“You gotta be the best on your worst day.” Words to live by from the mother of Ronda Rousey, the mixed-martial-artist-turned-professional wrestler known as “the baddest woman on the planet.” Rousey's mother happens to be first American to win a gold medal at the World Judo Championships, and she also happens to be the mother of podcast guest Maria Burns Ortiz, co-author of Rousey's just-published memoir Our Fight. The book is a follow-up to the sisters' previous collaboration—the New York Times best-selling My Fight/Your Fight.    Maria has taken her mother's hard-won advice to heart, in an entirely different arena from her famous sister. A former columnist at ESPN.com, with an expertise in digital integration in sports media, she was honored as the National Association of Hispanic Journalists' Emerging Journalist of the Year in 2007 and has served as an adjunct professor of journalism at Emerson College.  Alongside her work as a journalist, Maria is also a leader and innovator in the game development industry. She is the CEO and co-founder of 7 Generation Games, an award-winning developer of educational adventure games for children, and was recently named executive director of Global Game Jam, the world's largest game creation event.  Join us as Maria shares what it was like to give voice to a shared childhood and a family history that gave rise to one of the most celebrated female athletes of our time.  Learn more about Maria Burns Ortiz: Website X/Twitter Instagram Ronda Rousey on Instagram Ronda Rousey on Twitter Please support the sponsors who support our show: Ritani Jewelers Daniel Paisner's Balloon Dog  Daniel Paisner's SHOW: The Making and Unmaking of a Network Television Pilot Unforgiving: Lessons from the Fall by Lindsey Jacobellis Film Movement Plus (PODCAST) | 30% discount Libro.fm (ASTOLDTO) | 2 audiobooks for the price of 1 when you start your membership Film Freaks Forever! podcast, hosted by Mark Jordan Legan and Phoef Sutton Everyday Shakespeare podcast A Mighty Blaze podcast The Writer's Bone Podcast Network Misfits Market (WRITERSBONE) | $15 off your first order  Film Movement Plus (PODCAST) | 30% discount Wizard Pins (WRITERSBONE) | 20% discount

Can video games change lives? And, if so, how? 50 years after the arrival of Pong, gamer and writer Keza MacDonald considers what gaming has done for us. Using the rich BBC Archives, she explores how video games grew from a niche pursuit to a cultural phenomenon which stokes the imagination of, and offers agency to, those who fall for its charms. Games now influence who we are, what we think and how we act. Keza speaks to collectors, competitive gamers, psychologists, games designers and, mostly importantly, gamers young and old to find out what impact games have had on us. We hear about the deep relationships that millions cherish with Pac-Man, Space Invaders and Donkey Kong, and illustrate the entanglement of life and gaming that is increasingly impossible to sever. 7 Generation Games has been creating educational games for students and schools across the country. The games blend math, language, and Indigenous history. In November of 2020, the U.S. Department of Agriculture awarded the company a $1million COVID-19 Rapid Response grant to expand their reach and produce a new platform to help meet challenges in education during the pandemic. The program is called Growing Math, and creates resources for teachers. Here's Leah Lemm with the story.STORY #1: 7 Generation Games expands platformLeah: Maria Burns Ortiz started 7 Generation Games with her mother in 2013 and has led its efforts to close the math gap for students from Indigenous, Latino, underserved, and rural communities. Now 7 Generation Games has 50 thousand users! Here's Maria Burns Ortiz with some background on 7 Generation Games:Maria Burns Ortiz: My co-founder Dr. AnnMaria De Mars and Erich Longie, who is now the tribal historic preservation officer for Spirit Lake, but used to be school board president, were doing the data analysis for the National Indian Education study in DC. So it's the largest study in the country, looking at American Indian and Alaskan Native youth and multiple facets of education. And they saw that Indigenous youth were underperforming in math at a greater rate than other students. But they also saw that the more time spent on culture, the more kids were engaged in the curriculum. But at the same time, the more time spent on culture, the worst kids were doing in some of these standardized subjects. So in math and language arts. And Erich saying, you know, it makes sense because if you take an hour out of class to study out of the day and you're working on Lakota culture or Dakota language, it's coming out of other times, so you have less time across the board.Reporter: They weren't willing to accept the binary, one or the other, math or culture learning. So they set on figuring it out.And in thinking about what was relevant and exciting for students, Maria and her colleagues thought: Video Games.Maria Burns Ortiz: And we thought, you know, kids will play a video game countless number of times, 50 times a day, incrementally further. And you don't see that when it comes to math worksheets. Right? But what could we do to leverage that? And then what do really good video games have? They have good stories and cultural history, even daily life in general is so full of incredible stories. And so we thought if we could combine those two aspects into something that teaches math, we'd be on to something. So that's how we ended up building out our first games. Our first game was Spirit Lake, which we built out on Spirit Lake. We ended up expanding from there.Reporter: Combining culture and schooling through video games has gone from one game to many. And now they've expanded even more. Juliana Taken Alive leads the new Growing Math program, which comes from a $1 million COVID-19 Rapid Response Grant from the USDA.Juliana Taken Alive: So what Growing Math is connecting, creating resources for teachers in terms of lessons, videos, and then connecting that with the games. And we show teachers how to use the games, how to use the reports, and then how to connect that connection with the lessons that are being created. It's already something that 7 Generation Games was doing - working with the math games online.Reporter: Growing Math expanding on the strengths of 7 Generation Games to create resources for teachers during and beyond the pandemic.Juliana Taken Alive: So when Growing Math started, it was to accommodate the distance learning and teachers that were teaching by, you know, Google Classroom, Zoom, you know, whatever. So it's easier for them to use something that already exists. And then once we start going back to face-to-face, they can keep using it. And the other thing is to produce something that our students, as Indigenous students can identify with.Reporter: The program is no cost to schools. Having reached her ultimate career goal before age 30—New York Times best-selling author; staff writer for ESPN—Maria Burns Ortiz turned her attention to a new challenge: promoting equitable education. She’s the co-founder of 7 Generation Games, a mission-based ed-tech startup focused on closing the math gap for students from Native American, Latino, and underserved and rural communities. She started the company with her mom, Anna Maria De Mars, World Judo Champion turned educational psychology professor. Since her days as an eighth grade math teacher, De Mars wanted to make video games to teach kids math, but at the time, the technology didn’t exist. With Burns Ortiz’s career at a crossroads, her mom convinced her to take the money she would have spent on an MBA and invest it in starting a business. Eight years later (five, full-time), 7 Generation Games counts more than 40,000 active uses in schools and homes across the country. The company recently received $1 million in grant funding from the U.S. Department of Agriculture for Growing Math, a new learning platform aimed at helping meet the needs of students and educators in Arizona, Minnesota, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oregon, and South Dakota. “There’s a disconnect between what software companies think teachers need, and what they actually use,” says Burns Ortiz, who runs the company from Minneapolis with a team of 11 spread around the country. Although 7 Generation was focused on rural and underserved urban communities pre-pandemic, distance learning has heightened the awareness that “the digital divide is a lot greater than we thought.” When schools closed in early 2020 due to Covid-19, 7 Generation lifted its paywall to get software to teachers. But in some of the communities it serves, nearly half the students don’t have Internet at home. “No one can learn from software they can’t use,” Burns Ortiz says. In the past year, 7 Generation more than doubled its offline game usage, from 40 to 85 percent of its collection. “Making something that seems high tech run on something low tech is really hard,” Burns Ortiz says. “Maybe it’s not the coolest, 3D virtual world, but it runs on a phone.” Despite early difficulties convincing investors, Burns Ortiz and her mom felt strongly about setting up 7 Generation as a for-profit company. “Social impact is not a charity,” Burns Ortiz says. “You can make a positive societal impact and also have that be a profitable enterprise. When it’s non-profit, often that doesn’t encourage people to go in and innovate on solutions.” Her goal now? “I want 7 Generation to be as ubiquitous in the classroom as text books.” After our conversation with Burns Ortiz, we go back to the classroom with the University of St. Thomas Opus College of Business, where Kevin Henderson is a professor of management with a focus on universal design for learning. “We want to give everyone in the classroom an equal opportunity to succeed.” That starts with material that feels relevant to a wide variety of cultures and communities. “It’s so important for students to see themselves represented in curriculum.”

June Brown is 94 today. So to mark her birthday we're re-releasing our special drama 'Missing You' starring June Brown and Sam Barnard. And we're adding a bonus interview with the writer Richard Vergette after the show. Missing You was written specifically for June and Sam - and based on Richard's own personal experience of having a son with Down's Syndrome. Distinct Drama presents...MISSING YOU by Richard VergetteStarring June Brown MBE and Sam BarnardProduced by Ashley Byrne, Iain Mackness and James BrownAn MIM Production for Distinct Nostalgia - More than a Podcast! This 30 minute drama kicks off ‘Generation Games’, a new series of occasional monologues and duologues exploring relationships, friendships and connections across the generational divide. June plays Margey, who against advice, refused to give her son up for adoption when she was told he had Down's syndrome. She has protected William fiercely throughout his life, even when William has preferred not to be protected. Despite the tensions that arose when William demanded his independence, both mother and son remain devoted to each other. Now they can’t see each-other due to the pandemic and the enforced separation causes each of them to reflect on their shared past. Missing You is written by Richard Vergette who says: ‘Being the parent of a young man with Down’s Syndrome I’m aware that the compassionate response we received by medical staff at our son’s birth, wasn’t always the experience of parents from previous generations. Parents like Margey had to fight just for the right to bring up their own child. William is equally formidable and needs to lead his own life – away from his Mother. Richard continues: ‘I’m fortunate enough to have worked with the excellent actor, Sam Barnard, so was delighted when he agreed to play the role of William. When writing the role of Margey I had the voice of June Brown in my head and so asked the producer, Ashley Byrne, “Can we find a June Brown type of actress?”. “How about June Brown?” he replied! I still can’t quite believe that a living legend is playing in a piece I’ve written. They are both brilliant in their respective roles and bring home the frustrations as well as the joys of their characters’ relationship.’Actor Sam Barnard commenting on his part says: "June is such a legend and a hero of mine since I was little. When I was asked to play this role I said "OOH I SAY" and did a little dance of joy!"MIM and Distinct Nostalgia Creative Director Ashley Byrne adds: ‘This is a very touching and thoughtful portrayal and is a tremendous story to kick off our series exploring relationships across the generations. We’ll be bringing more established names together with not so well known talent in a bid to tackle ageism in our society. In broadcasting the trend is to increasingly shove people in age silos and never the twain shall meet but we feel the portrayal of relationships with people across the generations is crucial for social cohesion.’Distinct Nostalgia began in January 2020 and regularly charts. Its main content includes interviews and reunions with famous tv and movie stars and regularly celebrates the soaps, comedy and British film. Distinct Nostalgia also includes new drama and comedy. Acting legend June Brown may have given up her role as Dot in EastEnders but the 93 year old is far from retiring. This Christmas she plays the mother of a son with Down's syndrome who is separated from him because of the Pandemic. It’s June’s first role since quitting the BBC’s long running hit soap and explores a relationship strained by the isolation felt by many during the Covid 19 crisis. ‘Missing You’ was commissioned by production company MIM for Distinct Nostalgia, the very same platform June used to announce her departure from EastEnders back in February. And the 30 minute audio piece kicks off ‘Generation Games’, a new series of occasional monologues and duologues aimed at exploring relationships across the generational divide. She may have started with judo at the age of 12, won her first medal at 16, and was the first American to win a gold medal at the World Judo Championships in 1984, but there’s a lot more to today’s guest, Dr. AnnMaria De Mars than that, as she’s also built a phenomenally successful career in technology and games development. The Julia Group is a not for profit organization that began within the Spirit Lake Dakota Nation. Together with tech company 7th Generation Games, they’re developing video games that combine math, history, and adventure gaming. The highlight of these games, and something Dr. DeMars is immensely proud of, is that they are inclusive and bilingual, to include all children’s ways of learning. In our interview, we talk about how Dr. De Mars went from a gold medal judo champion to a games developer and professional at the University of Southern California. We look at the current state of judo. And we touch on ways you can help support 7th Generation Games, from sharing the games on social media, leaving reviews on the App Store and Google Play, or bigger requests, such as sponsoring a school. Do you feel called to make a dramatic pivot in your career? How would you stand up against adversity? Have you ever healed yourself through physical activity?   In This Episode: How Dr. De Mars channeled her teenage anger into something productive, like judo, instead of dangerous activities How Dr. De Mars identified drinking with lack of action and why she quit drinking for a year Would she change any parts of her early life if it would have meant different coping mechanisms What it was like to change her career path and start working for herself How the role out of these unique maths programs impacted the communities they’ve been released in Why it’s so important to find other people who support you and what you’re doing What it was like to start dating again after losing her husband at middle age How has judo changed since the 1980’s and whether or not it’s changed for the better How do you create boundaries and safeguards when faced with resistance, especially to safeguard children   Quotes: “If you give kids less math, they’re going to learn less math.” 19:20 “Women aren’t judged on their accomplishments. Women are judged on their potential.” 24:16 “I do think that gaslighting happens to everybody, and you have to guard against it.” 28:10 “Being a good manager is all about seeing what needs to be done and then doing it.” 34:13 “There’s a lot to the building character aspects of judo, but a lot of that is just talk. Sports doesn’t build character, it reveals it.” 52:32 “Help your kids and they will like it. There’s no downside to that.” 1:09:54   Links Check out the full show notes for this episode!
