Imagine leaving the high-speed world of Wall Street for the heart-to-heart connections of community service. That's exactly what Christine Fitzgerald, my esteemed guest and co-founder of the Smithtown Children's Foundation, did. Join us as we navigate her extraordinary journey from finance to philanthropy, discussing the foundation's inception and how it became a beacon of hope for families in the throes of crisis. We delve into the realities of local charity, the judgments faced, and how the foundation has debunked the myth that affluent communities don't struggle. Christine's story is a testament to the power of compassion and the profound difference a community can make when it rallies together. This episode isn't just about charitable giving; it's a celebration of community synergy and the unsung heroes among us. We unpack how strategic partnerships and events, like Subaru's heartwarming coat donation and the Smithtown Chamber of Commerce's buzzing local activities, have galvanized support and brought warmth (quite literally!) to those in need. The tales of the Avalon apartment fires and how swiftly our community mobilized to provide help showcase the incredible strength of unity in times of adversity. Christine and I reflect on how every individual's effort, no matter how small, contributes to a tapestry of support that holds the power to uplift entire neighborhoods. For those wondering how to lend a hand, Christine offers a treasure trove of insights. From polar plunges to fundraising events, there's an array of ways to engage with the Smithtown Children's Foundation. Whether you're a local business owner looking to make a difference or an individual eager to volunteer, this episode guides you through the myriad of opportunities to contribute. As we wrap up, we're reminded that the spirit of giving isn't just about opening wallets—it's about opening hearts. So if you're ready to be part of a community that takes action and cares deeply, this is one conversation you won't want to miss.Learn more about Smithtown Children's Foundation:  https://www.smithtownchildrensfoundation.com/Support the showNetwork with other entrepreneurs and get access to monthly free live trainings: https://bit.ly/38w3VNiDownload our free Podcast Gear Guide: http://www.LaunchMyPodcastShow.comFollow us: https://www.facebook.com/dontfeargrithttps://www.instagram.com/dontfeargrit/

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Local charity evaluation: Lessons from the "Maximum Impact" Program in Israel, published by Yonatan Schoen on August 27, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. TL;DR Maximum Impact program, led by Effective Altruism Israel, aims to significantly increase the impact of Israeli philanthropy by conducting nonprofit evaluations, identifying high-impact local nonprofits (even if their recipients are abroad), and promoting effective giving. Additionally, we aim to strengthen the community internally by developing a replicable model that could achieve these goals in other local communities and by building the Israeli EA community through action-oriented projects. During the last year, we joined forces with promising non-profits and conducted and published 21 cost-effectiveness analyses. Together with an acclaimed team of expert judges, we identified 3 nonprofits as relatively cost-effective, with Smoke-Free Israel, a tobacco taxation nonprofit, which might be competitive with top charities. We learnt a lot from the pilot and have many ways to improve the program, but overall the pilot was successful: we identified high-impact local nonprofits and have engaged Israeli philanthropies interested in cost-effectiveness and in the results of the program. Finally, having a large-scale program on nonprofit effectiveness was a huge boost for EA Israel's community building, and many people heard about EA and became more involved because of the program. We're looking forward to continuing to maximize the impact of Israelis and to share the knowledge and experience we gained with the EA community. Motivation We identified that global effective giving platforms currently don't "meet donors where they are" and only offer recommendations on global nonprofits without being able to engage donors; Donors who are initially interested in local donations but can later be introduced and nudged to give to global high-impact nonprofits. Israeli and Jewish donors abroad (~17.2bn per annum) currently donate almost entirely without evidence and cost-effectiveness estimations, as the Israeli non-profit ecosystem doesn't yet emphasize these as prerequisites for donations. With almost no research currently available on local effectiveness and a strong bias of donors towards donating locally, there are not enough impact-based donations in the local nonprofit sector. Based on discussions with EAs worldwide, we assume this problem is not unique to Israel and would like to find a cost-effective way to solve it. What have we done so far? Our research program In our 10-month program, we chose 25 promising nonprofits from more than 160 applications from Israeli-based NGOs, 21 of which successfully published their first-ever cost-effectiveness reports. In the pilot program, we provided guidance and assistance to support non-profits to execute a cost-effectiveness analysis. After the research period, we sent the reports to a team of expert judges for review, and chose the most promising non-profits based on the expert review. We offered monetary incentives to encourage nonprofits to participate: 15 nonprofits received preliminary research grants of $6k, the 3 top outstanding nonprofits received $24k prizes, and $26k was allocated to a donation matching campaign to all nonprofits who publish a report. A private donor and an Infrastructure Fund grant funded the pilot. Guiding nonprofits on evaluation and improvement We implemented various tools and resources to help incentivize and enable non-profits to conduct robust effectiveness analyses, including: An extensive set of templates and how-tos. Research grants for 10 young academic researchers (MA and PHDs) from Israel's top universities to conduct research with the organizations and join the EA community during the process. Visit NABUR.montrosepress.com to learn more. Now, our feature story. As a local charity takes steps to set up near downtown, the City of Montrose is looking to resume a homelessness task force. The Shepherd's Hand Center is in the process of setting up a food distribution and services site. After months of back and forth with the city, the charity's founder Garey Martinez was able to meet with City Manager Bill Bell and others to hash out some issues around what zoning applies to the building. Martinez said once Bell was told Shepherd's Hand is not planning an overnight shelter there, everything lightened up. Bell agreed to convene the task force to help address the types of issues Shepherd's Hand deals with while serving homeless, hungry and low-income individuals. Martinez said the planned center was not intending to replicate emergency overnight, seasonal shelter - which is currently provided by Montrose Lighthouse Ministries. He also noted that he's very excited to be able to say that he's cooperating and working with the City of Montrose. And because of the ongoing pandemic, Montrose's needs are growing even more. The idea is to use the South Second Street location to continue the food box distribution Martinez currently does out of Cedar Creek Church. They'll offer wraparound services by providing office space for similar nonprofits; a community room for those who want to use it, and a location to serve hot meals through the food trailer. Martinez and others have been busily renovating the South Second Street building. They anticipate being able to open in mid-March, but they'll likely move the food trailer before then.  The goal is for it to be a community center, not just for the homeless and low-income, but open for everybody. Martinez and many others have worked for years to address homelessness and related issues. He is part of the Lighthouse Ministry as well, and also is on the board of the Food Bank of the Rockies. The Lighthouse is able to provide that overnight housing by subleasing from Tuxedo Corn the Brown Center. The city-owned building is leased to the growers who make up Tuxedo Corn for summer use as farmworker housing. In the winter, under the sublease, the Lighthouse uses it as an overnight shelter. Martinez also collaborates with more than 20 other organizations that grapple with the needs poverty creates in Montrose. To stay up to date on this story, visit us at montrosepress.com. And before we go,  we'd like to take a moment to remember the life of Rick Dwain Hurt, of Montrose. Rick was born in 1953 in Texas. He graduated from High School in 1971, and then attended the University of Texas in Austin, earning a degree in anthropology. While there, Rick discovered the Austin music scene which inspired his life-long love of Americana music. He got a master's degree in archaeology from Texas Tech University and worked as an archaeologist throughout the United States.  He then decided to change careers and become a teacher. After getting his education degree from Metro State College in Denver, Rick started teaching history and geography at Olathe High School. Rick retired from teaching in 2009, after 20 years in the classroom. Over the next few years, Rick worked promoting concerts in Montrose. And in recent years, Rick volunteered with KVNF Public Radio to help open a Montrose-based satellite broadcast studio, Studio M. Rick loved to travel and spent time in Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Costa Rica, Honduras, Guatemala, and Belize. He was a huge Denver Broncos fan, loved playing guitar with friends, telling stories, and going on diving adventures. Rick was also a fisherman, traveling to Alaska each summer with his uncle and cousins to fish for salmon and halibut. He will be greatly missed. Thank you for taking a moment with us today to remember and celebrate his life. That's all for today, thank you for listening! Here is some more detail about their fundraising and where you can support them: "We have showing on our page £2,080 but actually it's really only £1,080 as the Council put in their first £1,000 match funding so we really need a miracle, a mad rush of people bidding or a philanthropic benefactor to cover the remaining £3,920 before next Monday 21st September! We need to raise £5K via a Crowdfunding campaign before Monday 21st September and I know that Northern Irish people have a real heart for supporting and giving back to the community. So with this in mind I wanted to ask for your personal support in helping us to develop a brand new programme to work alongside our schools based Uberheroes® programme, this new programme will focus specifically on supporting children going through transitioning from P6 & P7 into Y8 we plan to trial this for two years enabling us to deliver a programme based on the actual needs of local children across the province. We were one of 4 Charities chosen by Crowdfunder UK & Belfast City Council to raise £5,000 which will be match funded by Belfast City Council if we can raise the initial £5,000 ourselves; this is where we are in real need of the support from local people as a one off donation or by choosing one of our corporate rewards before Monday 21st. In response to the unprecedented demand for food from charities and community groups across the country, Ireland’s first ever national food appeal will take place in over 400 supermarkets nationwide this week from September 17th – 20th 2020. Research carried out among 121 of FoodCloud’s charity partners identified a 70% increase in demand for food as a result of Covid-19. The research found that there are three groups within society most affected by the gap in supply of food; those over 65 years of age (49%), single parents (36%) and people with mental health concerns (30%). Obair is based in Newmarket on Fergus, Co. Clare. They provide a meals on wheels service for the elderly and a support service for lone parents in rural areas. Before Covid-19 they were serving on average 60 hot meals or dinners a day. This increased to over 300 dinners a day during the height of the pandemic. Today they are serving over 200 dinners per day. They fear demand will increase again as the number of Covid cases continues to rise. On Tuesday's Morning Focus, Gavin Grace spoke to Siobhán O'Driscoll from Obair.

Andrea is the founder of The Castinetti Real Estate Group and The Kindness Coalition, a non-profit focused on helping the local community. The two are tied together well, Andrea's CRG donates a portion of every single sale to local charities and her non-profit is solely dedicated to helping out in her local community. She started out helping the homeless and local children in need and has recently become a literal lifesaver amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Since this all started, her coalition has sourced, purchased and delivered thousands of masks and other PPE to Doctors, Nurses, and other healthcare workers here in Massachusetts. In addition, she has been able to match up restaurants with extra capacity with hungry healthcare workers and has managed to deliver fresh meals to hundreds of our doctors and nurses while also helping to keep local restaurants alive in the process. It was a fun, inspiring conversation with someone I can honestly say makes the world a better place. If you are looking for a way to help or contribute during this difficult time, The Kindness Coalition is a sure way to know your donation or time volunteered has a dramatic and immediate impact. This week's guest is Pam Costa and experienced and successful fundraiser in the San Pedro community, a Leadership Director at POLAHS and wife of current Honorary Mayor title holder, Domenic Costa. Today's episode is the ultimate female inspired episode in honor of women's history month. In the intro of this episode I take the time to acknowledge a few women that were on the cover of the San Pedro Today magazine in honor of Women's History Month. Though twenty women were highlighted in the feature article, I specifically wanted to shout out the women who have been guests on the podcast. This amazing group of women include Angela Romero (episode 1 & 15), Cindy Bradley (episode 8), Stacy Jackson (episode 19), Julie Bender (episode 4) and last but not least, Mandy Barton (episode 20). I am honored to have these women on the podcast and proud that of the work they are doing in the community. I also take a moment to speak about the progress women have made in society, but share an incident that happened to me personally in the the local San Pedro facebook group that exemplifies why we still have a long way to go. In the process I shout out a couple of amazing guys, Joshua Stecker, Editor of the San Pedro Magazine, for highlighting these amazing women in the community on the cover of the magazine , and Steve Casares, admin of the SP facebook group, who stepped in and supported me in my experience on the group page. In this episode I interview the only female candidate in this year's race for Honorary Mayor. Pam grew up in San Pedro, attending Mary Star elementary and high school. Her first experience fundraising in San Pedro was during her run for Mary Star Fiesta Queen when she was in high school. Since then she has continued to raise money for local events and charities within our community. Pam on raising money locally : "'It's hard. It's hard work. But people coming out of every corner just wanting to help has been overwhelming to me... its incredible." - Pam Costa This is the third Honorary Mayor campaign that she's been a part of and her first time as a candidate herself. For her husband's campaign two years ago she was instrumental in raising over $50,000, which was the most that had been raised until that point. She's hoping to beat her previous record. Pam on her fundraising passion: " I've always wanted to give back and embrace certain charities that have been important to me." -Pam Costa She talks about other women that have inspired her and the charities that motivated her in her decision to run for Honorary Mayor. She is speaks highly of the San Pedro community and hopes to see more activities and entertainment venues to come in the downtown area. We aspiringly speak about what it'd be like to have a major venue in San Pedro that could potentially attract huge talents. Pam Costa is raising money for Maria's Closet, Pedro Pet Pals and Port of Los Angeles High School. He joins us tonight to discuss Black History Month, share his stories, and help give credit to the minorities who have helped shape this country. Without minorities, we would not be the nation we are today. We discuss the origins of Black History Month, experiences with helping others learn about black culture and contributions, all while enjoying each other’s company. The show is almost like the trifecta of Christophers as there are three on this episode. The team even gets Mr. Banks to throw out a Quick Save as they look at what they learned for the week. This week the duo puts forth a discussion built on the holidays but with a twist. The episode starts talking about Brett K the failure and the dismissal of all the ethical complaints lodged against him from the hearings. The good news is that there is a local charity you can support called Haven that helps domestic violence victims and sexual assault victims locally. The episode continues with a look at christmas and holiday traditions from around the world. They talk about their favorite traditions and what they learned from those around the world who also celebrate the holiday in their own fashion. They move on to look at Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and her progressive beliefs. They talk through her support of Nancy Pelosi along with her new proposed Green New Deal. #156: Predicting 2020 and The Competition If you thought the show was becoming stale, check out this week's episode with the C Plus Plus duo, which is their new nickname thanks to an amazing listener last week. The duo talks through a Florida community that got hit by the Marijuana Bug and had a 12 year old sell marijuana edibles to students in one of their counties. The problem comes when Fox and Friends tries to associate Marijuana with overdosing and toxic environment that harms children. The child got 7 felonies for distributing the drug and Tanner goes on a rant to discuss that there is no reason why this child should face that many years in jail for selling pot. They also talk about the local charity of the week called Creative Youth Center in Grand Rapids, promoting creative writing skills amongst local children within the Grand Rapids city limits. This charity helps students bring out their creative skills and develop creative thinking skills to help them have a more rounded life. They continue with a Hanna Rant on Thermodynamics and some of the discussions that have plagued his facebook wall over the last week. This quick science segment tackles how some of the inconsistencies that people normally like to spout when they want to disprove evolution. The show ends discussing some tactics that should be used in the 2020 election period. The discussion surrounds some of the key points on how to tackle the Trump Problem and how we can focus on creating a better more constructive environment within our government. The show ends with Hanna’s and Tanner’s Quick Saves of the week.
