Nimrod Borenstein is a brilliant composer, who was a child prodigy as both a composer and performer. His often complex music is beloved by performers and audiences alike, and has been widely recorded and performed internationally. He is also a renowned conductor, and he spoke to me about his difficult decision to cut short his career as a violin soloist in order to find alternate career options as he developed his career as a composer. Vladimir Ashkenazy has been an active champion of Nimrod's music, and you'll hear the charming story of their first meeting. Ashkenazy first conducted Borenstein's orchestral work The Big Bang and Creation of the Universe op. 52 to great acclaim, and the Chandos label released a very successful album devoted to Borenstein's music conducted by Ashkenazy featuring his Violin Concerto and orchestral works. Nimrod shares his insights about interpreting music for performers and conductors, the development of his compositional style and his views on creativity in general. Nimrod has an infectious energy in his enthusiasm for the pursuit of beauty. Nimrod has exceptional parents, and you'll hear how they met, and we start with Nimrod's close relationship to his father the renowned painter Alec Borenstein. You'll be hearing excerpts from a couple of recordings, with thanks to both SOMM recordings and Naxos; links to Nimrod Borenstein's compositions and recordings below This episode is also a captioned video on YouTube, and you can read the transcript at this link as well: https://www.leahroseman.com/episodes/nimrod-borenstein Nimrod Borenstein website, for his discography, compositions and current projects: https://www.nimrod-borenstein.com/recordings To support this series, please either buy me a coffee or shop at my merchandise store Newsletter sign-up Catalog of Episodes Timestamps: (00:00) Intro (03:27) father Alec Borenstein, sharing ideas about great art and creativity (10:44) Un moment de sérénité Shirim, op. 94, no. 5 performed by pianist Clélia Iruzun with thanks to SOMM recordings (13:24) the importance of contrast (15:06) importance of dynamics, notation, interpretation (18:04) evolution of Nimrod's compositions, decision to give up career as a violin soloist (22:37)Concertos (24:51) piano Etudes (30:11) Tango Etude. op. 66 No. 3 on the Naxos label with pianist Tra Nguyen (32:32) piano Etudes, first symphony (35:24) Chopin performed very little, Nimrod's decision to prioritize composition (36:41)decision to conduct (43:47) excerpt from the 3rd movement of the Borenstein Concerto for Piano and Orchestra op. 91, performed by Clélia Iruzun and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Nimrod Borenstein conductor (47:11) conducting, composition and interpretation (55:35)past episodes you may enjoy, different ways to support this series (56:20) English Chamber Orchestra 2025 collaboration Shakespeare Songs (57:16)how Vladimir Ashkenazy became a champion of Nimrod's compositions (01:06:38) evolution of Nimrod's compositional style, use of polyrhythms, finding his voice (01:24:09) excerpt from the 2nd movement of the Borenstein Concerto for Piano and Orchestra, op. 91, performed by Clélia Iruzun and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, with Nimrod conducting. Welcome to Breaking Through in Cybersecurity Marketing, where we explore the hottest topics in cyber marketing, interview experts and help you become a better cybersecurity marketer! In this episode, Shlomi Ashkenazy, Head of Brand at Cybellum, joins Maria and Gianna to discuss how to maximize your branding potential. To begin, Shlomi defines branding as the core narrative and story your organization wants to tell. This narrative can be uncovered by asking customers key driving questions to determine how their perception grows over time. These questions may include things like How well do you know our company? Who do you see us as? and What do we do? Brand momentum is typically generated from a combination of what you do as a founder and the work of the sales team. Next, Shlomi shares his story of tying brand into a venture capital investment. It all comes down to convincing investors that something big is in store for your idea. Shlomi sees branding as an engineering discipline as if you are building out a product scientifically. It requires less intuition and more customer feedback. Next, Shlomi speaks to how companies can stand out in such a crowded market like cybersecurity. The first thing to do is try to simplify things as much as possible to help people better understand what you do. Then, try to find a niche and really stick with it. He also shares about the efforts he has made which didn't work out as planned. As long as you remain agile and can afford to make mistakes, there is always something to be learned when things don't work out. He also shares his discovery that a CEO is not important for a brand, but rather the CEO is the brand. The best way to know when your company's story is not working is when the sales team is unhappy. If, after trying it out and it still isn't sticking, it's time to change direction. In the first few years of operations, around 30-40% of a brand's budget should go to marketing. Finally, they engage in a fun guessing game to reveal what career Shlomi would pursue outside of the cybersecurity marketing field. Links: Follow Shlomi Ashkenazy on LinkedIn. In our last episode, we learned about the Russian composer Sergei Rachmaninoff. You might recall learning that he composed in the Romantic style of music, and especially featured the piano in his work. Today we're going to take a more in-depth at some of his most famous piano compositions, his collection of preludes. While we won't learn about each and every one of them (he wrote one for each major and minor key!), we'll learn about the collection as a whole and some of the ones that are performed most frequently. Ep #196 - Energy is all around us. Emotions are energy in motion. You know how you have felt blocked, like something inside you is holding you back, or just doesn't feel right. The main problem is that most of us attempt to reconcile this internal charge through our rational thinking mind, or if addiction still steers us, we hit the bottle, straw, or pipe hard. We all know when we feel life is in flow. We know what that feeling of flying on cloud nine is - and no I'm not referencing the high we get off intoxicants. I am talking about that universally known energy we feel inside of us when the restraints are pulled off and we can move ourselves in a way that evokes our divinity and unconscious essence. Imagine if you knew the secrets of unlocking your energetic blocks. Heck, let's all live in a world where we inner-stand that energy isn't just real, it's all around us, Energy IS US, and directs us like a conductor does an orchestra. Let the musical energy of life be your guide. Silence yourself and you will hear your energy calling you. Like in the Avatar movies, there is a light inside us all and it touches everyone and everything. The butterfly effect starts with you. Will you move your body and bring warmth to yourself or will you continue down a path you already know you are sick and tired of being sick and tired of? The answers to these ponderings may just be on the other side of my conversation with Elesia... Just hit play and let's dive in with our open minds, hearts, and energies bringing everyone into the fold - you are in the right place, at the right time...right now. It is time. It has been time. To live is to shine. Step into the SUN. The Death of Transcendence (Palgrave MacMillan, 2022) presents a clear and compelling close reading and interpretation of the five essays included in Jean Améry's At the Mind's limit, describing them as one continuous and progressing argument on the possibility of human society in wake of the Holocaust. Through the works of philosophers such as Wittgenstein, Murdoch, J.M. Bernstein and Charles Taylor, Ashkenazy uncovers the importance and significance of such concepts as transcendence, loss, self, other, love, and home for establishing and maintaining a human life and world, and recovering it should it be lost. Finally, the book examines the concept of resentment, described as a reactive and corrupting emotion by Nietzsche, and follows Améry's argument that in extreme cases, it is in fact the moral, healthy choice. Written with both clarity and academic rigour, The Death of Transcendence offers novel ideas, firmly grounded in existing philosophical literature, and is intended for both professional scholars and enthusiasts. Yoav Ashkenazy is an independent researcher. After receiving a Ph. D. from the Hebrew University in Jerusalem he continued to teach philosophy and literature in various settings and serve as a research fellow at the Hartman Institute for Advanced Study. He currently lives in Vienna and is engaged in research, consultancy and management for various private organizations. Learn more about your ad choices. You've likely heard of virtual reality, but what do you know about augmented reality? Boaz Ashkenazy of Simply Augmented is helping dealers and brokers to showcase their products to customers using the interactive tool of augmented reality, and he's sharing all about it. So what is augmented reality? It is an interactive experience of a real-world environment. Why would this be important to the contract interiors industry? Think of creating entire virtual showrooms. Creating scale models of interiors in which customers can change the layout and materials used in the space. There are so many applications for our industry that would help facilitate a smoother buyer's journey and experience. Seeing is believing, but in the age of 3D product views through AR technology, seeing is also conceptualizing. Simply Augmented CEO Boaz Ashkenazy comes on the show to explain how AR-enabled 3D viewing will revolutionize everything from how we shop, to how we work. Alan: Hey everyone, Alan Smithson here. Today we're speaking with Boaz Ashkenazy from SimplyAugmented. We're going to be talking about how 3D is revolutionizing furniture views and products on the web. All that coming up on the XR for Business podcast. Boaz, welcome to the show, my friend. Boaz: Hey, thank you very much. It's good to be here. Alan: Oh, it's my absolute pleasure. I love the work you guys are doing. Let's get right into it. What is it that SimplyAugmented does, and how is it benefiting your customers now? Boaz: Well, we have a 3D platform that benefits customers both in the sales and marketing teams, and one of our products is called Simply3D. It allows for sales and marketing teams to easily share augmented reality. We found a lot of challenges around sharing augmented reality online and Simply3D.io is a vehicle for helping folks share. And we also create product and room configurators that exist online that allow people to experience environments and products really easily with augmented reality integration. Alan: So I got a chance to try one of the samples. I got to configure a-- it was like a quiet room or almost like a study room for open office furniture. So you go in, you close the door, and make yourself a phone call or whatever, but I got to configure it on the web. I hit a button, and it was in my living room here, this giant pod. And I was like, "Oh wow. This pod is huge in real life." So it was a great understanding of how big these things are, and I think that's truly the power of this technology. Maybe you can speak to some of the specific clients that you've worked with. What are they seeing, results wise? Boaz: You know what's interesting about what you said is a lot of folks have trouble visualizing products at scale, especially with the bigger the product, the harder it is to visualize. I am an architect by training. And I spent years designing spaces, and a lot of times people are surprised about what those designs end up looking like, because it's hard to understand objects at scale. And the pods that you mentioned, they're called Nook pods. And they're large rooms within a room, basically. You can have a quiet room inside an open office, which is pretty typical these days. For two people for four people, for one person. And to see it online and configure it is one thing, but to see it in the environment and walk into is another. One of the things that we recognized was there was two things that people really wanted to do. They wanted to quickly customize any of their products -- We're used to doing it with cars and vehicles, customize your products with colors, with options -- but then immediately be able to drop that in your environment and walk around it, look underneath it, walk inside it. And that's really what our configurator does. One of the challenges that a lot of folks face in the XR space is how do you spin up augmented reality with so many possible variations? That's the hard part about building these configurators. There's so many options, that you would never be able to create the augmented reality content beforehand. You wouldn't be able to predict it. And so what we've done is we've allowed for on-demand, real time augmented reality, depending on the choices that you make. Alan: So once I've configured it -- and I don't know, I didn't actually think about this until now -- but once I've configured -- let's say -- the Nook and I drop it

I had such a great time spending a week with Diego at Andrés Martin’s bass festival this fall. Diego is one of the most inspiring double bassists I know, and he's doing great things for the double bass both in Spain and in his home country of Uruguay. About Diego Zecharies: Diego Zecharies is a highly dedicated professional musician who has mastered his art globally, branching out as recording artist, professor, soloist, principal bass, producer and pedagogue, born in Montevideo Uruguay, nowadays based in Spain. Diego began his studies in his hometown, continues in Jerusalem and graduated with the highest qualification in the ÜdK Berlin (University of Arts Berlin) under the guidance of Prof. Rainer Zepperitz, Prof. Klaus Stoll and violin Prof. Ilan Gronich. During his studies, Diego performed as a principal bass at the Mahler Jugend Orchester, the Junge Deutsche Philharmonie and the Jeunesses Musicales World Orchestra. He won the Friczay Stipendium at Deutsche Symphonie Orchester Berlin and played as a substitute with the Rundfunk Symphonie-Orchester Berlin. Diego served as Principal Bass position in The Mahler Chamber Orchestra, the bandArt Orchestra, Brandenburg Symphoniker, Philharmonie Potsdam, and Sinfonica di Milano. He also is assiduously invited as Principal Bass at the Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana (Lugano, Switzerland); the Ensemble Les-Dissonances (Paris) with violinist David Grimal; collaborated with the the Israel Philharmonic; the Jerusalem Chamber Orchestra and the Luzern Festival Orchestra, recording together with Maestro Abbado many concerts for ARTE and for the Deutsche Grammophone. Zimmerman, Martha Argerich, Alfred Brendel, Maurizio Pollini, Gordan Nikolic and others, always as Principal Bass. Diego is Principal Solo Bass in Galicia Symphony Orchestra from the year 2002. Renowned as a very active and passionate soloist, Diego’s research has brought him to perform some world-premiere material including entire unaccompanied Double Bass recitals, like at the BASS EUROPE Convention in Amsterdam 2014 and ISB World Convention 2015 in Denver (U.S.A) with great appreciation both critics and public. Diego appeared as soloist with: the Chamber Orchestra of Galicia Symphony; the Camerata of the Ministry of Education and Culture of Montevideo; the Galicia Symphony Orchestra; the OJS of Montevideo, the Orquesta de Baja California, among others and gave the opening unaccompanied Double Bass recital for the UNESCO Chair Culture of Peace and Human Rights under the World Peace Forum 2010. Diego has given numerous master classes in Europe, South América and South Korea, been assigned as coach on many youth orchestras across Spain and Germany and has recently been appointed as Director of the International Double Bass Festival of Montevideo and Director of the Double-Bass Cathedra of the Uruguayan National Orchestral Training Plan.

How does it feel constantly walking the tightrope through life? Composer Flint Juventino Beppe talks about how Asperger's syndrome affects his creative output.
In the first episode ever of the FJB Podcast, composer Flint Juventino Beppe talks about the loss of a good friend – a loss that resulted in a composition.
In a new series of One to One, Olivia O'Leary speaks to people who've reached the peak of their careers about how growing older affects their approach to work. In this first programme, Olivia speaks to one of her heroes - the great Russian-Icelandic pianist, Vladimir Ashkenazy. He left the Soviet union in the sixties, and has played a vast repertoire of the greatest piano music on stages all over the world. Ashkenazy is now conductor laureate with the Philharmonia Orchestra in London and Principal Conductor and Artistic Advisor to the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. At 75 he is still jetting around the world to engagements so we were lucky to catch up with him in a hotel at Heathrow as he was leaving after a brief visit to the UK. In a candid discussion, Ashkenazy discussed the arthrosis (not arthritis as has been reported) in his hands which occasionally means his fingers cannot fit between the black keys; he talks about not wanting to become the kind of 'older' conductor, with failing physical capacity, that orchestras respond to purely out of respect. He also talks more widely - about his decision to leave Russia in the 1960s; about the pianists he holds in great respect and about his decision to concentrate on conducting rather than live performance. Producer: Karen Gregor.
Emma Johnson on Brahms, Mark Bebbington on Bliss, plus Vladimir Ashkenazy and Tine Thing Helseth: the Gramophone Podcast, April 2012
In our first podcast of the 2009/10 season we speak to Vladimir Ashkenazy about his career, forthcoming season opening concerts with the Philharmonia Orchestra and future concert plans.
