On this episode of the Fund the People Podcast (S7:E4), you'll get a bird's eye view of the threats to nonprofits, civil society, and social movements around the world. And you'll hear how one global funder has responded. Our guest today is Jamaica Maxwell, the Civil Society and Leadership Director at the David and Lucile Packard Foundation.  We discuss the challenges faced by civil society globally, including shrinking civic space and threats to individuals and organizations working on critical issues like climate change and reproductive rights.  She shares how the Packard Foundation's efforts to respond to these threats, and how the Foundation's work has evolved from using an ‘organizational effectiveness' frame to a more holistic approach to supporting civil society, which emphasizes the interconnectedness of leaders, organizations, networks, movements, infrastructure, and civic space. Today I had the chance to chat with Kevin Gushiken about his new book out of Kregel Press, “A Theology of Play: Learning to Enjoy Life as God intended.” It is such a unique topic of study and one that hasn't received that much focus. To think that God created play, gives us the freedom and permission to play, and that he actually delights in his people playing. How incredible! In our conversation, I asked Kevin every question about play that came up for me as I read his book. I hope they are questions that you have asked and wondered about too. Enjoy and as always, consider picking up this book. Whether you struggle to make time for play, or you struggle with shame in your play, this one is well worth the read. Kevin M. Gushiken (PhD, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School) serves as the PhD and Leadership Director at Lancaster Bible College, Capital Seminary & Graduate School. Prior to this, he served as a senior pastor in Chicago for seventeen years.

This is like cloud was 15 years ago, but we're still at the very opening acts of edge computing and what it's going to do to the world, the impact it's going to have.” - Bill Pfeifer “It's fascinating the different points of view that you come across and the different perspectives. I know what my perspectives on edge are and they're changing all the time but it's a single perspective and everybody else has radically different perspectives on this.” - Bill Pfeifer“One of my favorite definitions of the edge, and I agree there are lots of them, is where the digital world meets the physical world, and I think there's some truth to that.” - Matt Trifiro “My current fascination is artificial intelligence. And again, I'm coming at it from a perspective of sort of a naive user, right? It's like the tricorder. I see a future where every object in our lives, even the most mundane objects like coffee cups and sports coats might be connected to the internet or a network and might have either AI on board or be able to tap into AI that's delivered through a network.” - Matt Trifiro---------Show Timestamps:(02:00) Announcement from Matt(02:47) Introduction to Bill Pfeifer(04:01) The different perspectives on edge (13:43) Matt's reasons for starting the show (15:41) Edge topics that Bill is interested in (24:15) Matt's takeaways from the show up to this point (28:05) Some of Matt's favorite episodes (34:43) What is Matt interested in moving forward? (36:23) Edge questions that Matt still hasn't gotten answers to --------Sponsor:Over the Edge is brought to you by Dell Technologies to unlock the potential of your infrastructure with edge solutions. This episode of Over the Edge features an interview between Matt Trifiro and Mike Libecki (National Geographic Explorer, National Geographic Adventurer of the Year, Dell Ambassador, and Adidas Athlete) and Bill Pfeifer (Edge Messaging and Thought Leadership Director at Dell Technologies).Bill has worked in IT for over twenty years. Hel is an expert expert on the latest details of AI, 5G, IoT, and all the other emerging technologies. At Dell EMC, Bill works on research studies, talks to analysts, and helps shape how the company interacts with the market every day. Mike Libecki has an obsession with exploring and the world's most remote corners of the planet to climb world class first ascents, support science, conservation and humanitarian projects, and bring these powerful, emotional stories back with hopes to inspire us all to take care of our Mother Earth. Mike has completed more than 90 major expeditions, from Afghanistan to Antarctica, to Greenland and Guyana, and everywhere in between, taking him to over 100 countries. He is a producer, director, videographer, humanitarian (has his own 501c3 nonprofit), conservationist and leads science teams. He is also a math and tech nerd at heart, and uses the latest technologies (Virtual Reality, 3D, Artificial Intelligence etc.,) on his expeditions to succeed on and share the magic, power and beauty of our planet. In this episode, Mike and Bill describe the relationship between Dell Technologies and Mike's expeditions. Mike brings Dell technology to the most remote corners of the world; he uses the technology himself, and he gives it to the people he encounters. In an effort to give back, Dell and Mike work hand-in-hand to bring technology, education, and innovation to communities across the globe. Mike and Bill describe how they deploy edge technology in far-away regions. Bill discusses the future of the edge, while Mike explains how it ties into his humanitarian missions and nonprofit. ---------Key Quotes:Bill: “I could tell you a couple of like high tech wizbang cool things that we see coming with the edge, in terms of home automation and car automation and farm automation and things like that. But then when you're talking about natives who are farming for a living and hunting for a living and don't have any technology, what can they do with just a little bit that's specifically applied to help the trajectory of their village? Or, you know, get their kids into maybe mainstream life, maybe just doing their life better.”Mike: “One small point that I see when I'm out in the field that you know, this edge technology come in and understand how much water, what's going here, how's the fruit looking? I mean, there's, there's real issues out there that they don't know how to contend with, they just go with what Mother Earth gives them. And to think about edge technology and what Bill understands in his team that I don't, that can be efficient, that can make things metaphorically and literally fruitful, and for them to take that to the markets. I mean, there's so much going on here that it's a whole new excitement of this mystery for me to be connecting with this kind of technology that I don't understand. Because my goal is how do we make the lives better for these people in Bolivia, for the world, for the, you know, to be part of this global family.”Bill: “We have our view of the edge, and it's technological. Looking at data centers, looking at clouds. How do we help rebalance that technology so it's closer to people? So, it's providing new types of value? [Mike's] going farther out. And so, that's kind of pushing the definition of the edge. It's taking technology out of the data center and putting it close to where the people are.”Mike: “When I'm working with Bill and hearing about Edge, the stuff that I've learned that creates that new enthusiasm is that it takes some time, but the impossible takes longer. I feel like there's some impossible things that this edge technology is gonna unfold or unravel. I'm just fascinated.”---------Show Timestamps:(3:38) How Mike became an adventurer(4:35) Mike's partnership with Dell Technologies(7:23) How to define an expedition(10:29) Pushing the definition of Edge(11:28) Dell's field mission(14:08) What technology does in remote places(15:01) Mike's mission to give back(16:41) The start of Mike's nonprofit(18:45) Making expeditions sustainable(23:10) Painting a picture of an expedition(25:57) Investing in the future of Edge(28:47) Dell's definition of Edge(31:50) Making technology fruitful in the field(34:45) Mike's Joyineering Fund(38:40) The importance of giving back(40:07) Why does Dell prioritize this work?(45:47) Questions technology can help us with(47:21) What makes Dell unique(50:06) The future potential of Edge--------Sponsor:Over the Edge is brought to you by Dell Technologies to unlock the potential of your infrastructure with edge solutions. She also highlights one of my favourite points - that you don't need the 'title' or qualification in leadership or communication to BE a better leader as you are, or communicator in your own voice.Facebook: /leadershiphqIG: @leadershiphq & @mcdonald_incwww.leadershiphq.com.auwww.soniamcdonald.com.auwww.mcdonaldinc.com.au

This week's guest is Pam Costa and experienced and successful fundraiser in the San Pedro community, a Leadership Director at POLAHS and wife of current Honorary Mayor title holder, Domenic Costa. Today's episode is the ultimate female inspired episode in honor of women's history month. In the intro of this episode I take the time to acknowledge a few women that were on the cover of the San Pedro Today magazine in honor of Women's History Month. Though twenty women were highlighted in the feature article, I specifically wanted to shout out the women who have been guests on the podcast. This amazing group of women include Angela Romero (episode 1 & 15), Cindy Bradley (episode 8), Stacy Jackson (episode 19), Julie Bender (episode 4) and last but not least, Mandy Barton (episode 20). I am honored to have these women on the podcast and proud that of the work they are doing in the community. I also take a moment to speak about the progress women have made in society, but share an incident that happened to me personally in the the local San Pedro facebook group that exemplifies why we still have a long way to go. In the process I shout out a couple of amazing guys, Joshua Stecker, Editor of the San Pedro Magazine, for highlighting these amazing women in the community on the cover of the magazine , and Steve Casares, admin of the SP facebook group, who stepped in and supported me in my experience on the group page. In this episode I interview the only female candidate in this year's race for Honorary Mayor. Pam grew up in San Pedro, attending Mary Star elementary and high school. Her first experience fundraising in San Pedro was during her run for Mary Star Fiesta Queen when she was in high school. Since then she has continued to raise money for local events and charities within our community. Pam on raising money locally : "'It's hard. It's hard work. But people coming out of every corner just wanting to help has been overwhelming to me... its incredible." - Pam Costa This is the third Honorary Mayor campaign that she's been a part of and her first time as a candidate herself. For her husband's campaign two years ago she was instrumental in raising over $50,000, which was the most that had been raised until that point. She's hoping to beat her previous record. Pam on her fundraising passion: " I've always wanted to give back and embrace certain charities that have been important to me." -Pam Costa She talks about other women that have inspired her and the charities that motivated her in her decision to run for Honorary Mayor. She is speaks highly of the San Pedro community and hopes to see more activities and entertainment venues to come in the downtown area. We aspiringly speak about what it'd be like to have a major venue in San Pedro that could potentially attract huge talents. Pam Costa is raising money for Maria's Closet, Pedro Pet Pals and Port of Los Angeles High School.
