The Catechism unpacks—by way of comparison—the “two participations in the one priesthood of Christ”: the common priesthood of all the faithful and the ministerial (or hierarchical) priesthood of the bishops and priests. Fr. Mike hones in on the ministerial priesthood as a means for Jesus to minister to his Church. His ministers act on his behalf in persona Christi Capitis: in the person of Christ, the Head. The esteemed Dr. Leonard Sax joins us this week to share his expertise on how sex differences impact child-rearing, parenting, and education. We begin with a discussion of biological differences between male and female brains, particularly when it comes to sense perception, which can lead to misunderstandings between the sexes. Dr. Sax highlights the importance of understanding these differences in order to optimize children's learning and home environments. The conversation then shifts to the topic of gender atypicality and how parents and educators might embrace the richness and complexity of the human experience, allowing children to explore their interests and preferences without being labeled transgender. We discuss the challenges faced by boys in today's society, including the growing gender gap in academic achievements, and how teachers can cater to the unique developmental needs of both sexes in co-ed schools.Dr. Sax provides practical advice for parents and educators on how to navigate sex differences and create a culture of respect and understanding. He emphasizes the importance of recognizing and celebrating the diversity of gender expression, while also respecting biological differences.Leonard Sax MD PhD is a board-certified family physician and PhD psychologist with more than 30 years of clinical experience. Over the past 22 years, he has visited more than 500 schools across the United States and worldwide, speaking to parents about many topics including social media, video games, and gender issues. He also leads workshops for teachers on gender-aware instructional strategies, on building a culture of respect, and on dealing with difficult parents. Click on the timestamp to fast-forward to that point in the video. 2:20  "If you haven't played video games in the last 10 years, they have become more addictive." The people who create games, and other media, are strategically using their knowledge of human psychology and neurology in their favor. In schools, competition is being removed and socially discouraged and as a result, many boys are turning to video games.  7:17  Just from your experience, being married, raising boys, and working with boys, what have you perceived, on your own, what boys want and need? Tony Robbins teaches that every human being has 6 basic needs. Boys and men turn to video games to try and fulfill one of their basic needs! As moms, we must be reminded that boys have different desires and motivations than we would. Allow boys to be boys without giving them a pass to be barbarians.  12:34  Boys are turning to video games for a reason, as mothers you need to remember that they are doing it to fulfill a drive or desire that we may not understand, having never been a boy. Boys will get together and prefer to be alone, or with other boys, playing video games more than they prefer to engage with girls.  19:55  What is it that keeps evil at bay? If your needs are being met you are not going to seek out the other vehicle that is unhealthy or immoral, because your needs are being met! The sheep hate the sheepdogs as much as they hate the wolves.  24:50  Certain men have this "will to power" those types of boys/men are more likely to be addicted to video games than they are to engage in a useful career. When you play video games you get a dopamine hit where you feel like you achieved so much, but the reality is all you did was sit on your butt! The REAL pricetag of achieving greatness in the real world is so much more effort than it is in the virtual world.  32:10  Violent video games affect Attention deficit disorder, foolish risk-taking, obesity, changes in personality, and dehumanizing. The connection that video games have with pornography. Non-violent video games. "All we can think about is Minecraft, we don't even want to go outside and play anymore." Not every boy gets addicted to video games but for the ones that do, it is so important to watch out.   42:40  We want our boys to put in the effort to become REAL men! We NEED to put in more effort to create that environment to allow them to develop those skills! Make your boys' life's more fulfilling, adventurous, stimulating, and competitive than video games! Examples: martial arts, sports, trips, adventures, races, camping, fishing and so much more! 46:40  It can be challenging to get your children to want to do those things when they have the option of video games. The kids that can and will spend all day on video games are the ones you need to worry about and invest in the MOST! You need to control the headgates until your children can learn to manage it for themselves! When you take away the video game you need to FILL that void for your children that they are trying to fill with the video games.  55:24  Support the working energy wherever your boys are excited, as long as it's good to work! As they get older you will need to get new strategies! You NEED to invest in your family in BIG ways! Start today to implement the small things and plan today for the big things!  --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/extraordinary-family-life/message

On today's episode, Jamie and Guy discuss the growing gender gap between boys and girls in education (and motivation in school) and how this has been widening over the last 40 years.  From changes in schools that cause disengagement from boys, to video games, to fewer boys getting college degrees, Dr. Sax discusses the causes and what we can do as parents to help our boys succeed. Boys Adrift: The Five Factors Driving the Growing Epidemic of Unmotivated Boys and Underachieving Young Men by Leonard Sax Something scary is happening to boys today. From kindergarten to college, they are less resilient and less ambitious than they were a mere twenty years ago. As for young men, it turns out the film Failure to Launch is not far from the truth. Fully one-third of men ages 22-34 are still living at home with their parents-about a 100 percent increase in the past twenty years. Boys nationwide are increasingly dropping out of school; fewer are going to college; and for the first time in American history, women are outnumbering men at undergraduate institutions three to two. Parents, teachers, and mental health professionals are worried about boys. But until now, no one has come up with good reasons for their decline-and, more important, with workable solutions to reverse this troubling trend. Now, family physician and research psychologist Dr. Leonard Sax delves into the scientific literature and draws on his vast clinical experience to propose an entirely original view of why boys and young men are failing in school and at home. He argues that a combination of social, cultural, and biological factors is creating an environment that is literally toxic to boys, ranging from environmental estrogens to the over-prescription of ADHD drugs. And he presents practical solutions-from new ways of controlling boys' use of video games, to innovative (and workable) education reforms.

BOYS ADRIFT: WHY ADHD IS DEFINITELY OVERDIAGNOSED is a powerful episode with Dr. Leonard Sax, author of 'Boys Adrift', 'Girls on the Edge', 'Why Gender matters' and 'The Collapse of parenting'. We talked about the reasons for the overdiagnosis of children with ADHD and about the type of medications that have harmful longterm effects on children's motivation center in the brain (nucleus accumbens). Most experts are not aware of the studies that clearly show that children medicated with methamphetamines (Adderall, Dexedrine, Focalin) show a higher lack of motivation in the long term than children medicated with methylphenidates such as Concerta, Focalin or Quillivant. Oh, and we also talked about the financial ties that many ADHD experts have to pharmaceutical companies, especially institutions such as Harvard Medical School... I think you'll like this episode very much so! Dr. Sax earned his bachelor's degree in biology from MIT, where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa in five semesters at the age of 19. He then went on to the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned both his PhD in psychology, and his MD. Next he did a 3-year residency in family practice at Lancaster General Hospital in Lancaster Pennsylvania. In 1990, he established a family practice in Montgomery County Maryland, just outside Washington DC. He provided care for children and adults in Montgomery County for more than 18 years. He took a 5-year sabbatical, 2008 to 2013, to devote himself full-time to visiting schools and communities, and to writing. He returned to clinical practice in 2013 near his home in Chester County, Pennsylvania, while continuing to lead workshops and give keynotes based on his visits to more than 460 communities over the past 20 years.   Dr. Sax has led workshops and given keynotes not only all across North America – from California to Nova Scotia and from Alaska to Florida – but also in Australia, Bermuda, England, Germany, Italy, Mexico, New Zealand, Scotland, Spain, and Switzerland. At the camp, the kids learn basic life skills from as simple as boiling an egg to financial literacy. It was such a deep dive of a conversation - from the role of dopamine in gaming creation to the role of parents in either enabling or disabling excess gaming use. In this episode of the Abiding Together Podcast, we had the pleasure of interviewing Fr. Mike Schmitz! Fr. Mike is a wonderful speaker and evangelist, but more than that, he is a beautiful witness of what it looks like to be a spiritual father. We discuss spiritual fatherhood in the priesthood and some of the stumbling blocks in our relationship with God the Father. We also discuss what restored masculinity and the family looks like. One Thing We Love this Week Sister Miriam’s one thing - The book The Life Model: Living from the Heart Jesus Gave You Michelle’s one thing - Summer hospitality and potlucks! What is your experience of fatherhood in your life? How has this impacted your relationship with God the Father positively or negatively? What does a rebirth or renaissance of the family look like in our world today? Journal Questions Sit with the words, as if said from God the Father, “I am proud of you”. What stirs in your heart? Who in your life has revealed the heart of God the Father to you? In what areas do you need to experience restoration in your relationship with your earthly father and with God the Father? Quote to Ponder “I know I can trust God the Father as my dad” - Fr. Mike Schmitz Scripture for Lectio Divina - 1 John 3:1 “See what love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God; and that is what we are.”

For this week’s episode and the lastest installment of the Self Care Series, I sat down with Dr. Leonard Sax to discuss his book Why Gender Matters: What Parents and Teachers need to know about the science of Sex Differences. We started the Self Care series in honor of the late Mac Miller to address issues related to physical, mental, and social well-being. Understanding the differences between boys and girls, men and women, is paramount to self-care and your relationships with others. A little bit of background info on Dr. Sax: He graduated MIT at the age of 19, earned his Ph.D. and MD in psychology from University of Pennsylvania, and for 19 years he was a practicing family physician in Maryland. Dr. Sax has spoken on the issues of child and adolescent development throughout the US, Bermuda, Canada, England, and numerous other countries, and he has visited over 400 schools since 2001. Now, what makes understanding gender differences so important? We live in a society where, according to Dr. Sax, “the lack of awareness of gender differences has had the unintended result of reinforcing gender stereotypes.” For example, did you know that for the average boy to hear you as well as the average girl, you have to speak about 8 decibels higher, which is equivalent to 3 clicks on the car radio? Or that on average, girls’ visual systems are better at picking up color, detail, and texture than boys? And boys are better at picking up on speed and direction? There are concrete differences between boys and girls, and there are millions of ways to be male and female. Gender differences do not equate to gender inequalities. We should be celebrating these differences and better understanding them, rather than pretending like they don’t exist. Even if you have no interest in gender differences, I encourage you to listen to this conversation to broaden your perspective because these issues affect everyone, including me and you. And yes, people may disagree with some things said in this episode, and I want that. I encourage you to reach out to me and Dr. Sax with any thoughts you have on this episode. Both of our emails will be in the description of this podcast, along with a link to Dr. Sax’s book Why Gender Matters. No matter how difficult, politically incorrect, or polarizing a certain topic may be, the goal should always be to have a conversation grounded in facts. Phi Beta Kappa graduate from MIT (at age 19), New York Times Best Selling author, international news contributor and sought after expert on family medicine and relationship dynamics aside, the primary reason I wanted to speak with Dr Sax was for his book, Boys Adrift; The Five Factors Driving the Growing Epidemic of Unmotivated Boys and Underachieving Young Men. As a father to a son and someone who's deeply passionate about how men can restore and evolve masculinity, I wanted to better understand why so many boys and men seemed so lost and uninspired. What are the reasons for the dramatic drop in performance in boys and men in the last few decades? This conversation was eye-opening if not alarming. I walked away with ideas on what specific masculine activities I should engage my son with, how to be a better father and role model for him and even making changes to what we consume (this one was the most disturbing thing of the entire conversation). Continuing on the theme from last week (because I believe this is such a critical topic right now), today we talk about the fact that young boys seem to be going astray. The school system is stacked against them, society seems to be dismissing masculinity altogether, and being a man is something that actually has to be defended. My guest, Dr. Leonard Sax, joins me to talk about 5 factors driving an epidemic of unmotivated boys and underachieving young men, how the school system needs to be overhauled if we are to re-engage our boys, the dangers of endocrine disruptors in men's lives, and how boys are going adrift and, more importantly, how to get them back on track. SHOW HIGHLIGHTS 5 factors driving unmotivated boys and underachieving young men How the school system is stacked against young men Why boys are struggling with academic achievement How the school system needs to be changed The dangers on endocrine disruptors The effect pornography has on young boys The value of consequences for young men How to help our boys find passion and purpose How to re-engage our boys DR. LEONARD SAX I was introduced to Dr. Leonard Sax's work through my wife as she picked up a couple books on her pursuit to more effectively raise our boys. She came across two books in particular: Boys Adrift and Why Gender Matters. After she got done reading them, she asked if I would. From the opening remarks, I knew this guy had some of the answers to the challenges we seem to be facing in raising young men. Dr. Sax is an MIT graduate, a physician, and a psychologist and has been practicing for nearly 30 years. The Collapse of Parenting: How We Hurt Our Kids When We Treat Them Like Grown-Ups Topic Introduction Doc Smo here. I have an exciting new pedcast for you today, a book review pedcast, that I hope will get you revved up to read and digest a new parenting book by Dr. Leonard Sax, a family doctor and clinical psychology. The book is called The Collapse of Parenting, and I must say that I think you will find it quite thought provoking. This is first of Dr. Sax's book I have read and after reading it, I am excited to get his other books, Boys Adrift and Girls on the Edge. More on these in future pedcasts. Musical Introduction Doc Smo's Book Review Here is a quick list of some of the problems Dr. Sax sees with current parenting practices in the U.S., as outlined in The Collapse of Parenting: Parents are failing to teach a culture of respect to children. Parents are treating their children like adults rather than children; consequently parents are having difficulty setting effective limits for their children. Today's American children are more fragile physically and psychologically than children have been in the past. Attention and mood problems in children have become very common among U.S. children, as has the use of psychoactive medications Far more children have low motivation and drive than in previous generations. On world standards, American children are falling behind in intelligence, creativity, and performance. The Collapse of Parenting presents a scathing view of American child rearing.  Dr. Sax gives each of these topics a fairly lengthy discussion, reinforcing his conclusions with references, studies, and statistics. He has done his homework and I think he makes convincing arguments that many children in the U.S. are different today than in children in past generations with regards to the issues he discusses in this book.  Dr. Sax has produced a well-written, well annotated, and well-edited book in The Collapse of Parenting. His style of writing is interesting and I think his readers will enjoy the many anecdotes that he tells. He effectively uses his combined experience of being both a family doctor and psychologist, to give the book a unique dual perspective: strong on psychological insight but not ignoring the changing physical nature of childhood. Readers will feel his passion and dedication to his subject.   As a rule, I give my highest ratings and recommendations to parenting books that spot important trends in parenting or give parents practical information and skills that can be transformative for their family life. I feel that The Collapse of Parenting is one of these books.  Dr. Sax effectively presents a rebuttal to some of the more popular recent parenting fads  "Attachment Parenting" and "Let's Boost a Child's Self Esteem with Praise" movements without ever mentioning their names. At the same time, Dr. Sax validates the predictions psychologist, Dr. David Elkind, foresaw problems coming, in his 1989 book, The Hurried Child.  If you ask me, The Hurried Child and The Collapse of Parenting, should be on every parent's reading list.  They both contain wisdom and insights that every parent will benefit from. Dr. Sax is pretty rough on contemporary American parents and to be fair to today's parents, society, parenting, family life, technology, and the pace of life, has dramatically changed in the past two generations. To some degree, it may not be fair to judge the performance of today's parents on benchmarks of the past since today's families are being presented with a very different world than the one that existed fifty years ago.  That being said, I think Dr. Sax has presented a compelling argument that some changes are needed in the way parents treat their children in America today.

During the past 10 years or so, there's been an uptick in the number of books and newspaper articles about how young men today our floundering. Fewer young men are going to college than in years past, and those that do go, fewer of them are graduating. What's more there's a general sense that young men today are simply unmotivated to seek out gainful employment or starting families. Meanwhile, girls and young women are surpassing boys and young men in education and in work. My guest today on the podcast has spent his career studying how the biological differences between boys and girls and the changes in our culture and society during the past few decades can explain these discrpencies in achievement. His name is Dr. Leonard Sax and he's the author of several books including Boy's Adrift and Girls on the Edge. Today on the podcast, Dr. Sax and I discuss how gender effects the emotional and intellectual development of boys and girls and what parents and schools can do to help them thrive based on their unique attributes. If you're a parent, you won't want to miss this episode.

Summer is here! And with this glorious time of year can also come the pressure to plan the most perfect summer ever. We are here to tell you that perfect is not the goal. Being intentional about the type of summer that is right for your individual family is so much more important than trying to make what you perceive “everyone else is doing” fit into your life. In this episode Becky P. walks us through some very specific questions to answer as you decide what you want this summer to look like. Whether you decide on a lot of structure, being easy and carefree, or something in between, you will be able to make the decision with the confidence that you are choosing the vibe you and your family need this summer. SPONSOR: Visit [classroom.beckyhiggins.com](https://classroom.beckyhiggins.com/) to learn more about our available online courses. SHOW NOTES: JOURNALING EXERCISE // 5 questions to ask: 1 - What has changed in your family and in your life since last summer? 2 - What is your most scarce resource? 3 - What do you think your family needs right now? 4 - How do I want the summer to feel in my home? 5 - What are our biggest rocks? What are our highest priorities? Using your answers to the questions above as your guide, think through the following categories as you cultivate the mindset you want for this summer: STRUCTURE // Screen Time: How much time do I want my kids on screens? What are the parameters for when that is okay? What does screen time include (phones, tablets, TV, video games, etc.) // Summer Jobs // Chores // Standing Activities – pool, movies, park, etc. VACATIONS // Do you want to take a vacation? Do you want to include your kids in that conversation or have the parents decide? ACTIVITIES // Not everything has to be meaningful.
