How can the law be used to champion human rights, drive progress and fight for climate justice? Paul Dickinson is joined by Laura Clarke, CEO of ClientEarth, the non-profit lawyers for the planet working to protect life on Earth. Laura shares how ClientEarth has successfully challenged corporate greenwashing, from the Dutch courts ruling against airline KLM for misleading customers, to forcing a Polish company to change the misleading name of its ‘eco-pea coal'. And beyond corporate accountability, how they take on national governments to ensure they uphold their environmental commitments. In this latest in our series on the new levers of change, co-presenters Tom Rivett-Carnac and Christiana Figueres join Paul to reflect on the ways in which law, climate and justice intersects. Christiana shares her excitement on the new ways in which the ‘web of jurisprudence' is being woven in a field with little legal precedent. Plus, each share their take on the news that former Outrage + Optimism guest Mark Carney will become the next Prime Minister of Canada. How will he deal with President Trump amid the ongoing US-Canada trade war?Learn more

To those who don’t, he’s Paul Lambrino: a fantasist claiming heirship to a non-existent throne. This is the story of Paul’s fight to win a $1bn inheritance. It features private spy agencies, missing Caravaggios, and a billionaire with an eye for a deal. As the saying goes, ‘time waits for no man'. Time is always against us, and we just can't stop it. Maybe that's why some of us are always running late for appointments. But if timekeeping is not what you're good at, don't stress. There might be a good reason for your lack of punctuality. People's attitudes to being on time vary. Some clock-watch and make sure they're bang on time for a meeting. It is, after all, rude to be late, and if you can make it on time, why can't everyone else? But if, like me, you want to make every second count, you might try to squeeze as much as you can into the time you have available. However, when your schedule doesn't run to plan, your punctuality inevitably slips. People who lack promptness have been described as ‘time benders'. Author Grace Pacie told the BBC that “they're the people who don't want to be late, but they have a strange resistance to being early, and they don't allow enough time.” They assume their journey to an appointment will always go smoothly, and the train will always be on time! Perceptions of unpunctual people are almost always negative – even if sometimes wrong. Writing for the BBC, Laura Clarke says: “Being consistently late might not be your fault. It could be your type. The punctually-challenged often share personality characteristics, such as optimism, low levels of self-control, anxiety, or a penchant for thrill-seeking, experts say. It is also possible people are late so not to be conspicuous and to avoid the anxious wait for others to turn up. Maybe us latecomers should make more of an effort and follow the advice I heard to not ‘try' to be on time but ‘decide' to be on time. But I know if a meeting or a deadline really matters, then I'll be there. Otherwise relax, even if others are cursing you! 词汇表time waits for no man 时不我待running late 迟到timekeeping 守时be on time 准时clock-watch 不停地看表bang on time 非常准时,正好准时make every second count 争分夺秒schedule 日程安排表promptness 准时,及时time bender “弯曲时间的人”,总想在有限时间内做过多的事,从而导致经常迟到的人unpunctual 不准时的punctually-challenged 不守时的人penchant 倾向conspicuous 显眼的latecomer 迟到的人deadline 截止日期,最后期限

We all have one, don't we? A friend who's always late. The one who turns up for coffee a full half hour after the appointed time. The one who seems to be forever ‘stuck in traffic'. The dear pal who sends a message saying “Sorry, bit delayed”, when they're already 20 minutes behind schedule. I mean, what kind of a friend is that? Or just maybe, if you're really honest, this persistently tardy individual is actually you yourself? Either way, if you're on the receiving end, lateness can be extremely irritating, even infuriating. How on earth can people be so inconsiderate? Well, recent research suggests that there might be more to this than simple rudeness. Psychologists from Washington University believe people perceive time differently. Their study gave participants a specific amount of time in which to complete a task, and even provided them with a clock. Despite this, some people became so engrossed in the activity that they completely lost track of time and forgot to check the clock. According to psychologist Dr Susan Krauss Whitborne, from University of Masachussetts Amherst, this is like when we scroll through our social media feed and think only five minutes have elapsed, when in fact twenty have slipped by. Does that feel familiar? She writes in Psychology Today that those who were better at clock-checking were therefore “less reliant on their potentially flawed internal timekeeper.” So, what about the reasons beyond our faulty inner clocks? Well, our personality also plays a role. Laura Clarke writes for BBC Capital that the less punctual among us often share traits such as “optimism, low levels of self-control, anxiety, or a penchant for thrill-seeking”.Why optimism, you ask? Optimists tend to overestimate how much they can achieve and underestimate problems – which means they don't account for the long traffic jam on the way to meet you for that coffee. Here's another thought: maybe language is to blame? The English phrase ‘to be fashionably late' is used to describe the optimum time to arrive at an event. If you're too early, you can appear overly eager, but if you're a bit late you seem cool and sophisticated. The problem is, what one person regards as fashionably late, another may view as plain impolite. So, next time you have coffee, do try to be on time. 词汇表the appointed time 约好的时间stuck in traffic 堵在路上behind schedule 迟于约定的时间persistently 一次又一次地tardy 迟到的,行动缓慢的on the receiving end 等人的那一方infuriating 令人愤怒的inconsiderate 不为他人着想的,不体谅别人的perceive 看待engrossed 全身贯注的lose track of time 忘记时间feed (社交媒体上的)状态更新elapse (时间)流逝slip by 不知不觉地流逝timekeeper (个人)对时间的把握punctual 守时的a penchant for (拥有)…
