In A Room of One's Own, Virginia Woolf famously imagined what might have happened if Shakespeare had a sister who was as gifted a writer as he was. She invents “Judith” Shakespeare, and concludes that this female genius would have been doomed. But that's not the end of the story. If Woolf had read Mary Sidney, Aemelia Lanyer (nee Bassano), Anne Clifford, and Elizabeth Carey, she might have thought differently about the fate of her fictional Judith Shakespeare. Ramie Targoff's new book, Shakespeare's Sisters: How Women Wrote the Renaissance, explores the lives and works of those four women.. Targoff tells us about them and reflects on why reading their work is so important. Ramie Targoff teaches English and Italian literature at Brandeis University. As of Sunday, the city had 50,000 migrants in its care, including in local hotels and temporary shelters, and 49,700 local homeless residents, NBC4 reported. The influx of migrants crossing the southern border illegally has led to more migrants arriving in the Big Apple, some of whom have been bused in by Republican Texas Gov. Greg Abbott. The city has turned the historic Roosevelt Hotel, which closed three years ago, into a migrant shelter. “My heart breaks a little bit, and I have these conflicting feelings,” Deputy Mayor Anne Williams-Isom said during a tour of the hotel, according to NBC4. Democratic New York City Mayor Eric Adams has floated asking his residents to help shelter migrants in their homes, he said in early June. “It is my vision to take the next step to this, to go to the faith-based locales and then move to private residents, there are residents who are suffering right now because of economic challenges,” Adams said at the time. “They have spare rooms, they have locales and if we can find a way to get over the 30-day rule and other rules that government has in its place, we can take that $4.2 billion, $4.3 maybe now, that we potentially will have to spend, and we can put it back in the pockets of everyday New Yorkers, everyday houses of worship, instead of putting it in the pockets of corporations,” Adams added. Adams has also taken matters into his own hands by busing some of the arriving migrants to New York suburbs, including an area near the northern border, where the Daily Caller News Foundation previously observed some of them crossing into Canada illegally. Adams has also transported dozens of migrants to Republican-run states, like Florida and Texas, South America and one to China, Politico reported Friday. Adams’ office didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment. https://dailycaller.com/2023/06/26/fox-news-fires-remaining-tucker-staffers/ Fox News Fires Remaining Tucker Staffers In Show’s Final Stroke Fox News has fired the remaining staffers from Tucker Carlson’s show as the network announces a new primetime lineup, Daily Caller confirmed Monday. The network let go of at least nine remaining staffers, including long-standing producers, in a move described as “shockingly callous” by one former Fox News producer who spoke to the Daily Caller. “Some of the producers fired have been at Fox for well over a decade,” the producer told the Daily Caller. Another former Fox producer told the Daily Caller that staffers on Carlson’s team were repeatedly told following his departure that their jobs were safe, including as recently as last week when two of Carlson’s producers left the network. The remaining staffers were told they could apply for any jobs throughout the company, the former producer told the Daily Caller, noting that employees who once staffed Bill O’Reilly and Dan Bongino’s show were simply reassigned on other shows after both hosts left the network. Staffers told the former producer the terminations were clearly an “anti-Tucker move to purge any of his remaining stamp he had on the network as Fox begins this new lineup change.” The news comes after Fox News announced that Jesse Watters will replace Carlson in the 8:00 p.m. time slot. Watters, who originally started his career at the 8:00 p.m. time slot hosting a Man on the Street segment during Bill O’Reilly’s program, is slated to take over the hour, Fox News said in a press release. Laura Ingraham will take over Watters’ 7:00 p.m. time slot while Greg Gutfeld will move his show to the 10:00 p.m. time slot. Sean Hannity will remain in his 9:00 p.m. slot. Fox announced in late April it was parting ways with Carlson just days after the network announced it was also parting ways with Dan Bongino. Carlson has since started hosting his own show on Twitter, prompting a public legal battle between Fox News and the Daily Caller co-founder. Fox News issued a “cease and desist” to Carlson in mid-June after accusing him of breaching his contract by violating its non-compete clause when he posted the first episode of his show on Twitter. https://www.npr.org/2023/06/27/1149982782/julian-sands-dead-a-room-with-a-view Actor Julian Sands found dead in California after going missing on hike The San Bernardino County Sheriff's office has confirmed the death of Julian Sands after human remains were found on Southern California's Mount Baldy. He was 65 years old. He was hiking Mount Baldy when his family reported him missing on January 13, 2023. Sands had a wide and varied career but was best known for his role in the 1985 movie A Room with a View, starring opposite Helena Bonham Carter. Sands learned acting at the Central School of Speech and Drama in London. In A Room with a View, he played George Emerson, a love interest to the young upper-class Lucy Honeychurch, played by Carter. In 1986, he told NPR in an interview that he was well aware of the class dynamics at play in the movie. "Nobody's actually seen to do anything other than live some leisurely life which allows them to pursue their own indulgences," he said. Sands' acting career brought him an eclectic array of roles. His film credits include Arachnophobia, Leaving Las Vegas, and the Jackie Chan movie The Medallion. On TV, he appeared in small roles on shows such as Castle, Smallville and Dexter. In Season 5 of the action drama 24, he played the main villain Vladimir Bierko, a terrorist in possession of a deadly nerve gas. He loved the outdoors. In a 2020 interview with The Guardian, he was asked when he was happiest. His answer was: "Close to a mountain summit on a glorious cold morning." Now in entertainment news… https://boundingintocomics.com/2023/06/26/the-flash-collapses-in-its-second-weekend-at-the-box-office-with-massive-72-drop-analyst-predicts-film-will-lose-at-least-150-million/ ‘The Flash’ Collapses In Its Second Weekend At The Box Office With Massive 72% Drop, Analyst Predicts Film Will Lose At Least $150 Million Ezra Miller’s The Flash completely collapsed at the box office with an enormous 72% drop from its opening weekend. The Flash had a long row to hoe after it’s extremely poor opening weekend of $55 million at the domestic box office. And it does not look like it’s going to be reaping anything but losses following its second weekend collapse of 72%. The-Numbers reports the film only grossed $15.2 million in its second weekend despite adding another 22 more theaters compared to its first weekend. The per theater gross declined from $13,000 in its opening weekend to $3,587 in its second weekend. The film’s second weekend much like its first underperformed predictions. Box office tracking website Box Office Pro predicted the film would have a 69% drop and bring in $17.3 million. The-Numbers predicted the film would only have a 59% decline and would bring in $22.5 million. Comparing the film to other DCEU films, The Flash is one of the worst performing films as it stands right now. The only films it’s outperformed at the worldwide box office are Birds of Prey, The Suicide Squad, Wonder Woman 1984, and Shazam! Fury of the Gods. Following this second weekend, box office analyst OMB Reviews predicts The Flash will only bring in a total gross between $300 million to $400 million worldwide in its entire theatrical run. However, he goes on to note, “roughly between $300 and $350 million dollars if the film performs as a typical bad movie.” That means it will likely stay in the same position it is on the DCEU list given Shazam! grossed $363.5 million and Black Adam brought in $391.2 million. OMB Reviews then points to the reported cost of the film being between $200 million and $220 million. He notes this means the film will likely lose around $150 million due to his estimated predictions that the film’s total cost with marketing is approximately $330 million. Factoring in the film’s split with theaters, he predicts the film’s break even point is $550 million. Thus if the film performs at the top of his estimates at $400 million, it would lose $150 million.

Today we celebrate the 17th-century philosopher and naturalist, who was the first woman to make a living from her writing. We'll also learn about the forensic botanist who solved the crime of the decade in the 1960s in Australia. We’ll recognize the Herb Society’s project that now occupies two and a half acres at the U.S. National Arboretum. We look back at an entry about winter from one of America’s most beloved naturalists. We Grow That Garden Library™ with a book that Martin Crawford, author of Creating a Forest Garden, called a “must-read for anyone interested in agroforestry, forest gardening, or utilizing forests for specialty crops.” And then we’ll wrap things up with the story of a vine discovered by a Harvard botanist and his son as they were walking to a Red Sox game back in August 1988. Important Events December 15, 1673 Today is the anniversary of the death of the 17th-century philosopher, poet, scientist, fiction-writer, naturalist, and playwright Margaret Cavendish. Margaret’s perspective on the natural world helped shape our modern viewpoint. And it should be noted that Margaret was the first woman to make a living from her writing. Yet Margaret has always been an easy target for ridicule; her points were often lost in confusing verse and the novelty of her ideas. In one of her poems, she compared the brain to a garden: The Brain a Garden seems, full of delight, Whereon the sun of knowledge shineth bright, Where fancy flows, and runs in bubbling streams, Where flowers grow upon the banks of dreams. There various thoughts as several flowers grow: Some milk-white innocence, as lilies, show, Fancies, as painted tulips’ colors fixed, By Nature’s pencil neatly intermixt; Some as sweet roses, which are newly blown, Others as tender buds, not yet full-grown; Some, as small violets, much sweetness bring. Thus many fancies from the brain still spring. — Margaret Cavendish, Similarizing the Brain to a Garden One of my favorite poems by Margaret is called The Duchess to Her Readers. In this poem, Margaret shares her appreciation for her husband; theirs was a love marriage, and William helped Margaret with her work. A Poet am I neither born nor bred, But to a witty poet married: Whose brain is fresh and pleasant as the Spring, Where Fancies grow and where the Muses sing. There oft I lean my head, and listening, hark, To catch his words and all his fancies mark: And from that garden show of beauties take Whereof a posy I in verse may make. Thus I, that have no gardens of my own, There gather flowers that are newly blown. — Margaret Cavendish, The Duchess to Her Readers Virginia Woolf was not a fan of Margaret. In “A Room of One’s Own,” Virginia wrote, “What a vision of loneliness and riot the thought of Margaret Cavendish brings to mind! As if some giant cucumber had spread itself over all the roses and carnations in the garden and choked them to death.” December 15, 1908 Today is the birthday of the Australian botanist and forensic botanist Joyce Winifred Vickery. 1960 was a pivotal year in Joyce’s career. In 1960, all of Australia was focused on the building of the now famous Sydney Opera House. And to pay for the construction, the government of Australia held a lottery. A man named Bazil Thorne spent three pounds - a quarter of his paycheck - to purchase the winning ticket. After Bazil’s win of 100,000 pounds, his eight-year-old son Graeme was kidnapped and brutally murdered. The crime stunned the country. But ultimately, it was Joyce Vickery's forensic work that helped the police solve the case. In the Graeme Thorn kidnapping, Joyce had been tasked with identifying two plant particles from the boy's clothing. Vickery recognized them as parts of landscape or garden plants - distinctly out of place from the scrub area where Graeme’s body had been found. Instead, Joyce matched the plant debris to a False Cypress and a Smooth Arizona Cypress outside the suspect’s home. And soil scraping showed pink limestone mortar that ultimately matched the mortar on the suspect’s brick home. Joyce’s work and testimony helped prove that 34-year-old Stephen Bradley had committed the heinous crime. He was sentenced to life in prison. December 15, 1978 On this day, construction began on the National Herb Garden at the U.S. National Arboretum. Since 1965 a National Herb Garden was a dream of the Herb Society based in Kirtland, Ohio. After the Herb Society came up with $200,000 for the garden, Congress matched the funds. And so, the National Herb Garden was a gift from The Herb Society of America to the American people. Located in Washington D.C., the garden occupies two and a half acres of the over 400 acres in the U.S. National Arboretum. As the most extensive professionally-designed herb garden in North America, the garden was intended to inspire people to plant herbs in their own gardens and to use herbs in their cooking. The National Herb Garden comprises annual, perennial, and woody herbal plants situated in three sections: a knot garden, a rose garden, and specialty gardens. The knot garden is made up of Japanese holly, dwarf blue cypress, and dwarf arborvitae. The Rose Garden is a nod to the critical role of roses in herbalism. And finally, the ten specialty gardens are oval-shaped and have themes. There’s the Dioscorides (“DEE-scor-ee-days”) Garden. Dioscorides discovered an early version of aspirin when he found that sap from white willow tree bark and leaves helped with colds, body aches, and fevers. And so, the Dioscorides Garden grows the herbs described by Dioscorides. There is also a Colonial Garden and a Dye Garden that grows herbs to color fabric and textiles, and other fascinating gardens like the Native American Garden. There are even gardens devoted to Modern Botanicals, Culinary and Industrial plants, as well as Fragrance, Oriental, and Beverage Gardens. The National Herb Garden was dedicated on June 12, 1980, and celebrated its 40th Anniversary in 2020 during the pandemic. Unearthed Words Nature in winter is like a great toy shop at night. The doors are locked, and only at the mysterious depths of the shop does some cold light burn. If we press our noses on the pane, we can just make out the forms of bigger objects. All the tenderer delights have been taken from the window — flower and moth and bird. What is there left for us to play with? Winter is a study in halftones, and one must have an eye for them or go lonely. Trees, skies, and even the black, white and gray and rufous ("roo-fiss") colors of winter birds and little mammals are all subdued, modest, economical of a lofty beauty. Now one may make friends with owls and mice, with the different colored stems of willows and corner ("core-nul") and sassafras and spicebush, with winter buds in their furry scales, with the berries that the birds seek out, with the bark of trees and the prints of the four-footed. — Donald Culross Peattie, American naturalist, and writer Grow That Garden Library Farming the Woods by Ken Mudge and Steve Gabriel This book came out in 2014, and the subtitle is An Integrated Permaculture Approach to Growing Food and Medicinals in Temperate Forests. In this book, you're going to learn about Forest Farming. According to Ken and Steve, Forest Farming is one of many agroforestry practices that is specifically focused on growing crops underneath the forest canopy of an existing forest. I love Ken and Steve's book because they teach us new and exciting ways to relate to the forest. This book is an excellent resource for gardeners looking for something new and different to try, especially if they live near a forest or some woods. Ken and Steve share many examples of forest farming. You'll meet a couple who cultivate shiitake mushrooms alongside wild mushrooms in the cool shade of a Hemlock Forest. You'll visit a delightful forest in February and watch sap get collected from the sugar trees to make maple syrup. These are just a few of the ways that forestry and farming - and gardening - can go hand-in-hand; they are not at odds. Since the beginning of time, people have sustained themselves from tree-based systems, and Ken and Steve will help you learn how to return to the forest. Farming the Woods teaches gardeners how to maintain a healthy forest while growing a wide range of food, medicinal, and other non-timber products. This book was the first in-depth guide for farmers and gardeners who have access to an established woodland and are looking for productive ways to manage it. And in case you're wondering, forest crops include American ginseng, shiitake mushrooms, ramps (wild leeks), maple syrup, fruit and nut trees, ornamental ferns, and more. This book is 384 pages of must-read wisdom for gardeners looking to diversify their gardening practices and incorporate agroforestry, permaculture, forest gardening, and sustainable woodlot management. You can get a copy of Farming the Woods by Ken Mudge and Steve Gabriel and support the show using the Amazon Link in today's Show Notes for around $30 Today’s Botanic Spark Reviving the little botanic spark in your heart The other day, I stumbled on this Q&A featured in The Arizona Daily Star: “Question: A recent gardening article referred to a form of Boston Ivy known as "Fenway Park." The writer described it as a sprout from the famed dark green vine that clings to the wall of Boston's baseball stadium. Can you clarify? Perhaps the Ivy came from Chicago's Wrigley Field... Answer: The ivy didn't come from Wrigley Field, but neither did it come from Fenway Park. Peter Del Tredici of the Arnold Arboretum in Boston said the ivy came from a building a block or two away from Fenway Park. Peter saw it when he and his son were walking to a Red Sox game in August 1988. Peter noticed that the top portion of some Boston ivy growing on a building near Fenway was bright yellow, instead of the normal darker green. Peter asked permission of the building's owner to take some cuttings from the yellow part and then propagated the plant at the arboretum's greenhouses. Later, Peter asked the Red Sox owners for permission to name the resulting ivy "Fenway Park." Peter’s Boston Ivy species is now bred and sold as Parthenocissus tricuspidata (“parth-in-oh-SIS-us tri-cus-puh-DAY-tah” ‘Fenway Park.’ Thanks for listening to The Daily Gardener. And remember: "For a happy, healthy life, garden every day."

Oscar P’s Time Machine Coming at’cha like a Mack tank, New York DJ Oscar P (originally from the Dominican Republic) just runs you over with his “Time Machine” bringing back the tribal thump and funk of the best of house music from the ‘90s. “In the story line, I build a time machine and I travel back to 1996 and hop to 2009 to visit my favorite clubs of the era... as well as the Djs that played them,” muses Oscar. Tenaglia, Morales, Vega, “It's an adventure. “Time Machine The Album” pays tribute to the club scene Oscar P came up in, before Obama, before the war, before the Internet, before the itunes store. A solid line-up of featured guests, production partners and original material breaking down the musical and cultural barriers between classic house, the big room alternative, and Latin influences, “Time Machine” is Oscar P’s first artist driven album in ten years and is actually the 200th release on Open Bar Music. “Crispified,” the first single from the album “Time Machine” (Out Feb 2009), is a party anthem about international clubbing, co-written with Alex Almeida and co-produced with Davdison Ospina. It features a stacked lineup of remixers for global consumption with vocals by…. oh yes, Oscar P himself."We wrote ‘Crispified’ in Miami at WMC 2008,” notes Oscar. “It took us about seven months to get the track recorded and released due to our schedules.” The single features a strong package with mixes by D: Fuse & Hiratzka, Benny Royal, Karol XVII & MB Valence, Dj Spin & Troy Manner, Kid Chris, Davidson Ospina, Sirkhan, Colin Sales, Scott Watson, Cortes, Sound Control, Alex Almeida, Blackliquid, Wil Alonso, Juan Kato, & Groovegetters. "I do a lot of vocals on this album,” pointed out the writer-producer whose production and remix credits include: Physics, Gala, Kristine Elezaj, The Peech Boys, George Krantz, 2 Unlimited, Swing 52, Arnold Jarvis, Doug Lazy, Kym Syms, & The Beloved, as well as working behind the scenes with acts like Crystal Waters, 2 In A Room and Lidell Townsell back when dance artists went gold and platinum. "So even people who know me will be a bit surprised.” There’s also the much buzzed about title track of the album "Time Machine," which is slated to become the second single off the CD. “Today’s generation missed this entire period of NY house,” Oscar points out, “so it was an impulse track.” I heard Mike Dunn's track plugging the Chicago pioneers and it inspired me to plug the guys I grew up with and represent New York. Thanks Mike, see what you started?" The album features Jaime Lee Wilson, Christian Alvarez, Tyrah Morena, Blackliquid, Physics, Marco Petralia as well as Open Bar Music standout Ama Zedrey. Oscar's label Open Bar has also seen success worldwide combining the right artists & remixers on releases by Black Fras, Stadi, Masi & Mello, Angel Manuel, featuring the work of Tom Novy, Davidson Ospina, MTV & Mark Knight, Big World, Richard F, Granite & Phunk, Rulers Of The Deep, Groove Junkies, Knee Deep, Sueno Soul, & Solitaire. So what’s the secret? Oscar P points to a great team including, long time partner Carlos Ortiz, online specialist Jessica Bendig and in-studio collaborator Davidson Ospina credited with bringing Oscar back to the recording studio after a five-year retirement. Oscar credits Davidson for getting him excited about making music again. "I had been quiet for many years just running the marketing company, Media Services NYC and our record labels, Rumba Jams and Open Bar Music with my partner Carlos Ortiz. I was still traveling and active as a DJ, so being in the studio really didn't interest me the way it does today. " "I've worked with a lot of talented people, and that certainly rubs off on you and gives you the itch,” admits Oscarwho also highlights his twenty year production track record before folks forget that he’s a DJ and producer first before becoming a label president.
