Terrifying & True | The Murder of Brian Barrett: TalHotBlond and the Internet Love Triangle Murder

Weekly Spooky

The murder of Brian Barrett became one of the most disturbing true crime cases of the early internet age: a deadly online love triangle built on catfishing, fake identities, chatroom deception, jealousy, and obsession. In 2006, 22-year-old Brian Barrett was shot and killed outside Dynabrade Corporation in Clarence, New York, near Buffalo. At first, the murder seemed almost motiveless. Brian was a college student, athlete, Little League coach, and future teacher with no obvious enemies. But investigators soon uncovered a digital trail involving Pogo chatrooms, Yahoo instant messages, online romance, and a username that would become infamous: TalHotBlond. This episode of Terrifying & True investigates the real story behind the Brian Barrett murder, the TalHotBlond case, and the online deception that led to violence. Thomas Montgomery, a 46-year-old married father, had been posing online as an 18-year-old Marine sniper named Tommy. Mary Shieler, a 45-year-old mother in West Virginia, was posing as her own teenage daughter, using the girl's photos and voice to maintain the fantasy. Brian Barrett entered the situation as himself — a real 22-year-old man caught between two adults hiding behind fake ideAs the lies unraveled, Montgomery became consumed by jealousy, humiliation, and obsession. The online rivalry moved from Pogo games and instant messages into the workplace, where Brian and Thomas both worked. Then, on September 15, 2006, Brian walked to his pickup truck after his shift and was ambushed with a .30-caliber rifle. We examine the evidence against Thomas Montgomery, the DNA on the peach pit, the missing rifle, the chat logs, the TalHotBlond deception, Mary Shieler's role, and why the case became known as the internet love triangle murder. But at the center of the story is not a screen name, a scandal, or a twist. It is Brian Barrett — a son, brother, friend, coach, student, and future teacher whose life was stolen by obsession. We're telling that story tonight.

Giant Mess podcast host. Neal Lynch is breaking down the turbulent and largely disappointing 2026 season for the New York Mets up to the All-Star Break. From a disastrous 10-21 start in April to a brief glimmer of hope in May, it has been a rough ride that culminated in a major collapse and the firing of manager Carlos Mendoza in June. We discuss the standout performances from rookies Carson Benge and A.J. Ewing, plus Juan Soto carrying the offense and earning a starting nod in the 2026 All-Star Game. However, with a 40-57 record at the break, baffling mental errors on the basepaths, and Little League-level defense, the Mets have their worst halfway record since 2018. Join us as we explore the looming August 3 trade deadline and whether the front office will sell off pieces like Freddy Peralta, Luke Weaver, and impending free agents like Brooks Raley. We also cover the struggles and staggering strikeout rates of major additions like Bo Bichette, Steve Cohen's confidence in President of Baseball Operations David Stearns, and what the rest of this season holds for interim manager Andy Green.#mets #nymets #newyorkmets #mlb #baseball #carlosmendoza #juansoto #franciscolindor #mlbtradedeadline #mlbtraderumors #davidstearns #stevecohen #metsbaseball NY Mets Fan Rants & Analysis - https://bit.ly/MetsYTPlaylist Movie Reviews - https://bit.ly/GiantMessMovieReviews TV Show Reactions - https://bit.ly/GiantMessTV Funny Stories -  https://bit.ly/GiantMessFunnyStoriesABOUT NEAL LYNCH:Neal Lynch is the creator and host of Giant Mess, a podcast blending sports commentary, pop culture analysis, and storytelling. We talk about the hidden “most expensive” part of youth travel baseball: uninformed choices made out of fear, comparison, and pressure. Bobby breaks down early bloomers versus late bloomers, why so many kids quit by 14, and how work ethic and patience beat hype almost every time.We also get practical. What should you ask a travel team before you commit? Bobby explains why guest player policies matter, how the true all-in cost can double once uniforms, facility fees, hotels, and gate charges hit, and what a real development plan should look like when a player struggles. Then we tackle arm care and pitcher overuse on weekends, plus the truth about Perfect Game and PBR rankings as marketing tools versus real recruiting signals. If you want clearer priorities, fewer regrets, and a healthier path through travel baseball, hit play, subscribe, share this with a baseball parent, and leave a quick review so more families can find it.Support the showFollow:  X | @BCUPod / IG @baseballcoachesunplugged Website - https://www.athlete1.netSponsor: The Netting Professionalshttps://www.nettingpros.com

Hump Day! Should be nice for most of the day with rain moving in after 3pm. Warming up into the low-90's this weekend. In the news this morning, that biohacker guy reveals that he's got an incurable disease, a high-rise building in NYC is evacuated after support beams buckled yesterday, a daycare worker is being sued after tossing a kid in the air and failing to properly catch the kid, some people might be getting Covid tax refunds, an outbreak of explosive diarrhea is sweeping the nation, and a bigfoot hunter claims he has DNA evidence of a squatch! In sports, the Brewers took both games from the Cardinals yesterday and got some help from their rookie prospect who got called up to the BIGS, a recap of yesterday's World Cup games and a look at the quarterfinals that begin tomorrow, the brain of deceased NFL player Marshawn Kneeland tested positive for CTE, and former NFL player Marcellus Wiley gets arrested. We let you know what's on TV & streaming today. Plus, Wayne Manor is for sale if you've got a few million bucks laying around. And for a bit less money, you can buy some trash that was collected outside of Travis & Taylor's wedding in NYC last week…or maybe a bag of air from inside the venue. A brave family dog saves a kid from a bear attack by chasing off the animal…Kelsey Pfendler just made history as the first woman to solo row from California to Hawaii…and a woman suffering from Alzheimer's is rescued from a fire by her neighbors. On hump day we like to play "One Gotta Go Wednesday", and this week the choices were streaming services - Netflix…Disney+…or Amazon Prime??? Elsewhere in sports, Jalen Brunson helped the Knicks win the NBA Championship with an injured wrist that required surgery, the IOC is going to allow Russians to compete in the Olympics in Los Angeles, the Packers' Jayden Reed recently got engaged, and the Tartan Army may have left America…but they recently made a massive donation to a charity in Massachusetts to help kids in the Bay State. With it getting so hot all over the place and no signs of relief anytime soon…it's a great time to remind people of some Summer safety tips for your pups. And with today being "National Video Game Day", we looked at a list of the greatest video games of all time. And in today's edition of "Bad News with Happy Music", we had stories about a bear that busted into an occupied hotel room in Tibet, a robot vacuum that exploded and critically injured a man in Australia, a Little League president that's being accused of embezzling a ton of money from the league, and a killer elephant in Nepal that's killed a bunch of people.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Travel Baseball Can Cost You More Than Money

Travel baseball can cost you tens of thousands of dollars, and the real bill is bigger than the checks you are writing. Here is what you are actually paying for.   MLB agent Matt Hannaford adds up the real cost of travel baseball so you can stop overpaying and start spending on what actually develops your son. Subscribe for the insider playbook on recruiting, the transfer portal, and the MLB Draft.   WHAT YOU'LL LEARN The full cost of travel baseball that most families never add up Why spending more does not mean your son is developing more When a roster spot you are paying for is no longer worth it The cost that has nothing to do with money: your relationship with your son How to capture the benefit of travel baseball at the lowest possible cost   Matt Hannaford answers three real questions from travel baseball parents, and every one of them comes back to cost. First, the obvious bill: entry fees, program dues, flights, rental cars, hotels, and food. Matt is direct that travel baseball is a completely different animal than Little League, and that the financial buy-in is real before you talk about anything else.   Then comes the cost most families never see coming. Parents spend all of this money chasing exposure early, and end up in the hole 20, 40, sometimes hundreds of thousands of dollars, only to reach 16 and wonder why their son still is not being recruited. Matt explains the order that protects your wallet: development first, then competition, then exposure, because August 1 of junior year is the first time a Division I program can even contact you. You can go to almost no events, focus on development, and your son is still not behind. He points to Steph Curry, who developed his game and went to Davidson, and Evan Longoria, who went from junior college to Long Beach State to the third overall pick.   When Jim from Naperville asks whether he is just paying $3,000 to develop the starters, Matt gives you the two questions to ask a coach before you write the check, and the respectful meeting to have when the program stops adding value. And the deepest cost is not money at all. When Tom from Louisville asks whether travel ball is development or status, Matt gets honest about the ranking system and the value of failure, citing the start to Austin Riley's career. Former big leaguer Danny Espinosa shares what a real win looks like: your son saying, it's okay, I love you. Related topics include college recruiting, scholarships, the transfer portal, NIL, and rec ball versus travel ball.   TIMESTAMPS 0:00 - The Real Cost of Travel Baseball 1:40 - The Costs Nobody Adds Up 4:41 - The Benefit at the Lowest Cost 16:25 - Spending Big and Still Not Recruited 22:06 - Paying $3,000 to Sit the Bench 28:47 - The Cost That Isn't Money 31:26 - Why Rankings Cost You Focus   ABOUT THE MVA PODCAST Matt Hannaford is an MLB agent who gives you the insider playbook on college recruiting, the transfer portal, and MLB Draft decisions. This daily comedy show starts with America's latest accidental export: ranch dressing. Apparently visitors from overseas are treating Hidden Valley like it's some kind of forbidden miracle sauce, which naturally leads to TSA reminding everyone that ranch is, in fact, a liquid. Yes, this is apparently the timeline we live in.From there the gang admits way more than they probably should about their eating habits. Secret snack stashes. Bathroom snacks. Car snacks. Desk snacks. Entire bags of Doritos disappearing in one sitting. Pringles eaten like communion wafers. If you've ever looked at a family-size bag and thought, "Challenge accepted," congratulations—you'll fit right in.Things only get weirder when the conversation shifts into early-bird dinners, GERD, gout, Tums lingerie, and the universal struggle of realizing adulthood slowly turns everyone into someone's grandparents. Turns out eating at 4:30 isn't a personality flaw... it's just scheduling. The Food News somehow manages to get even more ridiculous as Crumbl's insanely sugary dirty sodas make an appearance, along with customers who somehow think adding nearly 150 grams of sugar to ten cans of Coke is a balanced lifestyle choice. We are both impressed and deeply concerned. Then Rafe delivers another unforgettable edition of the E-Memoriam, saying goodbye to catalytic converters after thieves strike local station vehicles, roasting the show's own narcissism, reliving the heartbreaking Little League roster disaster that crushed one eight-year-old's dreams, calling out "24/7" HVAC companies that apparently define time differently than the rest of us, and finally honoring the Kentucky Fried Chicken employee who tackled an armed robbery suspect like he was auditioning for the next Jason Statham movie.Naturally, the story escalates into a completely fake blockbuster trailer starring Jason Statham as Colonel Sanders and Marvin Diesel—the practical cousin nobody asked for but everyone somehow needed. It's another completely unhinged daily comedy show packed with weird news, sarcastic debates, food obsessions, pop culture nonsense, and the kind of conversations that somehow make perfect sense before 10 a.m.If you love hilarious stories, ridiculous hypotheticals, celebrity commentary, strange internet trends, and friends roasting each other nonstop, you've found your people. Thanks for listening to another daily comedy show from The Rizzuto Show.
