The Mars Perseverance Rover has collected vital data for studying the red planet, including audio recordings. So how does sound travel on Mars?
From Mars rovers that were the size of a microwave oven back in the 90s, we now have the Perseverance rover that's the size of a car. And a helicopter. We take a look at the amazing Mars 2020 project that is taking Mars exploration to the next level. It's collecting samples for future return to Earth and the Ingenuity helicopter is flying through the Martian atmosphere - carrying a small piece of cloth from the Wright brothers' plane.Follow Cosmic Coffee Time on Twitter for some special contenttwitter.com/CosmicCoffTimeYou can request a topic for the show! This week's guest is Melony Maharaachchi, who co-founded Cambridge Global Ventures INC after a decade in the US Aerospace Industry; from Elon Musk's Spacex programme to Boeing to Nasa's Jet Propulsion Lab where she designed the wiring system for the spaceship Rover that landed on Mars in 2021 Growing up in Sri Lanka Melony had two brothers so her girl friends weren't allowed to come round to play. Instead Melony played with her brothers' friends. This was good training when she entered the male dominated world of Mechanical Engineering at UCLA. It was an aha moment that made her change to robotics engineering, going from the U.S. Aerospace industry as an industry tech leader managing projects for Elon Musk's Spaces, to Boeing Commercial & NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab, Pasedena. Finally she landed the role of Lead Mechanical Engineer for Mars Perseverance Rover which landed on Mars in 2021. After ten years in the industry she decided to found her nonprofit organization in 2015, iSTEM Without Borders, focusing on underprivileged students and women to help them pursue and thrive in STEM careers. Also mentor startups in UK Cambridge cluster and SLAASCOM Women Technopreneur forum in Sri Lanka.Life as an entrepreneur can be a hair-raising ride, so the lessons from a rocket scientist turned businesswoman are all too relevant!Thank you, Melony for your contribution to the tech community and for being a role model for young women around the world and for showing us that anything is possible when you set your vision and take consistent action towards it.You can find out more about Melony's work on www.cambridgeglobal.com and follow her on Linkedin @MelonyMaharaachchiJoin Lou on Linkedin, or sign up to her mailing list for her newsletter and a free bite-size short course on how to be a podcast guest. The first black-and-white image from NASA's Ingenuity Mars Helicopter, April 19, 2021. (Photo courtesy of NASA/JPL, and used with permission.) This podcast and blog are not, in any way, affiliated with, nor endorsed by, NASA nor the Jet Propulsion Lab. For NASA's Ingenuity Mars Helicopter, the original plan was, simply, a technology demonstration. NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory Robotics Technologist Gerik Kubiak and his colleagues created the four-pound helicopter for an experimental test flight, according to JPL's website. Their goals: to demonstrate miniaturized technology in an autonomous aircraft while establishing whether the little helicopter could survive Mars' environment. And the ultimate objective? Initially, according to JPL's fact sheet, scientists hoped to have Ingenuity perform up to five test flights, in thirty Martian days. Fast-forward to today. So far, Ingenuity has flown a total of thirteen test flights. Since arriving on the Martian surface aboard the Mars Perseverance Rover in February, 2021, Ingenuity has steadily "pushed the envelope". Her inaugural flight, on April 19th, lasted just over 39 seconds, as Ingenuity climbed to a prescribed maximum height, then hovered 10 feet above the Martian surface. NASA;s flight log shows Ingenuity's flight times and distances progressively lengthening. May 7, 2021, marked Ingenuity's fifth successful flight. Designed to fly for ninety seconds, Ingenuity has exceeded that figure numerous times during her test flights. At the time of our conversation, her longest logged flight was the twelfth: 169.4 seconds. And the miniature helicopter (which,, NASA says, weighs less than two pounds on Mars!) has been sending back both black-and-white and color images of her groundbreaking journeys. On the day of Ingenuity's twelfth flight, Gerik talked about the process of designing the spacecraft, shared a closer look at the missions and discussed his favorite moments as Ingenuity made spaceflight history. On thie edition of Over Coffee® we cover: How Gerik first became involved in the robotics field, as his professional path; How he began, working with the Ingenuity helicopter; Some of the challenges involved, in preparing Ingenuity to fly on Mars; A closer look at the technology that's enabling Ingenuity to fly; Gerik's recollections of the first day Ingenuity flew; How the helicopter is communicating, from Mars to Earth; Why Ingenuity's twelfth mission was one of the most challenging; A closer look at the initial mission plans, and the ways in which the helicopter has surpassed them; How the helicopter can "troubleshoot" if a problem occurs; Gerik's favorite part of getting to work on the helicopter and operate it; What he especially enjoyed learning, that he didn't know previously,, about robotics, from operating Ingenuity on Mars; A quick look at some possible future plans; Some of the images that Gerik found most breathtaking; Where to find educational resources connected with Ingenuity's flights. (These include a downloadable 3D model on NASA's "Mars Helicopter" page!)

Last month, the Perseverance rover successfully landed on Mars following a six-and-half-month journey from Earth through space. Over the next Martian year (or, over 600 days here on Earth), the rover will search for signs of ancient life, collect data about the climate and geology on Mars and pave the way for human exploration of the Red Planet. This mission is a group effort by the scientists, engineers, technologists and more at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Jim Rinaldi, former CIO and current Chief Information Technology Advisor at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, joins Juliet to discuss IT's role in a successful mission, and how his team at JPL supports mission personnel from early planning stages through landing and beyond.

On February 18, 2021, a team of women and men at NASA successfully landed the Perseverance Rover on the planet Mars. The Perseverance Rover and accompanying Ingenuity helicopter were launched from Earth on July 30, 2020 and touched down on the surface of Mars on February 18, 2021 at 3:55pm EST. The Mars 2020 mission was led by NASA's Mars Exploration Program and NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). The success of the Mars mission builds on the successes of previous American trailblazers like John Glenn, the first American to circle Earth's Orbit, which he circled three times in 1962, as well as Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, the first humans to land on the moon, which they successfully completed aboard Apollo 11. Approximately 6 hours after landing, Neil Armstrong became the first man to walk on the moon on July 20, 1969. Even the mistakes and lessons learned from the Apollo 13 “Houston, we have a problem” mission have helped prepare us for the success of the Mars 2020 and 2021 mission. As a reminder, the Apollo 13 mission was the mission where the astronauts were not able to touch down on the moon because of oxygen and electrical power generation problems. However, the crew was still successful in returning to Earth, alive. The scenario which unfolded aboard the Apollo 13 mission was even turned into the 1995 adventure drama movie, “Apollo 13,” starring Tom Hanks, Kevin Bacon and Ed Harris. This type of human achievement, ranging from Apollo 11 to Apollo 13 to the recent successful Mars 2020 mission, including the human-history shattering landing of the Perseverance Rover on the planet Mars is only possible when humans of all political parties, of all creeds and passions, from all walks of life, from all ethnic backgrounds, consider one another as friends and neighbors, without suspicion and mistrust, and collaborate together toward a common goal. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/henry-gindt/support

During its harrowing descent to the surface of Mars last Thursday, NASA's Perseverance rover captured video that the agency is calling "How to Land on Mars." The video, along with other newly released footage, gives earthlings back home a better sense of the sights and sounds on the red planet. Cameras on the rover show for the first time the perspective of a spacecraft landing on Mars. The video begins 230 seconds after the rover entered the Martian atmosphere, with the inflation of the rover's parachute 7 miles above the Martian surface, and ends with the rover touching down on the surface. The first audio of Mars was also picked up briefly by a microphone on the rover, which captured a few seconds of a Martian breeze and sounds of the rover operating once it reached the surface. To learn more about how CNN protects listener privacy, visit cnn.com/privacy

Climate Disinformation on Facebook / Beyond the Headlines / Tracking Migratory Species from Space / Clean Energy in Space to Save Planet Earth / The Sirens of Mars The Mars Perseverance Rover is set to leave Earth in late July or early August with the mission of helping to find out if there is evidence of past or present life on Mars. We'll talk with an astrobiologist who is part of the mission team and also the author of the new book, "Sirens of Mars". Also, with an historic SpaceX launch and several Mars missions underway, 2020 is proving a pivotal year for space exploration. How innovations in space technology such as solar charging stations that beam energy back down to Earth, and mining hard rock materials in space, can be used to fight climate disruption. Plus, the field of wildlife tracking is getting a major upgrade thanks to a new initiative called ICARUS. It uses special equipment on the International Space Station to allow researchers to track much smaller species than ever before, including tiny migrating birds and even insects. And prominent environmental groups are joining more than 1000 companies in pausing their advertising on Facebook in July as part of the "Stop Hate for Profit" campaign. We talk about why these groups are taking a stand against the spread of racism, white supremacy and climate disinformation on this giant social media platform.
