Did you know that Bhopal has a rich history, and a role to play in the cloak-and-dagger drama that preceded Independence? Before it came to be the capital of Madhya Pradesh, Bhopal was the second-largest Islamic princely state in British India. In fact, Bhopal State had a long lineage of rulers, including a succession of female Nawabs or Nawab Begums, unique in Indian history. The last ruling Nawab, Hamidullah Khan, enjoyed a closeness to Muhammad Ali Jinnah, who was campaigning for the independent Islamic nation of Pakistan, as well as Lord Louis Mountbatten, the last Viceroy of India. The Nawab had made up his mind to join Pakistan, but things didn't quite go according to plan. As the date for Independence drew near, the Nawab was a troubled man. His letters to Jinnah seemed to receive a cold shoulder, while the Viceroy was unsupportive of his decision to join Pakistan. There was also the geographical absurdity of it to consider — Bhopal being a landlocked territory that shared no terrestrial borders with the proposed boundaries of Pakistan. Tensions, naturally, ran high with every passing minute. There was much desperate hand-wringing and feverish letter-writing, not to mention a cocked pistol that the Nawab brandished at his daughter. How did Bhopal eventually join the Union of India? To know that, revisit the drama of the times in this gripping episode. On this edition of Parallax Views, Ambassador Akbar S. Ahmed, the Ibn Khaldun Chair of Islamic Studies at American University in Washington, D.C., joined Parallax Views for an enlightening and uplifting conversation about how the golden age of Islamic philosophy can show us a bridge that exists between East and West, Muslim and non-Muslim. Amb. Ahmed's latest book deal with this specific subject and is entitled The Flying Man, Aristotle, and the Philosophies of the Golden Age of Islam: Their Relevance Today. Amb. Ahmed has written a number of books, including The Thistle and the Drone: How America's War on Terror Became a Global War on Tribal Islam and Journey into Islam: The Crisis of Globalization among others, have attempted to deal with questions related to Islamic in modernity, relations between the Western and Islamic worlds, and attempting to foster understand between cultures and interfaith dialogues. His latest book is no exception and discusses a number of philosophers, poets, and intellectuals including the physician Avicenna and his "Flying Man" thought experiment among others. Amb. explains how these figures from Islamic culture cross-pollinated with Western thought and how their ideas were often in line with those of the Enlightenment and the humanist tradition. He also notes how "New Atheists" like Christopher Hitchens and Stephen Fry have a blind-spot in regards to their dismissal of the Islamic world's contributions to culture, from philosophy to art. In addition to disccussing all of this, Amb. Ahmed and I also discuss his attempt to chronicle the life and significance of the Pakistani statesman Muhammad Ali Jinnah, who could be considered the George Washington of modern Pakistan. In this regard, Amb. Ahmed tells us a little about the origins and troubles with the cinematic biopic of the statesmen, simply known as Jinnah, which starred the late world-renowned British actor Christopher Lee (Sarumon the White in the Lords of the Rings and Hobbit trilogies; Count Dooku in Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones; the title character in a number of the Hammer Studios Dracula films) in the lead role. Amb. Akbar talks about the negative portrayal of Jinnah in the Ben Kingsley-starring Gandhi, misconceptions he sees many as having about Jinnah, and his thoughts about Pakistan, India, and Muslim-Hindu unity. Along with all of this, Amb. Ahmed briefly comments on the situation of Afghanistan as someone who extensively studies the Pashtun people there. *CORRECTION: In this episode I neglected to mention that Ambassador Ahmed was co-scriptwriter with Jamil Dehlavi for Jinnah rather than the sole writer. Then in the second segment of our show, Chuck Collins of the Institute for Policy Studies in Washington, D.C. and its Inequality.Org joins us to discuss his decades-spanning work investigating the problem of global wealth inequality and how that inequality has skyrocketed during the pandemic. Chuck describes how he was "born on third base" to a wealthy family (the Oscar-Mayer meatpacking family to be exact) and how it gave him a "front row seat" to the problem of wealth inequality. We discuss what the ultra-wealthy are and aren't, wealth taxes, common arguments against taxing the ultra-wealthy, the World Economic Forum and Davos, wealth inequality as a cause of political polarization and social destabilization, the problem with charity as a fix for global wealth inequality, and much, much more! Is Islam compatible with liberal values, like human rights and gender equality? Mustafa Akyol, my guest today, believes so: but only if Islam itself becomes more liberal. In other words, there is a theological argument to win first. I think Mustafa is one of the most important Islamic intellectuals at work today. In our conversation, we focus on his brand-new book, Reopening Muslim Minds: A Return to Reason, Freedom, and Tolerance.  We talk about the "road not taken" towards Islamic Enlightenment after the “Islamic golden age”, marked by a strong sense of cosmopolitanism and Greek philosophy; meet some   some of the key liberal figures from liberal Islamic history, especially Ibn Rushd, the man who introduced Aristotle to the West; and discuss how to interpret the three key strands of Islamic teachings, namely the Qurʼān, the hadiths (sayings attributed to the Prophet Mohammed) and Sharia Law.  But we start with how Mustafa's work has impacted him personally, including in his home country of Turkey, and how after giving a speech in Malaysia arguing that you can't police religion, he was arrested and jailed: by the Religion Police. This led to what he says was the worst night of his life.  Mustafa Akyol Mustafa Akyol is a Senior Fellow at the Cato Institute's Center for Global Liberty and Prosperity and a contributing writer to the New York Times. Previously, he was a Senior Visiting Fellow at Wellesley College's Freedom Project and has written three books exploring the intersection of Islam and modernity. On this episode of The Wednesday Call podcast, Andy Albright comes to you live from his home in Treasure Island, Fla. to talk about the importance of attitude when it comes to being successful. The Two Attributes of a Positive Attitude: 1). With a positive attitude comes your first biggest asset: Enthusiasm The requirement for being enthusiastic is being an optimist which is a willingness to make an effort and take a chance instead of assuming your efforts won't pay off. The moral we're talking about is having a natural passion for life which doesn't have to rely on a scripted response. The deeper your belief level, the greater your chance of success. Quote: "Keep your face always toward the sunshine and shadows will fall behind you." -- Walt Whitman 2). With a positive attitude comes your second biggest asset: Persuasion The requirement for being persuasive is creating an atmosphere of acceptance which is getting others to acknowledge that things don't always turn out how we want them to, and that they must quickly learn from those mistakes and move on. The moral is realizing your job is not to teach others to change but rather to convince them to adjust their thinking. Try to raise their curiosity with opportunity rather than satisfy with answers. Quote: "I do not believe in taking the right decision, I take a decision and make it right." -- Muhammad Ali Jinnah www.AndyAlbright.com @AndySAlbright www.NAALeads.com @NAALeadsTheWay @NationalAgentsAlliance #TheAlliance #N247RU #DoTheDo

The Parsis will then cease to be called a community and will be labeled a 'tribe'.[37]One-fifth of the decrease in population is attributed to migration.[38] A slower birthrate than death rate accounts for the rest: as of 2001, Parsis over the age of 60 make up for 31% of the community. Only 4.7% of the Parsi community are under 6 years of age, which translates to 7 births per year per 1000 individuals.[39] Concerns have been raised in recent years over the rapidly declining population of the Parsi community in India. The Parsis have made considerable contributions to the history and development of India, all the more remarkable considering their small numbers. As the maxim "Parsi, thy name is charity" alludes to, their most prominent contribution is their philanthropy.Although their people's name Parsi comes from the Persian-language word for a Persian person, in Sanskrit the term means "one who gives alms".[10][11] Mahatma Gandhi would note in a much misquoted statement,[82] "I am proud of my country, India, for having produced the splendid Zoroastrian stock, in numbers beneath contempt, but in charity and philanthropy perhaps unequaled and certainly unsurpassed."[83] Several landmarks in Mumbai are named after Parsis, including Nariman Point. The Malabar Hill in Mumbai, is a home to several prominent Parsis. Parsis prominent in the Indian independence movement include Pherozeshah Mehta, Dadabhai Naoroji, and Bhikaiji Cama.Particularly notable Parsis in the fields of science and industry include physicist Homi J. Bhabha, Homi N. Sethna, J. R. D. Tata and Jamsetji Tata, regarded as the "Father of Indian Industry". Karachi-based businessman Byram Dinshawji Avari is the founder of Avari Group of companies, and is a twice Asian Games gold medalist.[84] The families Godrej, Tata, Petit, Cowasjee and Wadia are important industrial Parsi families.Other Parsi businessmen are Ratanji Dadabhoy Tata, J. R. D. Tata, Dinshaw Maneckji Petit, Ness Wadia, Neville Wadia, Jehangir Wadia and Nusli Wadia—all of them related through marriage to Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the founder of Pakistan. Mohammad Ali Jinnah's wife Rattanbai Petit, was born into two of the Parsi Petit–Tata families, and their daughter Dina Jinnah was married to Parsi industrialist Neville Wadia, the scion of the Wadia family. The husband of Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, son-in-law of Jawaharlal Nehru, Feroze Gandhi, was a Parsi with ancestral roots in Bharuch.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/witcast?fan_landing=true)

In this episode of the Talking Deen podcast we introduce a special guest and Islamic activist from India to provide our listeners with a first hand perspective of the unfolding events concerning Muslims in India. As populism and hindu nationalism increases in India under the leadership of Modi and the BJP, the anti-Islamic sentiment amongst the non-Muslim masses has come to the fore as they become emboldened by the discriminatory anti-Muslim policies of the current Indian government, such as the revocation of the special status of Jammu and Kashmir, the Babri Masjid case and the recent amendment of the Citizenship Act. Make sure you listen to the in-depth discussion with our special guest about the widespread demonstrations and vicious clampdown on Muslim protestors by the authorities and whether this is a prelude to a genocide of Muslims in India.

Do you like owning White supremacists with facts and logic? Do you like nationalism? Do you like a camera locked down at all times? Then you'll love 1982's Gandhi. Here in part one, the past really is prologue. Young Gandhi-an insanely handsome Ben Kingsley-is putting in the work for his Academy Award. Never let it be unsaid: this is a good movie. A good film. Sir (also earned) Knight Commander Richard Attenborough is at the top of his directorial game. Though his brother,David-the Voice of Nature-Attenborough is up there. Professor Sunil Khilnani, from the King's India Institute in London, looks at the life and legacy of Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the founder of Pakistan. Descriptions of his early life do not sound like someone who would go on to lead India's Muslims: he spoke English, dressed impeccably in Western clothes from Savile Row, smoked cigarettes and, according to some accounts, consumed alcohol and ate pork. Yet it was Jinnah who, along with others, publicly assented to the partition of India which, carried out in haste, would give roughly half of India's Muslims political autonomy, cause around a million deaths, displace some 14 million people and transform the geopolitics of the world.
