This week there's a music documentary, an eco-fable set in Japan, and Dave's favorite cinematic subgenre: Australian detective stories starring Eric Bana! To start things, Dave fills Megan and Evan in on Michael Lindsay-Hogg's remastered LET IT BE, which crawled so Peter Jackson's GET BACK could fuggin' sprint. Megan watched EVIL DOES NOT EXIST, said eco-fable, which focuses on a village near Tokyo and a clamping site being developed nearby. This is Ryusuke Hamaguchi's follow-up to the much-lauded DRIVE MY CAR. Finally, everyone saw FORCE OF NATURE: THE DRY 2, which features Bana reprising the role of Aaron Falk from THE DRY. (Aside: (Dave and Evan's alternate title: THE WET, as this story is set almost entirely in a rain forest.) Of course, Dave can't resist doing his bad Australian accent and giggling uncontrollably. But is THE DRY 2 good? We let you know! Over on Patreon we talk about the 1979 comedy THE FRISCO KID starring Gene Wilder and Harrison Ford.
There are certain talents out there in the pop culture zeitgeist that demand we never forget them....On this very special episode we dive into the life and times of one of the most hilariously gifted comedic performers of our modern times. It's time for 'Remembering Gene Wilder'.This tribute to Gene Wilder celebrates his life and legacy as the comic genius behind an extraordinary string of film roles, from his first collaboration with Mel Brooks in The Producers, to the enigmatic title role in the original Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, to his inspired on-screen partnership with Richard Pryor in movies like Silver Streak. It is illustrated by a bevy of touching and hilarious clips and outtakes, never-before-seen home movies, narration from Wilder's audiobook memoir, and interviews with a roster of brilliant friends and collaborators like Mel Brooks, Alan Alda, and Carol Kane.Truly a tribute in every sense of the word, this is simply a cinematic celebration of a performer that we can truly never forget as he lived his life and his art simply wanting to be "Wilder".We had the unique pleasure of sitting down with director Ron Frank to talk about diving into the life of Gene and what he meant to so many people around us all.'Remembering Gene Wilder' is playing at the Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema now and comes out on VOD platforms at the end of April and on Blu-Ray in June.

Michael Elias is an award-winning writer, actor and director who's written film, television, theatre and fiction. His new novel, You Can Go Home Now, is a timely and thoroughly entertaining psychological thriller featuring a female cop on the hunt for a killer while battling violent secrets of her own. I've read You Can Go Home Now and can tell you it's a deeply engaging mystery with a lot of heart. Michael is also the author of the novel, The Last Conquistador. Born and raised in upstate New York, Michael moved to New York City after graduating from St. John's College in Annapolis to pursue a career in acting. He was a member of the Living Theatre and acted at The Judson Poets Theatre, La MaMa, and Caffé Chino. Michael then transitioned to Hollywood and with Frank Shaw wrote the screenplay for The Frisco Kid starring Gene Wilder and Harrison Ford. With Eve Babitz he wrote Envoyez les Violons. And then he began a long writing partnership with Rich Eustis. Together, they wrote the screenplays for Serial, Young Doctors in Love and they created the popular sitcom, Head of the Class for ABC, which was partially based on Michael's experience as a high school teacher in New York City. Michael also worked with Steve Martin, a collaboration that included material for Steve's comedy albums, network TV specials, and the screenplay for The Jerk. Michael wrote and directed Showtime's Lush Life with Forrest Whitaker and Jeff Goldblum, leading to a nomination for Best Director at The Cable Ace Awards . His semi-autobiographical play, The Catskill Sonata, about a small hotel in upstate New York, was directed by the legendary filmmaker, Paul Mazursky.

Warner Bros executive George Feltenstein takes us through the July 2022 Blu-ray releases from the Warner Archive. We kick off the discussion with the release of “Adventures of Don Juan” (1948) starring Errol Flynn and Viveca Lindfors, and directed by Vincent Sherman. Beautifully restored in Technicolor, this film is another in the long line of swashbuckler roles for Flynn, though with a lighter touch. Next George details “The Frisco Kid” (1979) starring Gene Wilder as a Polish rabbi who is traveling to San Francisco and Harrison Ford as a bank robber who befriends him along the way. This underrated comedy showcases Wilder in a more serious and sweet role, while fans of Harrison Ford get to see him in a rare western from earlier in his career. And since this is July, George shares his review of the ultimate 4th of July film from the Warner Archive, the 1942 musical "Yankee Doodle Dandy" starring James Cagney and directed by Michael Curtiz. And we finish with a discussion of some other patriotic films released by the Warner Archive that make for great 4th of July viewing options, including "The Clock", "For Me and My Gal," "Captains of the Clouds" and "The Big Parade."Purchase on Amazon:The Frisco Kid Blu-rayAdventures of Don Juan Blu-rayYankee Doodle Dandy Blu-rayOtaku Media produces podcasts, behind-the-scenes extras, and media that connect creatives with their fans and businesses with their consumers. Michael Elias has been more successful in five careers than most of us will be in one. His story cuts across comedy, television, film, theater, and fiction writing. (Some of) his writing credits: The Frisco Kid, The Jerk, Young Doctors in Love, and Head of the Class. Still, he calls himself a middle-manager, but he's far more than that. He's weaved in and out of the careers of some of the funniest people in America. The Frisco Kid (1979) After a long summer hiatus, we review this Jewish-American "classic," directed by Robert Aldrich, and starring Gene Wilder and Harrison Ford in an adventure across The Wild West. It's a road movie, a buddy movie, and a rabbi movie. And, at least in some circles, it has a reputation for being an excellent movie. We try to puzzle out why The Frisco Kid is so beloved. Is it the slapstick comedy? The charm of two charismatic actors? The story's emphasis on the value of human life? Or is it that somehow, after watching the movie, we know that everything is going to be OK? Next Time and Thank You We aim to have the next episode out by the end of November or early December. The Chicago Festival of Israeli Cinema is in full swing right now, and in honor of that, we're going to review Presenting Princess Shaw (2015) (IMDb link) by Ido Haar (it's playing at the festival). Then, in the following month, we'll move onto Hester Street (1975) (IMDb link) by Joan Micklin Silver (as we planned to before realizing the festival would be in town). Thank you as always to the Klezmer Rebs who continue to graciously let us use their music as our theme song. Their website is located here and this is their bandcamp site. Check them out! Aaron
The Golem (1920) This German film, co-directed by Paul Wegener (he also plays the eponymous golem) and Carl Boese, loosely follows the Golem legend associated with Rabbi Judah Loew ben Bezalel (also known as the Maharal), who lived and wrote in Prague in the 16th Century. Shoshanah and I agree that the film is beautiful. Where we differ is in determining whether the film is also sinsister. It's clearly an inaccurate portrait of Jewish religious philosophy and practice, but is it anti-semitic? Weigh in on the debate! Next Time and Thank You Next time, we'll continue journeying through the world of classic Jewish(?) films with The Frisco Kid, a 1979 film directed by Robert Aldrich (and starring Gene Wilder and Harrison Ford) about a rabbi trekking through the Wild West on his way to San Francisco. As always, thanks to the Klezmer Rebs out of New Zealand for graciously allowing us to use the radiata mix of their song, "Yishama-o-rama," as our theme music. Check out their website or bandcamp page. Aaron
