One in eight UK teenagers now suffers from an eating disorder, according to the latest figures from the UK's National Health Service. That's a shocking fifteen-fold increase since before Covid. These disorders are  notoriously sneaky; parents I've spoken to say they creep up on us and it can take a long time to realise what's going on. It's even worse if we focus in on seventeen to nineteen year olds where one in twenty boys  and one in five girls has an eating disorder. In this episode Rachel talks Umairah Malek, the Clinical Coordinator at the UK charity, Beat. Our conversation today with Cori Pence, Communications Specialist with Northwestern Community Services Board Prevention & Wellness Services is part of a year-long partnership with Northwestern Community Services Board highlighting eight different dimensions of wellness. Their "Rooted in" campaign is in its third year with 2023's message: Rooted in Wellness. Each month they will encourage and challenge community members to get involved by either participating in a monthly challenge or attending a Lunch and Learn session. The goals of the campaign are to deliver the following messages of wellness: • To raise awareness about how being mentally well impacts not only one part of who we are; • To encourage community members to become mentally well; • To foster connection and resilience in our communities by emphasizing wellness. Today's conversation included Deb Saunders, Clinical Coordinator of Faith Community Nurses at Winchester Medical Center. She explained what a faith community nurse is, the congregations they serve, and their goal of offering medical care and a listening ear. We talked about why spiritual wellness is important and discussed various ways to find it including yoga, sound therapy, music therapy, art, and, of course, prayer. NWCSB will be posting weekly videos on their website and social outlets offering options for viewers to try.  “Rooted in Wellness” is a collaborative project. Prevention and Wellness works closely with local coalitions to reach each community in their service area. These include Family Youth Initiative, Page Alliance for Community Action, Warren Coalition, and Northern Shenandoah Valley Substance Abuse Coalition. In addition, the campaign hopes to bring awareness to 2 statewide initiatives: Activate Your Wellness and Lock and Talk Virginia. Each month there will be a call to action with tips, activities, and education to build up a specific dimension of wellness. There are various ways to engage in the campaign including through social media. Stay up-to-date by following @NWCSBWellness on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram for infographics, photos, resources, and quotes. As this campaign is yearlong, be sure to visit nwcsbwellness.com regularly for updates and schedule of monthly activities. Share posts and include the hashtag #NWRootedinWellness. Get involved. Be creative. Take photos that reflect what wellness means to you and tag @NWCSBWellness on social media with the hashtag #NWPhotoVoiceChallenge. She and Marc engage in a feverish, high-octane discussion on 'stigma' and God's role in helping a person like Angel to fight it. "As much as I wanted to stop, my body was on auto-pilot."   Angel's story is jaw-dropping. Raised by parents who were addicts, it took years for her to arrive at a place in her life where she could finally start to recover from, in her words, "the things the world told me that I am." She also talks at length about discovering a place where she felt at home and where "she wasn't a leper, where I belonged somewhere." Marc and Angel also talk about her role as a peer-recovery supporter and how her faith-based approach within her role at Arc has become her life's mission: to assist others in fighting stigma and finding that same feeling of inclusion and acceptance. Get early access to our latest psychology lectures: http://bit.ly/new-talks5 For patients with trans-generational trauma histories that include oppression, war, slavery, genocide, and immigration to a new culture, it is important to develop treatment plans to address trans-generational wounding and adaptations. How does the clinician know when to focus on trans-generational trauma? This presentation will help clinicians locate transmissions by: 1) attending to the affective quality ad content of the patient's narrative; 2) understanding symptoms of trans-generational trauma; 3) learning how to do generational genograms: and 4) investigating the presence and nature of their tribal narratives. Once the clinician suspects that symptoms are related to trans-generational trauma, a series of interventions are presented to expand history taking, locate generational themes and resources, and process along the lines of the generational trauma/themes. The processing leads to a coherent, regulated generational/tribal narrative from which the patient can move forward and interrupt the transmission of trauma to the next generation. -- Dr. Karen Alter-Reid is a clinical psychologist who specializes in working with adults struggling with post-traumatic stress injuries. She trains mental health clinicians in EMDR Therapy, a modality of treatment for PTSD. It's that time of year again. Time to gather with loved ones to eat and drink too much! Well, we don't have to do that. We could focus on the conversations and laughter with friends and family, but food and drink do become a big part of our gatherings. This week I'm joined by dietitian and Clinical Coordinator for Dietetic Internships at Marywood, Micki Orlowsky...a woman who dishes out a heap of positivity and healthy servings of humor! She shares her approach to eating this time of year when we often have many opportunities to indulge. Join me next week for a special edition of Uncorked with Funny Wine Girl on Wednesday, November 24, when my focus will be gratitude. I will be sharing some of the things I've written in various gratitude journals over time and I encourage you to share what you are grateful for. You can submit an audio message through Anchor or send me a message on Facebook at Funny Wine Girl Jeannine. RARE MAMAS RISING - EPISODE 3 Happy, But Different with Boston Children's Epilepsy Center Coordinator & Rare Mom Colleen Gagnon Colleen Gagnon is the Clinical Coordinator of the Epilepsy Center at Boston Children's Hospital, a nurse, and a rare disease mom herself. Her daughter Niamh was diagnosed with a rare genetic mutation of the brain called Subcortical Band Heterotopia. That diagnosis came with a myriad of other diagnoses, including epilepsy, cerebral palsy, and autism. In this episode, Colleen shares valuable insights from her perspective as both a medical professional and a mother. From the importance of allowing yourself to grieve your child's diagnosis to how parents can effectively collaborate with their child's care team and how life with a rare disease is often different but can be happy—Colleen shares it all! EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS How did you enter the world of rare disease? My daughter was born prematurely at 34 weeks, was healthy but small. From the beginning, I had an instinct that something was different. She woke up fussy and crying and then began having seizures. The MRI results were shared with us at the hospital, and we found that Niamh had a brain malfunction called Subcortical Band Heterotopia. What advice do you have for parents to effectively collaborate with their care team? Find a good nurse because they can coordinate things and get things done for you. I always appreciate parents who are asking questions and want to know more as long as it's not adversarial, too intense, or confrontational when approaching the care team. Be an advocate, be honest, be open, and be transparent. Have a realistic sense that you don't have 24-hour access to your healthcare team, and they're doing their best to tend to everyone. I think many nurses and physicians go into this field because they do have a deep sense of wanting to help people and make a difference. So you're working with people who came into this field for that reason, so really, we're more allies.  What have you learned through parenting Niamh that has helped you professionally? When your child has a chronic illness, challenging behaviors, and a significant intellectual disability, it's hard to talk about, and sometimes there's a stigma. I see parents struggle with it. I want to tell them that I know how you feel, it's okay, you're not alone. I can give those parents the advice that they need to be part of a group and community. They need that support. Because of my experiences, I have an extra sense of knowing what parents need and what I can offer. What advice do you have for parents who have a new diagnosis? Be patient, especially through therapies. Look at things over time instead of day-by-day to see improvements because they're not going to be instant. Don't give up on something too soon. Don't let your child's rare disease overtake your life. Find joy in your family, in your other children, and with your partner. Move on and find your place beyond the disease. You'll have great moments in life; it's not all sad. With patience and time, you'll find joy. You can lead a very happy life. It might look different, but it can still be happy.
