One of the most popular episodes of our pod was #12 from December of last year, "DECK THEM HALLS: CELEBRATING THE HOLIDAYS IN CLASSIC FILM." Because of the great feedback we got on that show (and because Steve and Nan are WAY behind on their holiday shopping), we're replaying that episode to celebrate the best time of year for holiday movies. We hope you enjoy it, and we'll be back next week with a brand new episode! Happy Holidays from all of us at "From Beneath The Hollywood Sign!" "DECK THEM HALLS: CELEBRATING THE HOLIDAYS IN CLASSIC FILM" (067/012) While chestnuts roasting on that open fire and sleigh bells ringing are nice, nothing gets you in the mood for the holidays like a good ole seasonal movie. Well, get ready to unwrap an early present from Steve and Nan as they share their favorite lesser-known holiday films. And along the way, they discuss everything from Clarence the Angel, French nuns, boxing nuns, ROBERT MITCHUM's drug bust, and millionaires tossing money out of their Park Avenue apartment window. Don't miss this holiday spectacular!  SHOW NOTES:  Movies Mentioned: I'll Be Seeing You (1944) Beyond Tomorrow aka Beyond Christmas (1940) Holiday Affair (1949) Come to the Stable (1949) The House Without a Christmas Tree (1972) The Bishop's Wife (1947) Sources: Christmas in The Movies (2023), by Jeremy Arnold Christmas In Classic Films (2022), by Jacqueline T. Christmas is in the can. New Years is just around the corner but it's still that most wonderful time of the year and your soon to be permanently renamed movie talk feed/show/pod is here with another Christmas classic featuring one of our favorites, Robert Mitchum. A fairly strange tale for the Hayes code time as two men, one a rich niceboy and the other a broke swaggart, are after the same single mother. It's a dirty game and Connie's rascal kid has a preference real quick. You know where this will go but it's an interesting journey to get there with some nice performances. Don Hartman's 1949 classic Christmas rom-com “HOLIDAY AFFAIR” stands out as worthy little charmer for the holidays. It also stars Janet Leigh & Wendell Corey who plays Carl who, despite being NOT the love interest, might be the nicest guy on the planet in 1949. Mitchum's “Steve” is not so nice in comparison but you know he's gonna get you outta them britches. Maybe even late era Mitchum when he was just walking around with those big glasses. He was also constantly drunk. He threw a basketball at a lady and knocked out her teeth. Does that eliminate him as our dawg? …not yet. The needs to be a deliberation period. For now let's discuss HOLIDAY AFFAIR! Yesterday we re-ran a conversation that Rob and Michael had about the 1949 movie Holiday Affair on Michael's old Sleigh Bell Cinema podcast. Today, it's another movie from the ‘40s and even more of a classic. From 1945, it's Christmas in Connecticut starring Barbara Stanwyck. Our guest for the episode was Noel Thingvall, who's also been on After Lunch a few times in the last couple of years.

This Christmas season on After Lunch - like with the last couple of years - we're going to be re-running a bunch of episodes from Michael's old Sleigh Bell Cinema podcast. This is going to be an especially busy year though, because we're running discussions of what we call Holiday Spirit movies.  Unlike Tangential Christmas movies, these are undeniably about the Holiday Season, but without a lot of fantastical elements like Santa or his elves and reindeer. If there's magic, it's going to be subtle or ambiguous. There are a lot of these movies though - it's easily the biggest category that we talked about on Sleigh Bell Cinema - so we're going to be running an episode a day for the next couple of weeks.    To kick this off, we want to start with a movie that Rob and Michael keep referring back to. In fact, it's come up in the last three episodes on the show. From 1949, it's Holiday Affair starring Janet Leigh, Robert Mitchum, and Wendell Corey. And featuring Colonel Potter himself, Harry Morgan, in a small role. It's one of Michael's favorite Christmas movies, but you'll have to stay tuned to find out what Rob thought. So please listen and enjoy and let us know whether you're Team Steve or Team Carl.

Film critic Marya E. Gates (RogerEbert.com, Vulture) joins Collin and Kerry for a deep dive into one of her very favorite films, "Holiday Affair," staring Janet Leigh, Robert Mitchum and Wendell Corey. While not one of the most popular of Christmas films, could it have influenced films such as "Sleepless In Seattle" and "Baby Boom"? What makes this love triangle so different from other rom-coms with a similar premise? How does one kiss smeone hard on the lips and not cause injury? All these questions, plus a stellar Book segment (three honest-to-God masterpieces).  Book films covered: Out of the Past (1947) Touch of Evil (1958) Rear Window (1954)

I think Rexall was the one sponsor most associated with the Phil Harris-Alice Faye Show due to the calming voice of Griff Barnett who was "your family druggist" and the voice of the Rexall commercials on the show. For a long time his voice reminded me of someone I had seen before, then it finally hit me, he was the guy that played Janet Leigh's father in the classic Christmas movie "A Holiday Affair" with Robert Mitchum. That was something that bothered me for years till I finally figured it out. The Phil Harris and Alice Faye Show and the Jack Benny Show were the 2 funniest radio shows on. They are literally for me laugh out loud programs. Enjoy a laugh today from the Library of Sound.

Confessions of a Closet Romantic

'Tis the season for my much-loved, annual classic holiday movie marathon. For me, film is richer in B&W, and you can't beat classic holiday movies for stirring inspirational monologues and heartwarming affection, love and romance. (CW: for a few mentions of suicide).https://www.confessionsofaclosetromantic.comMusic in this episode: Jazzy Bells by Dee Yan-Key is used courtesy of a Creative Commons license from the Free Music Archives. The sleigh bells sound effect is courtesy of a Creative Commons license from freesound.org.MoviesChristmas in Connecticut has so many funny and charming moments. The Man Who Came to Dinner is stagey and delightfully over-the-top. Here's the Christmas Eve scene when Lorraine Sheldon discovers that she's been pranked and didn't actually get engaged to a lord. Here's the whole sequence leading up to That Phone Call in It's a Wonderful Life. The rotary phones! The 78 records! People looking dignified and dressing up! Plus the sweet authentic sentiment--this movie represents pure love to me, and I never tire of it, no matter how many times I see it.Another delightful Jimmy Stewart holiday classic is The Shop Around the Corner. I've talked about this movie a few times,  because the rom com You've Got Mail is based on this charming story (see my Intimate Worlds episode). In Bell, Book and Candle,  Jimmy falls under the spell of Kim Novak on Christmas Eve.  I mean, who wouldn't?The lesser known Frank Capra holiday classic, Meet John Doe, is now in the public domain--watch the full movie here.Frank Capra intended to direct It Happened on 5th Avenue but it didn't happen--it still ends up being the most charming and affectionate holiday film he never directed. When a tramp squats in a 5th Avenue mansion around Christmastime, he changes the post-war lives of many other people--including the billionaire who owns the mansion.Cary Grant plays the charismatic angel Dudley who comes to earth at Christmas to help a struggling bishop in The Bishop's Wife. Dudley realizes if he wants to help the bishop, he needs to show him how to cherish and value his wife. There are many beautiful moments and scenes in this film, including this one performed by The Mitchell Boychoir. Heavenly.Janet Leigh plays a young war widow with an adorable son who works as a secret shopper at Christmas in Holiday Affair. After she meets a handsome salesman (Robert Mitchum) in the toy department, her whole world is turned upside down and she starts to reconsider marrying her steady boyfriend. The hopeful post-war sentiment of White Christmas moves me, no matter how many times I've seen it. The lush romance, music, gorgeous costumes and wintery Technicolor sets turn this movie into a holiday fever dream.Remember the Night is about a beautiful shoplifter (Barbara Stanwyck) taken home to Indiana for Christmas by a handsome district attorney (Fred MacMurray) who feels bad that she'll sit in jail over the holiday. It has everything you want in a holiday movie: redemption, forgiveness, a close-knit family, found family, small-town charm and warm romance.

"Holiday Affair" 1949 is an enjoyable film for the holiday season. There is excellent writing by Isobel Lennart, believable characters, solid production values and first-rate direction by Don Hartman. Actually these elements combine to make this a movie worth watching any time of the year.Among the believable characters is Robert Mitchum as Steve Mason the future builder of boats, Janet Leigh as Connie Ennis the loving mother of Timmy Ennis her 6 1/2 year old son played by Gordon Gebert, Wendell Corey as Carl Davis the well known Lawyer and possibly Connie's future husband, Henry O'Neill as department store owner Mr. Crowley, Harry Morgan as the patient but perplexed Police Lieutenant and a myriad of other cast members that do a superb job adding to the film's story. When released in 1949 the movie was not well regarded nor a financial success; however, in recent years it has become a holiday classic. Our best wishes for the season! Here’s the IMDB page for “Holiday Affair”Up next, “Mr Blandings Builds His Dream House”

It's Christmas time at Galaxy Nostalgia Network, and in the spirit of the season, we look back at some of our favorite classic holiday movies of the past. We remember such classics as "It's a Wonderful Life", and "Miracle on 34th Street", as well as a few others that may not immediately come to mind such as "The Shop Around the Corner", and "A Holiday Affair". Listen in as we review some great Christmas films of times past that are still very enjoyable. Next we talk about some of our favorite Thanksgiving and Christmas parades. Such parades as the Hollywood Christmas Parade, The Macy's Thanksgiving Parade, and The Rose Parade are all parades we recall, either seeing them in person and watching them on TV. Everyone loves a parade so join us for all the fun! Our Retro-Commercial is for Cheerios cereal. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from Galaxy Nostalgia Network!
