The Do One Better! Podcast – Philanthropy, Sustainability and Social Entrepreneurship
John Craven, former Director of the UK's Social Mobility Commission and current Executive Officer of System 2 – a registered charity in Australia – explores social mobility from numerous angles, including education, employability, social networks and intergenerational dynamics. Among the various insights discussed, we explore how the school readiness gaps successfully tackled during children's early years can widen again in primary and secondary education. We also look at social mobility from a corporate angle and explore what companies can do in their recruitment and internal audits to ensure excellence not just in recruitment but also throughout career progression. This is a highly informative episode for anyone who cares about social mobility. Thank you for downloading this episode of the Do One Better Podcast. I love talking about metacognition, in hopes of improving how I think, how I diagnose, and how I learn. Dr. Smoller loves to teach and is interested in learning theory, and he has active research experience in learning/teaching visual recognition through pattern recognition, fast thinking. And yet, algorithmic thinking (slow thinking) is important, too. Our conversation is based on a lecture he gave at the recent March, 2024 International Society of Dermatopathology meeting. Don't miss this conversation! Dr. Bruce Smoller MD trained in anatomic and clinical pathology at Harvard's Beth Israel Hospital and in dermatopathology with Dr. Scott McNutt at Cornell Medical School/ New York Hospital. He has worked at Stanford University, rising to the rank of Professor of Pathology and Dermatology as well as at the University of Arkansas, where he was Chair of the Department of Pathology and the Director of Dermatopathology from 1997 to 2011. In 2011, he became Executive Vice President of the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology. Since 2014, he has been Professor and Chair, Department of Pathology and Laboratory Services and Professor of Dermatology at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. Dr. Smoller is a former Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Cutaneous Pathology and served as the President of the American Society of Dermatopathology, receiving the Nickel Award, which recognizes lifetime excellence in teaching, from the American Society of Dermatopathology. He received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the College of American Pathologists in 2022. He has written over 300 articles and has primary involvement in 18 books.

THE KINGDOM-CHURCH SYSTEM
In this podcast episode, Jamie Shilanski is digging into the the power of confirmation bias and its role in becoming a better financial advisor. Using astrological signs, Jamie illustrates how confirmation bias influences our beliefs about ourselves. She draws on Angela Duckworth's research, explaining the interplay between system one (instantaneous, subconscious) and system two (slower, intentional) thinking. She explores how this concept extends to marketing and buying decisions, revealing that people predominantly rely on System 1 thinking due to its quick, lazy nature. Brand recognition and trust play significant roles in this process. To connect with clients, Jamie suggests understanding their System 1 thinking, recognizing their intuition, and leveraging the principle of moving towards pleasure or away from pain. She shares a practical approach to marketing by categorizing attributes like intuitive, brand recognition, conscientious, instinctive, and emotional reference on a spectrum between pleasure and pain. Simplifying rather than overcomplicating, Jamie emphasizes the importance of focusing on the basics in marketing, offerings, and customer experience. Optimize your approach by aligning with clients' intuitive thinking and addressing their pleasure or pain points. Dr. Jason Lee has written and presented on how we think, cognitive bias in medical diagnosis, and errors in the pathologic pathway of a biopsy from clinic to final report. The latter was recently published in the Journal of Cutaneous Pathology. It is truly a pleasure to hear Dr. Lee talk with ease about errors, including his own. Dr. Jason B. Lee, MD is Professor, Director of the Jefferson Dermatopathology Center, Director of the Dermatopathology Fellowship, and Director of the Jefferson Pigmented Lesion Clinic at Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University. He interned at the University of California, Irvine and then did his residency and fellowship at Thomas Jefferson University Hospitals. He has a recent article in the Journal of Cutaneous Pathology that focuses on error in the pathologic diagnostic pathway.
Anyone who makes critical decisions needs to be aware of dual process theory and the heuristics we use and are subject to. Dr. Pat Croskerry, Dr. Christopher Chabris, and Dr. Itiel Dror are all experts in critical thinking about how our minds work. This episode is also available for Yale CME credit (1.0 hour). This is episode 2 of 8 in the Framework Series: The second system in the framework to become the expert in your body is far more obvious and familiar to you. Fuel. However, I'll preface with just because it is obvious and familiar does not mean that you have a healthy understanding of this system. Why would you? The information that is fed to you, to all of us, in the standard American diet (SAD) is founded on old science, enormous marketing and lobby efforts from the food industry, and cultural norms and beliefs. Do you feel like you are constantly being told different facts and studies about what is or isn't healthy to eat? Fat is bad, no some fat is good… Fructose is bad, wait, fructose is the natural sugar in fruit and I thought fruit was good… Drink milk for strong bones, no dairy causes cancer… You need to increase your protein to build muscle, eat more meat. To add insult to injury you get drug into the dogma of certain diet programs and the vilification of their “non-approved foods”. It's the all-or-nothing approach that gets results for the short term but isn't sustainable so you rebound back with a vengeance, right back to SAD. I'm thinking of diet camps like Atkins, Vegan, Keto, Paleo, Raw, Carnivore, etc. Yes, it is true that more and more is being understood about the nutrients of certain foods and therefore the benefit to the body. Yes, it is true that more and more is being understood about the way the body interacts with and uses the food you eat. So as I go into this system I ask that you empty your cup (remember lesson 5 from 8 Lessons Lupus Taught Me?) and be open to learning how it applies to YOU as you become the expert in YOUR body. I ask for permission to remind you of things you may already know as well as things that may be new to you or challenge your beliefs. How do you know your beliefs? Look at what you are eating (or not eating) and you will get a glimpse of your beliefs about food.

If you've ever been faced with an important decision when time was scarce, information was incomplete, or tempers were running high, you'll know that it's difficult to make a good choice. Now imagine a decision that has implications for the entire world, and the people facing that decision are 500 feet below the surface of the ocean in a nuclear-armed diesel submarine that is overheating and running out of power. In this episode of Choiceology with Katy Milkman, we look at decisions under pressure and how our thinking process is affected by stress. We begin in the Sargasso Sea, just off the coast of Florida, in October 1962. It's the height of the Cold War, and the Cuban Missile Crisis is bringing the U.S. and the Soviet Union closer to open conflict. John F. Kennedy has ordered a naval "quarantine" around Cuba after the discovery of Soviet missile installations there, and the Soviets have responded by sending a squadron of submarines to the area. Those submarines were ill-equipped for the warm waters around Cuba, and the squadron had little to no contact with Moscow. And they were being hunted by the American navy. It was a recipe for disaster.Dr. Svetlana Savranskaya tells the story of two of the Russian submariners in the fleet, one who demonstrates the dangers of making decisions under extreme pressure and the other who proves why it's best when cooler heads prevail.Dr. Savranskaya is director of Russian programs at the National Security Archive at George Washington University. You'll also hear an American perspective on this dangerous military interaction from a man who was there. Gary Slaughter served as a communications officer on the USS Cony during the Cuban Missile Crisis and is the author of Sea Stories: A Memoir of a Naval Officer.Next, Dr. Modupe Akinola joins Katy to discuss the mechanics of decision-making under stress. You'll hear how your stress system prepares you to act but also suppresses your ability to think clearly. Dr. Akinola offers ideas on how to prepare yourself for decisions and minimize the negative effects of stress in her paper "Thriving Under Pressure."Modupe Akinola is an associate professor of management at Columbia Business School, director at the Sanford C. Bernstein & Co. Center for Leadership & Ethics, and host of the TED Business podcast. Finally, Katy presents useful advice on being decision-ready and avoiding the hot-headed choice.Choiceology is an original podcast from Charles Schwab. Do you know the HOW of making decisions? This is for everyone, as we all make decisions every day. Additionally, diagnosis is a decision, and it is one of the most treasured skills of physicians. To optimize decision-making and diagnosis, we must know about dual process theory and JDM bias. If you are not sure what those terms mean, listen in! We made every effort to break these complex topics down to a simple 15 minutes. Tune in for Pat's final thought, which relates to how improving our knowledge of JDM bias might help prevent the extreme of diagnostic failure. Nobel prize winner behavioral economist, Daniel Kahneman's remarkable work brought the concepts of System 1 and System 2 into the mainstream. Contrary to the conventional wisdom which associates human capacity with rational thought and logical thinking (features of system 2), our system 1 (the autopilot) has a much stronger hold on our psyche. It is only the slower and deliberate System 2, or Executive Function, when engaged in conscious self-regulation can overrule the intuitions and freewheeling impulses of the System 1. So why not focus our attention on building System 2?On this episode, author, researcher, neuropsychologist, Diplomate of the American Academy of Pediatric Neuropsychology and professor at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, Dr. George McCloskey returns to discuss life-long implications of strong and well-developed Executive Function skills that open up the capacity to override reflexive thoughts and intuitive judgement and transcend personal limitations.
