JULIE WILLIAMS is one of the exciting women of color changing the world of country music. Growing up in Florida, she pursued her music career after getting a doctorate IN Public Policy. She actively performs with the Black Opry Revue and this year Julie was inducted in the CMT Next Women of Country Class of 2023 in January joining Kacey Musgraves and others. MOON KING is an incredible, albeit “unknown,” 20 year old songwriter and musician from the hills of West Virginia. He channels Billy Strings, Stevie Ray Vaugh and Ronnie Van Zant with the southern blues singers of the mountains. WoodSongs Kid: Caleb Morae is a 14-year-old classical pianist from Lexington, KY.

Tonight, we'll read “Nibbles Poppelty-Poppett, The Story of a Mouse” written by Edith B. Davidson and published in 1911. In this story, Nibbles the mouse sets out to seek his fortune. Along the way, he encounters a peculiar inn run by guinea pigs, where he struggles to find food until he meets a sleepy but hospitable Salamander. After a hearty meal, the Salamander shares his love for coziness and poetry with Nibbles. Tonight, we'll read the story titled “The Bunnikins-Bunnies and the Moon King” written by Edith B. Davidson, and published in 1912. In this early science-fiction story geared towards children, the Bunnikin-Bunnies go on a family vacation to the Moon, via the Milky Way. While traveling to the moon was not possible when this book was published in 1912, scientists were diligently laying down groundwork for the future accomplishments. In 1903, a Russian study showed that physical space exploration was theoretically possible using rockets. And by the end of the 1910s, an influential paper from the US discussed reaching extreme altitudes through rocketry. Breeze - "Come Around (feat. Cadence Weapon)" from the 2021 album Only Up on Hand Drawn Dracula. Toronto-based producer Josh Korody has a long list of credits to his name including Dilly Dally, Beliefs, and Nailbiter but his main solo project is the monosyllabically titled Breeze. For his latest album as Breeze, Only Up, Korody recruited pretty much anybody and everybody in the Toronto scene to join him in collaboration to make a record in only eight days. Members of Orville Peck, Tallies, Vallens, Zoon, Sauna, Fake Palms, Rapport, Praises, Civic TV, Moon King, Blonde Elvis, For Jane, Ducks Ltd, TOPS and Broken Social Scene all have their fingers on the frenetically fun album. Our Song of the Day is the record's early single “Come Around.” Energetic and eclectic, the song mashes genres together in a way that makes “Come Around” sound so wrong that it's right. Psychedelic guitar strums meld with hard-hitting tribal beats and post-punk howls that feels caustic on first listen but gets soothing on repeated spins.  Then, just when your brain is starting to comprehend what's happening, Cadence Weapon (the musical pseudonym of rapper/writer Rollie Pemberton) jumps in halfway through for an unexpected verse of nonsensical but clever as hell lines like, “On the web I surf like Brian Wilson.” After a cool 40 seconds, he dips out and we're back to Korody's trippy nightmarish yowls. Korody had his to say about the song: “Come Around” is about someone that has done something horrible and has not shown any accountability or true remorse and the fear they – or have the nerve – to be able to jump back into a community that no longer feels comfortable around them. So, as I'm singing the song I'm picturing performing it live with them walking into the room and making people, especially the people closest to them, extremely uncomfortable and angry. The lyrics: ‘Yeah, you really did a number on this one' references the trauma they imposed upon the community. Kubo is set in a fantasy/folk version of medieval Japan, where we find young Kubo spending his days using his elaborate magical origami constructions to spin beautiful stories of the heroism of his legendary father, the samurai Hanzo, to the people of his village, brought to life from the magic of his shamisen, a three-stringed Japanese lute. His evenings are spent with his melancholy mother hiding in seclusion in a cliff-side cave, who informs him of his own troubled youth after having to escape his murderous grandfather, The Moon King, who took his left eye and wants his other, with help from his supernatural minion daughters, Kubo's Noh-masked witchy aunts. Eventually, their past comes home to find them, causing Kubo to go on a harrowing but heroic adventure, along with his protectors, the motherly mentor, Monkey, and an insectoid amnesiac fighter named Beetle, to fulfill his quest of finding three samurai items imbued by magical properties -- an unbreakable sword, an impenetrable suit of armor, and an invulnerable helmet -- that belonged to his long-lost father.

Toronto's latest hype band Moon King is two best friends: Daniel Benjamin and Maddy Wilde. These two have been making music together for most of their lives. They started Toronto youth-pop band Spiral Beach when they were barely teenagers (along with Daniel's brother Airick who is now the man behind Montreal buzz band Doldrums). I chatted with Daniel on a busy Friday night Robson Street. We talked about everything from surviving a band break up, what it's like working for his brother Airick (as the drummer in Doldrums) and that strange song Daniel wrote about Jupiter having sex with Mercury. You have to listen to our chat! Daniel told me that the Moon King “Only Child” is the track Moon King fans know his band for the most, but do Moon King fans know what (and who) this song is about? You'll have to listen to our chat to find out. Since I talked with Moon King, the band has signed to indie powerhouse Last Gang Records (home to DFA 1979, Purity Ring and Ryan Hemsworth among others) so expect to see BIG things from these two in the near future. Apple Music just launched. I was hoping to host BiH there but it won't work. Too bad. Would anyone be interested in me sharing playlists, albeit unmixed? Personally I like BiH because of the transitions between tracks, and not only for the tracks themselves. I've always sought to enhance the material via their placement in a larger mix. And I still strive for that and still think it is worthwhile. But if you think playlists of raw tracks would also be good (because BiH will never die! 6 years old this September), then comment below. The thing is there are plenty of great songs out there and they don't all make it onto a BiH mix because they don't fit. They are still no less great. So I could do that. If you want. Or even if you don't, I suppose. There are some caveats of course, namely that any song would need to be available on Apple Music. Most of what I include here is either prerelease or self-released, so not available. But sometimes I intentionally avoid big songs even though I love them, so they'd get coverage in a playlist. I'm thrilled to include my friend Nick on this one, who also handles lead vocals for a band I am in called Wild Stallions (absolutely no relation to Bill & Ted). Nick is awesome, in both music and in life,  and I listened to his cover of Miss Ohio about 30 times. You should, too.
