Here are excerpts of my favorite pieces from Ludwig van Beethoven (1750-1827). It's hard to think of music that is more passionate, introspective, uplifting, brooding, mournful, and joyous. The sources for the music I use are: Excerpts from the Ninth Symphony/Op. 125 is conducted by Eugen Duvier. Excerpts from the Piano Sonatas (#1 and #2/Op. 2, #8/Op. 13, #13 and #14/Op. 27 #15/Op. 28, #17/Op. 31, #21/Op. 53, #22/Op. 54, #27/Op. 90), and the Fifth Piano Concerto/Op. 73 come from the complete recordings by Claudio Arrau. The excerpt from the Op. 70 “Ghost” Trio, from the Trio Bell'Arte. Excerpts from String Quartet 13/Op. 130 and String Quartet 15/Op. 132 come from the recordings by the Quartteto Italiano.  Excerpts from Missa Solemnis, Op. 123, is conducted by John Eliot Gardiner. You might be thinking, "Why on earth would anyone want to devote an entire podcast to etudes?" For most instrumentalists, etudes are the bane of our existence. They are studies, meant to develop technique on an instrument. Etudes are an essential part of any instrumentalists work, but they had never been known for their musical content. As a violinist, I had practiced dozens of etudes by Kreutzer, Rodé, Dancla, Sevcik, Schraideck, Kayser, Mazas, and more, lamenting the day I chose the violin as my instrument. But pianists have the same dreaded names, like Czerny for example. Chopin changed all of that. Chopin was the first composer to integrate musical content into his etudes, which meant that Chopin's etudes were both extremely difficult technical exercises, but they also were musically interesting enough to be performed live. LIke everything Chopin did on the piano, this was revolutionary, and Chopin's 27 etudes have been part of the piano repertoire ever since. We'll discuss some of these etudes today, along with the nature of virtuosity itself. We'll also spend a lot of time talking about Leopold Godowsky. Leopold Godowsky is not a name you've probably heard very often. But he was one of the great pianists of the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, with legions of admirers including legendary pianists like Josef Hoffman, Arthur Rubinstein, Sergei Rachmaninoff, Claudio Arrau, and the composer Ferrucio Busoni. Godowsky's pianistic gifts were well known, but what about his compositional ones? Well, to speak of one is to speak of the other. During the 1890s, when Godowsky was in his late 20s, he began making arrangements of famous piano works of Chopin and other composers music. Over the next 20 years, he became engrossed with Chopin's legendary etudes, or studies, and began writing his own arrangements of them. Now Chopin's etudes are extremely difficult just on their own, but Godowsky's studies are on another level of difficulty.  In fact, Godowsky's transcriptions are so difficult that many pianists don't even dare to play them, though some, like the great Marc-Andre Hamelin, have made them an integral part of their repertoire. So today on the show, we'll take a look at some of the studies on Chopin's etudes, analyzing both the original Chopin etudes and then the changes that Godowsky makes to them. This will be a show as much about Chopin as it is about Godowsky, because you can't understand Godowsky's achievement without understanding the Chopin first. Join us!

Scientists were able, for the first time, to map the distribution of the 20,000 species of bees that exist in the world. The new global map will help to conserve the insects on which humanity depends for the pollination of plantations. The current mapping of the occurrence of bees in the world may form the basis for future work, allowing scientists to better understand the patterns of bee wealth and ensure that they are effectively conserved in the future. This mapping can inform more accurately about the declining bees and better distinguishing areas less suitable for bees from areas where they should thrive, but have been reduced by threats such as pesticides, loss of natural habitat and overgrazing. Many crops depend on native bee species for pollination. There are more in the northern hemisphere than in the south, as well as in warm regions. There are far fewer species of bees in forests and jungles than in desert environments, because trees tend to provide fewer sources of food for bees than plants and flowers. Some species, such as bees, drones and stingless bees, live in colonies, while others are solitary insects. Although some groups such as drones are well studied, more than 96% of bee species are poorly documented. Many crops, especially in developing countries, depend on native bee species, not honey-producing bees. Leaf-cutting ants have mineral crystal armour, something never seen in insects. The ant of the species Acromyrmex echinatior, which cultivates fungi, has a newly discovered bio-mineral coating that serves as armour. Cutting ants are known for their extraordinary strength: they chew the leaves and carry huge pieces of them, as if they were green flags several times larger than their own size, for long distances to their colonies. A new study shows that a species of leaf-cutting ant from Central America has a natural armour that covers its exoskeleton. This armour-like coating is made of calcite and has high levels of magnesium, a type found only in another biological structure: in the teeth of sea urchins, which are capable of crushing limestone. In leaf-cutting ants, this coating consists of thousands of small plate-shaped crystals that stiffen their exoskeleton. This "armour" prevents insects from losing body members during battles with other ants and prevents fungal infections. Long before the evolution of humans or their last ancestors, some 60 million years ago, leaf-cutting ants invented their own form of agriculture. Only the rural areas of the Pampa biome have, in less than 2% of the national territory, about 2200 species of plants and constitute one of the regions of the world richest in grasses. Coastal and marine ecosystems have areas of high biodiversity, including mangroves, island regions and the only coral reefs in the South Atlantic (Abrolhos). The country is also home to 12% of global water resources and is one of the world's leading food producers. there are still losses in natural ecosystems, biodiversity and ecosystem services due to changes in land use, pollution and urbanization, and about 1200 species of fauna and 2100 of flora are threatened with extinction. Beethoven's Third Symphony in Eb Major, the “Eroica” is one of the most influential works of the 19th century. It marked the beginning of the symphony as a new monumental art form, capable of a seriousness and depth of expression that was previously associated only with epic poetry. As far as Beethoven's personal style is concerned, it also ushered in his “heroic” period of composition, the features of which have come to be accepted as the essence of the composer's unique musical personality. Moreover, these features, which created the music's great power, were in turn taken up as the guiding principles of symphonic writing by many later composers, continuing well into the twentieth century. The Symphony's dynamism owes much to French revolutionary music and above all reflects the inspiration Beethoven drew from the figure of Napoleon Bonaparte, to whom the Symphony was to be dedicated. However, when Napoleon crowned himself Emperor, Beethoven tore out the dedication page in disgust and instead dedicated the Symphony to “the memory of a great man.” This talk will look at the circumstances surrounding the composition of the Symphony and will show how its new musical style expresses many of the ideas and intellectual currents of the revolutionary era in European history. It will then explore the continuing relevance of Beethoven's great achievement in today's world.
