Adoption is often framed by happy narratives, but the reality is that many adoptees struggle with unaddressed trauma and issues of identity and belonging. Adoptees often spend the majority of their youth without the language to explore the grief related to adoption or the permission to legitimize their conflicting emotions. Today, Gem is speaking with counselor and author Cameron Lee Small about his new book, The Adoptee's Journey. You might be wondering what adoption has to do with spiritual leadership. Well, here at UL, we care very much about people and their stories. And this story is very personal to me in that I am an adoptee. Gem is also sharing her own journey as an adoptee and giving you real time insight into my current personal process. She shares things that she's never spoken in a public setting. Inspiration comes from many different experiences. My guest on PVDcast #436 has many inspirations that motivated him to create one cool comic. Cameron Lee is that guest and he produced a comic called GodPunk. Cam describes his comic as a mix between Power Rangers, Indiana Jones, archaeology & mythology. Besides Cam's inspiration, we will discuss the current Kickstarter (see below), Cam's podcasting career and I even get a brief history lesson about Cam's hometown of Kansas City, Missouri. Have you ever felt like a ministry refugee? Like your spiritual home became uninhabitable and you were forced to flee? Today we interview Dr. Cameron Lee, a professor at Fuller Theological Seminary, who uses the image of “ministry refugee” to name the experience of so many who have lost their spiritual homes and are left feeling war-torn, traumatized, and lost. Dr. Lee uses his background as a marriage and family therapist to look at the church through the lens of a family system. Through this lens he helps us examine the systems that created the toxicity and abuse that creates so many refugees. He teaches us how to offer grace and hospitality to those who have lost their homes, how to create safe spaces, and hope for healing the system.
On this episode, I'm sitting down with Cameron Lee Small who is a licensed clinical counselor, national trainer, and adoptee advocate. As an adoptive parent myself, this topic is very near and dear to my heart, so I am so thrilled to have Cameron share his invaluable insights. Cameron's personal journey as an international adoptee from Korea informs his impactful work today. Through his private practice, Therapy Redeemed, as well as his upcoming book, The Adoptee's Journey: From Loss and Trauma to Healing and Empowerment, Cameron addresses the intersection of adoption, mental health, and social justice. Throughout our discussion, Cameron and I explore the complexities of adoption, from the need for safe spaces for transracial adoptees to the importance of normalizing conversations about therapy and mental health support. Cameron's dedication to elevating adoptee voices shines through as he shares his experiences and offers guidance for supporting children and families who are in the world of adoption. We also discuss the challenges that adoptees often face in finding their voices and identities, the significance of acknowledging their experiences, and the incredibly important role of caregivers and professionals in creating nurturing environments. Cameron's insights into supporting children in their journey towards permanency and self-discovery offer valuable guidance for anyone involved in the adoption process. From his own journey of self-discovery to his advocacy work today, Cameron embodies the essence of being "by their side." His commitment to supporting adoptees and fostering understanding and empathy within the adoption community is truly inspiring, and I am so appreciative toward his willingness to share his personal story on the show! This week, Features Director Jessi D speaks with Cameron Lee, who performs as Eel Romance, about his debut album, Funny Blue, his struggle with and commitment to creating his perfect first album, being inspired to finish his album by recording and distributing his own cassette tapes using a recorder from a 90s cereal promotion, and how his own audio diaries formed his sampling process. "I was just going to share it with some friends, and mainly it was just a personal milestone where I wanted to finish something. [...] I've always had trouble saying that something is finished and committing it and saying this is what I wanted to do, I am proud of this. This represents a piece of me. But this one happened to work, and that took a lot of work to do. [...] This is great surprise, and it's very exciting for me. Because I've always wanted to talk about this, I've always wanted to do this." - Cameron Lee Produced by Jessi D. Photo Credit: Nat Werth

Although we're currently blessed with an abundance of water in Northeast Ohio, what will the future hold, as the planet continues to heat up and dry out? This question took on some real urgency this week, as water rationing began in Los Angeles, and the White House came out with a new action plan to address global water security, and to build drought resilience. We asked an Applied Climatology expert, Dr. Cameron Lee, who is an Assistant Professor of Geography at Kent State University, about whether our proximity to one of the largest sources of fresh water in the world; the Great Lakes, will keep us insulated from water shortages that are expected to affect more than half of the world's population within the next ten years. We'll also hear from CBS News Correspondent, Steve Futterman, and Vice President, Kamala Harris. Listen now.

Are you struggling with news overload Information about topics like COVID, politics, and war flood our feeds and inboxes, but not everything that is being communicated to us is the truth. That is why being able to think for ourselves is such a critical skill. So, how can we get better at detecting “BS”? On this episode of Dentist Brain Candy, I cover two thought-provoking articles from the February 2022 edition of the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. The first one by Jeffrey C. Posnick, DMD, MD looks at what is needed to separate fact from fiction in this age of information overload. I think you will find this article both timely and helpful. I also discuss an article by Cameron Lee et al. that shares the findings from a study on the relationship between serum albumin and adverse outcomes in patients undergoing operative repair of maxillofacial fractures. I also continue our discussion of the book, Limitless by Jim Kwik. Today I'm discussing Chapter 6: “The 7 Lies of Learning.” In this chapter, Kwik talks about what makes up intelligence and how the idea of fixed intelligence is a lie. Listen for more. This week, President Biden pledged the US will take action to reduce fossil fuel emissions, in an effort to protect the forests worldwide which in turn; can help protect us from the harmful effects of climate change. Episode 045 - Let's Normalize Being Wrong (With Matt Tebbe) I grew up in a faith tradition where being right was essential. It's what kept us in community. It's what we thought honored God. For many other reasons--temperament, trauma, and even privilege--being right became an identity issue for me. Then I heard Matt Tebbe suggest that we need to normalize being wrong. For some of us this is the medicine we need. Show Notes "Let's normalize being wrong. Transcription Marc Schelske 0:00 Did you know you don't have to correct other people? Did you know you can be wrong, and the world won't end? Hey, friends, I'm Marc Alen Schelske. This is the apprenticeship way, a podcast about spiritual growth following the way of Jesus. This is Episode 45. Let's normalize being wrong. TODAY'S SPONSOR Now, before we jump into that conversation, I'd like to tell you that today's podcast is made possible by The Writers Advance. I'm a writer, I write this podcast. I write blog posts. I write sermons, I've written three books. I've got two manuscripts in the oven right now. I think I've written something close to a million words at this point. And all of that writing, I have learned that there really is only one significant obstacle to writing just one. Life. Life and all its business, obligations, responsibilities, chores, people who need you to do stuff right now. And all that stuff, it takes time. And even when you sit down to write and try to focus at all intrudes into the space into your emotions. So, one of the disciplines that I have learned over the years of writing is that periodically, I need to get out of my life in order to focus. Not an out-of-body experience, I just need to get off the grid, I need to be out of the reach of my schedule and phone, I need to retreat so that I can advance my writing. That's why I created the writer's advance. This is a very unique event for writers.
Kurt Fredrickson and Cameron Lee are on the faculty at Fuller Theological Seminary. In this episode, our conversation centers on the theme of resilience and the willingness to adapt. What does it mean to be resilient? And how do we become resilient leaders who are not only able but willing to adapt when called to do so?THIS EPISODE'S HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDE:Kurt Fredrickson leads the Doctor of Ministry and the Doctor of Global Leadership programs at Fuller Theological Seminary.Cameron Lee is the Professor of Marriage and Family Studies at Fuller Theological Seminary. For Cameron, it’s painful to see how the coronavirus has divided the church this past year.Kurt Fredrickson noticed that when you have to adapt, you adapt. And the church adapted.Visiting various online church services is not really church. The missing component is community.Kurt Fredrickson's biggest fear is that we’re just going to go back to church as it used to be—over-programmed and under-discipled.A crisis like this pandemic exposes the things that we tend to take for granted. To lead after Covid, leaders need to cultivate resilience, gratitude, and the ability to hold things loosely.Ministry leaders need to practice Sabbath. But it can be hard to practice Sabbath when one day bleeds into the next (as it seemed during the pandemic).Kurt Fredrickson defines resilience in terms of its opposite—the inability to snap back or be flexible.Cameron Lee connects resilience to the ability to manage stress.Cameron Lee shares how Covid has personally affected him, including the loss of his mother. To find out more about Kurt Fredrickson’s work, visit his Fuller Seminary profile page. You can find out more about Cameron Lee’s work by visiting his Fuller Seminary profile page or his blog, Squinting Through Fog.RELEVANT RESOURCES AND LINKS:Books mentioned:Tempered Resilience, by Tod BolsingerThat Their Work Will Be a Joy, by Kurt Fredrickson and Cameron LeeSurfing the Edge of Chaos, by Richard Pascale, Mark Milleman, and Linda GiojaKurt Fredrickson:Fuller Seminary profile pageCameron Lee:Fuller Seminary profile pageSquinting Through Fog blogRelated episodesEpisode 72: The Edge of Chaos, Part 1: Why Your Church Needs DisequilibriumEpisode 73: The Edge of Chaos, Part 2: Fresh New SolutionsEpisode 74: The Edge of Chaos, Part 3: Slowly, Then All of a Sudden— Links to Amazon are affiliate links.Support the show (http://patreon.com/markuswatson)

Craig is engaged full time in the understanding of the technology used in hybrid and electric cars. His 45 years of automotive experience serves him well. He travels throughout the world doing training on Hybrid and Electric Vehicles. Previous Episodes https://remarkableresults.biz/?s=%22van+batenburg%22 (HERE). Cameron Lee-Ernie Lee's Service Center was founded in 1972 by Cameron’s grandfather. His father and Cameron now currently operate the business as a team. He went to work in the family business right out of college and started as a Tire and GS Tech and moved my way up to being the Lead Technician. Cameron serves as the Shop Manager and focuses on the day-to-day operation of the shop, developing the business, and meeting the needs of the ever-evolving aftermarket repair industry. Early in 2020 after attending Up Your Voltage by ACDC, Cameron opened another division of Ernie Lee's known as Raleigh Hybrids due to the ever-growing demand of Hybrid and EV repair and maintenance. In many ways, his role is modernizing and expanding the family business and the development of Raleigh Hybrids was a natural progression of that. Eric Carlson has been a technician for over 40 years. His formal automotive education came from Ferris State University where he took all 8 ASE tests prior to graduation in 1977. Eric has re-certified every 5 years since. He took the L1 when it was introduced and is now L3 hybrid certified. Full disclosure: Eric is a subject matter expert for ASE and has participated in writing test questions, in the past 2 years, for the L3 test. Eric and his wife Jamie bought Ervine’s in 1994 and added Grand Rapids Hybrid to the family in 2013 after Eric became the first Master Hybrid Service Technician in Grand Rapids, MI. Eric has been interviewed by several local television stations and publications seeking his expertise on everything from basic maintenance to the ramifications of “Right to Repair” legislation. Ervine’s Auto Repair and Grand Rapids Hybrid became an ASE Blue Seal of Excellence shop when it was introduced and have been since. Cameron Lee Price is an actor making leaps and bounds! With a recent national commercial spot, Cameron takes us through his experiences juggling multiple agents, self-taped auditions, a few relocations to find the work, and what he worked through as a film producer. Cameron also stared in the latest, Little Grey Cat film, Ignorant Creatures. Zoe and Claire had a bit of fun this episode with someone they've worked with quite extensively in the past! You can hear in their voices how much Cameron brings to the table and it was an absolute treat to have him a part of Muse Unseen.

In their lectures delivered at the 2015 Fuller Forum, Walter Brueggemann, renowned author and Old Testament scholar, presented the law of Yahweh not as static and totalizing but as an ongoing conversation between God and God’s people; Cameron Lee, professor of marriage and family studies, explained how neighborliness has developmental roots in early family relationships, and how this has implications for the ministry and life of the church; and Michael McBride, pastor of The Way Christian Center, talked about the role the church has to advocate for and participate in movements of racial justice, particularly by redeeming broken systems. The 2015 Fuller Forum explored the themes of justice, grace, and law and how each shapes our understanding of the church’s relationship with God and the church’s ministry in the world. Joined by Fuller scholars and other guests, renowned Old Testament scholar Walter Brueggemann, featured as the conference’s keynote speaker. Author of over a hundred books, he is the William Marcellus McPheeters Professor Emeritus of Old Testament at Columbia Theological Seminary.

Cameron Lee Small, 39, originally named He Seong Lee, was adopted from Korea at the age of two by white parents and grew up in a small town in Wisconsin. But he was never interested in knowing more about his native country or exploring his own feelings about being transracially adopted. But that changed in his 20s. Today, Small is a licensed therapist who specializes in helping transracially adopted adults and children, their parents and families, to grow in their journey and to acknowledge the complexities inherent in transracial and transnational adoption.

Cameron Lee Small, trans-racially adopted from Korea, is a licensed clinical counselor. He is the face behind Therapy Redeemed and provides all his services online. Cam and I talk about his personal experience with adoption, his relationship with his adoptive mom and where that attachment began. Cam is open about his struggle with loss of his birth culture and how his faith has empowered him to hope. My favorite part about our conversation is the empowerment and grace Cam offers to adoptive parents to be authentic in their connection to their adopted child. He emphasizes that there are no checklists to what to say as a one size fits all but parents can recognize the values and characteristics of their own families to figure out what is best. He makes a strong case for destigmatizing counseling. His online resources provide honest feedback, engagement, and support for adoptees and adoptive parents.
