-How does codependency contribute to burnout in therapists? -What is ‘misattunement' and how can we better understand it's impact during our childhood? -Why is community so fundamental in healing our codependency? Welcome to Episode 118! This week, we are greeted with the presence of Monica Helvie, LMFT, to discuss burn out in therapists. Monica describes what codependency looks like in overworked and burnt out professionals: contorting, insecurity, self-doubt, and maintaining a facade of competence. We explore how our experiences in childhood and being over-attuned to others may make us more vulnerable to burnout as working adults. Monica emphasizes how having a community is fundamental in our healing and offers ways we can start to form our own. We conclude with hearing some tips from Monica on how to address burnout in our lives. It's a must-listen! More on this week's guest: Monica Helvie is an LMFT and trauma coach for audacious, overworked and burned out therapists. She helps her clients find their inner badass again with insight and connection. She uses trauma informed, body based interventions to help healers break through their burnout and achieve authentic alignment with their best self. www.monicahelvie.com Freebie from Monica: Core Wounds Workbook → https://monica-helvie-s-school.teachable.com/p/released-core-wounds-workbook More deets on the episode: We begin with hearing Monica's definition of codependency: when an individual has learned it's safer to attune to the needs of others. Codependents often experience a lot of guilt and shame in response to their needs not being met and then internally make meaning out of it. Monica describes misattunement and how, unfortunately, codependents often develop an internal perception of what they have to do to survive where they minimize their needs. Monica shares with us about codependency in her own life and ways she overattuned to her parents. In her effort to develop safety, awareness, and repair in her relationships, she created a template for how to interact with others and then took that to everyone in adulthood. She turned into the hero, the fixer, the competent one. We shift to Monica's specialty: working with burnt out therapists. Monica lists the common traits: contorting, guilt, shame, self-doubt, insecurity, isolation, and projecting resilience/independence/competence. These traist then often contribute to burnout, exhaustion, imposter syndrome, and isolation. How does Monica help therapists combat burnout and find their inner badass again? Monica emphasizes how therapists have a deep craving for connection and creativity. In order to help them be their authentic and honest self, she empowers them to stop settling for bad work environments. She helps them cultivate radical responsibility, get in touch with their values, and ask the big question: what do I want for me? She offers a community to her clients and tells us why and how we can start to cultivate our own community. Thanks for coming Monica! And thank you for being here dear listener! PLEASE: Rate. Review. In this episode I spoke with my boy Helvie, one of my favorite hardcore vocalists in the city. Helvie is someone I've known for a while, knowing him as a great skater in the city and seeing him lead in two great bands in the city. He's currently killing it in his newest band, L.I.B. (Life Is Beautiful), and we now share an amazing drummer in both of our bands so I figured it was perfect timing for us to chop it up. After all this time I've known Helvie I've still never knew anything about him, like a lot of my friends & guests, so I'm glad we were able to have this conversation finally. These convos mean a lot to me & I hope you enjoy as much as I did! [include file=get-in-itunes.html] Dr. Carl O' Helvie had a dream one night to go get a chest x-ray. What he found out from the lab results wasn't good news. They found a spot on his lung that turned out to be cancer. It was a devastating diagnosis back 39 years ago. Talk about an inspiring guy! Dr. Carl O' Helvie got diagnosed with lung cancer back in 1974. He was told by his doctors right away that they needed to operate on his lung with an extensive and invasive surgery. They also told him that they needed to do chemotherapy and radiation treatments. He didn't accept what they had to say especially after looking into the low survival rates along with the nasty side affects of the chemotherapy. Against his doctors wishes along with his family and friends, Dr. Helvie decided to pursue natural and alternative lung cancer treatments 39 years ago in 1974. Back then that was a radical thing to do for treatment of such a disease. Today I feel like alternative and holistic cancer treatments are starting to become much more mainstream, thanks to the internet. Thumbs up to Al Gore! Kate and I had a great time speaking with Dr. Carl O' Helvie. At 81 revolutions around the sun, he has a lot of insight and wisdom to share especially when it comes to how he treated his lung cancer as well as how he prevents it from coming back again. He eats a lot of raw food, he eats lots of medicinal mushrooms, green juices as well as fruits, vegetables nuts and seeds. He's also a big fan of Vitamin B-17 (which is also known as laetrile or amygdalin) from raw apricot kernels. He has so much energy and is out there doing so much good work it blows your mind. There are people 10 years younger than him in senior centers and old folks homes who have diseases like Alzheimer's and dementia. It just goes to show you that if you take care of this wonderful energetic ecosystem called the human body, you can be happy healthy and vibrant at 81. Dr. O' Helvie is a true inspiration to us all to take care of our health and be a good steward of this body that God has given to us. This brings me to another point he made in the interview. He talked about how prayer, meditation and positive thinking had a tremendous impact on his ability to heal from lung cancer. As we know all disease really is caused by unresolved emotional trauma, conflict or stress. By living in communion with God, meditating and living stress/drama free we can begin to heal the root cause of all disease. Make sure to listen to this interview/podcast with Dr. Carl O' Helvie and pass it on to your loved ones if you think they'll benefit. We talk to many wonderful naturopathic doctors who have tremendous success with turning cancer around using natural methods. But it's quite another thing to talk with someone who has actually reversed such a nasty disease himself. That's why we put an entire section on our site called Natural Cancer Survivors so you can get some hope and positive energy from listening to these success stories! Enjoy! :) After you listen, comment below and tell us what you think! We discuss the following and so much more: How faith, positivity and energy played a role in his healing Which foods cause cancer to grow The popularity of the ketogenic diet for cancer treatment How sugar feeds cancer The effectiveness of IPT (insulin potentiation therapy) Why he takes the mineral selenium every day The magical qualities of bilberry and aloe vera juice Why he likes Protocell and I mentioned the benefits of essiac tea And so much more! Guest Steve Helvie Panelists Eric Berry | Justin Dorfman | Richard Littauer Show Notes Hello and welcome to Sustain! The podcast where we talk about sustaining open source for the long haul. Our guest today is exceptional in many ways, so you don't want to miss this episode! On this episode, we have Steve Helvie, VP of Channel Development for the Open Compute Project (OCP). He helps to educate organizations on the benefits of open hardware designs and the value of “community-driven” engineering for the data center. Today, Steve tells us how the Open Compute Project started, how he got involved, how it generates revenue, what open hardware is, and the challenges he sees with open hardware. We also learn why Europe is always at the forefront of regulations when it comes to sustainability and designs. Download this episode now to find out much more! [00:00:39] Eric, Richard, and Justin tell us about their backgrounds since Steve was curious. [00:03:26] Steve tells us his background, what he does at Open Compute Project, and explains more about open hardware. [00:06:41] Steve mentions there are 200 projects in the Open Compute Project and Richard wonders what the minimum entry is, what you need to be one of these projects, and how much money is needed to think about having open hardware in his company. [00:12:04] Justin asks for Steve's insight on a supply chain attack when it comes to hardware and how does the OCP fix it. [00:14:56] Steve talks about sustainability with “save the earth and save money,” and how Europe is always at the forefront of regulations when it comes to sustainability and designs. [00:17:00] Steve had mentioned that he's invested in helping people have hardware and run hardware better for their own companies, and Richard sees this to be at ends with Cloud Native, so he asks Steve to talk about how he sees that conflict. [00:18:13] Richard wonders if Steve is helping to improve Uber's private cloud and partially the public cloud by allowing them to do work with OCP and with other managers, how has that not led towards a non-sustainable earth and how does he reckon with that conflict. [00:20:51] In talking about refreshing hardware, Justin tells us about a book he read called _Flash Boys. _He also tells us about how he talked to an ex-Googler when GCP was getting built, who told him that Google was importing thirty tons of hard drives every single day and asks Steve if this is a normal thing. [00:22:43] Richard wonders if a large amount of Steve's clients are Crypto. [00:23:37] Eric brings up Steve's background and wonders if he had an a-ha moment or was there a point in time where he thought this is bigger than just hardware. [00:26:00] Steve tells us besides memberships, how the OCP generates revenue. He talks about having to switch to virtual summits during COVID. The guys all chat about if they've seen memberships and activities increasing in the last year since going virtual. Steve shares a staggering number of virtual attendees at his recent event. [00:30:37] Richard wonders what challenges Steve sees for the entire field of open hardware. Steve mentions a great course he took on Open Source Technology Management that's worth checking out provided by Brandeis University. [00:35:29] Find out where you can follow Steve online. Quotes [00:08:02] “There is such a huge fear that someone's going to take my designs and copy them.” [00:08:28] “So, what big companies like, in any company really, is they like a dual sourcing strategy.” [00:08:40] “They like that one skew, give me consistency across the board that I can deploy in Asia, Europe, or America, but give me multiple suppliers that mitigates my supply chain risk.” [00:10:48] “The types of companies that are looking at Open Compute are companies that have an open source mindset, they have a Cloud Native mindset where software is going to define everything.” [00:11:26] “And that's the point of when that happens in industries you start to see this customer poll. It's happening now in Telcos. Fintech gets it, gaming gets it, traditional banking, traditional healthcare, insurance companies do not get it yet, but they will. It's going to come.” [00:14:32] “So, there's this second user economy or what we call circular economy that's happening now within what Google, Microsoft, Facebook, all the Hyperscalers now have a second use plan because they need to for sustainability.” [00:15:03] “What's happening in Europe is you have Europe is always at the forefront of regulations when it comes to sustainability and designs.” [00:15:21] “There are heat reuse out of data center initiatives. For example, the Netherlands, you cannot build a new data center in the Netherlands unless you have a heat reuse.” [00:19:11] “So, the only part that I can see that's redeeming about this fact is that OCP designs use a lot less energy between 30-50% less energy than a normal standard server.” [00:19:53] “We have large enterprises that are taking the hardware coming out of these Hyperscale Data Centers that oftentimes is less than three years old.” [00:20:02] “A lot of these Hyperscalers don't even keep their hardware for more than three years and they're out if it. That still has a lot of life for if I'm a small and medium sized business in anywhere else in the world, they can still use that hardware for five years.” [00:34:28] “Open software, you can crank through it, iterations, sprints. Open hardware, it's very dependent on chip cycles, product cycles, and yeah, it's a lot of hurry up and wait in hardware.” Spotlight [00:36:32] Eric's spotlight is Gitpod. [00:38:30] Justin's spotlights are Episodes 1-16 of Sustain the podcast are back home and Orbit. [00:38:59] Richard's spotlight is Strange Parts. Creating Ecosystems around open source standards and the Commons is a challenging task that has been taken strategically by many of the dominating brands of our times - such as Google with Android. For this reason, we wanted to feature one iconic project on the podcast that we often use as a yardstick when debating opportunities to develop truly open ecosystem strategies: the Open Compute Project Foundation, initiated by Facebook in 2011. Details on what OCP is and does will be shared directly during the podcast by our guests: Steve Helvie, VP of Channel, and Archna Haylock, Community Director at OCP. In his role, Steve helps to educate organizations on the benefits of open source hardware designs and the value of “community-driven” engineering for the data center. Archna, on the other hand, is responsible for the global community, and involved directly in its governance processes. In this inspiring conversation - we touch upon the topics of innovation, collaboration and industry change - and our two guests show how openness can provide solutions to an increasing set of global challenges. We explore what’s needed for organizations to collaborate in an open source way, how to view competitors in the ecosystem, and how the definition of a data centre has changed through emerging needs for circularity and sustainability. At the Center for Christianity in Business, we have luncheons twice per year where we have a speaker or panel of speakers discuss topics related to integrating biblical values in business. On this episode, you’ll have an opportunity to hear from the most recent panel, which consisted of extremely successful Christian women entrepreneurs about their experiences and lessons-learned in the business world. The panelists were: Tina Murray, President, Mind Dance Marketing, Inc. Leah Faul, Owner and Lead Digital Strategist, 15000 Cubits Bonnie Helvie, Owner and Executive Director of Bonnie Group and Market Partner at MONAT Global. The panel discussion was moderated by Sharon Saunders, Vice President for Advancement and University Relations, Houston Baptist University. I have attended many of these events at HBU, and I would say this one was my personal favorite. Now please enjoy this amazing episode.
