Crucially, the deep fakes can behave in ways without the approval or consent of the individual being faked and can be misused for fake product endorsements, political gain or even pornography. The technology behind deep fakes is advancing so rapidly that even experts are finding it increasing difficult to tell the difference between fakes and reality.  Blasingame received the 2017 Presidential Excellence Award for Teaching and the 2023 Presidential Excellence Award for Service at TXST. Anne is an Emmy award-winning broadcast journalist. Her reporting and anchoring skills have been recognized numerous times by the National Association of Television Arts and Sciences, the Colorado Broadcasters Association, The Associated Press and Women in Communications. She is a member of journalism advisory councils at the University of Colorado at Boulder and Metropolitan State University. After almost 40 years covering Colorado's news, shaping generations of journalists at Denver7, and being Denver's longest-serving continuous evening news anchor, Anne said she would sign off from the station this fall. “After much reflection, I have decided to step away from my role as evening news anchor in November,” said Anne Trujillo in an August 3 news story. “It's time for me to leave Denver7 and pursue the next chapter of my life – one that allows me the flexibility to pursue new passions as well as my time with my family.” On the fourth anniversary episode of the podcast, Anne reflected on how broadcast journalism has evolved since she started and shared her thoughts on the most memorable news stories she covered in her career.

Hour 2 of The Dawn Stensland Show: On Tuesday, the seventh day of the House select committee's January 6th hearings is scheduled to take place. According to the Washington Post, the public hearing is expected to concentrate on establishing a link between far-right militants and Donald Trump's White House. According to CNN data analyst Harry Enten, the January 6th congressional hearings have not had an impact on voters. Enten emphasized that the primary concern for prospective voters is inflation—with a vast majority of those polled trusting Republicans over Democrats on the issue. According to National Review, the Secret Service confirmed that they're aware of newly released videos featuring Hunter Biden doing what appears to be crack cocaine and “engaging in other salacious” behavior. While speaking before a predominantly Hispanic crowd in San Antonio, First Lady Jill Biden said the individuals that comprised the group were as unique as the “breakfast tacos” in San Antonio. The National Association of Hispanic Journalists encouraged the First Lady and her team of writers to educate themselves and do better moving forward. While announcing his Executive Order to protect access to abortion medication, President Joe Biden told the story of a 10-year-old pregnant rape victim who was unable to get an abortion in Ohio following the Dobbs v. Dale Blasingame, an assistant professor of practice in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Texas State University, joins the Big Ideas TXST podcast to discuss National Parks, State Parks and incorporating these outdoor treasures into higher education. A founder of the Study-in-America program at Texas State, each semester Blasingame oversees a class of students who travel to public parks across the U.S. to hone their journalism skills and learn to tell stories with substance and relevance. Students benefit from the experience of studying beyond the traditional classroom setting, much like studying abroad. Blasingame is an avid hiker and traveler. In 2014, he visited all 95 state parks in Texas in one year. He's now almost halfway through his mission to visit all 400+ national park properties. Dale's dog, Lucy, joins him on trips and loves to hike and climb rocks. Blasingame and Lucy were included on Texas Highways Magazine's list of Extraordinary Texans for 2016, and his stories have been featured on TV, radio, digital and in magazines. He's been able to marry his passions of technology and our parks by creating a course called Mobile Storytelling in the Park, in conjunction with Texas Parks and Wildlife, where students produce social video content at state parks. In 2017, Blasingame received a grant to develop the School of Journalism and Mass Communication's first Study in America course, where he took students to do similar work in national parks. The program is now in its third year. Blasingame is a member of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Foundation, National Park Foundation, National Parks Conservation Association and The Trail Foundation. He's also a licensed commercial drone pilot. Before joining the Texas State faculty, Blasingame was a television news producer. LNN also amplifies the work of others in elevating the visibility and voices of a community often absent in newsrooms and news coverage.Hugo is also a writer and associate editor for The Chicago Reporter producing stories focused on covering race, ethnicity, and culture in the third largest market in the U.S.In addition to being an accomplished journalist, Hugo is the only president to serve two terms in the National Association of Hispanic Journalists' (NAHJ) history. In 2016, he was inducted into the NAHJ Hall of Fame, and as part of his acceptance founded the Hortencia Zavala Scholarship – a not-for-profit to help students with the high cost of education. Hugo was born in Patterson, NJ and is the proud son of Peruvian immigrants. He shares that growing up he felt like a child of two worlds, as he had the responsibility at a young age of bridging the language barrier between his parents and the outside world. There were many times in his career that Hugo could have chosen to blend in, have a big title, and hefty paycheck, but that would have caused him to have to stray from his beliefs and convictions. When those situations would arise, he would think about what his mom had to go through working in a sweatshop or that he never saw his dad much as he worked 2-3 jobs 7 days a week. His parents worked hard to be able to provide Hugo with the incredible opportunities that he has been able to leverage. From messaging around never giving up or compromising your beliefs to don't listen to all the noise, Hugo has so much insight to offer. Next week my guest is Charlene Gorzela, Podcast Host, Grief Recovery Now and Grief Recovery Method Specialist.  After 26 years as the CEO of a successful Professional Staffing Services firm in the city of Chicago, she knew that the next chapter would be another important one for her.  She has always had the passion in the human potential movement and knew that this next chapter in her life would be something unprecedented and extraordinary.   What happened was something that even in her wildest dreams, she would not even have guessed that she would be doing.  Please take a moment to write a review when streaming. Acosta will describe what it was like to hear former President Trump call him out at a press conference as a “rude and terrible person” who “CNN should be ashamed to have working for them”. He'll also describe the incidents that led  the Trump White House to dub him “public enemy number one” and have the press office revoke his press credentials. Acosta will offer insights about what journalists can expect from former President Trump and the Biden administration. Guest Jim Acosta CNN Anchor and Chief Domestic Correspondent Jim Acosta is a CNN anchor for weekend programming and the network's chief domestic correspondent, based in Washington, D.C. Previously, Acosta served as CNN's chief White House correspondent, where he covered the Trump administration and the Obama administration from the White House and around the world. Acosta also reported from the 2016 campaign trail following Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump. Prior to joining the White House beat, Acosta was national political correspondent throughout CNN's 'America's Choice 2012' election coverage, embedded with the Romney presidential campaign as the lead correspondent. He traveled with the GOP presidential candidate to key battleground states and to the U.K., Israel, and Poland, covering the latest campaign developments. Acosta sat down with Mitt Romney for two one-on-one interviews, breaking several political stories and presidential debate coverage. In addition, he covered both of President Barack Obama's inaugurations and contributed to the network's mid-term election coverage. Acosta has received several awards including The National Association of Hispanic Journalists 2017 Presidential Award, the SJSU Journalism School 2018 William Randolph Hearst Foundation Award, and was a part of the CNN team that won an Emmy for their 2012 presidential campaign coverage. In 2019, he was honored with the annual "Truth to Power" award from the New York Press Club, which is given to individuals "whose body of work challenges the power establishment and/or defends journalists." In addition to his reporting, Acosta's debut book, "The Enemy of the People: A Dangerous Time to Tell the Truth in America," which focuses on his experience covering President Trump during his first two years in office, was released in June 2019 and became a New York Times bestseller. Why democracy falters without local news

Our guest this week is Gilbert Bailon, the editor-in-chief of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Our host spoke to Bailon about the importance of local news to American democracy. Local news organizations have been gutted in recent years, leaving communities across the country with little to no coverage and stripping them of their watchdogs. What are the consequences for American democracy and why should everyday Americans care? Bailon joined the Post-Dispatch as editorial page editor in 2007 and then in 2012, became the paper’s editor. Before that, he was executive director of the Dallas Morning News and the founding editor and publisher of Al Dia, a daily Spanish-language newspaper owned by the Dallas Morning News. He has served as president of the American Society of News Editors, the National Association of Hispanic Journalists, and Unity Journalists of Color. By some estimates, 1,300 communities across the country now have no local news outlet at all, leaving them with no independent oversight of local government and corporate activities. Some cities, such as Pittsburgh, New Orleans and Youngstown lost their daily newspapers, while some papers like the Cleveland Plain Dealer, that used to provide award-winning, robust local coverage, are now operating on a shoestring with reduced staffs.

Robert Hernandez, associate professor of professional practice, and digital journalism professor at the prestigious USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism, provides a delightful overview of the future of immersive digital journalism. Robert Hernandez's skill and experience covers a multitude of areas such as changing news industry ethics, information and communication technologies, new media, online journalism, pop culture, the practice of journalism, and social media as it pertains to journalism. Hernandez is a veteran of web journalism with a strong focus on the nexus of technology and journalism. His primary goals are to empower people, increase opportunities for better informed reporting and storytelling, to engage the community, improve overall distribution, and increase revenue. Hernandez's belief is that ‘open source' shared knowledge between journalists will improve the quality of journalism, and he continually works to build communities of digital journalists and technology-oriented writers. He is an active participant and supporter of VR journalism and media diversity. Hernandez has served on many national boards such as Chicas Poderosas, InquireFirst, the Online News Association, and the National Association of Hispanic Journalists. Hernandez has worked professionally on several top projects that are heavily involved with augmented reality, as well as wearables/google glass and virtual reality. His latest project is an immersive experience that is appropriately named and trademarked as, JOVRNALISM™. His project work has been featured in The New York Times, on NBC, NPR, and in USA Today, and other significant publications and media outlets. Hernandez discusses his professorial work with the Oculus platform, 360 video, and how many make the transition soon after working with 360, to VR. For as Hernandez explains, 360 is more common in newsrooms, and due to economics it has a wider reach. He explains the 360 camera in detail, in regard to framing of the story and the composition, and how he relates this important information to his students. As he discusses, the 360 camera becomes almost another subject in the reporting, as it is a thoroughly immersive experience. The technology journalism professor gives an overview of some of the advanced technological platforms that are launching on YouTube and other media that allow users to split views and utilize VR tools such as Google Cardboard to essentially go inside the video, for full immersion. However, as Hernandez explains, the technology is so shockingly interesting that first time users may be distracted by the amazing experience, so much so that they may miss key elements of the actual story being told. But he states that a good story will resonate with people, regardless of the technology, for that is the key to solid journalism. Hernandez recounts a particular experience in which he covered a coming storm and how the graphics and semantics, coupled with the advancing VR technology, provided reference points to help people understand the scale of the storm to fully grasp its potential danger. He discusses how immersive experience helps people to more fully believe the story, but cautions that those with nefarious intentions could use the technology to manipulate as well. Hernandez's JOVRNALISM has received multiple awards from respected institutions such as the Online News Association, Society for News Design, and Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication, and others.
