“I've constantly learned from the people I'm around. … I feel like you learn so much from, not just coaches, but I think from training partners. And I think that in itself is so valuable compared to just training by yourself, following a program. … It might work for some people, but that doesn't work for me. I need to be around other people.” Multi-year CrossFit Games athlete and business owner Lauren Fisher joins the show to share her experience as a professional CrossFit athlete, competing with Annie Thorisdottir and CrossFit Reykjavik, and starting Grown Strong. Fisher grew up playing team sports and did her first CrossFit workout in 2008 after her brothers convinced her to train with a coach at a local gym to help with her basketball training. The intensity, competitiveness with herself and the time cap, and enjoyment left Fisher hooked. By 2012, Fisher qualified for the Northern California Regional — her first — and placed 12th overall. A year later, she competed at the CrossFit Games with team CrossFit Invictus, finishing seventh. Fisher went on to compete at the CrossFit Games six more years — four as an individual and three on a team. On today's episode, Fisher opens up about starting CrossFit and her evolution through the sport. She shares memories and wisdom gained competing and training alongside more experienced athletes as an individual, competing as a team member, and working with experienced coaches and athletes in the space to improve her training. Fisher also gets candid about the demands of having a social media presence and the challenges of balancing expectations from sponsors, growing her brand, and staying connected to her fans and community. Tune in to find out how Fisher and two-time Fittest Woman on Earth Annie Thorisdottir connected about becoming teammates for the 2022 CrossFit Games, how her business Grown Strong is designed to help women grow mentally and physically stronger, and how Fisher is gearing up for the 2023 season. Although she lives in San Diego, Fisher is currently training at Training Think Tank and will compete at the North America West Semifinal as an individual on May 25-28.

While Rachel is on maternity leave, we're re-running some of our best and most popular episodes of The Bottom-Up Revolution podcast. The episode we're re-running this week is one of Rachel's all-time favorites. It features our amazing colleague Lauren Fisher, although that's not why it's a favorite. Rather, it's because of the candid way Lauren speaks about her life and the choices she has made to build household resilience: raising animals, growing food, mending and crafting things herself rather than buying new, and, perhaps most important of all, developing deep connections with neighbors and family for the good times and the bad. Since we recorded this conversation in the summer of 2021, Lauren and her husband have moved to a new home in the same area which offered them greater opportunities for their little homestead. Her parents also moved in with them into the basement unit of the house and plan to eventually build an accessory dwelling unit for them to live in long term. In addition to the chickens and rabbits she was already raising, they've added sheep. Lauren's also been selling and exchanging things like flowers and eggs with people in her town, and plans to do more of that in the coming months. All of these things are not only a way to provide for the family, but also a way to meet her neighbors. You'll hear more about why that's so important and the role of community in building resilience throughout this conversation. Lauren Fisher grew up in Alaska—both in the city and in a very remote, fly-in only region. Today she lives in rural Wisconsin on a burgeoning homestead with her husband. She has a dog, a cat, several rabbits and chickens, and will hopefully have goats or a cow very soon. Lauren is dedicated to building up household resilience, which, for her family, means trying to develop more and more food options that they can raise, grow, forage, and hunt themselves. But she'll also be the first to tell you that these sorts of efforts have to start small. She doesn't own acres and acres of land, but instead, she's found creative ways to practice producing local food and build up her efforts gradually. In addition, she and her husband have cultivated many important skills for self-sufficiency like sewing, building, and electrical work—and they're always seeking to learn more. But for Lauren, these sorts of skills are not just about sustaining her own family, they're also about being part of a larger community. In this conversation on The Bottom-Up Revolution podcast with Rachel Quednau, Lauren talks about how she's gotten to know her neighbors after moving to the area a few years ago, and how they support each other through both the good times and the tough times.   She offers advice for those—yes, even introverts—who want to better connect and make friends with their neighbors. Lauren's focus is on abundance and sharing, on finding the bounty of talent and goodness in yourself and those around you, and strengthening a community with those building blocks.  Additional Show Notes “#DotheMath on Chicken Regulations,” by Lauren Fisher “5 Places to Meet New People to Join the Strong Towns Conversation,” by Lauren Fisher “Creating Housing Opportunities in a Strong Town” - our newest Strong Towns Academy course Sign up for Strong Towns email. Clinical legal education is a type of experience-based learning which mixes the theory and practice of law.  This episode explores the different types of clinical work that students can get involved with and how it can be beneficial to your future career. The ReImagine Law team are joined by Professor Elaine Hall from Northumbria University and Lauren Fisher (a graduate from the Student Law Office at Northumbria University).  They discuss the unique benefits of student law clinics in giving students practical (often client facing) experience within a supporting and supervised environment.  Elaine and Lauren highlight especially how clinical legal education allows students to build skills in client relationship management: gaining experience in how to support clients, often during times of great personal stress, by showing empathy, good listening, and asking good questions.Elaine highlights some interesting research which demonstrates how law students engaging in clinical legal education can simultaneously improve their academic outcomes.   Lauren also outlines how her experiences assisted her in developing skills and confidence, and in applying for roles. We always encourage listeners to undertake practical actions after listening to the episode.  The charity LawWorks have recently published a study into the work of student law clinics around the country.  Read this report and particularly the viewpoints of students who engage in clinics.  If you are not at university or your university does not have a student law clinic you might find opportunities to get involved at Citizens Advice.  Visit their website and see what volunteering opportunities exist in your area to see if you can get involved. Useful resources The Clinical Legal Education Organisation is a charity which supports student law clinics. Their website gives a great overview of clinical work: https://www.cleo-uk.org/.  Have a look at the Law Society page on clinical legal education   The International Journal of Clinical Legal Education is a free online journal.  There are lots of good articles about student law clinics.  You can look through the archives to see if any of the articles interest you.
