Tenements, Towers & Trash: An Unconventional Illustrated History of New York City (Black Dog & Leventhal, 2017) is a comically illustrated chronicle of a young woman's exploration of the metropolis, its streets, shops, subway, garbage dumps and apartments (inside and out). A flaneur par excellence, cartoonist Julia Wertz, strolls through her beloved Greenpoint and Carroll Gardens , then over the Bridge to the East Village, up to Harlem, and the Bronx calling attention in cartoons and precise drawings to what you might overlook––curbs, pavements, lamp posts. fire alarms and building facades. She pops into old drug stores, and movie theaters, ever on the lookout for material evidence of the vanishing city. In recalling Kim's Video, Optima Cigars, and pinball, she risks lapsing into nostalgia. But in summoning up the lives of difficult, dangerous, and intrepid city women––abortionist Madam Restell, muckraking reporter, Nellie Bly, Typhoid Mary and the murderous Lizzie Halliday, she reminds us that especially for the gentle sex, “life back in the day” was not so great. Dertil kommer en række udenlandske udgivelser: Kentaro Miuras klassiske Berserk, Taiyo Matsumotos nyklassiker Sunny, Julia Wertz' Impossible People - sæsonens bog? God sommer!!

It’s been nearly five years since we sat down with Julia Wertz, and naturally plenty has changed. Her latest book, Tenements, Towers and Trash is a veritable love letter to New York City, written after the cartoonist had moved back home to California. The book is a history of the city, told through obsessively detailed architectural renderings of buildings. It the same funny cartoon story telling that put her on the map in her long running strip, Fart Party, while exploring far more meticulous black and white line drawings. In her return to the show, we weigh the benefits of living in New York vs. San Francisco, discuss her newfound (and only slightly reluctant) passion for meditation and mindfulness, talk Tinder and find out what’s next for the artist.

Her new book, Tenements, Towers and Trash: An Unconventional Illustrated History of New York City, came out earlier this month from Black Dog and Leventhal Publishers. As the subtitle suggests, this is a different kind of history, a guide to the Big Apple's present as well as its past, investigating its architecture, its businesses, its facades, its entertainment venues, and the many colorful figures who have populated its boroughs. The guys talk with Julia about how different this book is from her previous works -- e.g., Drinking at the Movies, The Infinite Wait and Other Stories, Fart Party -- which are primarily autobiographical. For this project, the author considered herself an urban explorer, forgoing the inward gaze and focusing instead on the city that she called home between 2007 and 2016. Tenements, Towers and Trash includes a variety of stories that compose its past, and punctuating the text is a series of before-and-after illustrations of storefronts and city blocks that underscore New York's ever-changing nature. This isn't a nostalgic look back at what once had been, but a chronicle of a dynamic urban space in the process of becoming. And of course, the book has more than its share of Julia's poignant, even laugh-out-loud, humor.

The Emotionary: A Dictionary of Words That Don't Exist for Feelings That Do (Razorbill) Feeling guilty about wanting to just stay home and see no one? Guiltroversion. Are you ever introduced to someone, and immediately forget their name, seconds after they’ve told you? Namenesia. If you have ever struggled for the perfect word to describe a feeling or situation you were experiencing, The Emotionary: A Dictionary of Words That Don’t Exist for Feelings That Do by Eden Sher and illustrated by Julia Wertz, is your hilarious guide to those feelings. All of her life, Eden Sher, has suffered from dyscommunicatia (n. the inability to articulate a feeling though words). She decided last year that whenever she had an emotion for which she had no word, she would make one up. The result of this is The Emotionary, which lives at the intersection of incredibly funny and very useful. Illustrated by acclaimed graphic novelist Julia Wertz, The Emotionary is chock full of words you always wanted/never knew you needed often accompanied by illustrations of hilarious and all-too- familiar situations. From irredependent (adj. unable to ask for help under any circumstances) to fauxbration (n. the phenomenon of feeling your phone vibrate, often out of desperate expectation, when in fact no one is trying to contact you and you will probably die alone), The Emotionary will help you put all your complicated feelings into words, so you can recognize them for what they are. Eden Sher is an actress best known for her role as Sue Heck on the nationally syndicated TV series The Middle. The Middle is the lead-in to Modern Family and has an average of 7.5 million viewers tuning in for the past 6 years. Eden has been nominated for a Critics' Choice Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series four times, winning in 2013. She is also the voice of Star on the animated series, Star vs. The Forces of Evil. The Emotionary is her first book. Julia Wertz has published five graphic novels, including Drinking at the Movies and The Infinite Wait, and does monthly history comics for the New Yorker and Harper's Magazine.

Tomboy (Zest Books) Razorcake and Skylight Books are teaming up to present graphic novelist Liz Prince, presenting her new graphic memoir Tomboy!  Growing up, Liz Prince wasn't a girly girl, but she wasn't exactly one of the guys either (as she learned when her little league baseball coach exiled her to the distant outfield). She was somewhere in between. But with the forces of middle school, high school, parents, friendship, and romance pulling her this way and that, the middle wasn't exactly an easy place to be. Tomboy follows award-winning author and artist Liz Prince through her early years and explores—with humor, honesty, and poignancy—what it means to “be a girl.” From staunchly refuting ”girliness” to the point of misogyny, to discovering through the punk community that your identity is whatever you make of it, Tomboy offers a sometimes hilarious, sometimes heartbreaking account of self-discovery in modern America. Praise for Tomboy “Liz Prince tells gender norms to eat dirt. A delightful, thoughtful, and compulsively readable memoir. And an important one.” —Ariel Schrag, author of Adam and Potential  “Liz Prince may have been an uncertain, confused kid, but she's a confident and sincerely expressive cartoonist. Tomboy is a funny and relatable look at what every child has to deal with at some point—figuring out who you really are inside, when everyone else only sees what they think you should be on the outside.” —Jeffrey Brown, author of Clumsy, Jedi Academy andDarth Vader and Son “It's hard to imagine anyone failing to be charmed by this entertaining, clever, and genuinely funny memoir of growing up with gender identity confusion. Even this pretty unconfused regular old dude found plenty to identify with in Liz Prince's story of adolescent bafflement, exploration, and discovery—all delivered, like all the best such stories, with a light touch, wry wit, understated irony, and not one iota of preachiness. Meaning: I'm a fan. Go Liz!” —Frank Portman, author of King Dork  “Tomboy is a thoughtful, honest look into the evolution and acceptance of personal gender identity, as told by a smart-mouhed punk named Liz Prince. I wish it had existed when I was in high school.” —Nicole Georges, author of Calling Dr. Laura “Liz Prince portrays the awkwardness and humiliation of childhood with wonderful (not to mention painful) accuracy. Any kid that picks up this book is going to be privy to secrets most of us don't learn until it's too late, and any adult who reads it will be reminded of an essential truth: that's it's okay to be exactly who we want to be, no matter how weird everyone else thinks we are. Tomboy isn't a self help book, but it should be.” —Julia Wertz, author of Drinking at the Movies and The Infinite Wait “It's not very often you read a goofy coming-of-age comic written with an astutely critical lens… and then there's Liz Prince'sTomboy. By tackling everything from Green Day to girl-hate, Prince does a kick-ass job at dissecting gender politics (and playground politics) through riotous anecdotes from her childhood, making this feminist inquiry, well, fun.” —Suzy X., illustrator at Rookie Mag  “Navigating life as a young tomboy would have been a lot easier if I'd had Liz's brave, hilarious, and honest story to guide me. Reading this book will make weird kids like us feel a little less alone.” —Melissa Mendes, author of Freddy Stories  Liz Prince's first book, Will You Still Love Me If I Wet the Bed?, was nominated for several awards and won the Ignatz Award for Outstanding Debut in 2005. Born in Boston, MA, she grew up in Santa Fe, NM, and has been drawing comics since the third grade. She has since produced many of her own comics and mini-comics, which mix her real-life foibles with charming cartooning and comic timing. Fans have described her work as being "cute," making them feel "warm and fuzzy," or simply being "too much information." She now lives outside of Boston and drinks more than her fair share of coffee.

Make It Then Tell Everybody

Julia Wertz and Dan Berry talk about the links money & creativity, alcoholism & comics and abandoned asylums & comics. Julia is the author of The Fart Party vols 1 & 2, Drinking at the Movies and The infinite Wait. She also explores abandoned buildings and writes about them.
