"Clinton seeks common ground with Republicans," reported the Associated Press in 1994. "Obama hosts dinner, urges bipartisanship," announced the AP again, in 2009. "Resist Trump? On Immigration, Top Democrats See Room for Compromise," stated The New York Times in late 2024. For decades, we've heard Democratic policymakers extol the virtues of working with Republicans. Through a series of stock terms, e.g. bipartisanship, finding common ground, reaching across the aisle, compromising, they tout their willingness to set aside their political differences with Republicans in order to stop quibbling, quit stalling, work pragmatically, and––the holiest of the holies––Get Things Done. This all might sound well and good; surely an active government is better than an idle, incapacitated one. But which things, exactly, are getting done? Why is it that the act of making decisions or passing legislation is deemed more important to elected officials than the actual content of those decisions and legislation? And how does an incurious, largely compliant media contribute to the harms of a Democratic party that, in its embrace of Republican ideology under the seeming noble banner of "bipartisanship" continues to move further to the right on key issues? On this episode, we dissect the popular appeal for bipartisanship, examine how folksy calls for “Washington” to “work together” more often than not serve to promote war, austerity, anti-LBGTQ policies and crackdown on vulnerable migrants, and show how this seemingly high minded formulation serves to push Republicans further right and launder the Democrats' increasingly conservative political agenda. Our guest is journalist and author Malaika Jabali.

Happy Monday! Sam and Emma speak with David Dayen, executive editor at The American Prospect and co-host of the Organized Money podcast, to discuss the continued fallout from last Tuesday's elections. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on the ongoing recriminations of Dems' major losses in last week's elections, a GOP trifecta, Trump's border czar, Elise Stefanik, Massachusetts teachers' labor action, Trump's hush money conviction, and the House's fast-tracking of a bill perfectly suited to Trump's fashy aims, also touching on how Trump's deportation plan has been drastically understated. David Dayen then joins, diving right into the broader context of this election within an era of overwhelmingly volatile politics, both within the US – as just the third instance of three-consecutive one-term presidencies – and globally – amid international anti-incumbent backlash – and why so much of that insecurity is a direct reflection of an economically insecure electorate with little-to-no faith in their political institutions (or those in control of them). Expanding on this, Dayen walks through the contrasting narratives around the US economy, with aggregate statistics and long-term predictions not reflecting the complete disappearance of a phenomenally successful pandemic-era social safety net, rising food and housing costs amid inflation, before he, Sam, and Emma step back to reflect on the long-term narrative of inaction and piecemeal action from the Biden Administration when it came to his primary agenda item of Build Back Better. After expanding on the internal contradictions that have held the Democratic Party back so thoroughly over the last decade, David dives into the major threat of a prepared Trump Administration under Project 2025, and wraps up with the need to push our political institutions (be they media or state) to keep emphasizing oversight and accountability as we head into Trump 2.0. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma unpack the expansive plans Trump has for his recently-named border Czar, and listen to Philippe Reines – advisor to Hillary Clinton and Kamala Harris' campaigns – give his take on why the Democratic party should double down on the anti-woke. Malaika Jabali absolutely nails how Democrats' 2024 campaign ignored the working class, plus, your calls and IMs!  As the Republican National Convention comes to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Laura talks with award-winning reporter and author, Malaika Jabali, author of "It's Not You, It's Capitalism: Why It's Time to Break Up and How to Move On”. Wisconsin is one of the most racially unequal states in the country, with rising housing costs outpacing wages and one of the highest Black male incarceration rates in the nation. It's also seen a precipitous decline in Black voting — for either party. Are these things connected? Back in 2020 Jabali went to Milwaukee to find out and made a short film “Left Out“ in which she spoke to Black elected officials as well as non-voters. In this episode of Laura Flanders & Friends we'll revisit that film, hear Jabali's advice for concerned Dems, and answers, when it comes to the RNC, what's in it for Black Midwesterners? All that and a commentary from Laura. Jabali is the former Senior News and Politics Editor at Essence Magazine.“It's almost a cottage industry of trying to figure out what happened with the white working class . . . The other side of that is that you have a lot of Black non-voters. A lot of Black people are saying, ‘We don't have any options between the Republican and Democratic party' . . . So they tend to stay home. It was me trying to understand what was going on behind the numbers. I barely saw any journalism about it.” - Malaika Jabali“. . . We have a propaganda machine through the US government, media, law and policy that made it illegal to be socialists . . . Martin Luther King, the Black Power Movement, the Black Panthers, they were surveilled for any hint of thinking about any anti-capitalist thought . . . What kind of system is that where it is so hell bent on freedom, but does not give you the freedom to think about other ideas and types of policies? Happy Monday! Sam and Emma speak with Malaika Jabali, senior news and politics editor at Essence Magazine, to discuss her recent book It's Not You, It's Capitalism: Why It's Time to Break Up and How to Move On. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Israel's siege of Shifa Hospital in Gaza, the continuing international backlash against Israel's ethnic cleansing as officials call for a “Second Nakba,” the House GOP's continuing struggle against governance, Tim Scott's presidential campaign, and Big Tech and labor, also touching on the US Media's continuing double standards towards Israel's war crimes. Malaika Jabali then joins, diving right into the purpose behind her project to open up socialist and anti-capitalist critiques to a US population that's been immersed in propaganda since birth, first diving into the particular role of capitalist media in obscuring the institutional and systemic roots of major political issues in favor of individualist and behavioral explanations. Jabali walks Sam and Emma through the role of the Great Recession, in particular, in waking her and many others up to the economic and political roots of so many social struggles, an awakening furthered just a decade later with the COVID Pandemic providing proof of these political and economic systems' capability to support the public on a much broader level. After briefly running through the drastically different material impacts that come from electoral versus community organizing, they walk through the importance of social policy in bolstering the freedom of the public and undermining the leverage from the private sector, and parse through the importance of acknowledging the role race plays in class politics. Wrapping up, Malaika Jabali reaffirms the central role of community organizing in providing tangible results for the success of socialism and the failure of capitalism's lens on humanity. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma celebrate the human drive to spite your boss, watch Greta Thunberg perfectly respond to complaints of her injecting “politics” into climate activism, and discuss the harrowing footage coming out of Brandeis University's crackdown on student protest. Tim Scott drops out, Okajic from New York reflects on Vivek's campaign, and Kowalski from Nebraska gives his agriculture report. Mike from Minneapolis on midwest politics, Tim from Michigan, Pat from Ft. Liberty, and Marcos from Texas on Israel-Palestine discourse. Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for July 2, 2023 is: prowess • PROW-us • noun Prowess refers to someone's great ability, skill, or talent for something specified, as in “the pop star's vocal prowess” or “a lawyer of great prowess.” // Already a proven virtuoso on guitar, she extends her considerable instrumental prowess to the piano throughout her new album as well. See the entry > Examples: “Asa Phillip Randolph led a successful 10-year campaign starting in 1925 to unionize the all-Black male service staff of the Pullman sleeping cars, which were passenger trains with sleeping accommodations. The union, the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters, was the first Black American labor union to sign a collective bargaining agreement with a major U.S. corporation. Randolph's organizing prowess also led him to plan the March on Washington years before the 1963 march that became historically known.” — Malaika Jabali, Essence, 5 Sept. 2022 Did you know? Prowess is a word with a lot to be proud of. Not only has it performed gallantly for the English language since the 13th century, but it has stayed relatively stalwart in hewing to its original meaning, which is quite a flex. When prowess first joined the ranks of the lexicon, it could be used to refer to bravery, skill, and valor—especially those virtues as encountered in military contexts—or to individual acts of derring-do. The latter was usually used in the plural, as when people waxed rhapsodic about the “prowesses” of knights or some such. Today's “extraordinary ability” meaning, which developed in the 17th century, tends to stick to the singular form, as when it's used to describe those with intellectual prowess, or to someone known for their prowess as a fundraiser.

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Podcast: The Left and Effective Altruism with Habiba Islam, published by Garrison on October 27, 2022 on The Effective Altruism Forum. I recently rebooted my interview podcast, The Most Interesting People I Know (found wherever you find podcasts). I focus on EA and left-wing guests, and have been pretty involved in both communities for the last 5 years. Some example guests: Rutger Bregman, Leah Garcés, Lewis Bollard, Spencer Greenberg, Nathan Robinson, Malaika Jabali, Emily Bazelon, David Shor, and Eric Levitz. I just released a long conversation with Habiba Islam, an 80K career advisor and lefty, about the relationship between EA and the left. This is not an attempt to paper over differences between the two communities, or pretend that EA is more left-wing than it is. Instead, I tried to give an accurate description of both communities, where they are in hidden agreement, where they actually disagree, and what each can learn from the other. Habiba is so sharp and thoughtful throughout the conversation. We're very lucky to have her! I hope this could be a good reference text as well as an onboarding ramp for leftists who might be open to EA. I think there's a real gap in the EA media-verse on the intersection of left-wing politics and EA, and we're almost certainly missing out on some great people and perspectives who would be into EA if they were presented with the right arguments and framing. I have no delusions that all leftists would be into EA if they only understood it better, but I think there are tons of bad-faith criticisms and genuine misunderstandings that we could better address. I think we can have a healthier and more productive relationship with the left. Musician Ariel Pink is dropped by his label for attending a Trump rally. A top executive at Boeing loses his job because of an article he wrote decades ago opposing allowing women to serve as fighter pilots. JK Rowling is widely condemned for tweets her critics deem transphobic. All of the above were subject to social media ‘cancellation' campaigns they experienced as attacks on their free speech rights and personal reputations. For cancel culture's critics, shouting down a speaker in a lecture hall or labelling someone a racist for opposing affirmative action has nothing to do with social justice; it is about the intoxicating feeling of being part of a cultural mob motivated by grievance. To many progressives, so-called ‘defenders of free speech' are crying foul to protect their positions of power in society. It is high time, they argue, that people are held accountable for harmful words and actions including online. Cancel culture is not a threat to free speech, but a champion of it; it gives a voice to those who have been excluded for too long from important public conversations that challenge the power structures benefiting the privileged at the expense of everyone else.  Arguing for the motion is Malaika Jabali, public policy attorney, activist, and Guardian columnist. But if you go anywhere else in the world, it's absurd that you can have an armed vigilante just walking around with an assault rifle willy-nilly in public spaces like this. It's absurd that we have police officers who just take out their guns for mild indiscretions or small furtive movements... [that] they will kill black people specifically for." Guest: Malaika Jabali. Episode 845 | Seriously, where is the opposition against Trump? We need principled opposition to push back against the president of the United States because his actions, his inactions, and his narcissism is going to get hundreds-of-thousands more people killed. And where are the Democrats!?--Joe Biden is about to be pummeled by Donald Trump. This isn't going to play out well once the primaries are over. I don't want to be right. But can anybody explain why I am wrong?--Joe Rogan won't vote for Joe Biden. That's the fault of the Democrats.--A two-part interview with Malaika Jabali of the Guardian. We discuss the pandemic, Joe Biden, and the black misleadership class.--Hillary Clinton makes the very best case for Bernie Sanders NOT dropping out. --Black people are disproportionately dying of the coronavirus. The data is terrifying. And we don't even have the complete picture yet. --Covered in the Blood of Jesus? Okay, sure. I am. But I'm also smart enough not to go to church during the middle of a gd pandemic. Listen to these morons.--Part two of the interview with Malaika Jabali

"Obama Warns Against ‘Purity Tests’ In Democratic Primary," Spectrum News reports. "Spare Me the Purity Racket," Maureen Dowd opines in The New York Times. "'Purity Tests' Divide Democrats," US News & World Report announces. "Political purity tests are for losers," bellows The Hill.   We hear it all the time: progressives, leftists, radicals — and even liberals — are told they must not engage in the siren song of "purity politics." Don’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good, we are told. We must be pragmatic, realistic, we must lay down our ideological arms and stop pining for Nirvana when so much is on the line in November.    Evoking purity politics functions — more often than not — as a catch-all defense against any and all criticism of establishment Democrats. In 2016, Hillary Clinton partisans used it against Bernie Sanders supporters; in 2020, Bloomberg’s flacks use it against Sanders again, and even Sanders partisans use it against leftist skeptics of electoralism. Put simply, purity politics is a Get Out Of Jail Free card, a perennial lesser of two evils narrative of an inherent impossibility of anything other than incremental change. At their core, charges of purity politics are ahistoric and anti-intellectual, pathologizing alternative theories of change that don’t require political compromise as youthful vanity. Indeed, how to balance compromise and ideals has been, for centuries, the central question of the Left, everyone from French revolutionaries to Russian socialists, Black American radicals and Indigenous struggles in North America to Third World liberation movements around the globe have struggled to answer: when do we compromise and when do we not?   But "purity politics" ignores this essential and rich question altogether, brushing aside morally fraught debates about political strategy and reducing anything short of the path of least resistance to unserious solipsism and juvenile stubbornness.
On this episode, we discuss how demands that people drop "purity politics" only go in one direction; how moral urgency has historically been pathologized as youthful narcissism; and how our jaded, broken media elites routinely conflate preemptive defeatism with political savvy.   Our guest is attorney and writer Malaika Jabali.

Malaika Jabali is an attorney, activist, and writer based in New York. She is a contributing writer to Essence Magazine and a frequent contributor to the Guardian. Her work also appears in Current Affairs, Jacobin, the Intercept and elsewhere. Malaika is my first returning guest, and I was very happy to have her back. Since we last spoke, she has written extensively about the 2020 candidates and deepened the reporting that began with her excellent Current Affairs feature The Color of Economic Anxiety. That article won the award for best General Feature from the New York Association of Black Journalists. Last week, Malaika released her first film, Left Out, which challenges many of the assumptions about what working class midwesterners want out of their politics. The 8 minute film is available for free on YouTube and well worth your time. We discuss it as well as:  How economic anxiety can depress voter turnout, the underrated importance of people who voted for Obama but didn't turn out in 2016, assumptions made about midwesterners, the myth of the moderate Democrat, Malaika's advice for 2020 candidates, the lack of diversity in early primary states and how it impacts the nominating process, why black voters don't like Pete Buttigieg, Joe Biden's implosion, Bernie's campaign and rhetoric around race, whether Bernie is a class reductionist, how he could be better at speaking to the intersections of race and class, identity politics as it was originally conceived and how it has been misappropriated, the false choice between emphasizing identity based oppression and solidarity, and the lack of representation in socialist groups like the DSA. Another writer believes that the climate crisis will create the political conditions that will defeat white supremacy. We'll hear his theory, as well. And, political prisoner Mumia Abu Jamal provides a lesson on the roots of the prison abolition movement.  Blacks have been voting overwhelmingly Democratic for more than two generations. For much of that period, the actual Black economic condition has deteriorated, relative to whites. But Joe Biden is running for president as if the past was great for Black people. We spoke with Malaika Jabali, a public policy attorney, writer, and activist, based in Brooklyn, New York. Jabali says the establishment Democrats are working on the wrong assumptions. Scholars have written quite a bit about alliances between Blacks and Native Americans, resisting European conquest and enslavement in the Americas. But Tiffany King, an Assistant Professor of Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at Georgia State University, has written a book that argues that Blacks and Native Americans still pose a threat to what she calls “the conquistador white settler nation.” Tiffany King's book is titled, “The Black Shoals: Offshore Formations of Black and Native Studies.” Climate change threatens to make much of life on Earth extinct, including human life. But educator and journalist Nicholas Powers thinks some good can come out of the mobilization to fight climate change. Powers is author of the book, “The Ground Below Zero: 9/11 to Burning Man, New Orleans to Darfur, Haiti to Occupy Wall Street.” Powers is also an associate professor of English at the State University of New York at Old Westbury. In a recent article for Truthout, Powers surmised that the climate crisis may create the political conditions to finally defeat white supremacy. Mumia Abu Jamal, the nation's best known political prisoner, presents this report on the roots of the current prison abolition movement.

She's written on many topics including police shootings, white nationalism, black radicalism, and hip hop. She has also done excellent reporting on the dramatic declines in black voter turnout in Milwaukee during the 2016 election. Malaika makes a persuasive case that these declines help explain Hillary's loss. The real reasons for this drop are at odds with the narrative advanced by the Clinton campaign and Democratic establishment. They also chart a path forward for 2020. In addition to this reporting, we discuss: How the DNC fails to learn from its mistakes, the corrosive impact of wealth in politics and music, Bernie and race, Bonnaroo, political labels, Black Panther Fred Hampton, why Joe Biden should stick to eating ice cream, and the mysterious deaths of Ferguson protest organizers.
