War and police work broke your husband, then he ditched his meds. Do you stand by a spiraling man, or shield your sons from him? It's Feedback Friday! And in case you didn't already know it, Jordan Harbinger (@JordanHarbinger) and Gabriel Mizrahi (@GabeMizrahi) banter and take your comments and questions for Feedback Friday right here every week! If you want us to answer your question, register your feedback, or tell your story on one of our upcoming weekly Feedback Friday episodes, drop us a line at friday@jordanharbinger.com. Now let's dive in!Full show notes and resources can be found here: jordanharbinger.com/1374On This Week's Feedback Friday:Don't want to hear about Gabe's Spanish hippie countryside misadventures? Fast forward to 16 minutes and 20 seconds!19 years married, two young sons, and a husband whose army malaria-drug trial and years as a cop left him traumatized — now off his meds, raging at every institution on Earth, and dropping $60K on domain names in a manic spree. Your compassion is bottomless, but so is the toll on the kids. When does devotion quietly curdle into self-sacrifice?Nine years in, blended families and shared pets, and you don't doubt his love for a second — but your name isn't on the deed, the mortgage, or anything a hospital or a court would ever recognize. Raise it, and he changes the subject. You want protection, not necessarily a ring. How do you get a straight answer without lobbing an ultimatum?Your mother-in-law raised four thriving kids in a spotless home, and now you can barely cross her rooms for the Dollar Tree hauls of stuff she already owns and can't find. She's hypersensitive, a past with the bottle lurks nearby, and you're the closest of her kids — so the job of stepping in falls to you. How do you broach the hoarding without shattering her?Recommendation of the Week: visualping.io — a tireless little watchdog that monitors any web page for changes and emails you the moment something moves, whether it's a piece of software that won't auto-update, a Wikipedia edit, your own site going down, or the kids' Little League schedule. Jordan's quietly made it a staple of his workflow.Weeks ago you were sharing custody of Frankie with an ex who demanded 50-50 but turned up maybe 10 percent of the year and never chipped in a dime for vet bills. Jordan and Gabe told you to keep her full-time — so you finally sent the message you'd been dreading for weeks. Leveraging Thought Leadership with Peter Winick
Why Personal Branding Isn't About You At All | Vanessa Errecarte | 733

Leveraging Thought Leadership with Peter Winick

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 20, 2026 22:12

"Personal brand" might be the most cringe-inducing phrase in business vocabulary. Say it out loud to a room of accomplished professionals and watch the shoulders tense — it sounds like self-promotion, follower counts, and algorithm-chasing. Vanessa Errecarte,  Founder of Marketing Simplified, the UC Davis Graduate School of Management lecturer who built one of the nation's only for-credit MBA courses on the subject, thinks the term isn't wrong — it's just been hijacked. Her argument is simple but reframes everything: a personal brand was never about you. It's about intriguing people with what you know. Errecarte walks through how she teaches this to students who assume they need one more degree, one more title, or ten more years of experience before they've "earned" a point of view — and why that assumption is backwards. Disney didn't wait to explain who Walt Disney was before telling the story of a mouse and an idea. Neither should you. The conversation gets tactical fast. Errecarte shares the story of a Master's student — a Division I pitcher with "no experience" — who discovered his own expertise by describing how he coaches Little League kids through overcoming self-consciousness on the mound. The insight wasn't buried in a resume; it just needed the right questions to surface it. That's the throughline of Errecarte's approach: frameworks, not talent alone, are what make thought leadership teachable and repeatable. She and Peter also dig into why hesitancy is a signal worth paying attention to rather than a reason to stay quiet, why a small audience is actually the ideal place to test new ideas, and why AI is compressing the timeline for professionals to move from "great at the skill" to "great at the thought." If you've ever bristled at the phrase "personal brand" but suspected your best ideas were going unheard, this episode offers a genuinely different way to think about it — and a workable starting point for the back half of a career. Three Key Takeaways: • Personal branding is about service, not self-promotion. The most memorable professionals aren't the ones broadcasting their credentials — they're the ones sharing what they know in a way that helps others think more clearly. Reframing "personal brand" as "what value can I offer" removes most of the discomfort people feel about it. • You don't need more experience to have a point of view. Errecarte's framework helps people — from first-year MBA students to seasoned executives — surface expertise they already have but don't recognize as valuable. The right questions, not more credentials, are usually what's missing. • Treat your career like a lab, especially early on. A small audience is a feature, not a limitation — it's where you can test ideas, get honest feedback, and build confidence before the stakes get higher. Waiting for a "finished" idea before sharing anything publicly is a bigger risk than sharing something imperfect. If this conversation got you thinking about how to actually build and scale your own expertise, Peter's new book is the natural next step. The Thought Leadership Handbook, written with co-authors Bill Sherman and Naren Aryal, breaks down exactly what it takes to shape, package, and scale your ideas in a crowded market — the same "framework over talent" thinking Vanessa talked about today, applied to your whole body of work. It's available now at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Bookshop, and Amplify, and you can learn more at thoughtleadershiphandbook.com.

Player of the Week is Anna-Lynn Clark of the Johnson County (North Carolina) Little League team, praised for dominant World Series pitching and leadership. Guest Ben Cattaruzzi, Johnson County's Little League Softball World Series championship coach, explains his coaching background, the qualification path, North Carolina's strong Little League/travel ecosystem, and players' college aspirations, and endorses Square Cuts. Twenty years after helping the St. Louis Cardinals win the 2006 World Series, Randy Flores is back with The Rizzuto Show — except now he's sitting on the other side of baseball, helping find the players who could become the Cardinals' next generation of stars. The Cardinals assistant GM of scouting and acquisition joins this comedy podcast to talk about Draft365: Scouting MLB's Future Stars, a behind-the-scenes look at a side of professional baseball fans almost never get to see.And when we say behind the scenes, we mean it.Flores explains how roughly 23 Cardinals scouts spread across the country evaluate elite high school and college talent, how players make their way onto the organization's radar, and what happens when scouts, analysts, data engineers, performance specialists and actual human eyeballs all have to agree on which teenager might someday be standing at Busch Stadium.Turns out it's slightly more complicated than your uncle saying, “Kid's got a good swing.”Randy also explains just how absurdly difficult it is to reach Major League Baseball. The crew immediately starts Googling percentages, Rafe consults what basically becomes “Gronk AI,” and everyone arrives at the same scientific conclusion:Your odds aren't great.Even the players who get drafted were usually THE player where they came from — the best kid in their town, school or region — only to arrive in professional baseball and discover they're now surrounded by hundreds of other guys who were also the best kid everywhere they came from.Welcome to the world's most emotionally devastating All-Star team.Flores talks about seeing that firsthand after being drafted himself and walking into the Yankees system, where he realized his team was only one of several groups making cuts — inside just one organization. Multiply that by the rest of Major League Baseball and suddenly “making the show” sounds less like a career plan and more like surviving a very athletic Hunger Games. The conversation also dives into Cardinals prospects like Jordan Walker and Joshua Baez, including how the unusual COVID-era draft helped St. Louis feel confident about Walker and how adversity in the minor leagues helped prepare Baez for his eventual opportunity. And despite baseball becoming more obsessed with analytics, Randy explains why scouting still can't be reduced to numbers on a screen. Players leave home. They struggle. They get hurt. They fail for possibly the first time in their lives. Scouts aren't only evaluating what someone can do when everything is going right — they're trying to figure out what happens when baseball punches them directly in the mouth. That's where the human side still matters. For parents convinced they're currently raising the next MLB superstar, Flores also delivers some advice that may save everybody several thousand dollars and one deeply uncomfortable car ride home: if the kid is truly good enough, scouts will find them. Parents can help most by supporting the kid instead of turning every Little League game into Game 7 of the World Series. The pressure is already enormous. Kids now have rankings, social media clips and embarrassing moments that can follow them indefinitely. Randy's advice is refreshingly simple: home should still be the safe place. We also get into Randy's unusual road from an eight-year MLB career to graduate school, broadcasting, coaching, entrepreneurship and eventually a phone call from John Mozeliak asking whether he'd consider becoming a scouting director — to which Randy essentially responded, “Cool. What's a scouting director?”Career planning!Plus, Randy previews the 20-year reunion of the 2006 World Series champion Cardinals and explains what he hopes fans take away from Draft365: behind every prospect is an enormous group of people obsessively trying to keep the Cardinals' pipeline loaded with talent.By the end, Rafe wants to be scouted, Moon wants a job, Jon Lovitz's performance as a scout in A League of Their Own is finally evaluated by an actual professional, and somehow Marla Hooch helps bring the interview home. It's baseball insight, St. Louis Cardinals history and just enough nonsense to remind Randy he willingly walked into a comedy podcast.Twenty-five minutes later, we're all convinced we're getting drafted. We're not.But that's never stopped this comedy podcast before.Follow The Rizzuto Show → linktr.ee/rizzshow for more from your favorite daily comedy show.Connect with The Rizzuto Show Comedy Podcast online → 1057thepoint.com/RizzShow.Hear The Rizz Show daily on the radio at 105.7 The Point | Hubbard Radio in St. Louis, MO.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
