Nick Fabbri and Terysa Vanderloo of Sailing Ruby Rose are the first sailing couple to come on Badass Digital Nomads podcast! After leaving their careers as a dentist and a paramedic in London behind, Nick and Terysa set off to sail the world and never looked back. In this podcast, they share the details of their original plan and what they've learned from three years at sea. They talk about what happens after you've had enough sunsets and rum punches - and how they came to realize that they craved more connection, community, and mentally stimulating work to balance out their lifestyle of complete freedom. They also describe the many cool features of their boats, Ruby Rose and Ruby Rose 2, the highs and lows of living life on the sea, and the lessons they’ve learned while exploring the globe. They also talk about detoxing from social media, practicing mindfulness, and the courage it takes to step outside of your comfort zone, take risks, and learn new skills to support yourself from anywhere. If you’re interested in learning how to fund your travels while living on a boat full-time, you’ll certainly benefit from listening to this conversation with Nick and Terysa. As they say, life is about expressing yourself, sharing your story with the world, and connecting with others along the way! TOPICS DISCUSSED/WHAT YOU’LL LEARN: Why Nick and Terysa were drawn to the sailing lifestyle. How to overcome the lack of knowledge that holds people back from pursuing a nomadic lifestyle of full-time travel. The benefits and challenges of living on a sailboat. How society keeps us tethered to a certain work/life structure and what it takes to break free from the shackles of society. The defining characteristics it takes to step outside of your comfort zone and take risks. How to cope with experiencing feelings of anxiety, depression, and loneliness - even when you’re living a freedom lifestyle. The importance of staying in a country long enough to establish a community or friend circle and learn the local culture. What to do after the initial excitement of travel wears off. How they learned how to make YouTube videos and how they come up with ideas for content. Their candid thoughts on quality vs. quantity when it comes to content creation. Why they transitioned from a monohull to a catamaran. Where they’ve sailed so far and where they plan to travel next. Which countries have the cheapest mobile internet. The near-death experience Kristin had on a boat in the Gulf of Mexico. QUESTIONS ANSWERED: Why did you decide to quit your jobs to travel? How do you deal with being far away from friends and family? How did you learn your creative skills, like writing and making videos? How do you support yourselves financially? How do you find fast enough WiFi to work remotely from a boat? What advice would you give your past selves ten years ago? And much more! Kevin and I were thrilled when Kristen Young, Executive Director of Leadershape, accepted our interview request. In doing so, she took a big leap of faith. She exemplifies someone who is willing to take a risk and open herself up to new experiences, something Kevin and I deeply value. Kristen believes in the mission of Leadershape, "To transform the world by increasing the number of people who lead with integrity and a healthy disregard for the impossible." The last 16+ years of Kristen's life have been dedicated to helping others see their own innate greatness and become agents for positive change. Two of those people were Kevin and I when we attended Leadershape's flagship program, The Leadershape Institute. Our conversation with Kristen clarified how the values and ideas planted in us at Leadershape have continued to guide us. A lot of pieces fell together for Kevin and I, and a lot of questions were answered as to where we got this desire to align our lives with our passions and values. We hope this conversation inspires you to ask some questions about your own purpose and passions. The IBM Blockchain Pulse has had the privilege of hosting several returning guests this season but few have worked in industries as heavily impacted by COVID-19 as our guests today; Matt Zarracina and Ken Lesnik, the founders of True Tickets. While the live events business has been upended during the pandemic, True Tickets mission has remained totally unchanged. Their work to push clients and customers further into the realm of digital ticketing has never been more relevant. In their last episode together a year and a half ago, Matt and Ken shared how they transitioned from a B2C company to a B2B company. In this episode, in the midst of the COVID-era, they focus on how all the ways in which their own business has adapted and evolved — and, of course, how the larger blockchain business ecosystem has adapted and evolved as well. Don’t miss out on this thoughtful and illuminating conversation! Key Takeaways: [:00] An excerpt from today’s episode. [:44] About today’s episode with Matt Zarracina and Ken Lesnik. [2:08] Matt welcomes Matt and Ken to the podcast. [2:59] How True Tickets has adapted accordingly to live events taking a massive hit due to the global pandemic. They also share about the exact moment in the spring that they realized that they needed to think quickly and adapt. [7:09] What is a ‘test’ and what is a ‘sign’ when it comes to your business? How do Matt and Ken define the difference? [9:18] Ken elaborates on the role that blockchain is playing in helping to create more equitable and fair digital mobile ticketing. [12:34] The biggest change agent for the live ticketing industry during this COVID era that allowed the ‘middlemen’ to recognize True Tickets as a business solution in a different way. [14:18] Why wasn’t there earlier incentivization for making tickets digital? [15:44] How does True Tickets walk venue owners, managers, promoters, etc. through the concept of working with data and predictive digital analytics? [18:08] Would Matt and Ken see a part of True Tickets’ responsibility as playing a key role in translating digital possibility for analog ownership, analog venue management, etc. as we move into this new digital age? [19:45] Matt highlights the differences and similarities they’ve seen in the COVID era between the different territories and markets they’re operating in. [20:45] As they’re closing deals, do they find clients care particularly about the blockchain angle as it pertains to security, trust, and transparency? Or is it just a nice addition? And how does the blockchain story come about in the story of their business solution? [22:05] Matt speaks about the nature of True Tickets’ relationship with IBM Blockchain at present and what excites him most about it looking into 2021. [24:14] Matt speaks about the significance of what happened when Hamilton premiered on Disney+ this summer and what it means for the future of live performances. [27:20] Why haven’t there been many live performances in digital form? Is it only becoming more prevalent due to the pandemic? [29:03] Ken shares his thoughts on how live performances have transformed since the pandemic. [32:00] How they’re planning for the evolution of their business, what they think the ticketing space will look like in the two years, and how they think the relationship they’ve built with IBM Blockchain will impact their business going forward. [34:34] Matt thanks Mat and Ken for joining the podcast once again! [35:32] Matt closes out the podcast. Women were previously banned from working in the oil and gas and maritime industries in Lebanon. Now there are new laws and opportunities and a professor is leading the way to bridge the gender gap. At Notre Dame University-Louaize (NDU), Lebanon’s preeminent non-profit Catholic institution of higher education and the sole Catholic Lebanese university that adopts the American model of liberal arts education, Professor Eugene Sensenig, Ph.D is passionate about empowering his students for equality. Through lessons and interactive webinars, Professor Sensenig has introduced his students to the possibilities of working in extraction industries, including offshore oil and gas. Recently, he shared the story of Rosie the Driller on Women Offshore to his students. Many of the female students were intrigued by Rosie as a role model, especially since the antiquated Lebanese Code of Labor banned women from the sector until recently. In 2018, the Petroleum Transparency Act changed women's opportunity in Lebanon, guaranteeing equal opportunities and diversity in the workplace. Today on the Women Offshore Podcast, hear from Professor Sensenig. He believes in promoting STEM in schools and universities to prepare girls and young women for future openings later in the decade. As a mom of three, Lynne Jackson struggled to maintain the order and perfection she expected to have in her life. Conflicts with her oldest son especially left her feeling defeated, angry and fearful of the future. “The Lord was speaking to me one day about some of these beliefs that I had. And in Ephesians 4:15, it talks about speaking the truth in love. And I felt like I heard his voice say, you are not speaking the truth in love to yourself, about you and your kids. And then I went on a journey to figure out what was really true.” Lynne shares how she learned to fight back against the toxic lies she believed about herself and her kids with God’s truth. We talk about practical ways we can take time to process our feelings with God and with others so we can let go of expectations that hurt our families and can find freedom in our identity in Christ. “The goal to have perfect kids and be a perfect mom is just a setup for anger and despair. And it's actually idolatry. The real truth that helps us let go of that chronic anger is it's my job to parent wisely. My kid's job is to learn over time, to respond wisely. Pretty much every week, we get an email from a new cannabis startup, promoting their latest CBD or THC remedy to treat any number of health conditions, including sleep problems. This boom in new, legal cannabis products is the result of recent legislation to start the process of widespread marijuana decriminalisation, and eventually full legalisation. But whilst the consumer demand is fuelling massive growth in the global cannabis industry, currently, there's little, verging on zero clinical evidence to firmly substantiate many of the health claims made by the new wave of cannabis products hitting the market. So in this episode, we go behind the marketing claims, and look at the real, solid, scientific evidence behind medical cannabis and its efficacy in treating insomnia and a whole host of other sleep disorders including sleep apnea, restless legs syndrome, and even narcolepsy. This episode's guest: Anastasia Suraev is a clinical research officer at the Lambert Initiative for Cannabinoid Therapeutics, a philanthropically-funded centre for cannabinoid research at the University of Sydney. She is also a PhD candidate at the Woolcock Institute of Medical Research where she is leading a clinical trial assessing the effects of a cannabis-based therapy on sleep in people with chronic insomnia. On one hand, doctors and therapists remind their patients to banish every gadget and gizmo from the bedroom, lest they act as addictive, irresistible slumber-stealing distractions. On the other side however, there's a fast growing cohort of innovators, entrepreneurs, researchers, and sleep practitioners who recognise the unbounded potential of technology to improve, rather than detract from our sleep. In this episode we talk to Julian Jagtenberg, co-founder of Somnox, a company at the vanguard of the vibrant, innovative 21st century consumer sleep technology industry. We talk to Julian about the world's first sleep robot, and how the new 'sleep economy' may offer exciting new pathways and opportunities to help people overcome sleep issues, without resorting to pills, or potions. This episode's guest: Julian Jagtenberg is Chief Marketing Officer and co-founder of Somnox, the world’s first sleep robot. Created to fight insomnia, help the sleep deprived and start a global sleep revolution, Somnox was borne from Julian’s desire to help his mother manage and overcome insomnia without the need for prescription medication. He graduated with honors from the Delft University of Technology with a degree in Industrial Design, and also holds a minor in Robotics from the Delft Biorobotics Lab As an industrial design engineer, Julian is on a mission to develop soft robotics to contribute to health and well-being. With multiple design and engineering awards, including the James Dyson Award, Philips Innovation Award, Robotdalen Innovation Award and Sprout’s 25 under 25, Julian passionately believes in the ability of robotics to help humans live happier and healthier lives. With the unemployment rate over 95% in the entertainment industry1, it’s common to have had the following thought in the last several weeks: "If my entire livelihood depends on other people’s ideas and projects, maybe my livelihood shouldn't depend on other people’s projects anymore?" This has become a very common thought amidst the pandemic. Here’s what a member of our community had to say in Episode 97: "Ultimately I love what I do. But I'd also love a lot more flexibility. I feel like you always have to say yes to a job, and I'd love to have the flexibility to turn the job down unless it's something that I'm really interested in." In today’s Community Q&A I invited special guest, TV editor Monica Daniel, to speak very candidly about her desire to find alternate ways to generate income besides editing television. As a single mother with a special needs child her time is limited to build her own empire, yet Monica has tremendous knowledge and value to share with the world. Is it possible for her to monetize her knowledge and build a business that can generate additional income aside from her regular career? And more importantly can she overcome the psychological fears, the imposter syndrome, and the many limiting beliefs that are most likely the only thing stopping her from taking the next steps towards financial freedom? A quick update from our favorite "hot seat contestant", Debby Germino on her progress. (HINT: She's been taking massive action.) The Big Question: "How can I provide value that people are happy to pay for in ways I may not have thought about before now that I’m under quarantine?" How editor, Krysia Szyszlo is leveraging her Psychology degree and personal interests into a side hustle as a dating and relationship coach. She even has clients already! Listen as Zack puts Monica Daniel in the "hot seat" for a live laser coaching session. He helps reveal astonishing insights into what's holding her back from monetizing her valuable knowledge, experience, & assets (such as her online following who hang on her every word). Monica's compelling reason WHY she's pursuing a more flexible & independent way of earning income. The story of Monica's "Internet celebrity" status (wink) and how a random Facebook post inspired her to create a workshop on Assistant Editing in Scripted Television for BCPC that sold out in 40 minutes! The "magic question" she asked people which made her realize that she has a unique voice, perspective and relatability that appeals to aspiring assistant editors in a way that sets her apart from mentors with prestigious credentials. Why Monica believes the old adage "you have to pay your dues" is B.S. which can discourage talented creatives. And why her thinking about how to approach a career gives people the hope and reassurance they need to succeed. A transformative coaching experience happens in real time: Don't miss the powerful, paradigm shifting questions Zack asks which affirmed Monica's value and breaks down her limiting belief around monetizing the knowledge she shares. How giving some stuff away for free turns out to be a great way to attract people willing to pay you. (When you do it right.) Why it's actually good for people when they have to pay for your services as a mentor, coach, or trainer. HINT: How much more committed are you to following through with a training program when you've invested your hard-earned money into it versus when it's free? 2 industry examples of people who monetized their knowledge in totally non-exploitative ways: Lori Jane Coleman who wrote the ‘bible’ for working as an assistant editor Norman Holland who traveled the world getting paid to teach “Who am I to charge people for this?” - How to overcome 'imposter syndrome' and the emotional drivers that cause it. Key mindset: “Don’t pursue perfect at the expense of good enough.” Zack’s biggest transformation after 6+ years of doing this: The first time somebody gave him $97 Huge takeaway: “It’s not even about making money, it’s about teaching myself that I’m worthy of the value I’m asking from others.” The group goes into more questions such as: “What if I don’t know where to start? How do I even find an idea?” “What are the things I already enjoy where I feel like I can provide value?” “What if I’m not an expert?” Useful Resources Mentioned: Previous Q&A - Ep97: When Are We Going Back to Work? This week we explore 'pandemic dreaming' - a phenomenon where people around the world, experiencing lockdown during the coronavirus pandemic, have reported an uptick in incidences of dreaming and more vivid dreams. We talk to two academics who, for several years have been undertaking an art/science project, DreamsID in which individuals recall a dream, which is then transformed in real time to a work of art. We talk about some of the reasons behind 'Covid dreams', art, symbolism and metaphors, an overview of contemporary theories of dreams' functions, and explore new theories of how the act of sharing dreams may strengthen social bonds by increasing feelings of empathy. Since the coronavirus global pandemic began there have been countless news stories that range anywhere from “It’s just the flu” to “They’re creating mass grave burial sites.” As we sit quarantined inside our homes watching the world unravel from our screens… What the hell are we supposed to believe? What can we do to feel in control in a world spinning so rapidly out of control? In this interview I have a very candid and honest conversation about what the coronavirus pandemic looks like on the frontlines from the perspective of one physician – Dr. Edison de Mello, the founder of the Akasha Center for Integrative Medicine (and yes, he is a “REAL Doctor”). This story is not THE perspective on current events, this is his perspective. And it’s an extremely educated and unbiased perspective of how to better understand what’s happening in different parts of the world, how we can prepare ourselves and strengthen our immune systems naturally, what the timeline really looks like before we go back to “normal,” and how testing factors into the equation as well. I can honestly say that after conducting this interview I feel more optimistic and less anxious about this whole situation since it all began. And I hope this interview has the same effect on you as well. In recent years we've been bombarded with advice warning of the dangers of sleep-stealing blue light emitted from smartphones, tablets and computer screens. But scientists and health experts are slowly coming to realise that the melatonin-blocking function of short-wavelength light is only part of the story regarding the reasons why technology keeps us awake at night.
