Mental Resilience. Andrew Shatte' Chief Science Officer at MeQuilibrium and global authority on resilience discusses methods to proactively manage and constructively respond to the stress and anxiety brough on by career insecurity and job loss
Good leadership can make or break your tenure in a lot of fields, but this is especially true in sales, where a considerable number of people don't have any formal sales background prior to entering the job. A good leader can either set you up for success or leave a bad impression of the industry. So how do you know a good leader when you see one?In this episode of the Peak Performance Selling podcast, Johnny Occean of meQuilibrium talks about his experiences with good leaders, and why it's important to show as humans first, professionals second. HIGHLIGHTSHow do you know a good leader when you see one?Show up as humans first, professionals secondLove of winning vs hate of losingPeople generally don't take time to be at their best QUOTESWhat good leadership looks like, says Johnny: "They're confident. They believe in the organization. They believe in the shared goal that you both have. Your success is their success. When they're tied to your success and genuinely believe in the end goal, I think that's when you're gonna see the best manager." Why you should strive to be at your best as much as you can, says Johnny: "If you're 50%, then the best you can give someone else is 50%. That's not gonna serve anybody. I think of the NBA, for example. The center for the Lakers, Davis, he had a groin energy when they put him out there, I think in like game six. And he got hurt. He wasn't a hundred percent. He gave a hundred percent of 25%. And that got him nowhere, it didn't help the team." Sales is one of the most rewarding jobs in the world, but it can also be mentally taxing. In this third of a four-part episode of the Peak Performance Selling podcast, Johnny Occean, Regional VP of Sales at meQuilibrium talks about mental health in the workplace and what companies can do to ensure a mentally healthy workforce. Johnny also talks about the importance of seeking professional mental help and shares some tips on managing stress and uncertainty in your career. HIGHLIGHTSManagement can do a lot improve employee mental health Avoid WebMD and listen to your parents Don't be afraid to seek professional mental helpIt's okay to not be okay, but work on being better Everyone has bad days; just work harderLows always precede the highs Leaders are measured by their team's performance QUOTESJohnny on how parental advice can help you navigate uncertain times: "I'm 33 years old. My parents went through similar challenges. They went through economic downturns. They went through a lot of big world issues that we, younger folks, haven't gone through. So how do you navigate that? How do you deal with that mentally? I kind of lean on them and hear their stories." Johnny's advice for people experiencing mental health challenges: "I think you just have to start. You have to understand that it's okay to not be okay. But what's not okay is to not do anything about it."How management can impact team performance: "I really think that your employee's performance or your team's performance is a reflection of the person that's managing them. Because a lot of the stress and a lot of the challenges that you might have can trickle down."Connect with Johnny in the link below:LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/john-occean/ If you're listening to the Peak Performance Selling Podcast, please subscribe, share, and send us your feedback.LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/jordanbenjamin/Website - http://mycoreos.com/Podcast - https://www.mycoreos.com/podcastEmail - Jordan@MyCoreOS.comTwitter - https://twitter.com/jbenj09
Virtually anyone can get into sales, but not everyone can make a career out of it. In this second of a four-part episode of the Peak Performance Selling podcast, our host Jordan continues his conversation with Johnny Occean, Regional VP of Sales at meQuilibrium on the common traits that all top performers have. Johnny also talks about going back to why he works hard in sales, and how his immigrant upbringing informs his work ethic as a seller. HIGHLIGHTSWhat the best sellers have in commonAlways think of what your customer cares about Sellers need to be problem solversTop performers are passionate at what they do When all else fails, go back to your why QUOTESJohnny on what makes a successful seller: "It really falls on the individual to do everything they can to immerse themselves in their market and get to know it as best they can because that's how you're gonna bring value to the person you're speaking with, to your customers."Johnny on helping customers first: "All the top performers I've ever worked with are very much so focused on solving problems. If it's your solution, great. If it's not, that's okay too. At least, let them know that and point them in a better direction and help them understand more about their problem."What Johnny learned from his immigrant parents: "I learned a lot about work ethic and what working hard really is. What bouncing back from a lot of different adversity and a different time really is. And I use that as a good reminder to kind of pick it up a bit and keep going when I think I can't really do it anymore." This episode is part of a special three-part series complementing our virtual INSITE conference. Kumar Kymal, Global Head of Compensation, Wellbeing & Benefits, BNY Mellon, and Dr. Andrew Shatté, PhD, Chief Knowledge Officer and Co-Founder, MeQuilibrium, discuss health and wellness, and the importance of personal resilience in maintaining a healthy mind both at work and at home.
In the past year, an invisible virus amped up anxiety and worry and threw workers into months of isolation. On top of that, long simmering tensions exploded into a blaze of social protests across the country, and the presidential election and storming of the U.S. Capitol showed just how divided society has become. The result is a perfect storm of conditions to sap employee mental wellbeing. In this episode of Get Reworked, Andrew Shatté, pyschologist, author and chief knowledge officer at Mequilibrium, shares why companies need to get serious about mental health and start having real conversations about wellbeing at work. The reality is less than a third of employees will come out of this experience stronger and more resilient. "There's absolutely no reason why we shouldn't strive for 100% of those people in our workforce to come out of this stronger if we take steps now and do the right thing," Andrew said. "And I think organizations right now are staring down a choice point and they do not want to be on the wrong side of history here." Highlights of the conversation include: Why we're due for a renegotiation of the social contract between employers and employees. Managers' role in employee mental wellbeing and how to help them identify ways they can help. The seven skills to build a more resilient mindset. How the skills we learn now will help with the continued transformational change ahead. Plus, co-hosts Siobhan Fagan and Mike Prokopeak wonder just how awkward their face-to-face interactions will be as pandemic restrictions ease. Listen in for more. People enduring chronic stress are less likely to eat right, exercise, sleep enough, or do many of the basic things necessary for good health, says Jan Bruce, co-founder of meQuilibrium. The answer, of course, is simple. Find ways to reduce stress, but the path to a less stressful existence isn’t as clear as it might be. Bruce co-founded meQuilibrium to deliver individualized plans for employees designed to help them build “resilience” to stress. Psilos CEO Steve Krupa and Bruce delve into the actual impacts stress is having on health and the economy. Guest Bio: Jan Bruce has devoted much of the last twenty years to pioneering new brands in health, wellness, consumer lifestyle, and holistic medicine. She has a passion for building strong business strategies and cohesive management teams that deliver results. She is widely recognized as an authority on women’s attitudes toward a balanced healthy lifestyle and sustainable living. She also regularly speaks on business turnarounds and LOHAS business issues. In 2004 Bruce sold her company, body+soul/whole living, to Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia and then served as her former firm’s managing director for five years, during which time she led the growth of the business: quadrupling the revenues and tripling the circulation, spawning a multi‐platform franchise that includes website, video on demand, a daily radio show, and a new green cleaning product‐line. She then co-founded meQuilibrium after having a surprising personal epiphany that stress was keeping her from enjoying the rewards of her work.
Like food, your body needs some stress to function optimally. The problem arises is when you have too much of it.We all experience stress, whether it's good or bad.Unfortunately stress is seemingly more present than ever in today's society. As special guest Jan Bruce puts it, "stress is the new fat," in that how it affects your well-being has become of utmost importance. Like food, your body needs some stress to function optimally. The problem arises is when you have too much of it, especially too much of the bad kind.To address this increasingly problematic issue, Jan created meQuilibrium, a "digital resilience platform," which helps both individuals and corporations achieve measurable results in emotional well-being, stress management and performance optimization. “Stress and overwhelm are the new norm, so today’s workforce needs resilience as a front line defense, not strictly when crisis occurs," says Jan. "meQuilibrium delivers high impact, including extremely high engagement, so everyone can experience the power of more resilience and every company can benefit from the promise of a more resilient workforce."When creating meQuilibrium, Jan looked more at the way individuals react to stress, rather than the individual stressors themselves. Listen in as Jan joins Naturally Savvy hosts, Andrea Donsky and Lisa Davis, to share how meQuilibrium works and why it's so essential to manage the stress in your life.
