Bill Belichick and staff recently landed three defensive lineman to continue to bolster that side of the trench and adhere to their mantra since they've arrived in Chapel Hill - build from the inside out.  Inside Carolina's Jason Staples joins host Tommy Ashley to discuss and analyze the most recent three - Joseph Mupoyi, Isaiah Johnson and D'Antre Robinson.  Staples also offers his opinion on the ‘portal trade' aspect of the last three weeks comparing what the Tar Heels lost to the spring portal to the aforementioned gains. (00:00 - 20:55) - Indianapolis air quality has improved due to last nights storms. Busy day for news in sports, the Colts released Isaiah Rodgers and Rashod Berry yesterday. Jake believes that there are several players who probably have passively and unintentionally violated the NFL's gambling policy. How many players have placed a wager on a baseball game from a team facility thinking it was okay? Bad weather cancelled Marc's Savannah Bananas trip last night. Jake went to see Noel Gallagher of Oasis last night. Pacers (20:56 - 25:06) - Morning Checkdown (25:07 - 46:53) - Greg Rakestraw of the ISC Network and Indy Eleven joins the show. He and Jake immediately go back and forth on the news of Isaiah Rodgers suspension. Rakestraw believes that if Rodgers is allowed back in the league in the near future, he stands a chance to sign with a team again. This story is going to keep people's attention for awhile, possibly the next season or two, but players might start making mistakes again because of how available gambling is and how loose the rules are currently. Rakestraw goes over the six rules that the NFL has on gambling currently. Marc gets a quick word on Rakestraw's view of Pacers free agency. (46:54 - 1:10:00) - The second hour kicks off with Jake's view on how people treat Independence Day. Fireworks are great for 4th of July, but not at 1a.m. Chicago has a street race coming up, but the event isn't bringing a lot of people or business to Chicago. Taylor Swift brought more people to Chicago than the upcoming race will. Callers weigh in on their views of 4th of July, the Chicago Cubs, and Isaiah Rodgers. (1:10:01 - 1:20:35) - More callers phone into the show. Topics include Veterans and their relationship with fireworks, Isaiah Rodgers suspension, and Colt's season expectations. Jake details the different moralities involved in sports betting as an athlete. This scandal could affect the NFL's future if it is ever revealed that betting on games played a role in anyone's performance during a game. (1:20:36 - 1:33:07) - A caller verifies that Producer Sam's earlier statement on Oasis's hit song Wonderwall was true. That same called lobby's for Jake's fandom for their high-school basketball team. IndyCar talk about getting them to race again in Loudon. Race talk about how people view Romain Grosjean and Pato O'Ward. (1:333:08 - 2:00:56) - Joel A Erickson of the IndyStar joins the show to go into deep detail about Isaiah Rodgers year-long suspension from the NFL. Was Erickson surprised when Rashod Berry was released as well? Berry was suspended indefinitely even though he could have only bet one NFL game as a player last year. Erickson notes that betting on any game inside a team facility is earning players a six-game suspension, betting on the NFL is earning the year-long suspension. Erickson thinks that compared across multiple leagues the NFL actually has pretty relaxed gambling restrictions. The NCAA won't allow you to bet on any sport they govern. The Colt's cornerback room is young and inexperienced, they need to sign a veteran to help out the defense. (2:00:57 - 2:09:15) - Pop Quiz (2:09:16 - 2:20:56) - Marc's Top Ten European Countries he wants to visit. It's far from a secret that the Arizona State Sun Devils football team fielded a bad defense in 2022, but things will be changing for the better in 2023. While improvements have been in dire need throughout the unit, the secondary in particular looks rejuvenated and ready to be special. Returning are stars Ro Torrence, Chris Edmonds, and Jordan Clark who were diamonds in the rough a year ago. There are also returning guys like Ed Woods and Isaiah Johnson, who will be projected in important roles this year. Several transfers from the NCAA Transfer Portal join the roster as well, including Xavion Alford, Sharmi Simmons, and most recently Demetries Ford as well as some freshmen like Montana Warren and Keith Abney. When looking at this secondary, it's not hard to feel excited about its potential, and host Richie Bradshaw believes that the Sun Devils could be on the cusp of a special secondary in 2023. Advancements in 3D printing technology have dramatically increased the potential deadliness of homemade firearms. Advances in homemade manufacturing techniques greatly facilitate the probable proliferation of these untraceable, high-powered 3d printed firearms. New 3d printed firearms represent a much more significant threat compared to the previous 3d printed weapons that had a limited effective range of fewer than 100 yards. In this week's episode, Isaiah Johnson from the Weapons and Tactics team joins Salomon Montaguth to discuss the impact it will have globally.

Isiah is in the 8th grade and squats 255, so you know he's got exceptional written into his future. He plays defensive end and wide receiver but loves to hit people on the field more than he loves receiving the hits. I wanted to ask him about how he got started in football and it's just one day he got to play and experience it, and the rest was history. If you could learn something from all these interviews, I think you'll never know what you like until you try to get out there and experience it. Isiah could become a pro football player, but what impresses me the most is that he's got a plan B set for his life. When I asked him about his college of choice if he had to choose one, it would shock you because, spoiler, it's not a football powerhouse. Similar to the offense, the Arizona State Sun Devils football team has a lot of new faces on the defensive side of the ball. After losing several key players from 2021 to both the 2022 NFL Draft and the NCAA Transfer Portal, the 2022 Arizona State Sun Devils' defense will look very different from its 2021 counterpart. Unlike the offense, however, we aren't as concerned with how the defense is going to roll out for 2022. The defense has some important faces returning to the middle of the field in Merlin Robertson and Kyle Soelle. The defensive line and secondary both have some intriguing depth with the former perhaps being the deepest unit on the entire Arizona State Sun Devils football roster. The defense isn't without some questions that need answering, obviously. For one, how will this deep defensive line look? Will we see a core starting unit of veteran guys like Michael Matus, Nesta Jade Silvera, and Travez Moore? How much will young guns such as Omarr Norman-Lott or B.J. Green fit into the equation? We can't forget about the other several talented players behind them, as well, so how will this defense utilize its deep line? Meanwhile, at linebacker, we know that Robertson and Soelle will start, but who's the third linebacker next to them? Is it Kyle's brother Conner Soelle? Is it Will Shaffer? Is it Caleb McCullough? And finally, in the secondary, there are lots of fun faces to fancy throughout, but who will start on the boundary? Jordan Clark will have the nickel role to himself, but who could start outside? Timarcus Davis, Keon Markham, and Ro Torrence seem like the most likely guys, but could a youngster like Isaiah Johnson surprise? Continuing our discussion about the musical The Color Purple (which is also about to become a movie musical starring Fantasia Barrino, Danielle Brooks, Colman Domingo, and Corey Hakwins), this week Ruthie recommends Joshua Harmon's new Off-Broadway play Prayer for the French Republic.  The Color Purple—originally a novel by Alice Walker—was adapted into a musical and first opened on Broadway in 2005 and revived in 2015 and depicts the abusive relationship between Celie and Mister (among many other things). But is it as simple as “Mister is a bad guy?” Last week in “THE COLOR PURPLE and Generational Trauma,” we spoke about what it was like for actor Isaiah Johnson to play Mister—why he wanted to, how it was healing, and how it was challenging. Isaiah also pointed out that generational trauma is not unique to Black Americans and Prayer for the French Republic reminded me of that.   Prayer takes place in 2015-2016 Paris and 1945-1946 Paris, depicting multiple generations of French Jews in the same family. Rising anti-Semitism in Paris confronts the present-day Benhamou family, stoking fear and worry, and forcing them to wonder “When do you leave? When are the signs enough to tell you to leave? And where do you go? Where is safe?” Listen to this full episode for the connections between these two theatrical pieces, the communities they portray, and why you should run to see both. The music played during the introduction, transitions and closing was produced by Xavier's own Carolyn Youngquist, a senior music education major. Newswire would like to give a special thanks to XUFM and the Communications department for recording equipment and space.

Jimmy, Vic, Tashan & Ted break down the Raiders 31-26 Week 9 win in LA vs the Chargers at SoFi Stadium. Raiders hold on late with 2 great defensive plays by Isaiah Johnson in the endzone in the last 15 seconds of the game. The last play was called a TD on the field, but was reviewed and was overturned to end the game and give the Raiders the W. The defense got some pressure on Herbert and that was a good thing to see after struggling with pass rush the past few weeks. Crazy end to the 2nd q and the Raiders gave away some points to be down 3 at half. Raiders came out on FIRE in the 3rd q and Carr led the way on the opening second half drives. When Carr is fired up and aggressive, good things usually happen for the Silver and Black. Agholer & Booker both had really good games on offense. Series PremieresOur Boys (HBO)Set in the summer of 2014, the series is based on the true events which led to the outbreak of war in Gaza. When three Jewish teenagers are kidnapped and murdered by Hamas militants, Israel is shocked, shaken and furious. In an apparent response to the horrific act, the burned body of 16-year-old Palestinian Mohammed Abu Khdeir is found in a forest on the outskirts of Jerusalem. As a terrorism agent and his team at the Jewish Division of Shin Bet investigate Mohammed's murder, the parents of the slain teenager begin their long and anguished journey toward consolation and justice.David Makes Man (OWN)"David Makes Man" is a drama series created by Academy Award-winning screenwriter Tarell Alvin McCraney ("Moonlight"). Set in South Florida, this lyrical coming-of-age story centers on a teenage prodigy named David who lives in the projects but attends a magnet school for academically gifted youngsters. David, played by newcomer Akili McDowell, straddles two different worlds, navigating between the streets that raised him and the school that offers him a way out of poverty. His balancing act comes at an emotional price which is portrayed in this original series on OWN that delves into issues of race and identity. It features an ensemble cast that includes Alana Arenas, Phylicia Rashad and Isaiah Johnson. Dee Harris-Lawrence ("Unsolved: The Murders of Tupac and the Notorious B.I.G.") serves as showrunner and executive producer alongside McCraney, Mike Kelley, Melissa Loy, Michael B. Jordan, and Oprah Winfrey. Why Women Kill (CBS All Access)A darkly comedic drama detailing the lives of three women living in three different decades: a housewife in the 60s, a socialite in the 80s, and a lawyer in 2018, each dealing with infidelity in their marriages. Season PremieresSuccession (HBO)Although he has no plans to step aside as the head of Waystar Royco, the international media conglomerate controlled by his family, aging patriarch Logan Roy is contemplating what the future holds. He has lingered in the limelight longer than even he thought he would, and now family members want to run the company as they see fit. Despite a best-laid succession plan, tempers flare over Logan's intentions. Kendall Roy, Logan's eldest son from his second marriage and a division president at the firm, is the heir apparent. As Kendall attempts to solidify his eventual takeover, he and the three other Roy children face a difficult choice as company control and family loyalties collide. The Terror: Infamy (AMC)Set during World War II, the haunting and suspenseful second season of the horror-infused anthology The Terror: Infamy centers on a series of bizarre deaths that haunt a Japanese American community, and a young man's journey to understand and combat the malevolent entity responsible. The season chronicles Chester Nakayama and his friends and family from Terminal Island, California, as they face persecution from the American government and battle the evil spirit that threatens their future. The Terror: Infamy tells the often overlooked story of Japanese American internment and asks what it truly means to be an American. From 1942 to 1945, more than 145,000 Japanese Americans and Japanese Canadians were forced from their homes and into internment camps by their respective governments, simply because of where they or their ancestors were born. Their story is one of perseverance in the face of injustice.Mindhunter (Netflix)Catching a criminal often requires the authorities to get inside the villain's mind to figure out how he thinks. That's the job of FBI agents Holden Ford and Bill Tench. They attempt to understand and catch serial killers by studying their damaged psyches. Along the way, the agents pioneer the development of modern serial-killer profiling. The crime drama has a strong pedigree behind the camera, with Oscar-nominated director David Fincher and Oscar-winning actress Charlize Theron among the show's executive producers. Series FinalesThe Rook (Starz)Myfanwy Thomas wakes up in the rain beside London's Millennium Bridge with no memory of who she is and no way to explain why she is surrounded by dead bodies. She discovers she is a high-ranking official in Checquy, Britain's last secret service agency for people with paranormal abilities. Myfanwy makes it her mission to find out who she is, who wiped her memory and why she is a target while trying to navigate the complex world of a secret agency and the people who are a part of it. The series is based on the novel of the same title by Daniel O'Malley.Legion (FX)David Haller is a troubled young man who was diagnosed with schizophrenia as a child. Shuffled from one psychiatric institution to the next, in his early 30s, David met and fell in love with a beautiful and troubled fellow patient named Syd. After a startling encounter with her, he was forced to confront the shocking possibility that the voices he hears and the visions he sees may actually be real. Syd led David to Melanie Bird, a demanding but nurturing therapist who heads a team of specialists -- Ptonomy, Kerry, and Cary -- each of whom possesses a unique and extraordinary gift. Together, they helped David to recognize and harness his hidden abilities and unlock a deeply suppressed truth -- he had been haunted his entire life by a malicious parasite of unimaginable power. Sea Hawkers Podcast for Seattle Seahawks fans

Before discussing some better than expected performances, particularly at safety, a few news items jumped out in the news today as the Seahawks reportedly met with Kyler Murray at the combine. Rob Staton from seahawksdraftblog.com is back on the show to remind us why that was a smart move even with Russell Wilson locked in at quarterback. Wilson is going into his final year and Joel Corry said on KJR Monday that Russell's contract will need to start around $35 million per year. The Seahawks also announced that they've placed the franchise tag on Frank Clark ahead of Tuesday's deadline. Jachai Polite reportedly did not interview well, but Rob thinks the reports could be based on Polite reaction following his talks with teams. However, scouts are calling him on bailing on the workouts and that could be what causes his stock to tumble a bit. There were a number of safeties that improved their stock in a class that was not expected to be as athletic as they proved to be on the final day of the NFL Scouting Combine. There were three safeties that ran in the 4.3s or better. The fastest player of the weekend was a safety who ran 4.29. Juan Thornhill had an impressive 44-inch vertical to go along with his 4.4 speed. Rob says there's one safety to look at as a possible safety to cornerback convert, similar to Tre Flowers last year for Seattle and that's USC safety Marvell Tell. Taylor Rapp of Washington had an impressive day, topping the field in the short shuttle, a drill that measures short-area quickness. Among the cornerbacks, there were five who tested very well and also fit the Seahawks profile: Mike Jackson, Miami; Isaiah Johnson, Houston; Lonnie Johnson, Kentucky; Justin Layne, Michigan State, and Ken Webster of Mississippi St. Of all those players, Rob says Lonnie Johnson would be the player most likely still around in the range that Seattle may be interested in taking a corner. The others could be going in the first two rounds of the draft. Rob offers some final thoughts on the class as a whole and the guys discuss where Seattle may be most likely to go while trying to project 2-3 years out. One of our listeners on YouTube says Khalil Hodge is a Seahawks linebacker and Rob says there is a lot to like about him and could be a potential late-round prospect for Seattle. Isaiah (Hamilton, The Color Purple) plays George Washington on our tour and was a part of the show during its infancy stages when it was The Hamilton Mixtape.  He comes a long way from Broadway (Anchorage, Alaska) and his route to get to where he is makes for quite the tale. Isaiah has a passionate stance on the role of the actor in society and a wonderful sense of humor. Rory and Isaiah also solve the mystery of the shaking stool. You'll have to listen to understand that one!

The guys return with great sports sadness to discuss a heartbreaking 4-3 walk-off loss at Rice which saw the Owls win the Silver Glove Series for the first time over the Coogs since 2013. But this episode is not without happy Cougar baseball talk as the guys also cover a slugfest of a road series win at Memphis. To close out the Cougar baseball talk, the guys preview Sam Houston State and bring on frequent Pawdcast guest J.P. Gooderham of FearTheWave.com to preview Tulane baseball. Also, the Red/White Spring Football game was this past Saturday and the guys were there to take in the culmination of Major Applewhite's first spring practice as Cougar head coach. Sam gets a little "blue" about the iffy state of the passing game and everyone is very effusive about Isaiah Johnson's new position. FINALLY, the guys take listener questions about Cougar Athletics in the debut #AskSamOrI segment!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ST149: NAIA firsts with St. Andrews, Ottawa and Williams Baptist and an interesting story about Concordia's Ceron Franci

Hey folks, the Short Time Wrestling Podcast is now available as a standalone app for your Apple iOS devices and Android platforms. That's right, go to www.mattalkonline.com/iosapp to download the FREE app for your iPhone or iPad and if you want to head over to the Google Play store and get the app for your Android devices, go to www.mattalkonline.com/androidapp. Some notable firsts and a crazy story about a young man still learning how to wrestle emerged from the 58th annual NAIA National Wrestling Championships in Topeka, Kansas on Friday. One of the most interesting stories is from North Carolina native Ceron Francisco, who came in unranked and now he's wrestling in the semifinals. He started wrestling as a junior in high school, but an injury cut his season short. His senior year was his first full year of wrestling and now, as a sophomore needed a wildcard into the tournament, he's one win away from the finals. I'll also talk with Williams Baptist head coach Kerry Regner. He brought four wrestlers to the tournament in the program's first year and 125-pounder Isaiah Johnson will be the school's first All-American after earning his way into the semifinals. Ottawa's Kevin Andres qualified two wrestlers and 141-pounder Tyler Hinton earned All-American honors by pinning returning All-American A.J. Valles in the blood round. St. Andrews coach Joe Baranik has coached at the Division I level and at the high school level, but heavyweight Denzel Vaughan moved into the semifinals giving the program its first NAIA All-American. Started as a Division II program nine years ago, the school reclassified to the NAIA and Vaughan, a Virginia native, had to rally to get the win.
