Geez, how sorry do you feel for Paul Goldsmith at the Music Awards, eh? So, he's invited to the awards and he hasn't got his mate Chris Bishop with him this time. Bishop didn't go after what happened with Don McGlashan last year. Paul Goldsmith's not invited to speak—apparently no one is—which means that when Lynda Topp gets up and starts speaking and tells him off, he's got no right of reply. Here's what she had to say: “Paul, if you listen up for a minute, I'd like you to take a message back to Wellington. I did a speed read on the Budget this afternoon—there doesn't appear to be any money for music. But in big, big letters: $2.1 billion for defence. What the f***?” Now, I think we have to cut Lynda a bit of slack. She's only lost her twin in the past week and she's entitled, of course, to say exactly what she likes. She didn't say anything particularly rude and it's a fair opinion that she holds. But it is becoming a bit of a pattern, isn't it? Ministers turning up to the Music Awards and having to sit through that night's chosen form of protest about whatever the issue of the year is. Last year it was the Treaty Principles Bill; this year it's the Budget. In Paul Goldsmith's defence—given that he wasn't able to mount one—yes, there was no money in the Budget for the arts. There was also no money in the Budget for anything. Most of us looked at it and found nothing for ourselves. That's how it should be in difficult times. The country is not flush. And yes, there is money for defence—a lot of money for defence. That is also how it should be right now. If you were to listen to some, we may be only tens of months away from China potentially taking Taiwan. We have no real conception of what chain of events that could trigger in our region. Even though the drones and the frigate upgrades in this Budget won't protect the entire coastline of New Zealand—that's a fair criticism—we are still expected by our allies and partners to at least try to do our bit. Just try. So, hands up—which minister wants to go to the awards next year? LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this special year-end episode, we break down everything that shaped 2025, from the sounds that dominated playlists to the moments that took over timelines. We kick things off with our 2025 Music Awards, debating the tracks, albums, and artists that defined the year. From Song, Album, and Artist of the Year to standout moments like Best Rap Feature, Best R&B Comeback, and Best Female Rap Moment, we cover the highs—and the runs that couldn't be ignored. We also get honest about the flip side of success, calling out the Most Overrated Song of 2025, shining a light on the Most Underrated Artist, and unpacking how virality shaped music with our pick for Best Viral Song of the TikTok/IG Era. Next, we shift to screens big and small. We crown our Show, Movie, and Documentary of the Year, relive the Best Reality TV Moment, and debate which streaming platform really won 2025. Not everything aged well, though—we talk about the show that fell off and highlight the surprise hit nobody saw coming but everyone ended up watching. To close it out, we rewind the internet itself. From the moment that broke the internet to the most talked-about celebrity, we revisit the scandals, memes, and trends that dominated conversation. We also vent about the most annoying trend, officially decide what we're leaving in 2025, and crown the best meme of the year—because culture wouldn't be culture without humor. This episode is part celebration, part critique, and fully honest—a no-filter recap of what mattered, what missed, and what defined 2025 across music, media, and pop culture.

We're not quite ready to leave the past behind! On this holiday season, Dan and Tay live up to the Radio name and host their very own music wrap-up awards show! They discuss many of the classic soundtracks that came before, and place them in arbitrary categories that mean nothing. That's how these things typically go, right? They also read out an endearing fan letter that had some fun things to say about Sonic R! And don't fret, listener - these two still get up to audio antics as they discuss which president would make a better replacement in Adventure 2. Relax, get your family together, and tell these two that their pics for this year's awards show are wrong!
