In this episode, we're celebrating the thrill of guitarmony, sick riffs, and driving 8th-note rhythms by talking about Judas Priest. Before getting ready for this episode, neither of your esteemed hosts had ever delved into the Priest discography beyond the rock-radio hits and Beavis and Butthead—though we'd both spent our time with Heavy Metal Parking Lot. Since so many of the GOATs hold the band in the highest of regard, we knew that K.K. Downing and Glenn Tipton belonged on this list, so we embarked on a journey to find out why. After hours of listening and watching, we're happy to report that we get it. From their debut, 1974's Rocka Rolla, through 1980's British Steel, deep into the '80s-production era with 1986's Turbo, and through the speed-metal bravado of 1990's Painkiller, plus live videos and records—the super-loud Us Festival performance and the crushing Unleashed in the East record—we found a lot that we love.If you're new to Priest's music or are trying to find your own starting point, we've got some great tips for guitar jammers. And if you're a hardcore fan, maybe you've got some tips you can share for our next steps. '84 saw the solo effort from axe virtuoso Yngwie Malmsteen. "Rising Force" is an appropriate moniker as the record took the Metal World by storm. Not to mention it was kind of a trailblazing release. The 80's was definitely the era of the flamboyant frontman. But Malmsteen chose to let the music do the talking...literally. So this week we go through this musician's musician album. And Unleash The Fury!! In our "News, Views and Tunes", we go over the "The Last Voyage of the Demeter" flick. And give a shout out to Zebra Boy from the "Heavy Metal Parking Lot" doc. Musically, we crank some new and used from Dead Kennedys, Whiplash, Adversarial, Venger, Haatan and introduce Italy's Lord Goblin in our "Indie Spotlight". Horns Up!

Brian shares the bizarre hourlong monologue about Garfield's "Pipe Strip" in 07/27/1978 from the Lasagna Cat channel. Meanwhile, Dan shares the cult classic Heavy Metal Parking Lot, a videotaped documentary about metalheads pregaming for a Judas Priest concert, as well as the other entries in the Parking Lot Extended Universe. Men vokalist, tangentist og designer Per Spjøtvold nektet å la Goat The Head forbli forhistorisk. Hvilken rolle spiller pastisjene og referansene i Goat the Head? Er elleve år gamle ideer alltid gode? Hvorfor spille "Live in Ler"? Danish legends Pretty Maids have been on our radar since their '84 debut. The band always stuck out amongst the underground as they were one of the few bands hailing from Denmark. Throughout the 90's, as hard rock bands took a hit, Pretty Maids continued to thrive. And are still killing it today. PM's latest live album "Maid In Japan: Back The Future World" is still fresh on the racks. So it's a good time to scratch another off the old Bucket List and speak with mainman Ronnie Atkins. We discussed the whys and wherefores of the new live package, their unique monicker, and the old days of the Copenhagen scene. We Summon the Darkness and My Friend Dahmer, two of prolific director Marc Meyers latest films, unfurl almost opposite takes on serial killers. Dahmer is a sober, anti-sensationalist exploration of how a confused teen became a reviled cannibal. Darkness turns a Satanic Panic-era killing spree into a headbangers' ball of dark comedy.Meyers, as you can probably guess, has a lot of range. We Summon the Darkness opens with three young women (Alexandra Daddario, Maddie Hasson and Amy Forsyth) road-tripping to a metal show in Indiana in the 1980s. The radio mentions a string of Satanic murders, they meet three boys in the metal show parking lot, and things happen. Johnny Knoxville turns up as the voice of the religious right. We're keeping things deliberately vague, and this episode contains no significant spoilers. You're probably wondering if we also talk about Jeffrey Dahmer, the Midwestern murderer who kept victims' body parts in his freezer. We sure do.Here are highlight of the interview, with timestamps:3:00: Interview with Marc Meyers begins5:20: We talk about the short documentary "Heavy Metal Parking Lot," one of the influences on We Summon the Darkness. 10:00: The Satanic Panic "did feel really real at the time."10:45: Guns N Roses are to Slayer as alcohol is to heroin?13:00: Writing and directing vs. writing.15:00: Marc Meyers on proving My Friend Dahmer wasn't just another serial killer movie: "We had to almost make the movie to prove it as a concept."16:30: Are kids less mean than they were in the 1970s and '80s?22:00: How teenage Jeffrey Dahmer went wrong.23:20: A very subtle spoiler about We Summon the Darkness.23:50: Very subtle spoiler ends.24:45: How things are going with our big, not-by-choice video-on-demand experiment.28:00: Will COVID-19 recalibrate what we consider dramatic? 30:00: Shout out to Richard Linklater. What's to be said about Heavy Metal Parking Lot? Well, it's infinitely entertaining, crude and also hilarious. The more conservative might find it appalling. Me...I think it's an important documentation of a subculture that really does not exist much these days. Don't get wrong though, it does make me laugh and it really triggers my urge to drink. Jeff Krulik and John Heyn are the minds behind Heavy Metal Parking Lot and a host of other fascinating videos/shorts. We discuss Heavy Metal Parking Lot, King of Porn, Forestville Rocks, and others. Check out their websites for links to merch and more videos! http://www.heavymetalparkinglot.com/ https://www.youtube.com/user/jeffkrulik/videos

Thirty-three years ago, two young men named Jeff Krulik and John Heyn drove to the parking lot outside the Capital Centre in Landover, Maryland, to interview a crowd of teen and 20-something tailgaters about to see a Judas Priest concert. The 17-minute film they came away with became a legendary rock-and-roll document. We're talking about "Heavy Metal Parking Lot." Hell yeah. We're ready to rock. Documentary film director and the man responsible for the iconic Heavy Metal Parking Lot, Jeff Krulik takes us through his public access beginnings to his successful run as award winning "doc jock". In a relevant bonus clip, Ernest Borgnine shares the secrets of longevity and hyperbole abounds when Jenny falls off the "cliff".
We interview filmmaker Jeff Krulik after a screening of his documentary "Led Zeppelin Played Here" at Suns Cinema (a super-cool theater) in Washington DC. Jeff's film explores a bit of music folklore — some say that Led Zeppelin played a show to about 50 people at the Wheaton Youth Center in Maryland in January 1969. Yet there is no physical documentation of this concert. Jeff is also well-known for the short film "Heavy Metal Parking Lot," which you can find on YouTube. Watch it! Another screening of "Led Zeppelin Played Here" will be held on May 24 at AFI Silver in Silver Spring MD. Episode 9 so divine. Have ya heard, bruh? Judas Priest is in town! Also we're traveling back in time to 1986. Hope you're not attached to those shirt sleeves, because Stuart Von and Bob Sham are tackling the inimitable cult classic "Heavy Metal Parking Lot" by producer/directors John Heyn and Jeff Krulik. It was a moment in time where not liking Judas Priest would probably get you called something inappropriate. Something special was captured in the parking lot of a Maryland suburb in 1986. A document of joy and inebriation. Priest rules man. Priest is baaaaaaad.
See Hear Podcast comes to the end of its fourth year of existence. Slowly but surely, we’ve been bringing you discussions about all manner of music-related films since January 2014. To celebrate, Tim, Bernard and Maurice want to party like its 1986. We are joined by one of the two creators of the film / time capsule known as Heavy Metal Parking Lot, Jeff Krulik. Jeff and John Heyn hung out for 2 hours in the parking lot of the Capital Centre in Landover, Maryland on May 31 1986 just prior to a Judas Priest concert. They went armed with a camera, a microphone, four U-matic tapes, and the bravado to ask the teens / early twenty-somethings about their love for heavy metal music. The result honestly captures the joy these fans had at celebrating a particular time in their life. The film doesn’t romanticise their youth, nor mock it – it is simply a record of a night. There are truths that can be applied to any community worldwide. Jeff and John went on to make further short films of a similar nature investigating fans of different aspects of popular culture (like Phish, monster trucks, Neil Diamond, Harry Potter), but HMPL is where it all started. The See Hear crew are grateful that Jeff gave so willingly of his time to talk about this important film. It slowly gained many fans over the years, many of them musicians – which shows us that they too are fans. To all See Hear listeners, thanks so much for sticking with us for another year. We’re all hugely grateful, and look forward to bringing you great shows for your earholes in 2018. You can download the show by searching for See Hear podcast on iTunes or download from https://seehear.podbean.com If you dig what we do, could you please rate us at iTunes or even better, spread the word that the show exists on social media or at real life social gatherings so more folks can tune in. Please join our friendly Facebook discussion group at http://www.facebook.com/groups/seehearpodcast You can send us emails at seehearpodcast@gmail.com to suggest films you'd like us to discuss, give us your thoughts on what we do or anything else music-film related.

Welcome to the very first edition of a man on the street series that I've been wanting to do for years. This is my first attempt at a roaming solo mic interview. I'll do my best to not spike out so hard on future episodes but you get the gist and jest of it all right here. Essentially this is my first hand account of walking around a parking lot amongst 20,000 heavy metal manciacs who are about to witness one of the last stops of The Book of Souls Tour presented by the mighty Iron Maiden. Join me as I approach and explore tailgate parties full of BBQ, beer, weed and Heavy Metal Maniacs. Just so you know, there isn't a FAKE News Network or a Shambly Boys Brothers Productions, that shit sounds wicked legit though. That picture is made by Iron Maiden too, I didn't ask their permission to use it either, so they should hit me up if they don't want me using it anymore. Cheers!
This week we cover the the copyright-respecting second single “Zip-Lock,” from Bowling Rock troubadours, Lit; It’s a song about pockets? We have a broader conversation about how musical tropes seem novel when you’re younger, bands deliberately writing stage directions into their lyrics, and this director’s penchant for parodying better ideas from other videos (in this case, Twisted Sister’s We’re Not Gonna Take It and in last week’s case, Heavy Metal Parking Lot.) Also: Another kid president (but this time with more dads), a letter from listener and artist @JDRenaud, and a few words from our new sponsor, Roswell Mutual Insurance.
This week we cover Nice Guy Anthem(TM) “Flavor of the Weak” by American Hi-Fi. What kind of dirt does the singer have on this girl? How much does he know about her boyfriend? What does he have against marijuana and Nintendo, two things that are arguably very good? Also: We dissect the music video, a glamorized, sanitized version of the cult documentary “Heavy Metal Parking Lot,” and reminisce about how great the latter is. Music We Like: Baroness - Purple, Land of Talk - Inner Lover, and Thundercat - Drunk (again)
Airs Monday Feb 6th. Our 50th episode! This 2nd live show at SF Sketchfest was a screening and panel on the cult classic "found footage" home movie Memorial Day 2000, edited by Carly Ptak and described by guest Cory Sklar as "Heavy Metal Parking Lot meets Gathering of the Juggalos". Trigger warning! Feces, vomit, Tom abuse, and general stupidity abound! Our esteemed panel includes Illogical Contraption's Cory Sklar (aka Chaki), comedians Melissa McQueen, Frankie G, and Emily Van Dyke. Recorded Sunday January 29th at Pianofight. Watch Memorial Day 2000 at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nYGDnXF8xV0 and join us for the conversation next Monday.

In Episode 10, we are joined by artist, writer, and director, Michael Lee Nirenberg. With a massive archive of stunning visual art as well as a number of brilliant short films over the past decade and a half, he is perhaps best known for his much-acclaimed 2014 documentary, BACK ISSUES: THE HUSTLER MAGAZINE STORY. https://www.amazon.com/Back-Issues-Hu... Never one to champion the mainstream, Nirenberg's current Huffington Post column serves as a constant dialogue of ideas with those who have pushed societal, musical, technological, literary, and artistic boundaries, often from the farthest edges of society, yet remain culturally relevant and significant. In this 80-minute discussion, Nirenberg sits down with us to talk about the current state of rock and roll, punk, post-punk, Brett Smiley, Kate Bush, Bob Dylan, Kurt Vonnegut, Rap, Hip Hop, Eminem's "Campaign Speech," the irrelevance of music criticism, the 1986 documentary Heavy Metal Parking Lot, Cleveland's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Museum, and a whole lot more. We also discuss favorite bands, guitarists, vocalists, as well as pit David Bowie's LOW and HEROES and Steely Dan's AJA and THE ROYAL SCAM against each other in a new Rock Under Fire segment called Gun To The Head. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/news/mi... For our first SF Sketchfest live show, we had a fun panel to watch Heavy Metal Parking Lot (1986) and Neil Diamond Parking Lot (1996), short documentaries by Jeff Krulik and John Heyn. They document two very different sets of music fans in Landover, Maryland a decade apart. HMPL achieved cult status from its beginnings as a cable access doc, circulating on VHS and finally receiving a DVD release in 2006. In 1986, Jeff Krulik & John Heyn set out with a camera and no real goal in mind. They ended up Outside the Capitol Center-a local music "super venue" during a Judas Priest Concert. What followed was the cult sensation "Heavy Metal Parking Lot". Jeff talks about making the film, how he got started plus his reality foray with "Ernest Borgnine on the Bus" and more. HEAVY METAL DUDES! On parle du rock, le vrai! (Hahaha!)

Our first movie review — brought to you by Nick and Mike. Corey is strangely absent. It’s great conversation, and it doesn’t disappoint. We go deep, deep into Jeff Krulik’s mind. If you’ve barely heard of him, you know HEAVY METAL PARKING LOT (1986), an incredible time capsule of Judas Priest fans waiting to see a show. If you’ve pushed below the surface, you might know him capturing unusual celebrity personalities like Freddie Blassie or Ernest Borgnine. Keep descending and you’ll get to his great portraits of interesting outsiders. We go to the bottom of his mind where the monsters live and talk about his new project LED ZEPPELIN PLAYED HERE. Regardless of which Krulik films you’ve seen, you’ve got to spend some time at his YouTube page and JeffKrulik.com.
Movie Meltdown - Episode 194 This week we feature special guest - comedian, actor, writer, producer... Margaret Cho. Margaret is one of the most successful stand-up comics working today, starting back when she was just a teenager. So we discuss not only her introduction to the world of stand-up comedy, but also how she was quickly thrust into acting and how she ended up in unconventional projects like the cult film "The Doom Generation", John Woo's big budget action extravaganza "Face-Off" and the horror remake "One Missed Call". All that plus how she hung out with Quentin Tarantino in the 90's and just what movies they used to watch together. And while trying to explain to people what "letterbox" means, we also mention... Belle de Jour, Heavy Metal Parking Lot, SCTV, telling stories visually, Magic, Carol Burnett, Mad Men aesthetic, meeting the people you are playing, The Exorcist, 90's-noir, Selene Luna, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, meeting David Bowie, Alex P. Keaton in widescreen, San Francisco, Carrie, This is England, Halloween, It's My Party, The Omen, The Holy City Zoo, Black Devil Doll from Hell, Trilogy of Terror, Rio Bravo, having a weird body-builder version of yourself walking around, moving into the sitcom atmosphere and buying a back-stock of 8000 VHS tapes. "I mean, I just want to do everything. I'm really open to whatever I can do... and I want to work. No matter what." For all of Margaret's tour dates and the rest of what she's up to, visit her website at: http://www.margaretcho.com/
Also, "Heavy Metal Parking Lot"!
