What happens to career strategy, leadership, and professional growth when the traditional rules of the corporate game are rewritten in real time?  In this episode of TRUST ME I KNOW WHAT I'M DOING, I sit down with executive search expert, leadership advisor, and host of the Corporate Confessions podcast, Deepali Vyas. Known widely as the "Elite Recruiter," Deepali has spent 25 years advising Fortune 500 companies, hedge funds, and high-growth AI organizations on executive hiring and leadership strategy.  Deepali pulls back the curtain on the "unwritten rules" of hierarchical organizations and explains why the traditional chronological resume is completely dead in today's attention-deficit economy. She introduces a modern framework for career positioning, detailing how professionals can build "The Signal"—a powerful one-page personal narrative—and why tying your outcomes directly to the dollar is essential for survival.  We also dive deep into the rising era of the "Company of One," the crucial differences between mentorship and true sponsorship, and how human skills like storytelling and judgment become your ultimate agency in the age of Agentic AI.  Deepali shares insights on:• The Death of the Traditional Resume: Why a chronological autobiography fails to get noticed, and how to capture an employer's attention in six seconds using "The Signal".  • The "So What" Filter: A simple, high-impact framework to flip your resume bullet points from passive tasks into quantifiable business value.  • Advisor vs. Mentor vs. Sponsor: Delineating these three fluid yet distinct roles, and why assuming your manager is your mentor by default is a common career trap.  • The "Company of One" Era: How new graduates and professionals can use portfolio careers and skill-stacking to build independent influence and security.  • Overcoming the Intelligence Paradox: Why highly accomplished individuals frequently fall into analysis paralysis, and how executive judgment thrives under ambiguity.  Whether you're a recent graduate navigating an unstable market, an executive looking to pivot, or someone trying to protect your human agency in an automated world, Deepali's masterclass in career literacy provides an invaluable blueprint.  If you enjoyed this deep dive, please hit that subscribe button, leave a comment, and share this video with someone looking to scale their own vision!   --------------------------Chapters-00:00 Introduction01:32 Deciphering Success in a Disrupted World04:05 The Unwritten Rules of Corporate Culture07:35 Post-Pandemic Workforce and Changing Rules09:23 Why the Traditional Resume Is Dead12:11 Tying Your Value to the Dollar: Modern Resume Metrics14:14 Falling into Recruiting: Cowardly Resignations & Indian Parents15:49 Navigating Wall Street & Standing Out at Goldman Sachs17:30 Sponsor Break: Travelopod19:18 Advisor vs. Mentor vs. Sponsor: Delineating the Roles23:47 Learning from Mentorship Mistakes and taking action28:49 Sponsor Break: Timberdog29:19 Overcoming the "Intelligence Paradox" & The "So What" Filter32:53 Identity, Seasons of Career, and Merit36:55 Portfolio Careers & The Era of the "Company of One"40:50 Cultivating Trust & Why AI Will Never Replace Human Connection42:44 Wrap-up & Shoutouts

If you've ever wondered what actually gets discussed behind closed doors when companies are hiring, promoting, or handing out pink slips, this episode is like a backstage pass. Amanda Goetz sits down with Deepali Vyas, a veteran executive recruiter and career coach who's spent 25 years in the boardrooms on Wall Street. She's also one of the most followed career experts on the internet.  She's advised Fortune 500 CEOs, hedge funds, and private equity firms on their most senior hires—and she's here to spill everything they never told you. The timing couldn't be better. Between mass layoffs, rapid AI expansion, and an unpredictable job market, navigating your career right now feels harder than ever. Deepali breaks down exactly what's changed, what still works, and what you need to stop doing right now—from the resume mistakes that get you filtered out in six seconds (!!!), to why loyalty to a company is not the flex you think it is, to the 5-5-3 networking rule that actually moves the needle when you're on the market. We're also getting into the closed-door conversations that decide who gets laid off, the one move that makes hiring managers want you more, and the corporate truth that might sting a little: your manager is not your mentor. If you've been playing checkers with your career, this is your invitation to start playing chess. Tune into the episode to find out how. Key Takeaways Talent alone won't get you promoted—visibility will.  Your manager is not your mentor.  Everyone has skills. What separates people is proximity. BLUF: Bottom line up front. Build your external brand while you're still employed.  Why you should leave your job when you're winning.  When you're job searching, use the 5-5-3 rule: five texts to people in your network, five days a week, and aim for three meetings. 00:00 Intro 03:12 Deepali's career origin story 05:41 Being underestimated as a superpower 06:13 Talent alone isn't enough: visibility & access matter most 08:14 Managing up & the power memo 13:58 Checkers vs. chess: playing the long game 15:57 Leave when you're winning 17:30 Behind closed doors: what hiring really looks like 20:06 Resumes, layoffs & career resilience 22:54 The 5-5-3 rule 26:46 Becoming indispensable vs. high impact 32:21 Rapid fire: resumes, LinkedIn & interview tips GUEST LINKS IG: https://www.instagram.com/the_elite_recruiter/ TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@elite.recruiter Subscribe to Deepali's newsletter: https://eliterecruiter-newsletter.beehiiv.com/ FOLLOW THE PODCAST IG: https://www.instagram.com/girlboss/ | TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@girlboss  Amanda Goetz: https://www.instagram.com/theamandagoetz/  https://girlboss.com/pages/ambition-2-0-podcast  SIGN UP  Subscribe to the Girlboss Daily newsletter: https://newsletter.girlboss.com/  For all other Girlboss links: https://linkin.bio/girlboss/ ABOUT AMBITION 2.0  Powered by Girlboss, Ambition 2.0 is a podcast where we'll be exploring what it really means to "have it all" in work, family, identity, and self… and if it's actually worth it. The Speedinvest team is one of the most active investors in Europe and last year announced 500m€ of fresh capital to invest in new ventures, and to continue to back their existing portfolio. The firm manages more than €1 billion in AuM and although it started in Austria, counts a team of over 40 investors based in Berlin, London, Munich, and Paris.Deepali joined Speedinvest as a Partner with a focus on finding, funding, and supporting investment in underrepresented founders but the majority of her time in venture capital has been as an angel investor, supporting startups from day 1.In this episode you'll learn:– About how Deepali's thesis in investing in female founders came through her own experiences of being underestimated in the workplace – How cleaning up the cap table is a myth: angels can continue to add value beyond capital and are a vital support for founders in a way that VCs cannot be, particularly in the early stages– Demystifying investment for operators could create a better angel ecosystem and is just as important as access to deal flow– Deepali's move from independent Angel to Partner at Speedinvest was not planned - she got to know the team and look at deals together before they developed a Venture Partner role for her, and she gradually became more and more involved with the firm before joining full time

They discussed her journey into the recruiting industry and how she founded Fearless+ to teach young people about emotional intelligence, communication skills, and self-awareness. They also talked about the profitability of recruiting and the low barrier to entry in the industry.  Deepali shared her experience in running global teams and working with Fortune 500 and Fortune Ten companies. She started in technology recruiting but landed on Wall Street for financial services recruiting due to her confidence and aggressiveness. She made her name in tech recruiting and specialized in quant AI recruiting specifically for financial services, as they were trying to keep up with Silicon Valley. Due to her expertise, she became a thought leader in the space and advised recruiters to own their domain and become experts in it.   The conversation continued with a discussion on Fearless+, a platform that teaches real-life skills to young people and helps them build a video portfolio to attract opportunities. Fearless aims to disrupt the recruiting industry by offering a more efficient and distinctive way to assess talent through a three-minute elevator pitch that showcases the candidate's holistic story. Fearless+ captures the skill sets and aptitude of potential candidates, and the team plans to optimize the platform to be the newest version of assessing talent. The conversation also touched on the emotional intelligence required to succeed in the recruiting industry and how Fearless+ aims to bridge the gap between traditional school education and the reality of the workforce.  The conversation discussed the importance of building personal brands and displaying real-life skills to attract potential employers, which is where Fearless comes in. Fearless is described as a platform that combines LinkedIn, TikTok, and Masterclass to teach young people real-life skills and help them build a portfolio that showcases their abilities. The platform allows individuals to create videos of themselves and display their skill sets to attract opportunities. The conversation also touched on the future of recruiting and how Fearless may disrupt the industry by providing a more holistic view of candidates through their three-minute elevator pitch and a more efficient way to assess talent.  The guest advised new recruiters to avoid getting lost in large organizations and instead join a boutique recruitment firm where they will have to struggle and work harder. She also recommended mid-level recruiters network with peers in their field and collaborate with them to scale their business. The guest recommended the book Super Bosses by Sidney Finkelstein as a transformative read for managers and leaders. She also discussed her favorite tech tools, including Slack, Notion, and Tome, an AI-powered presentation tool. How can I build the mindset of embracing and learning from failures and setbacks and build that resilience? It's never a story of how you became successful.
