Last month, 25 year-old sports reporter Haley Jordan was crowned Miss Indiana USA 2023. She will compete in the Miss USA pageant in Reno, Nevada later this fall, which will ultimately feed into the Miss Universe pageant in November.   Haley has been a longtime friend of the Jack Vita Show! She first appeared on the podcast back in early 2021, helping Jack break down the divisional round of the NFL playoffs. The following month, she joined Jack to discuss Super Bowl 55, one day after the big game.   In the time since we last checked in with Haley, her career has taken off as a sports reporter. For two years, she covered Indiana University athletics for Hoosiers Now on Sports Illustrated/FanNation. Since August 2022, Haley has provided color analyst and sideline reporter services to volleyball and men's and women's basketball broadcasts on ESPN+. She currently is the pregame show host and in-game emcee for the Indianapolis Indians Triple-A baseball team, a minor league affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates. She recently accepted a position as a full-time high school teacher, teaching sports broadcasting to students.   In 2017, Haley was named Miss Indiana, and competed in the Miss America pageant. In 2020, she lost her mother to brain cancer. After losing her mom, she thought she'd never compete in another pageant. Through her grief journey, she decided to get back on the saddle, and finished second in the 2022 Miss Indiana USA pageant. A year later, she took the crown.   Haley returns to the Jack Vita Show to discuss her mental health journey, her Miss Indiana USA story, overcoming grief, her Christian faith, her career, and her love for sports and CBS' hit show, Survivor! Find out what adventure Haley wants to embark on next, after completing her time as Miss Indiana USA (and hopefully, Miss USA and Miss Universe)!   You can support Haley on her path to Miss USA and follow her on Instagram (@tvhaleyjordan and @missinusa) and Twitter (@HaleyJordanTV)

Jack welcomes sports reporter, recent Indiana University graduate and Miss Indiana 2017 Haley Jordan (@_haley.jordan on Instagram) to the show. Haley graduated from IU-Bloomington last month and spent her senior season covering the Indiana football team. She's also a diehard Kansas City Chiefs fan, and has a LOT of thoughts on yesterday's 22-17 thriller of a victory over the Cleveland Browns. She and Jack discuss Andy Reid's gusty play-call on fourth and short, the severity of Mahomes' head injury, Chad Henne's run on third and long, a questionable helmet-to-helmet no-call that cost the Browns' six and plenty more from Sunday afternoon's game (0:00 - 26:22). Then they take a look at Sunday night's Buccaneers-Saints game, and the career of Drew Brees after what may have been his final game, a 30-20 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Are the Saints perennial chokers, and just how difficult is it to beat a team three times in the same season (26:22 - 39:30)? The Buffalo Bills are advancing to their first AFC Championship game since 1993 following their victory over the Baltimore Ravens, as Aaron Rodgers has the Packers back in their second-straight NFC Championship game. Haley and Jack recap those games as well (39:30 - 51:12). Lastly, Haley locks in her picks for next week's games, discusses the greatness of Indiana football's 2020 season, assesses Indiana men's basketball's mid-season struggles, and shares a lesson of what God has been teaching her in her life lately (51:12 - 1:03:00).

Miss Indiana USA 2014 and Mrs. Indiana America 2017 Mekayla Diehl Eppers is well known across the country as the beauty queen who graced the Miss USA stage with a "normal body." But what may not be so well known is the difficult childhood that taught Eppers to be the strong woman she is today. In this podcast, Eppers talks not just about the social media outcry, the following appearances on national TV, including GMA, but also how she learned to forgive after being sexually abused by her mother's cocaine dealer as a child. In a podcast that every adult should listen to, Eppers discusses the conversations that she had with her husband prior to getting married, and how he helped her continue her journey as a role model to others and herself.Listen on iTunesLinks:https://www.instagram.com/mrsamerica18https://www.instagram.com/reignfitness_and_pageantryBio:Mekayla has over 16 years in the pageant industry, getting her start in the Miss America Organization and, then, competing in the Miss Universe Organization. In 2014 she was crowned Miss Indiana USA and became a semi-finalist at Miss USA in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. After receiving praise about her "normal body" on social media, she had live interviews on national networks like CNN, Fox and Friends, Good Morning America. This phenomenon sparked her passion to helping others to become truly healthy. As the 2017 Mrs. Indiana America, Mekayla has evolved that passion into her new platform; The Feather Project. Mekayla will compete for Mrs. America in Las Vegas in August and hopes to have the opportunity to spread her native teaching nationwide! When she isn't on the stage, Mekayla spends her time working on her new house with her husband in Bristol, Indiana while working as a real estate broker, fitness coach, and promotional model while volunteering as a Co-Director of the Miss Collegiate North pageant.

As an athlete, and just as a human, you need to take care of your body. - Betsy Opyt   Betsy Opyt is a registered and licensed dietitian with a background in clinical nutrition therapy. She is a certified diabetes educator who has paved her way as a mom, fitness trainer, former gymnast, and the president, CEO, and founder of Betsy’s Best Gourmet Nut and Seed Butters. She is an active daily ambassador for the brand, and its driving force. In 2015 Betsy was named the Florida Young Mother of the Year by the American Mother’s Incorporated Florida chapter, and acts as an ambassador, traveling the state and raising awareness around women’s issues. Betsy was also crowned Miss Indiana in 2000 and spent her reign traveling her home state to inspire and engage children to develop healthier lifestyle habits. She shares with us how a lifetime of observing how nutrition aided her performance and fueled in her a passion for the health of athletes. Betsy has always been an incredible advocate for the connection between fuel and performance. She has excellent recipes and recommendations on her website, along with her delicious line of nut butter - you can find them at https://betsysbest.com!  She recommends complex carbohydrates like oatmeal and fruit smoothies in the morning, snacks at the ready right after practices and games, hydration always, and most of all making eating fun! Betsy emphasizes that working on these skills is all about planning, and encourages parents to involve their athletes in prepping for healthy eating, inviting them to come along to the grocery store, cook together, and think about nutrition as a family. We hope that you share this week’s episode with your athletes, and start to make fueling up right a whole-family effort!
