What should I buy my grandparents for Christmas? Listen to Lori Williams' senior gift guide It's a busy time of year and you may find yourself scrambling to find gifts for everyone on your list. Maybe you're wondering what to buy Grandpa this year, or you'd like to find something “out of the box” and unexpected. If you're looking for gift inspiration, Senior Services Expert Lori Williams has a shopping guide for the holiday season.Seniors love self-care There are many solid options that are standard for elderly loved ones, such as self-care gifts. Cozy blankets, pajamas, robes, and slippers are usually a win. You can also monogram gifts to make them more personal. Also, consider aromatherapy like an essential oil diffuser for a safer alternative to candles. Try a nail salon gift card if you haven't already and your loved one enjoys a fresh manicure.Gifts with utilityYou can also find cost-efficient gifts with utility. For example, the reacher grabber tools. This is great for picking things off the floor or reaching items that are higher up - and it helps keep your loved ones safe. Grip socks are another great way to keep your loved one safe from falls and keep their feet warm too. Also, gift certificates to places like Target or Walmart allow them flexibility to get what they need.Activity-based gifts and experiencesDoes your loved one enjoy something hands-on? Try branching out with an adult coloring book. If your loved one has expressed interest in learning how to craft (like crocheting), see if your local craft store offers classes. For active seniors, you could also consider a membership to a local senior center or a YMCA Silver Sneakers program, or give them a few yoga classes, to help them stay healthy. Another great idea is to take a little road trip to where they grew up or have memories - you may hear stories you've never heard before. Finally, remember that gifts don't have to be expensive; it's the thought that counts. Think about what your loved one enjoys and you're well on your way to brightening their holiday season.Topics discussed:- Gifts for grandparents- Senior shopping guide- Popular senior gifts- Self-care gifts- Experience gifts- Classes and gift certificatesTakeaways from this episode:-A smart speaker (“Alexa” or "Google Mini") is an enjoyable tool seniors can use to play music. They can also program it to use as a phone, so if they experience a fall, they can say, “Alexa, call 911” and receive help.-Seniors tend to become cold, so the gift of warmth and coziness is usually a great one to give.-Seniors' skin can be a little more sensitive and become thinner and drier. Consider different ways to help them stay hydrated and moisturized.-Gifts can be simple, such as a coffee and donuts date, or learning to bake cookies or decorate cakes together.Resources mentioned in this episode:016. Talking Tech for October 26 2020 iOS 14.1 Released for the HomePod, iPhone etc - A Note Concerning Intercom As of 14.1, the Intercom feature is only HomePod to HomePod, 14.2 will have the full Intercom functionality from Apple Watch, iPhone, and iPad. Here is my demo of HomePod to HomePod Using The Intercom Feature https://s302.podbean.com/pb/7c924a75d7efc3d3b685cd02c9543b25/5f910876/data1/fs54/339150/uploads/How_to_use_the_HomePod_to_HomePod_intercom_functionbawfb.mp3?pbss=7eed7e75-1a51-5ac1-924c-f14fe7420b88 A Note About the Camera View on the iPhone for detecting Objects Due to the chip, this function besides letting you know there is a face in the camera view, is only available on the iPhone X and above, it doesn’t work on the iPhone 8. I had a few questions from folks over the. Week end who couldn’t find the feature, but they were all using iPhone 8 or 8 Plus. iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro Now in the Wild Available now at your local Apple Store, online, and now expect a raft of videos etc about unboxing etc etc. Another snippet of news I learnt over the week end, there is an extra sensor in the iPhone 12 Pro max for stabilization, but besides this, you might as well save yourself some money and just get the iPhone 12 Pro (if you are after a Pro - remember LIDAR) according to some folks on the web. Sound Scape Street View Beta This works well, you can virtually go to a specific location, and then use all the usual Sound Scape commands to look around, and choose “Go” on the Street View screen to keep moving in the direction you are pointing. If you turn the iPhone, you will hear an orchestral sound and then feel a vibration to say you have locked on to a new direction and way you go again. ChromeCast with Google TV From beginning to completing setup, I was fully able to do this with Talkback in Australia. To turn on Talkback initially, I held down Back/Down Arrow for 3 seconds to enable Talkback. Hoping to do a podcast very soon. My Demo of the New Nest Audio A month or so ago Google had the event, and I assumed that the new Google Home now called Nest Audio was more or less the same, since no one had actually described it to me, and I didn’t double check on twitter smile. Simply it is a pill like speaker, about 15CM tall, and similar touch spots to the Google Mini now called and updated Nest Mini which feels like the older Google Mini, but I’m assuming sounding a bit nicer. At any rate, here is my podcast of playing with the Nest Audio. https://s159.podbean.com/pb/d72e3dbd1c6db8c206c6f45d9cac257f/5f910684/data3/fs54/339150/uploads/a_bit_of_a_play_around_with_the_New_Nest_Audio_that_replaces_the_original_Google_Home6wrxx.mp3?pbss=33efed1b-db82-5260-b82e-7cf7c3034b5a AfterShokz Now Has Their Own Website in Australia. This is excellent news, plus I was able to get a go at the new AfterShokz OpenMove ear phones, and found them quite comfortable and like the fact that it now uses a USBC cable. Here is my podcast of the AfterShokz OpenMove. Https://www.aftershokz.com.au Speaking of Head Phones, the cheap Beats Flex Look Quite Interesting These have been out for a little while, are $79Au, have the H1 chip, have a wire connecting both ear phones, and sound quite good for listening to audio books, podcasts, VoiceOver etc, not brilliant at music if you are a music lover. Hoping to get a pair of these this week, so I’ll let you know. A few More Podcasts From Me Tip on how to Force Quit an app on the Apple Watch, Mac, TV, and iOS devices. A demo on how I use the workout app on my Apple Watch to do several Workout sub-routines. Check these out on: http://davidwoodbr.podbean.com

In this weeks Talking Tech, David celebrates his 30 years at the RBS of NSW and now Vision Australia by discussing some of the tech highlights over his time working as a technology specialist. With these notes, you get the whole list, enjoy. Unusual or Meaningful Tech Over the Last 30 years When I started work for the then RBS of NSW (now Vision Australia) on June 4 1990, my tech on my desk was a Keynote PC Plus based on a Toshiba 1000, a Braille & Speak note taker, and of course a telephone land line. Tech sitting on my desk 2020 for general everyday stuff, iPhone, QBraille Braille Display, iPad, MacBook Pro, Surface Pro, Google Home, Amazon Echo, and HomePod: plus my audio studio setup for podcasting and my radio program. In no particular order, this is a list of all the tech that I have personally used for both home and work over the last 30 years covering my time at both Royal Blind Society of NSW then Vision Australia). Where amazingly some of the tech still exists when it first came out and where it has evolved to current, I’ve put the updated version in the current lists as well. Interestingly, there are over 10 products that are Assistive Tech related that have lasted the test of time and are in the old and current tech sections. Where some of the products may not be that well known (at least according to me smile), I’ve put a very short blurb next to them. Oddly or not, I wish some of the devices that are no longer around still were, as they did some great specific things. For me, I think the main technology advances were: Microsoft Windows 3.1 access (keeping in mind Outspoken had been out for a while for Macs) in the 1990’s, Mobile and Smart phone access in the 2000’s (Talkback for Synbian and VoiceOver for iPhone) plus VoiceOver for the Mac in 2005, Smart speakers and Smart home tech in 2010-2020. Things we still need to conquer: Ongoing message and change for accessibility across mobile/desktop apps, and the huge one, the web. Access to self service kiosks. Indoor navigation. Accessibility in white goods. Accessible EFTPOS terminals (Apple Pay sort of gets around this). More audio described content on free to air. Hate to pick out out Foxtel, but they sort of deserve it, an accessible Foxtel box. One final point, we should be careful about assigning accessibility based on the fact that it works with one specific type of software, particularly in the screen reader industry. Old Tech If you haven’t heard of some of this stuff, use good old Google, should still be some info floating around. If it brings back hopefully good memory’s I’m glad.

Google Director of Energy & Enterprise Partnerships Jeff Hamel joined us to talk about the work Google is doing with Xcel Energy in Denver along with other electric utilities and energy firms in its ongoing efforts to grow into a critical role it can play in the energy industry in enabling the energy future imagined by technologists, regulators, the utility industry, and especially the general public. Google devices already at play in this effort include the Nest Learning Thermostat and devices with the Google Assistant, including Android phones and the the Google Home, Google Mini, and Google Hub devices, but those devices can communicate with an ever larger cadre of smart home technologies that are helping evolve the relationship between people and energy, and utility customers and their energy providers.

Did You Know You can add up to 15 items on the dock on the iPad: just move the apps you wish or a folder of apps in the usual way to the Dock - rather than just the default 6. Some Added Touch Controls to the Google Home Mini Google has been slowly adding back in more touch controls on the Google Mini. For us in Australia: Long press on either side - stop/play music or Long press on either side: stop a timer or alarm. Some More Google Home Tips Restarting your Google Home at least once a week seems to clear things so for example you can get the latest episode of your favourite podcast. If you have a Google Home and its not responding to your voice, try and blow in to the mic holes to clear the dust out of them: this worked for me (David). There seems to be a bug in the Google Home Mini, if you set a reminder, whilst the mini says it has done it, it hasn't. Screen Protecters for the Apple Watch I finally have a solid plastic screen protecter for my Apple Watch which clips on underneath each side. The only issue is that I can not do a 2 finger double tap to answer a call, but flicking left or right and 1 finger double tapping is fine. The screen protecters that I have used where the protecter gets stuck on to the actual glass of the watch, never seem to stick and fall off.
