Secrets of the Corporate Game
141. Why Quitting Your Corporate Job Might Be the Worst Way to Start a Business with Mike Shannon

Secrets of the Corporate Game

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 1, 2026 30:01

There is a very loud version of entrepreneurship online right now: quit the job, burn the safety net, go all in, and figure it out later. I get the appeal. I also think that advice can get expensive very quickly, especially when the business has not been validated yet. Mike Shannon joins me to talk about the much messier, smarter side of starting a business. Mike has built multiple companies, appeared on Shark Tank, worked in AI, and wrote Sweaty Equity, a book about the unglamorous middle of entrepreneurship. His story is not the polished founder myth. It is Shark Tank one day, Chicago Bulls laundry room the next, then years of pivots, investor pressure, customer discovery, and learning how to actually build something that works. If you are a corporate professional, side hustler, first-time founder, or future entrepreneur wondering whether you should quit your job to start a business, this conversation is your reality check. We talk about why keeping your day job can create runway, why "build the thing, sell the thing" matters more than startup hype, and how to use messy action without blowing up your career stability. Inside this episode • Why quitting your job too early can create unnecessary founder pressure • How Mike Shannon went from Shark Tank with Mark Cuban to the Chicago Bulls laundry room • Why business validation matters more than investor validation • The simple startup framework: build the thing, sell the thing • How customer discovery helps you avoid forcing the wrong idea into the market • What Sweaty Equity reveals about the messy middle of entrepreneurship What's one "corporate game" rule you've learned the hard way?

Meanwhile, Rizz shares the emotional rollercoaster of his son's surprise birthday party after the poor kid spent all day convinced nobody loved him. Nothing says “family bonding” like emotional manipulation followed by chocolate cake. Then comes the story that absolutely broke the internet: a Florida woman gets pulled over for texting while driving… except the officer claims she was holding the phone in her RIGHT HAND. Tiny issue there: she doesn't have a right hand. The bodycam footage somehow gets even more awkward as the cop doubles down harder than a guy trying to explain crypto at Buffalo Wild Wings. The gang breaks down the absurdity of the situation, internet reactions, and why this may be the greatest accidental self-own in police bodycam history. Also: Rafe casually reveals somebody once touched tips in the woods during Little League and honestly the show never emotionally recovers from there. This episode has everything:Florida chaos. And enough sarcastic nonsense to legally qualify as group therapy.Hell, Michigan is officially for sale. That's right — for the low, low price of $625,000, you too can own seven acres of pure Midwestern chaos complete with a wedding chapel, mini golf, souvenir shop, and an ice cream stand called “The Crematory.” Because apparently somebody looked at a normal small-town business plan and said, “Needs more eternal damnation.”The gang debates whether Hell is secretly a genius investment opportunity, whether Lern should become mayor of Hell, and how long before somebody turns the whole thing into a TikTok influencer commune with haunted goat yoga and craft IPA flights called “Satan's Hazy Delight.”Lern unveils her absolutely unhinged patriotic remix promoting America's 250th birthday celebration featuring CNC Music Factory, Vanilla Ice, Flo Rida, Milli Vanilli, and enough early-90s energy drinks to restart the economy. Honestly, if this lineup doesn't scream “government-funded county fair energy,” nothing does. A Portland mom grabs a stick and chases an intruder out of her house after hearing threats against her family. Naturally, this immediately turns into a debate about whether “crazy meets crazy” is actually a legitimate life strategy… which, according to Lern, it absolutely is. Honestly? She may have a point. Or she may just want an excuse to scream at strangers in Target. Jury's still out. Then the gang discovers the existence of chess boxing — yes, actual boxing mixed with speed chess — proving once again that humans were never meant to have free time. Imagine trying to remember your opening strategy immediately after getting punched in the face by a guy named Vlad who definitely owns fingerless gloves. What if the pressure you're putting on your fundraising campaign is actually the thing slowing it down?In this episode, I'm talking about something I watched play out on a Little League field this weekend: two coaches, same-age kids, same skill level, completely different energy, and completely different outcomes. And I couldn't stop thinking about how much it looked like what I see inside fundraising campaigns every single week. When you hold too tightly to a goal, when every quiet day feels like failure, when the whole campaign starts to feel like a final exam, that pressure changes everything: your messaging tightens, your team feels it, and your donors feel it. And ironically, the pressure creates the very outcome you were trying to avoid. I talk about what pressure actually does to campaign performance, why three of my clients inside The Purpose & Profit Club® thought they were behind when they were actually ahead, the difference between a dirty win and a beautiful loss, and what it really means to lead a campaign well all the way to the end.Topics:How white-knuckling a fundraising campaign changes the outcome, and not in the way you hopeThe payoff of pressure and why we hold onto it even when it hurts usWhat pressure actually does to campaign pacing, messaging, and team energyWhy three clients thought they were behind, and were actually aheadThe difference between a dirty win and a beautiful loss in fundraisingHow to lead a campaign well without making it a final examFor a full list of links and resources mentioned in this episode, click here.Bloomerang is the complete donor, volunteer, and fundraising management solution that helps thousands of nonprofits deliver a better giving experience and create sustainable, thriving organizations. Welcoming Listeners to Mediums and Messages In this episode of Signs of Life: Mediums and Messages, host Joe Paretta welcomes listeners to the live call-in program presented by the Forever Family Foundation. He invites callers seeking messages from loved ones in spirit and announces upcoming foundation activities, including an online medium raffle and a summer grief transformation retreat in Connecticut. Joe then introduces the evening's guest medium, Rebecca, describing her as a Forever Family Foundation certified medium, author, energetic healer, and pastoral counselor. Rebecca's Historic Home and a Vision for Grief Retreats Before taking calls, Joe and Rebecca discuss her recent purchase of an 1856 home in New Hampshire. Rebecca explains that the house previously served different purposes over the years, including connections to blacksmithing, horses, printing, and bullet making. She says she dreamed about a printer's drawer before finding the house and felt spiritually guided to purchase it. Rebecca describes activity in the home, including an incident involving an old clothespin in the attic, but says the presence feels welcoming rather than threatening. She also shares her hope of eventually using the home as a retreat setting where grieving individuals can receive more time, care, and understanding. Stephanie Receives Messages About Her Parents The first caller, Stephanie from Florida, receives a reading in which Rebecca says Stephanie's father comes through first with a message of love and a desire to be remembered and spoken about. After Stephanie reveals that her mother is also deceased, Rebecca says her parents are together in spirit and describes the mother as joyful and affectionate toward her husband after a marriage lasting more than sixty years. Rebecca also connects Stephanie's father with his brother Francis, presenting this as additional validation that family members remain connected beyond physical death. Cathy's Mother, Family Connections, and Holiday Memories The next caller, Cathy from Pennsylvania, is told that she has healing or angelic energy around her before Rebecca connects with Cathy's mother in spirit. Rebecca initially sees a nativity scene, and Cathy later confirms that her mother died shortly before Christmas, giving the image personal meaning. The reading also includes references to Cathy's sister, her children who are seeking new living spaces, and repeated “J” names within the family. Rebecca says Cathy's mother remains involved with the family and attentive to the lives of her children and grandchildren. Susan's Son and Vicki's Birthday Message Susan from Tennessee receives a reading centered on her son in spirit. Rebecca says he wants Susan's husband, Daryl, to know how important he was to him and emphasizes that his death was not caused by anything Susan or Daryl did. The reading includes references to his sister, hawks as possible signs, humor, a puffy jacket, and a young relative watching Thomas the Tank Engine. Later, Vicki from New Mexico receives messages first associated with an aunt and cousin, followed by a connection from her deceased son. Joe describes seeing her son as a little boy in a baseball uniform or on a Little League-style card, which Vicki connects to her family's time in Germany. He presents the message as an early birthday gift from her son, since her birthday is the following week. Debbie's Father-in-Law and the Closing Message of Healing In the final brief reading, Debbie from Ohio receives impressions connected with her father-in-law, whom Joe associates with an acknowledged drinking problem and a message of recognition or accountability from spirit. Rebecca also senses a deceased female best friend, saying that this friend wants Debbie to know the afterlife is real and that she may be responsible for signs Debbie has noticed, particularly through music. As the show closes, Joe thanks Rebecca and the listeners, encourages people to visit the Forever Family Foundation, and repeats the program's central reassurance: loved ones remain close, and he believes science will one day prove that consciousness survives physical death.

Great Benefits Nobody Knows About Are Wasted Benefits The biggest failure in corporate benefits isn't a weak package — it's a strong package that employees can't find or don't understand. Navigation is the missing layer. If an employee can't get a real-time answer to "my knee hurts, what do I do," they'll go to the emergency room, every time. 2. Healthcare Navigation Is the Next Essential Platform Layer Jon's view from 20 years in-house: the employers who are winning aren't just offering more benefits, they're offering smarter access to what they already have. A platform that speaks plain English, routes employees to the right care, and answers questions in real time is increasingly non-negotiable. 3. Site-of-Care Redirection Saves Real Money for Everyone Emergency room copays for an ear infection versus urgent care or telemedicine — the difference is significant for both the employee and the employer. Navigation platforms that help employees understand their options and redirect care appropriately are one of the clearest ROI plays in the benefits stack. 4. ROI Models Don't Always Capture the Full Picture Jon's GLP-1 example is a sharp one: the short-term cost data on weight-loss medications looks difficult, but the downstream impact on joint health, blood pressure, cholesterol, and energy is real and compounding. Sometimes the right benefits decision requires setting the spreadsheet aside and taking a bigger picture view of what it means to help someone get healthier. 5. Stop Keeping Your Benefits a Secret For years, many employers treated their benefits as proprietary information — worried that competitors would copy them. That era is ending. The companies winning on talent are putting their lifestyle support benefits front and center in offer letters, career pages, and recruitment conversations. If you spent the money, get the credit. 6. Real Stories Drive Benefits Utilization More Than Bullet Points Jon's open enrollment philosophy from nearly two decades of in-house experience: the most effective benefits communication isn't a list of what you offer — it's a real story of how someone used it. Personal examples create emotional connection and drive employees to actually take advantage of what's available to them. 7. Caregiving Benefits Reach Further Than the Employee Jon's story about using a caregiving support benefit to help his mother through a terminal illness illustrates a point that's easy to miss: when a company helps an employee navigate elder care, legal planning, or family crisis, the benefit extends to the whole family. And when families feel taken care of, employees stay. 8. On-Demand Pediatric Telemedicine Is One of the Most Underappreciated Benefits A 2 AM croup episode that stayed out of the emergency room because of a telemedicine call is worth more to a parent than almost any other benefit in the package. If you're offering this and not talking about it constantly, you're leaving impact on the table. 9. Claims-Based Personalization Is the Most Exciting AI Development in Benefits AI that proactively nudges employees toward preventive care — based on their own claims data — is moving from concept to reality. Annual physicals, colonoscopies, mammograms: catching things before they escalate is better for the employee, cheaper for the employer, and the kind of thing that makes people feel like their company genuinely cares about their health. 10. An Ounce of Prevention Is Still the Best Benefits ROI The math hasn't changed: early detection and preventive care cost a fraction of late-stage treatment. The technology has finally caught up to make personalized preventive nudges possible at scale. The employers investing here now are building a healthier, more productive workforce — and a more defensible benefits budget.   CHAPTERS:   00:00 – Dad Talk: Presence Over Everything Jon and Adam open with a candid conversation about working parenthood, FaceTime at 4 AM, coaching Little League, and what it means to be truly present for the moments that matter. 03:00 – Meet Jon & The Alterity Group Jon introduces himself and The Alterity Group — a third-party benefits and HR tech advisory firm helping large employers find the right vendors and maximize those relationships across their full HR technology stack. 05:30 – Where to Start: Evaluating a Benefits Package Jon's first move when assessing a company's benefits competitiveness: understand who the client is and what they're actually trying to accomplish — because retention goals look different from recruitment goals, and blue-collar needs look different from financial services. 08:00 – Total Rewards Is More Than a Salary Number How the right HR technology helps companies communicate total rewards — base, bonus, equity, benefits, and employer healthcare contributions — clearly to both candidates and current employees. 10:30 – The Utilization Problem: Great Benefits Nobody Knows About Jon's diagnosis of the biggest waste in corporate benefits: employers spend significant money on programs that employees never use, simply because nobody told them it existed. The fix isn't more benefits — it's better navigation. 13:00 – Healthcare Navigation: The One-Stop Shop The case for navigation platforms that guide employees to the right care in plain English — whether that's a musculoskeletal app for a sore knee or telemedicine for an ear infection — and why real-time answers drive better outcomes for everyone. 16:00 – Site-of-Care Redirection: The Hidden Cost Saver Why sending an employee to urgent care instead of the emergency room for an ear infection saves money for both the employer and the employee — and how navigation platforms are making smarter care routing the norm, not the exception. 19:00 – Rethinking Benefits ROI Beyond the Numbers Jon's honest take on GLP-1 benefits: the short-term cost data looks scary, but helping an employee lose 50 pounds, lower their blood pressure, and reduce joint pain is a win that doesn't always show up in a 12-month ROI model. Sometimes you have to take the bigger picture view. 22:00 – Why Companies Used to Hide Their Benefits — and Why That's Changing Jon traces the shift from employers keeping their benefits close to the vest to the current moment where leading companies are putting lifestyle support benefits front and center in offer letters and recruitment materials. 25:00 – Tell the Stories. Use Real Examples. Jon's open enrollment philosophy from 19 years of in-house experience: the most effective benefits communication uses real employee stories — not bullet points on a flyer. 27:30 – A Caregiving Benefit That Helped His Family Jon's most personal moment: how a caregiving support benefit helped his mother navigate will preparation, power of attorney, and advanced directives during a family member's terminal illness. 31:00 – The 2 AM Pediatrician Call A vivid story about the power of on-demand pediatric telemedicine: Jon's croup-prone infant, a 2 AM barking cough, and a provider who talked him through treatment — avoiding an emergency room trip entirely. 34:00 – Claims-Based Personalization: The AI Frontier in Benefits Jon's optimistic take on what's coming: AI that mines claims data to proactively nudge employees toward preventive care — annual physicals, colonoscopies, mammograms — catching things early before they become expensive and life-altering. 37:00 – An Ounce of Prevention Jon closes with the simple math behind preventive care investment: catching something early is almost always cheaper and better for the employee than treating it late.
