TOM'S PODCAST #56:  AN EXPERIMENT IN TASTING CHOCOLATEIn today's podcast, I start with one of Chopin's Mazurkas, a dance form that, put to music, recreated his love for his native country, Poland.  Chocolate is my mazurka, as I learned to love chocolate at an early age and now here I am at 54 running my own chocolate store in Southern France and an American non-profit dedicated to making the African cocoa-growing village a chocolate-producing village. In this podcast, I talk about a powerful tool used by the food industry to determine a customer's potential response to a food.  Called a hedonic test, it reveals a customer's preference.  In this case, I have my customers taste two chocolate squares, one made from a Nestlé dark chocolate and the other from the factory in N'Douci, Côte d'Ivoire.  As always, we are looking to help African cocoa farmers become African chocolate makers.  Join the revolution by donating to the cause!1.   Go to www.projecthopeandfairness.org and click on the Donate button.     -OR- 2.  Send a check to: Donations, PH&F, 1298 Warren Road, Cambria, CA 93428. LISTEN:  https://www.buzzsprout.com/1057903/14435370Write to me at tom@projecthopeandfairness.orgTo learn more, visit www.projecthopeandfairness.org

(mg)

The 19th century was an exciting time for classical musicians. Urban centres across Europe and the New World were expanding rapidly, creating a profitable music circuit for touring performers – particularly if you had the talent and star-power to attract audiences in large numbers! A new breed of performer began to emerge: extraordinary virtuosos whose dazzling abilities made them into international sensations. Liszt, Chopin, Clara Schumann and Paganini are among the names best remembered today but there were many others. This week, Donald Macleod explores the life and music of four more 19th century ‘showstoppers' who were equally celebrated in their day, and who also turned their talents to composing.Music Featured: Teresa Carreño: Vals gayo Teresa Carreño: Florence, Cantilène Op.34 Teresa Carreño: Souvenirs de mon pays, Op. 10 Teresa Carreño: Le printemps, Op. 25 Teresa Carreño: String quartet in B minor: I. The festival is a folk celebration which lasts for four days at the end of April, with concerts, dances, singing and instrument workshops, children's activities, even an all-night folk dance party. One of the highlights of the Mazurkas of The World Festival is the folk instrument fair. In this episode, host John Beauchamp meets with two folk instrument makers – Jakub Podskarbi and Edward Reszke – and also with one of the festival's organisers and folk musician Piotr Piszczatowski. We also listen in on one of the groups taking part in the festival, the Wesołe Mazurki children's folk group from Warsaw's Praga district.

DescriptionOver the years 1825–1849, Frédéric Chopin wrote at least 59 Mazurkas for piano, based on the traditional Polish dance. But his unique style differed significantly from the original. Join me, as we take a minute to get the scoop!Fun FactIn 1921, Béla Bartók published an essay in which he said that Chopin "had not known authentic Polish folk music." Bartók suggested that Chopin instead had been influenced by national, and not folk music.About StevenSteven is a Canadian composer living in Toronto. Dessa is a singer, rapper, writer, speaker, science and philosophy connoisseur, podcast host, and ice cream flavor inventor. (Her flavor is Dessa’s Existential Crunch which consists of crème fraîche, brown sugar ice cream, Jameson Irish Whiskey, Disaronno Amaretto Liqueur, and a cashew and praline pecan brittle crunch). Dessa has made a career of bucking genres and defying expectations — her résumé as a musician includes being part of the Doomtree collective, a solo artist with performances at Lollapalooza and Glastonbury, co-composer of pieces for 100-voice choir, performances with the Minnesota Orchestra, and top-200 entries on the Billboard charts. She also contributed to the #1 album The Hamilton Mixtape. As a writer, she published a memoir-in-essays called My Own Devices which was released in 2018 in addition to two literary collections along with many articles in journals such as The New York Times and National Geographic Traveler. And now she is the host of a new podcast that explores “why we do the things we do” called Deeply Human. The podcast is a fun exploration of a number of topics and brings in experts to help explain why we behave the way we do. We wanted to talk to Dessa before we knew about her podcast. Here is part of the e-mail that we sent to her publicist to ask for an interview: “While it may seem a bit off-brand for us to ask for an interview with Dessa, we think that it would be fascinating, and we’d love to talk to her about the intersection of music and emotion.   While we typically interview behavioral science researchers and practitioners, we often interview what we call “accidental behavioral scientists.”  These are people who are applying the aspects of behavioral science to their work without really knowing that they are doing it. Dessa captures a lot of our human experience in her lyrics and discussing that would be a wonderful way of exploring this concept. We would also love to talk to her about her experience with the scientific fMRI research that she talks about in her essay, “Call of your ghost.” Our conversation with Dessa examined a wide range of topics – moving from her podcast, to music’s ability to create synchronicity between people, to how we can’t compare subjective experiences, to how emotional connection comes from dropping veils and getting out of our “practiced mirror face.”  This is an episode that you definitely don’t want to miss. © 2021 Behavioral Grooves   Links Dessa: www.dessawander.com or www.doomtree.com Deeply Human: wherever you get your podcasts from Lute: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lute The Diary of Ann Frank: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Diary_of_a_Young_Girl Alan Alda: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alan_Alda Helen Fisher: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Helen_Fisher_(anthropologist) Barry Schwartz: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barry_Schwartz_(psychologist) Oxytocin: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oxytocin_receptor EEG: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electroencephalography QEEG: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quantitative_electroencephalography Autism: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autism Epilepsy: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epilepsy Penijean Gracefire: https://penijean.com/home Cheryl Olman: http://www.neuroscience.umn.edu/people/cheryl-olman-phd fMRI: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Functional_magnetic_resonance_imaging Neurofeedback: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neurofeedback Harry Haslow – Wire Monkey experiments: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harry_Harlow Research on Emotion and Narrative - https://www.researchgate.net/publication/325962169_Emotion_and_Narrative_Perspectives_in_Autobiographical_Storytelling Drummer Boy (Military): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drummer_(military) “Rock ’n’ Roll but not Sex or Drugs: Music is negatively correlated to depressive symptoms during the COVID-19 pandemic via reward-related mechanisms”: https://tinyurl.com/yw4v5avs Pew Research (2016) The Joy and Urgency of Learning: https://www.pewresearch.org/internet/2016/03/22/the-joy-and-urgency-of-learning/ Common Biases and Heuristics: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1XHpBr0VFcaT8wIUpr-9zMIb79dFMgOVFRxIZRybiftI/edit?usp=sharing    Musical Links Dessa “Fighting Fish”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I9bwKI-fb7k Dessa “The Chaconne” (Kurt’s favorite version of the song with Aby Wolf and Jeremy Messersmith): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F8dt8mY2WiQ London Bulgarian Choir: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2GEDbKe038o Lady Midnight “Bloodsong”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oRb6Uqsvq5w Chopin’s Mazurkas: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H5D46aHhRDM Erik Satie “Gymnopédie No. 1”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TL0xzp4zzBE “Hamilton” soundtrack: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aPSWZUExZ8M “Hamilton Mix Tape”: https://www.amazon.com/Hamilton-Mixtape-Explicit-Various-artists/dp/B01M3XVPL4 Dessa Live - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q5n1lsfZI3A Mayada “Haydn Sonata in D”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NpTfxMmBsLY Chopin “Mazurka Op. 68 n. 2”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VL4_uD0Vp5U Yann Tiersen “La valse d'Amélie”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uj9BihmugmI Tim Houlihan “I Get Lonesome, Too”: http://www.timhoulihan.com/music

Donald Macleod explores the myriad influences on the life’s work of Karol Szymanowski. The reshaping of Europe at the end of the First World War had a defining effect on Polish composer Karol Szymanowski. As Europe was being reapportioned, the comfortable world he’d known up to that point disappeared for good. His family’s comfortable and cultured life disappeared, their assets wiped out by the October Revolution. From that point on, Szymanowski ceased to be a man of some privilege, able to compose in the relative seclusion of his family’s estate in what was then part of Ukraine. He needed to support himself and his mother and sisters but he found himself ill-equipped temperamentally to deal with this dramatic change in his lifestyle. He became increasingly weighed down by illness, quite probably tuberculosis. That, coupled with a chain-smoking habit and struggles with alcoholism, were to take their toll. He died in poverty at the age of just 54 in 1937. Across the week, Donald Macleod explores five distinct influences on Szymanowski’s music, starting with his formative years growing up in a family with a passion for the arts. As a young student, his studies in Warsaw led him towards the language of Richard Strauss and Max Reger, while his love of travel directed him towards impressionism, the ancient world and the Orient. Meeting Stravinsky in Paris and hearing the Ballets Russe was another turning point, as was in his later years in particular, his commitment to establishing a national musical voice for the newly formed country of Poland. Donald Macleod explores “the poet of the piano”, Fryderyk Chopin. Donald starts this week’s episode with a look at how Chopin’s Polish heritage shaped his music. Although he left the country at the age of 20, dance forms like the polonaise and mazurka left a strong mark on his writing. Next, we catch fleeting glimpses of the composer through his letters, and his relationship with his instrument, the piano. Chopin’s reticence to perform made his rare appearances extremely lucrative, but he much preferred the more intimate and sociable surroundings of the salon, where his trademark light touch could be appreciated to the full. We hear about Chopin through the eyes of his most illustrious contemporaries – his lover George Sand, and fellow composers Franz Liszt and Robert Schumann. To end, stories of the composer’s ever-feeble health – Berlioz is supposed to have said Chopin was “dying all his life” – which makes the scale of his achievement all the more heroic. Music featured: ‘Życzenie’ (The maiden’s wish), Op 74 No 1 Piano Concerto No 2 in F minor, Op 21 (3rd mvt, Allegro vivace) 4 Mazurkas, Op 17 Polonaise No 5 in C minor, Op 40 No 2 Polonaise No 6 in A flat, Op 53 (‘Heroic’) Ballade No 4 in F minor, Op 52 2 Mazurkas (Mazurka in G; Mazurka in B flat) Piano Concerto No 1 in E minor, Op 11 (2nd mvt, Romance—Larghetto) Preludes, Op 28 3 Mazurkas, Op 50 (No 1 in G; No 2 in A flat; No 3 in C sharp minor) 2 Nocturnes, Op 55 (No 1 in F minor; No 2 in E flat) Etude in A flat, Op 25 No 1 (‘Aeolian Harp’) ‘Krakowiak’: Grand Concert Rondo in F, Op 14 Mazurka in B minor, Op 33 No 4 Andante spianato, Op 22 No 1 Impromptu No 3 in G flat, Op 51 Nocturne in F sharp minor, Op 48 No 2 Barcarolle, Op 60 Etude in C, Op 10 No 1 Ballade No 2 in F, Op 38 Variations in B flat major on ‘La ci darem la mano’, from Mozart's opera Don Giovanni, Op 2 Scherzo No 4 in E, Op 54 Sonata in G minor for piano and cello, Op 65 (2nd and 3rd movements) Mazurka in G minor, Op 67 No 2 2 Nocturnes, Op 27 (No 1 in C sharp minor, Larghetto; No 2 in D flat, Lento sostento) Scherzo No 3 in C sharp minor, Op 39 Ballade No 3 in A flat, Op 47 Sonata No 3 in B minor, Op 58 (3rd movement, Largo) Waltz in E flat, Op 18 (‘Grande valse brillante’) Berceuse, Op 57 Presented by Donald Macleod Produced by Chris Barstow for BBC Wales For full tracklistings, including artist and recording details, and to listen to the pieces featured in full (for 30 days after broadcast) head to the series page for Fryderyk Chopin https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m00066mv And you can delve into the A-Z of all the composers we’ve featured on Composer of the Week here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/articles/3cjHdZlXwL7W41XGB77X3S0/composers-a-to-z
