had piles of paperwork on her small tray that she was trying to work on. All Manisha could think of was that she had no idea how she would make it through the next 48 hours of meetings because she had no energy left.A lady sitting across from Manisha came and gave her this look like she knew what she was going through. The lady opened this expensive-looking silver pill case and pulled out three yellow pills. She handed them to Manisha and told her to take just half a pill. Manisha grabbed the pills like candy. She didn't even ask what she was putting in her mouth. Turns out it was Valium, and it helped. Manisha was able to calm down. She took another pill the following day and made it through her meetings.Manisha kept this life going until she had two near-death experiences. Both times Manisha wished she'd spent more time with family, that she'd not missed her grandmother's funeral or the many weddings because she had meetings that were so important. The second near-death experience was her big wake-up call. Manisha had...
