Today's summer rewind is a re-release of one of our favourites that we keep coming back to. We'll be back in September with brand new interviews!Making friends can be intimidating at any age, but it feels especially daunting as adults. As we hit our 30s, our groups of friends are getting smaller and smaller (fun fact: We replace half our friend group every seven years as adults!). Life gets busy, people move away, and milestones come at different times. Even though this seems to be universal, it can still feel like something is wrong with us. If we've learned anything along our adulting journey, it's that friendships are crucial to our mental and physical wellbeing. So this week, we're learning how to prioritize the most underrated of our relationships, how to make new ones, and why it's so damn hard to maintain friends as an adult. We're not the experts, so we called in Dr. Miriam Kirmayer. Having spent over a decade researching the science of friendship and helping people live more connected lives, Dr. Miriam is a clinical psychologist, writer, speaker, and leading expert on friendship and social connection. She's appeared on some of our favourite media outlets, from Call Her Daddy to Vogue and The New York Times. She sits on the Mental Health Advisory Committee for Wondermind, a media company co-founded by Selena Gomez, and is a member of The GenWell Project, a human connection movement. Welcome to today's ICYMI, where we kick off the week with a quick game-changing tip from one of our guests that you might have missed. Gather 'round, besties... ahead of Galentines Day, we're talking friendships. If everyone in your bestie group chat is so busy you're planning a month out for your next hang, this one's for you. Our 20s and 30s can feel lonely and isolating AF as all our friends enter different life stages, get hella busy, and move around the world. So if you're feeling some kind of way about the state of your friendships right now, you're not alone. We actually replace half of our friend group every seven years, so it turns out this is a right of passage. But making friends (and keeping the good ones) is wildly important for our happiness and our health, so we're kicking it back to one of our favourite conversations with psychologist and friendship expert, Dr. Miriam Kirmayer, who reveals why we need to prioritize our friendships, how much time it takes to form friendships, and the commonalities we should look for. I wanted to tackle loneliness for my holiday special this year as not all of us are surrounded by family and friends. The World Health Organization has declared loneliness a global health threat — as bad for your health as smoking fifteen cigarettes a day. Loneliness is the most significant preventable risk factor for depression, addiction, and suicidality. It increases the chance of early death by 30%, more significant than the risk of obesity, a sedentary lifestyle, and excessive drinking. Loneliness also increases the risk of heart disease, dementia, and diabetes. My guest this week is Pete Bombaci. Pete aims to make the world happier and healthier by eradicating loneliness. Our show was taped in front of a live audience of Managers from the City of Barrie, the Town of Innisfil and the County of Simcoe. Pete talked about the GenWell Project, Canada's Human Connection Movement. Pete shares why social connection is the most significant contributor to happiness, empathy, compassion, and resilience, yet our world is more disconnected than ever. Pete offers simple ideas to make connections more intentional. Amy Deacon, the Founder and CEO of Toronto Wellness Counselling, joins me to explain why our multi-screening and multi-tasking youth are so lonely and what we need to do to encourage face-to-face connections. When I mention "health," what comes to mind? The terms "physical health" or "mental health" ( I mean, you're listening to a mental health podcast, so I can imagine that one might pop up quite quickly) hitting the gym, eating well, doctors? Great words, but I'm curious: did the terms "social, connections or relationships" cross your mind? Often overlooked, studies have shown time and again that one of the most important overall contributors to general wellness, regardless of nationality, background and lifestyle, is the quality of the relationships in our lives. We take care of our physical health and our mental health, but so many of us don't think twice about our social health. That's something today's guest is trying to change. Founder of the GenWell Project, Canada's human connection movement, Pete Bombaci, joins me today to talk about the importance of connecting as a means to maintain and elevate our sense of wellness. Today, our conversation with Pete Bombaci is all about human connection and we explore the vital role of human connection in today's increasingly digital world. The huge number of the global population is getting lonelier each passing year, which is extremely concerning, especially when you look at how loneliness affects people's physical and mental health. Yes, says Pete, but it is a pandemic that we can directly impact and change. He shares with us many ways we can increase our connections every day, including easy ways to speak to strangers and how we can all have a better, healthier relationship with the digital sphere. In this episode you will hear: Why human connection is more important than exercise and eating well. The importance of turning off distractions and connecting with others. Making social connection part of your day-to-day life. How we can consciously build connections one person at a time. Reasons you should go to the office if you have the choice. The long-term physical and mental effects of chronic loneliness. How you can change the world just by reaching out to one person and actively listening. Closing the gap of human connection and learning to talk to strangers. Ideas for growing the number of connections in your life. Pete is a human connection expert and the Founder and Executive Director of The GenWell Project, a Human Connection Movement that has been working since 2016 to educate, empower and catalyze people around the importance of human connection for their health, happiness, longevity, and the benefit of society as a whole. We have all been educated on eating well, exercise, not smoking, and more, but we have never taken the time to educate the broader population about the importance of human connection for our own well-being and for the benefit of those we connect with. The solution to the disconnected world that we live in today should not be a medical one, but one where each of us recognizes that we are all part of the solution and that we need each other, maybe more than ever. Quote: “The greatest gift we can all give right now might be the gift of human connection. And by a simple conversation, you can change not only your life but the life of the people that you're speaking to.” Pete Bombaci When the pandemic first hit, we thought it would be over in a matter of weeks. Now here we are, almost two years later, and we're still in the thick of it. We're all in a place that we've never been before, and many are struggling, especially those who live alone or work from home. On this episode of Authentic Living with Roxanne, we have invited connection expert Pete Bombaci back to discuss how the pandemic has affected our connections and how we can help those who need it most. During the Northeast blackout of 2003, Pete Bombaci noticed something he hadn't seen in years. He observed people getting together for a BBQ, hanging out with their neighbours and relying on their community. Prior to the blackout and even up to the COVID-19 pandemic, Pete had been noticing that people were focused on themselves and even believed that they didn't need each other. While working as a bartender at Yonge & Eglinton in Toronto, Pete learned the power of human connection and relationships. He went onto work in Marketing and Sales at Molson Coors, then grew a "hilarious" moustache, and ran Movember Canada. When his five years at Movember came to an end, he decided if he didn't start the movement, known as the GenWell Project, he may regret it for the rest of his life. Check out this episode, and learn how Pete put up a website and just went for it!
It might seem ironic but the advent of the restrictions on society during the Covid 19 crisis, in particular "social distancing" has sparked a major conversation about the impact of loneliness and isolation on mental and physical health. And as people find themselves working from home, unable to socialize with friends and family, so they are asking themselves - how can I maintain a sense of connection?Few people are as well placed to address these issues than Pete Bombaci, Founder of The Genwell Project, a not for profit dedicated to human connection. Pete comes to the discussion about how to stay mentally well during this period of forced isolation having studied the impact of loneliness and advocated for greater connection for many years.Joined by my daughter Jessica who had just emerged from a period of isolation after a friend tested positive, together we explore the impact of loneliness, what you can do right now to ensure you stay connected, and how we can maintain a sense of belonging as we live through this crisis and build momentum for even more human connection once this is over. We also briefly discuss grief and the impact not being able to physically gather as normal is having on all of us.
