Dr. Vikram Mansharamani is a global trend-watcher who shows people how to anticipate the future, manage risk, and spot opportunities. He is the author of "The Making of a Generalist," "Think For Yourself," and "Boombustology." He has been a frequent commentator on issues driving disruption in the global business environment. Vikram's ideas and writings have also appeared in Bloomberg, Fortune, Forbes, The New York Times and a long list of other publications. Linkedin twice listed him as their #1 Top Voice for Money, Finance and Global Economics and Worth has profiled him as one of the 100 most powerful people in global finance. Millions of readers have enjoyed his unique multi-lens approach to connecting seemingly irrelevant dots. In this episode, Vikram shares how a “generalist mindset” can help us navigate a world full of complexity and uncertainty; and why, from his perspective, this opens up more creative, innovative, and effective solutions to our global problems. Highlights/quotes from this episode: " Every single perspective is limited, biased, and incomplete. And if that's the case, then why not use more than one perspective to really integrate a view of what's happening in the world?” Specifically, we discuss: -The "migrant mindset" and how his family's immigrant background helped shape him today. -What a "generalist mindset" is and how it helps us connect the dots. -How being a generalist is a "call for empathy" and the integration of multiple perspectives. -Vikram's view of some of the forces contributing to polarization. -How diversifying our media diets and other sources of information can help us think more comprehensively. -How renewable fuel in the U.S. may be tied to the Arab Spring and other examples of global interconnection. -Vikram's "global developments to watch" over the next 5 years. -And much more! After replacing her insatiable appetite for sugary drinks with an unstoppable passion for health, Kara Goldin founded Hint, which is now an award-winning, multibillion-dollar unsweetened flavored water brand! This self-proclaimed ‘accidental entrepreneur' joins us on today's episode to talk about her transformative journey of building a beverage company with no prior experience in the industry, the purpose which keeps her motivated, and her ambitious goals for the future of the company. About the guest (Guest Bio)Kara Goldin spent many years working in the technology and media industries, including for big companies like TIME Magazine, CNN, and AOL. After struggling with health issues that came with being a diet soda addict, she decided to create an alternative drink that is both healthy and delicious, and Hint was born. Despite her lack of experience in the food and beverage industry, Kara's passion for the life-changing capabilities of her product kept her going, and she has since been listed as one of Huffington Post's Six Disruptors in Business, Fortune's Most Powerful Women Entrepreneurs, and Forbes' 40 Women to Watch Over 40! She is also the author of Undaunted, and host of The Kara Goldin Show. In this episode Kara explains why she refers to herself as an ‘accidental entrepreneur,' and what her career journey has looked like to date. (03:09) How Kara has built her brand, Hint, from the ground up for the past 16 years. (06:56) Some of the key factors that Kara believes will lead to a successful entrepreneurial venture. (10:09) What effective leadership looks like, according to Kara. (13:38) The purpose that drove Kara to found Hint. (15:44) Why, as an entrepreneur, it is essential that you fully believe in the mission behind your brand. (22:09) Kara shares the valuable lesson she learned when interviewing for a job in Silicon Valley. (26:04) What Kara believes to be her calling in life. (32:00) Goals that Kara has for the future of Hint. (34:10) Highlights / Key takeaways Your company should be built upon your interests and values. Always prioritize your health! Understanding the needs of your team is essential to good leadership. Combining different types of knowledge and skills can have a hugely positive impact on your business. Best Advice that Kara would give to someone who is transitioning from a 6-7 to 8 figure business: Avoid groupthink and be open to engaging with people whose way of thinking differs from your own. “People don't have to be just like you and have your same experience. When they are coming from a different journey, they may add more value to what you're doing and help you think differently.” (29:57) How Kara defines success for herself (32:00) “Being able to make a difference. I don't think I could just go and be an entrepreneur just for the sake of being an entrepreneur once I've seen how you can create products or services that change people's lives. I think that's my calling.”What is the purpose that drives your entrepreneurial venture? We'd love to hear! Tell us on our social media! In this special edition of "Technically Human," we feature a live public conversation about the future of democracy, technology, and public policy. In 2017, Yaël Eisenstat came onboard Facebook to change it, joining the company as its Global Head of Elections Integrity Operations. What she discovered while working there alarmed her. She started speaking out, becoming a leading critic of tech's threat to democracy. In this conversation, I sit down with Yaël in front of a live audience to ask: How can American Democracy persevere in the age of social media? Why does tech need regulation? Who can reign in Big Tech? What can we do to help? Yaël Eisenstat works at the intersection of tech, democracy, and policy, with a focus on what the public square and open, democratic debate look like in the digital world. She works as a Future of Democracy Fellow at Berggruen Institute and a policy advisor to start-ups, governments, and investors looking to align technology to better serve the public. She has spent 20 years working around the globe on democracy and security issues as a CIA officer, a White House advisor, the Global Head of Elections Integrity Operations for political advertising at Facebook, a diplomat, and the head of a global risk firm. She was a Researcher-in-Residence at Betalab in 2020-21 and a Visiting Fellow at Cornell Tech's Digital Life Initiative in 2019-2020, where she focused on technology's effects on discourse and democracy and taught a multi-university course on Tech, Media and Democracy. Yaël Eisenstat has become a key voice and public advocate for transparency and accountability in tech, particularly where real-world-consequences affect democracy and societies around the world. Her recent TED talk addresses these issues and proposes ideas for how government and society should hold the companies accountable. In 2017, she was named in Forbes' list of “40 Women to Watch Over 40”. She is also an Adjunct Professor at NYU's Center for Global Affairs, a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, and she provides context and analysis on social media, elections integrity, political and foreign affairs in the media. She has been published in the New York Times, the Washington Post, Brookings Techstream, TIME, WIRED, Quartz and The Huffington Post, has appeared on CNN, BBC World News, CBS Sunday Morning, Bloomberg News, CBS News, PBS and C-SPAN, in policy forums, and on a number of podcasts. As we continue our "Mature Manhood" series with this second installment entitled "The Marks of a Priest", our confidence grows as we are fashioned into a mature priesthood. This is the same process we see God using to form Levi into the nation of priests that is described in Deuteronomy 33. As we continue to examine this passage, in addition to receiving discernment, being tested through tension, and judging impartially, the Levites were marked by watching over God's word and guarding his covenant. This is the next phase of becoming mature men in the kingdom looks like for our body! Pastors Matt and Wade, along with Elder Eric call us all up to maturity with this word by challenging us to first mark ourselves with the surgically precise word of God. After truly "shamar-ing" God's word, starting in our own lives first then we add to that by guarding his covenant. This means that we both know what the Word says and how it applies to our lives, and we are gaining God's perspective on what his will is pointing us towards. Through this maturation process, we are growing to be able to connect what his word is instructing us to with what he's intending to do through his covenant. Meditate on this word saints! Guard over this word in your lives! Let this word change you and mature you, after all, this is Life Changing Ministries!

The Shifting Perceptions Podcast - Inspiration For Creative Lifestyles
Leave Us A Review Kara Goldin is a force to be reckoned with. An insanely successful entrepreneur, she is on a mission to improve the health of millions. We spoke to her about her early influences, what fuels her passion for healthy living, and how she stays motivated to inspire herself, and others. Kara is the CEO and founder of the healthy lifestyle brand, Hint, Inc., based in San Francisco. Their products include fruit infused carbonated beverages that are free of artificial sweeteners and preservatives, naturally infused caffeine-based drinks, and a scented sunscreen spray that is oxybenzone and paraben-free. Throughout her career, Kara has won numerous awards for her contributions to society and her business acumen. Named as one of Fortune's Most Powerful Women Entrepreneurs, as well as one of Forbes' 40 Women to Watch Over 40, Kara is a trailblazing innovator who proves that women can, and will, do it all. This awesomely insightful hour-long episode takes a deep dive into how Kara stumbled upon the benefits of healthy living, the challenges of juggling family life in the world of business, and the importance of both personal and professional growth. Here are our favorite takeaways from wildly successful entrepreneur and all-around business guru Kara Goldin. Healthy Perception VS Healthy Reality When Kara decided to develop Hint water, she was inspired by her own journey of trying to be a committed H2O drinker. After gaining a wonderful new baby, and a not so wonderful new diet soda habit, Kara realized that her weight was creeping up and her energy levels were severely lacking. On a mission to kick the coke and up her water intake, she committed herself to drink more water. But, like most people, Kara found drinking water became a chore. So she did what any brilliant business innovator would — she solved the problem. After realizing that adding fruit to her water made it much more palatable, she set about trying to find a product that was similar. Unfortunately, all that she could locate in her local grocery store were pseudo health drinks, with more sugar than most soft drinks contained. Armed with this information, and a desire to provide consumers with a healthy alternative, Kara set about developing a shelf-stable beverage that contained no sweeteners and no artificial preservatives. Cue the birth of Hint. Start From The Beginning A common theme throughout our discussion with Kara was that she's not afraid of diving into something new — because the fun is in the learning process. A self-confessed "scrappy" businesswoman, Kara explained to us the importance of jumping into a venture and educating yourself along the way. When we asked Kara what significant lessons she had learned from being an entrepreneur, she told us that "Passion trumps experience," which really resonates with us as creatives. Almost every guest we chat to on this podcast has a passion for, and commitment, to what they do; it's not a coincidence; it's a correlation. "I learned along the way that passion trumps experience any day. And curiosity is another one that's the key. If you can get somebody who just really loves what you're doing and emotionally excited about it, and curious, that's definitely something that is much more important." Don't Put All Of Your Eggs In One Basket. Kara shared with us the importance of diversification as an entrepreneur, and how she almost learned that lesson the hard way. After earning a lucrative deal to have her beverage stocked in Starbucks, Kara received a phone call 18 months into the contract letting her know that Starbucks had decided to go into a different, more profitable, direction. Rather than dwell on the temporary loss, Kara used the disappointment as fuel to help diversify Hint's business model. This quick thinking helped Hint to develop a new business relationship with Amazon's grocery delivery arm, and they quickly became one of Amazon's top-selling products. "I always tell entrepreneurs to have a quick celebration about that victory, but then figure out how do you actually diversify, you know, so that you've got a lot more like victories and not just be trying to figure out how to make that one account, keep going." Kara is a genuinely passionate and dedicated advocate for safe and clean products. We love how much she stressed the importance of consumer education, and the responsibility of companies to be totally transparent about their products and what they contain. Even with the best will in the world, it can be challenging to decipher past snazzy marketing gimmicks and pseudo-health marketing, so we appreciate companies like Hint, Inc., who care about their consumer and are socially conscious — not just profit-driven. Karen Carter is the Chief Human Resources Officer and Chief Inclusion Officer at the Dow Chemical Company. She is responsible globally for guiding and directing Dow's efforts to create a more diverse and inclusive environment and workforce. “My job, in a nutshell, is to ensure that we have an environment that gives everyone a fair chance, those processes, those policies, how we evaluate people, and how we hire people…if you’re not focusing deliberately on including, you will ultimately exclude.” Karen has 25 years of experience with Dow, but she only recently moved into the HR space. Before assuming her current responsibilities, she held the role of North America Commercial Vice President, Dow Packaging and Specialty Plastics (P&SP). In her role, Karen was a member of the global business leadership team and was responsible for the overall profit & loss of P&SP’s North America region, which is part of Dow’s Performance Plastics Division and represents more than $18.4B in sales Karen has a bachelor’s degree in marketing from Howard University and a master’s degree in international business from DePaul University. In 2014, Karen was named to the prestigious Forty Women to Watch Over 40 list for her innovative leadership contributions Dow Chemical has been in existence for a little over 120 years. With 50,000 employees around the world, it has revenue in excess of $40,000,000,000. Karen describes the company as a combination of a science and technology organization with a goal to develop and deliver solutions that are essential to human progress. One main focus of Dow is on consumer care, for example ingredients for prescription medications and vitamins. Another one of their markets is packaging, for instance, keeping meat fresh, and as Karen touches on in our conversation, there's actually technology that is used to make a plastic that enables meat to still be fresh for a few days. The last market that is a main focus is infrastructure - things like roads and bridges and buildings and mega structures like stadiums. What does diversity and inclusion mean?Karen says, diversity is the collection of all of our unique differences. We talk about diversity across multiple dimensions, and most people tend to migrate directly to race, gender, ethnicity, however, there are other dimensions of diversity – for example, military experience or cultural fluency. Inclusion is the intentional and deliberate action we take to create a culture that embraces and values those differences. There are several technologies that Dow Chemical is leveraging in the diversity and inclusion space. They use a Workday People Portal that allows them to be much more transparent with information directly to employees and it allows leaders to have easy access to data that helps them make better decisions. For example, being able to see the last 50 promotions a leader has made to ensure that talent is diverse. As Karen shares in our conversation, we still have a long way to go when it comes to diversity and inclusion in organizations today. Some good strides have been made, but not enough. Things you will learn: Why companies are choosing to hire non-HR people to lead HR What does a Chief Inclusion Officer do? Typical biases that occur in most organizations How to measure D&I How D&I impacts engagement Technologies Dow Chemical is leveraging in the D&I space Why the conversation around D&I is so critical right now Contact: Karen Carter on LinkedIn

Kara Goldin is the founder and CEO of Hint Inc. and former tech executive at AOL. You've probably seen Hint flavored water in your grocery store boasting no sweeteners or anything artificial. She thought of the idea while trying to kick her Diet Coke habit, which was up to 12 cans on some days, and couldn't find a naturally-flavored water with no additives. She started experimenting in her kitchen, boiling fruit and adding it to water. The result became the company that she launched in 2005 while pregnant with her fourth child: Hint Inc. Since then Goldin has been named one of Fortune's Most Powerful Women Entrepreneurs and Forbes' 40 Women to Watch Over 40. In this episode she talks about how she created her company from the ground up, infiltrating the beverage industry, and her advice for any entrepreneur trying to build something. In honour of the traditional 1900s English Christmas carol, or for those born in the 80s - the Bob and Doug Christmas classic, we thought we would do our own 12 Days of Christmas. Listen to the full episode to catch Young PR Pros' 12 Days of PR Christmas. We divided the 12 days into three categories: books, movies and activities. 1. Four Books You Need to Read Over the Holidays Day 1: Get the motivation to pursue your passion by reading No Fears, No Excuses by Larry Smith (note: forgive Kristine for her mistake, she says No Fears, No Regrets in the episode). Day 2: How will you measure your life by Clayton M. Christensen will give you the inspiration and wisdom you need to achieve a fulfilling life. Day 3: Meg Jay argues that 30 is NOT the new 20 in her book The Defining Decade: Why Your Twenties Matter - and How to Make the Most of Them Now. Day 4: Brush up on your grammar through the delightful sense of humour of Lynne Truss in her book Eats, Shoots and Leaves. 2. Four Movies You Need to Watch Over the Holidays Day 5: Ex-machina will keep you on the edge of your seat in this future world where AI is taken to the next level. Day 6: Kristine suggests watching a classic movie that has been referred to in a lot of pop culture references, Good Will Hunting. Day 7: You can't go wrong with superheros and PR. Hancock follows Jason Bateman who discusses the fine art of grassroots outreach, reputation management, and even a CSR campaign. Day 8: Iron Lady takes you through the life of the infamous Margaret Thatcher. The movie gives you a glimpse of the behind the scenes of political PR. If you have time, check out these honorouble mentions: The Queen and The Devil Wears Prada. 3. Four Activities You Should Do Over the Holidays Day 9: Read a physical newspaper on Christmas Day and New Years Day. Find out what is making the front page of national and local newspapers - you will find out a lot about your society. Day 10: Take a yoga class. Ross believes if you don't have your mind right, then your business or professional life won't be right either. Day 11: Learn more about your family. We often forget that some of our best allies are right next door, or in the same house. Learn about your family history, do you actually know what your Uncle Roger does for a living? All this information is very useful, because you never know when you will need professional help from a family member. Maybe your Aunt Sue is an entrepreneur who lived through the recession of 2008 and kept her business alive, how did she do it? Day 12: Of course, listen to this podcast. But we won't be hurt if you listen to other amazing podcasts out there right now, such as Undone, Crimetown, Freakanomics, and The Revisionist History. We are off until the New Year.
