206 - Meet New People and Build Lasting Friendships In this episode, we explore how to make new friends and build lasting relationships in a world where social connections have become harder to maintain. Inspired by Start With Hello by Shannon Martin, we discuss how small steps can lead to big changes in your social life. Whether you're looking to rebuild connections lost during the pandemic or find new ways to meet people, this episode offers practical advice on how to start. The Power of Hello: How something as simple as greeting your neighbors can create opportunities for connection.Conversation Starters: Turning everyday events like buying a new car into ways to meet new people.Joining Clubs or Hobbies: How participating in group activities or hobbies helps form connections with like-minded people. The Challenge of Social Endurance: Recognizing that not every attempt to make friends will succeed, but persistence is key.The Importance of Vulnerability: Authenticity and openness are crucial in building strong, lasting friendships. Takeaways:Start Small: Meeting new people doesn't require grand gestures—just saying “hello” is often the first step. Be Consistent: Building friendships takes time and requires patience and endurance. Not every interaction will lead to a lasting connection, but some will. Be Genuine: Friendships are built on authenticity, so approach new relationships with openness and curiosity rather than a need to impress. https://startwithsmallsteps.com/206-meet-new-people-and-build-lasting-friendships/ Jill's Links https://abetterlifeinsmallsteps.com https://affiliate.notion.so/NorthwoodsJill https://affiliate.notion.so/NorthwoodsAI https://www.youtube.com/@startwithsmallstepspodcast https://www.buymeacoffee.com/smallstepspod https://twitter.com/schmern Email the podcast at jill@startwithsmallsteps.com

While Rachel is on maternity leave, we're re-running some of our best and most popular episodes of The Bottom-Up Revolution podcast. The episode we're re-running this week is one of Rachel's all-time favorites. It features our amazing colleague Lauren Fisher, although that's not why it's a favorite. Rather, it's because of the candid way Lauren speaks about her life and the choices she has made to build household resilience: raising animals, growing food, mending and crafting things herself rather than buying new, and, perhaps most important of all, developing deep connections with neighbors and family for the good times and the bad. Since we recorded this conversation in the summer of 2021, Lauren and her husband have moved to a new home in the same area which offered them greater opportunities for their little homestead. Her parents also moved in with them into the basement unit of the house and plan to eventually build an accessory dwelling unit for them to live in long term. In addition to the chickens and rabbits she was already raising, they've added sheep. Lauren's also been selling and exchanging things like flowers and eggs with people in her town, and plans to do more of that in the coming months. All of these things are not only a way to provide for the family, but also a way to meet her neighbors. You'll hear more about why that's so important and the role of community in building resilience throughout this conversation. In a nutshell though: if you want to chase a dream (and don't know how), want to make friends (and don't know how), need to communicate better (and don't know how), need blush & lipstick...but all you have is Skittles to make it happen (and don't know how), need to make cookies in a pinch (and don't know how), need to kill a roach (and don't know how), have to deal with a military spouse being deployed (and don't know how), want to stop limited thinking (and don't know how) then THIS EPISODE IS FOR YOU!!!! Sundi also shares 4 things she is currently thankful for! :) "There is one grand lie - that we are limited. The only limits we have are the limits we believe.“ —  Wayne W. Wellness Wednesday Dancers: How To Meet New People In A New City Source: https://lovenotestola.com/how-to-meet-new-people-in-a-new-city-10-easy-ways/ Author: Matilda Veje is a twenty-something professional dancer, originally from Denmark but based in sunny Los Angeles, and she's the writer behind the dance- and lifestyle blog “Love Notes To LA”. Dance brought Matilda to all parts of the world to perform and teach, from China, Copenhagen, Paris, London, Belgium etc. etc. – but somehow she always returned to California. As a foreigner it took 2 years of draining paperwork (and lots of yelling into a pillow) to get an American work visa, but she has now lived in LA for 3 years and is in love with the city and crazy industry she's in. Love Notes To LA is for you if you're a perfectionist, a realists, if you love practical how-to guides and if you walk around with big dreams and lots of passion in your stomach, but don't really know where to start. Come hang out on the blog, and read all about auditions, body image, how-to lists and tips and tricks for moving to Los Angeles! Matilda's philosophy is that there's nothing you can't achieve with an overpriced ice coffee in one hand and confidence in the other, and there's no road you can't travel in sweatpants if you just believe in yourself.
