Rebinging Star Trek DS9: A Simple Investigation Hello Star Trek fans! Welcome to Season 5 episode 17 of Rebinge Deep Space Nine: A Simple Investigation! Time for Odo to get a girlfriend and it's played by a very human-looking alien named Arissa played by Dey Young. But, of course, nothing is truly simple because Arissa has a couple of big secrets. A Simple Investigation Odo meets a woman in Quark's bar and after she pays him a compliment, Odo seems to fall head over heels in love with her. After a few missteps, Odo does get the girl, but there are a lot of secrets for him to uncover. Ultimately it's a bit of a tragic love story for Odo but he does finally get to make out someone which seems to make him very (briefly) happy. What's this rebinge thing? It's a re-watch of a thing you've already seen but love to watch and talk about. We go deep with every episode, walking you through every scene and analyzing all of the characters and story lines. Please listen to some of our favorite episodes like Duet, The Visitor or Rejoined or our VERY SPECIAL episode: Star Trek First Contact. And be sure to listen to our previous episode S5E16: Doctor Bashir, I Presume. Next time... Join us next week for S5E18: Business as Usual. Rebinging Star Trek DS9: Doctor Bashir, I Presume Hello Star Trek fans! Welcome to Season 5 episode 16 of Rebinge Deep Space Nine: Doctor Bashir, I Presume! We move on from the very serious two-parter involving the Dominion into something less dramatic and certainly narrower in scope! Robert Picardo from Voyager fame joins us as the cantankerous Dr. Lewis Zimmerman intent on turning Julian into a holographic long term medical hologram! Also joining our extremely lively discussion this week is our favorite guest host, local artist Attiba Royster of the Teebs and Kid Phoenix Vs podcast. Check out Attiba's art here, it's pretty awesome! Doctor Bashir, I Presume Dr. Zimmerman has arrived to do an intense study into all things Julian and to do this he must interview everyone who knows Julian, including his parents. When Julian's parents arrive, Julian unravels a bit as we start to find some secrets in the Bashir family closet. There is also a B-story in this episode where Leeta (played by Chase Masterson) tries to get Rom's romantic attention and it does not go well. Rebinging Star Trek DS9: By Inferno's Light Hello Star Trek fans! Welcome to Season 5 episode 15 of Rebinge Deep Space Nine: By Inferno's Light! We wrap up our two-part story with lots of guest stars! We have Marc Alaimo as Gul Dukat, Melanie Smith as Ziyal, Andrew Robinson as Garak, JG Heltzler as Martok and Robert O'Reilly as Gowron. Not only do we need to survive the onslaught of Jem'Hadar ships from the end of last week's episode but we need to get Worf back to the Alpha Quadrant! By Inferno's Light We quickly put the death of Garak's dad behind us and try to figure out how to get the heck out of the internment camp. Back on the station we learn that Dukat has been up to no good for a long time and has aligned himself with the Dominion in order to become ruler of all of Cardassia (this seems like a very short-sighted plan). But maybe the biggest secret in this episode is the dark plan that Dukat and the Dominion have to destroy the Bajoran sun. Yikes! What's this rebinge thing? It's a re-watch of a thing you've already seen but love to watch and talk about. We go deep with every episode, walking you through every scene and analyzing all of the characters and story lines. Hello, Kaiju Lovers! And welcome to season three of The Monster Island Film Vault! We begin 2022 with a brand new series focusing on giant monster films from the U.S.A., “Ameri-kaiju.” To launch this special occasion, Nate is joined by returning guest/YouTuber/author Ryan “The Omni Viewer” Collins (and his kaiju-muppet-thing sidekick, Snazzy, who butts heads with Nate's sidekick, the intrepid producer Jimmy From NASA) to discuss the prototypical kaiju film, The Lost World (1925). You're about to hear one of the most MIFV of MIFV episodes: literary analysis, film appreciation, witty banter, hilarious puns, and wild history. What more could you want? Before the broadcast, Nate meets Dr. Nick Tatopoulos, the leader of H.E.A.T., in the KIJU breakroom (and pronounces the man's name correctly) while fighting with the coffeemaker. Nick talks about his hostile history with the Island's new boss, Cameron Winter—and then the crooked tycoon calls them on Nate's phone! The Omni Viewer's YouTube channel. This episode's prologue, “Dr. Tatopoulos, I Presume,” was written by Nathan Marchand. Guest stars: R. Villers as Nick Tatopoulos Jack “GMan” Hudgens as Cameron Winter Additional music: “Stomp the World” by Jim Latham “Pacific Rim” by Niall Stenson Sound effects sourced from Freesound.org. You may remember last year Ashley read a series upon the recommendation of Diane from @shapedbystoriesdiane (and co-host of the amazing new podcast, The Thing About Austen) that took over her life. That series was Lady Sherlock by Sherry Thomas. The sixth book in the series, Miss Moriarty, I Presume? hit shelves November 2 and Ashley, Phoebe, and Diane got the opportunity to sit down with Sherry Thomas and hear all the juicy details.
Since Arthur Conan Doyle first created Sherlock Holmes, the great detective has gone through many permutations and been the subject of much study. As Sherry Thomas admits in this latest New Books Network interview, finding a new element to explore is not easy. But she has managed to discover one—perhaps an angle that is particularly fitting in this age of gender fluidity, although the Lady Sherlock series draws much of its punch from and plays off the stereotypes of the past, in this case Victorian England. In Thomas's reimagining of the great detective, Sherlock Holmes is not only a fictional character but a front for the real detective, the disgraced younger daughter of a poverty-stricken baronet. Charlotte Holmes has an incisive intellect, an unflappable temperament, little respect for convention, and a love of books—traits that undermine her intended purpose in life as defined by her parents: to marry a wealthy, titled man. Charlotte cuts a deal with her father: if she's still unmarried at twenty-five, he will fund her education so that she can earn her living as the headmistress of a girls' school. But when Dad reneges on the deal, Charlotte takes matters into her own hands, with disastrous (from her parents' perspective) but delightful (from her own) results. This is the setup in the first book of the Lady Sherlock series, aptly titled A Study in Scarlet Women. By the time this sixth book rolls around, Charlotte has made a name for her alter ego and had several run-ins with the infamous Professor Moriarty and his underlings. In Miss Moriarty, I Presume? (Berkley Books, 2021) the tables are turned, and the professor seeks out Charlotte for assistance in finding his missing daughter. Unless, of course, the mission is simply a trap aimed at getting the meddlesome Charlotte out of the professor's life permanently. It's best to read this engrossing series from beginning to end, as each book builds on those that came before. But watching Sherry Thomas turning the Holmes canon on its head is tremendous fun, and if you tear through the novels as I did, it won't take long to reach Miss Moriarty, I Presume? Sherry Thomas is the author of historical romances, YA fantasy, and the Lady Sherlock series, which begins with A Study in Scarlet Women. Find out more about her at https://sherrythomas.com. The Two Dukes of Wyndham series by Julia Quinn was a delight to read one after the other! In “The Lost Duke of Wyndham,” highwayman Jack turned out to be the true duke. His cranky, dowager duchess grandmother just needed proof of legitimacy, but first she needed to catch him. It was his attachment to Grace, the dowager's companion, who he would give up the dukedom for.In “Mr. Cavendish, I Presume,” the current duke, Thomas, was potentially going to lose his dukedom and lose Amelia, his long standing fiancée who he finally started having feelings for.If you want humor, book one is for you. If you want angst, book two is for you. The two books happen concurrently and have a lot of the same dialogue so we suggest reading both. This week, John and Olivia are joined by the brilliant Kellan (@ThriftyTrekkie) to talk about Deep Space Nine's Doctor Bashir, I Presume? , in which Julian Bashir evades immortality as a hologram thanks to the fact that his parents are, in fact, terrible people who should never be forgiven for what they did to him. Also, Robert Picardo is creepy to Leeta, because why not.
No one is who they seem this week on DS9! First up, when the Emergency Medical Hologram's creator chooses Julian to be the template for the next, long-term version we discover there's more to the good Doctor than meets the eye in "Doctor Bashir, I Presume". After that, a would-be femme fatale finds her way into Odo's life, but the mystery to her is even deeper than she realizes in "A Simple Investigation". Also this week: A special visitor, drowning Richard, and bedroom eyes. [Timestamps: "Doctor Bashir": 07:46; "Investigation": 1:02:32]
Doctor Lewis Zimmerman arrives at DS9 with an offer Dr. Bashir can't refuse: immortality through holography! The only catch is that Julian's parents will be interviewed during the process, and that could reveal his deepest secret. Doctor Bashir, I Presume, on this week's Mission Log. Implications of Genetic Enhancement. Ever since “Space Seed” the idea of genetic enhancement has been something that is viewed almost universally as a negative within the Star Trek universe. After the devastation wrought by Khan and his fellow enhanced humans in the Eugenics Wars, genetic enhancement was outlawed by the Federation. But then came Deep Space Nine and Julian Bashir to cast shades of grey on the subject. In this episode of The Orb hosts Christopher Jones and Matthew Rushing follow up their commentary for “Doctor Bashir, I Presume” with a broader discussion of genetic enhancement and the implications of altering the natural course of evolution. Using the episode “Statistical Probabilities” as a basis for discussion, we delve into both the negative and positive aspects of genetic manipulation, the Asimov-inspired plot that gave us one possible solution to the Dominion War, and whether or not people like Julian Bashir are the likely future of mankind.
Doctor Bashir, I Presume Commentary. What would a Star Trek cast be without a doctor? From Bones to Beverly to Bashir, the first three series brought us great human physicians. Then came Voyager and the concept of medicine in the hands of a hologram. The Holographic Doctor was yet another great character, but the EMH was never intended for extended use. Deep Space Nine picked up the concept and extended it to the logical next step—the LMH or Long-term Medical Hologram. The model? Why Julian Bashir, of course! In this episode of The Orb hosts Christopher Jones and Matthew Rushing bring you a commentary for the fifth-season episode “Doctor Bashir, I Presume” and discuss Robert Picardo's guest appearance, Zimmerman's fascination with Leeta, Bashir's friction with his family, his relationship with Miles, and of course the major course change for his character as we learn that he is genetically engineered.
